Over the course of this Thanksgiving holiday, we'll give plenty of thanks for all good stuff that enriches our lives outside of the automotive world, but being car enthusiasts, we can't help but give special shout-outs to aspects of the auto industry that also make us oh-so-grateful. And since today is Thanksgiving Day here in the United States, we've compiled a list of those automotive things we're most thankful for.

We're taking the day to spend some time with our loved ones (and we hope you're doing the same), but be sure to scroll through our list below and tell us what you're thankful for in the Comments.

From all of us here at Autoblog, have a safe, happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

If you saw a C5 Corvette pulled up next to a C6 Corvette at a stop light, would you assume that a drag race would follow? And which vehicle would win? We'd have our money on the C6 Vette, but then again, the C5 owner may have a bit extra under the hood.

While on his way home from picking up the family's Thanksgiving turkey last week, one astute driver noticed just such a scenario play out in front of his eyes, and he was smart enough to press the record button on his camera phone. Unfortunately, the Vette owners weren't smart enough to know that public drag racing is always a bad idea, even on the day before Thanksgiving.

As it turns out, the C5 did have the juice to keep up with the C6, but it didn't have very good traction. Follow the jump to watch a Bowtie battle for the ages turn into one very expensive insurance claim. With joggers, bikers and kids within a stone's throw of the road, this was a really stupid move, and the drivers are lucky only their cars - and egos - were damaged.

Like the wayward turkey seen here engaging in a bit of self-inspection courtesy of the Ford Motor Company, Thanksgiving is a time of reflection. Autoblog's staff has much to be thankful for this year, including an industry whose health is improving while developing better performing, more environmentally friendly cars each year. Simply put, cars are better than ever.

We're thankful for everything from the spread of direct injection technology to Porsche refusing to give up on the development of manual transmissions.

What automotive things are you thankful for this year? Drop your fellow Autoblog readers a line or two in Comments and let us know.

From all of us at Autoblog, best wishes for a very Happy Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving from Autoblog! originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Nov 2011 12:00:00 EST.
Americans everywhere are feeling the pinch of high unemployment and a stagnant economy. Even the gainfully employed are having a tough go of things, as wages aren't keeping up with inflation.

ABC News took a look at holiday spending, showing how much the price of a turkey dinner has changed in only one year. The big dinner is expected to cost 13 percent more than it did a year ago, and the big bird will cost about $4 more than last year. Those costs are expected to rise in line with the hike in raw materials, but gas prices are to blame as well.

Follow the jump to watch the ABC News video. Gas prices are up on average 53 cents more per gallon than last year, and some experts claim a gallon of petrol could hit $4 per gallon in time for Valentine's Day. We can hardly wait.
Continue reading ABC News says gas prices might affect holiday spending

ABC News says gas prices might affect holiday spending originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 10:02:00 EST.
Click above to find out what the Autoblog team is thankful for

We here at Autoblog are a mighty thankful bunch, and we really shouldn't need just one day to sit down and consider what it is that we are truly just pleased as pumpkin pie for. But, in case you hadn't noticed, today is, in fact, Thanksgiving here in the good ol' United States of America, and so we've put together this list of what team Autoblog is most grateful for this year - check it out by clicking on the big inflatable bird above.

Of course, this isn't an exhaustive list by any means. For instance, we're all rather grateful that there's still an automotive industry - and perhaps more specifically an American automobile industry - for us to be obsessive about. Most of us are also happy that Top Gear USA has finally gotten off the ground, and we're hopeful that it proves entertaining over the long haul.

Sure, there's more. But we're also interested in knowing what you are most thankful for in 2010. Go ahead, leave us all a note in 'Comments.'

We may have one less excuse not to visit the in-laws this holiday season. According to the National Motorists Association and State Farm, driving on the holidays may actually be safer than jumping behind the wheel on a normal day. The insurance agency recently took a look at the number of claims it received on seven separate major U.S. holidays - the Fourth of July, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Easter, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas - and found that on average, those days had 2,350 fewer accidents than non-holidays.

The NMA says that for the majority of the year the average number of claims comes in around 7,435, while the holiday with the most claims - the Fourth of July - netted just 6,031. The figures are without a doubt interesting, but we would be just as interested to see the insurance agency's numbers on the days leading up to and trailing away from major holidays. The majority of people who head away from home typically hit the road just before the actual day of celebration, so we're guessing the number of claims for, say, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving might be higher than the national average.
Guess what? We're not going to talk about it. No, instead of spending time dwelling on the negative, which we can't really do anything about at the moment anyway, we're training our sights on the positives. There's plenty to be happy about in autodom, whether you are a fan of classic Detroit iron, forcefully-aspirated four-bangers and just about anything in between. Besides the mechanical bits that we constantly obsess over, there's also the joy of driving, though that may be the last thing on your mind in your tryptofan-induced coma. To commemorate our love of all things automotive, we've decided that a Top Ten list enumerating all the things for which Autoblog is thankful is in order. So, without further ado...

Top Ten Things Autoblog is Thankful For originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 13:11:00 EST. The fact we get to write about our favorite subject - cars - and there are people like you who are willing to read. For that, we hope today finds you feasting on that wonderful semi-flightless bird that goes so well with stuffing and those cheesy green beans your mom makes every year. We'll be putting our keyboards down long enough to do the same, but don't expect the flow of posts on Autoblog to stop over this Thanksgiving Weekend. Check back here for some post-gorging auto news throughout the holiday weekend and we'll do our best to make it worth your while. And so, we wish you all a happy T-Day from your friendly neighborhood Autoblog.
Happy Turkey Day from Autoblog originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 04:01:00 EST.
