The streaking meteor event in Siberia last week has led Jon Stewart to spare a few minutes on The Daily Show to examine footage of the explosion 20 miles high and said to be equal to 300 kilotons of TNT.

But his real interest is asking why so many Russians were able to get the footage in the first place, i.e., why are there so many dashcams? Coincidentally, Wired asked the same question just a few days ago. Using plenty of examples to illustrate his point - akin to this, and this, and this, that we have become oh so used to - Stewart surmises that Russian roads are "A live-action Grand Theft Auto" and that "Russians in their daily lives see so much amazing [expletive] that they have become unfazeable."

Where there's funny to be found, you can count on Jon Stewart to find it. The much-loved host of news parody program The Daily Show has proven a knack for exposing the humorous side of whatever's happening in the news, and lately, well...that's been Toyota and its two recalls. So it was only a matter of time until his Comedy Central crew took a good-natured jab at the world's largest automaker in its most difficult time.

In the video after the jump, you'll find Stewart and his troop noting the overwhelming irony behind Toyota's unstoppable acceleration in the marketplace, the explosive flip-side of its superior gas mileage, company president Akio Toyoda's use of an Audi wagon in Switzerland, and, of course, what this means for Detroit's Big 3 automakers. Set aside five minutes, put a handful of Fritos in your mouth and watch the "Toyotathon of Death." Bonus: David Letterman also took a swing at Toyota on the Late Show. Capitalist-on-steroids Jim Cramer of Mad Money fame (or, if you're a Daily Show fan, infamy) thinks Cash For Clunkers is a great idea. This might surprise some of you (and shock us), but here's his reasons why:
  1. If the total price tag of C4C is $4 to $5 billion dollars, big deal - we spent more than that on Corn Flakes in Iraq.
  2. General Motors and Chrysler are already welfare queens, at least C4C lets them move some metal.
  3. C4C gives Ford, which Cramer calls "the most important auto company with the best lineup of fuel-efficient cars" a chance to stop burning cash, offer refinancing and perhaps equity offers (i.e. offer some common stock).
  4. The environment will be cleaner - "We are doing something good against global warming."
Cramer does go on to say that certain parts of C4C smacks of The New Deal, but Clunkers' (relatively) small price tag is a cheap way to clean up the environment, fight unemployment and move inventory. Says Jim, "[i]t worked for the Chinese with their vouchers to spend, it's working here. What's the issue? Come on Senate, go make it bigger!"

A few of us here at Autoblog are avid watchers of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and during last night's episode he ran a segment begging the question: why is is Congress being so tough on the Big Three when money was so freely given to the financial industry? It's a good question, and Stewart uses his own experience with a "virginity preserving" AMC Gremlin to illustrate that at least the auto industry makes something useful even if it loses money doing so. OK, so you had to be there, which is why we embedded video of the segment for you after the jump as well as a transcript in case you're not allowed to watch funny internet videos in your cubicle at work.

We've seen a lot of stupid car dealer commercials in our time, but this one may well take the cake. The genius comics at The Daily Show found a local Dallas-area ad that features a Barack Obama impersonator hocking Kia Sorrentos for $11,888. So if you have a job and you have $199, you may want to hit the jump to see a lame commercial followed by the comedic stylings of one Jon Stewart. Funny stuff. Thanks for the tip, John!
