If you're not familiar with the Talbot-Lago brand, well... you're not alone. Born out of the collapsed Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq by an engineer named Antonio Lago, who turned the automaker into a strong competitor in racing. The machine you see above, hailing from 1947, is based on the short-wheelbase chassis used for racing with bodywork designed by Franay.

Suffice it to say, this is a very rare machine, powered by a high-performance 4.5-liter six-cylinder engine with three carburetors mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Apparently the car was found languishing in Tennessee in 1988, and a thorough restoration was completed in 2004. After all was said and done at Barrett-Jackson, the car's new owner found himself $2,035,000 lighter in the wallet.

See it in all its glory in our high-res image gallery above, and read through the auction description below.
Continue reading 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport passes $2 million mark at Barrett-Jackson

1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport passes $2 million mark at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 19 Jan 2013 23:55:00 EST.
RM Auctions only just finished pulling in record numbers at its event in Monaco, but it's already gearing up for the next event set to take place during Pebble Beach weekend in Monterey, California.

Headlining the Canadian specialist auctioneer's catalog for the August event are the rare 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Berlinetta and the timelessly elegant 1938 Talbot-Lago Teardrop Coupe pictured together above.

Considered by some to be one of the world's most desirable Ferrari classic road car, this particular 410 Sport Berlinetta is the second of just four built and the only fixed-roof coupe. Chassis 0594 CM features bodywork by Scaglietti in ivory with blue leather. It will be making its first appearance both in North America and at auction, having only traded hands a few times between private European collectors until now.

The Talbot, meanwhile, is one of only five of its kind built (of four remaining) and the only such coupe built upon a four-seat chassis. The winner of several concours, this particular example of French art deco in motion is expected to fetch $2.5 to $3.2 million. Scroll down for the full press release and peruse the high-resolution images of the two cars together in Monaco for a sneak preview.
Continue reading Elegant classic Ferrari and Talbot-Lago to headline at Pebble Beach

Elegant classic Ferrari and Talbot-Lago to headline at Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2012 08:28:00 EST. The Oxnard, California shrine to French Art Deco automobiles should be on the must-visit list for any enthusiast.

Still, traveling to Oxnard isn't ideal for everyone, so Peter Mullin, chairman of the museum, has teamed up with French automobile experts Richard Adatto, Claude Figoni and Shana Hinds to create a book highlighting some of the most beautiful automobiles on the planet. Titled French Curves: Delahaye - Delage - Talbot-Lago, the book provides an up-close look at some of the all stars of the Mullin Automotive Museum collection.

The book will make its debut at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. A fitting entry for a tome that will certainly class up even the fanciest of coffee tables. You'll be able to purchase a copy for yourself later this year through the Mullin Automotive Museum website. Read all the details in the press release after the break.
Continue reading Bring the Mullin Automotive Museum to your coffee table

Bring the Mullin Automotive Museum to your coffee table originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 07:58:00 EST.
The Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic may be the most iconic of the Art Deco-era French teardrop coupes, but it isn't the only one. Which is a good thing, because there's only two or three of them in existence (and we had a photo session with one of them). The Talbot-Lago may not be as well known today - probably because the company's not around anymore - but it's arguably just as beautiful, and this one's crossing the auction block.

This particular example - a 1938 Talbot-Lago T150C-SS Teardrop Coupe - is one of only 11 examples that featured the second-series "New York" bodywork by coachbuilders Figoni et Falaschi that made the Talbot-Lago the poster child that it is. (This writer had a purple one up on his wall as a child.) Underneath the unspeakably gorgeous sheetmetal (one of only a handful with a factory-installed sunroof) sits a shortened race-bred chassis and a 140-horsepower 4.0-liter inline-six with pre-Mopar hemispherical combustion chambers and triple carbs, along with an independent front suspension. Chassis number 90112 was the subject of a full restoration completed in-house by RM Auctions, and was decorated at both Pebble Beach in 2009 and at Meadowbrook in 2010. And we even like the color...
One of just 40 examples produced, chassis 57551 was named Best of Show at Pebble Beach in 1976. The pair join the Bertone Museum collection and the Ford GT40 Roadster on which we already reported at RM Auctions' inaugural sale on the shores of Lake Como at the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. Read more about the Talbot and the Bugatti in the press releases after the jump, and do be sure to check out the images in the high-res gallery below for a closer look.

As if classic car fans in California weren't spoiled enough with the annual festivities in Monterey, world-class concours in Palm Springs, La Jolla, Dana Point, Palos Verdes, and Pasadena, and first-rate museums like The Petersen and Nethercutt Collection, another incredible collection is being opened to the public this spring. Set to open April 15 in Oxnard, California, the Mullin Automotive Museum is the anchored by the vehicles of Pebble Beach-winner and Monterey Historics racer Peter Mullin, and promises to be another must-see attraction.

According to the press release you'll find after the jump, "the Mullin Automotive Museum will pay homage to the art deco and machine age design eras (1918-1941) that produced exquisite art and magnificent automobiles." The centerpiece will be a huge collection of unrestored Bugattis, but expect to find other iconic brands like Delahaye, Delage, Talbot-Lago, Voisin and Hispano-Suiza, with an emphasis on French cars with coachwork by masters like Chapron, Figoni et Falaschi, Gangloff, Vanvooren, Labourdette, Letourneur et Marchand and Saoutchik among others.

The museum will also feature art and furniture from that era and an entire floor devoted to "Club Bugatti." Besides being home to 100 of the most gorgeous flowing designs of all time, the Mullin will also house some less beautiful but equally significant vehicles including 30 unrestored cars and a whole roster of Grand Prix and Le Mans cars. So if you're in the area, be sure to stop by. Until then, follow the jump for the full press release.
Gooding & Company also set up tent in Arizona and decided to sell a few cars, and it looks like they did pretty well for themselves. Heck, they had sales of eight-and-a-half million on just two cars from two of the greatest car companies of all time, Ferrari and Talbot-Lago.

The Talbot was a mostly original 1937 Talbot-Lago T150 C SS Teardrop Coupe with coachwork by Figoni & Falaschi. These are few and far between, and when they do show up on the block, they generally bring very big numbers. This scarlet streamliner was no different, selling for a whopping $3.52 million. As impressive as that figure is, a certain convertible from Maranello did even better.

The highlight of the show, and the week's top seller, was an extremely rare 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider from the newly-discovered VanKregten Estate. Chassis 1963GT sold for $4.95 million, making it the most expensive car sold at any of the Arizona auctions all week. Gooding's total sales were $31.8 million, with seven of their cars breaking the magic million dollar mark. Photo credit goes to Pawel Litwinski (C) 2009, Courtesy of Gooding & Company.

Gallery: Gooding AZ 2009: Ferrari and Talbot-Lago

[Source: Gooding & Co.]
Gooding Scottsdale 2009: Ferrari and Talbot-Lago combine for $8.47 million originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 18 Jan 2009 19:01:00 EST.
