Many try, but few capture the racing spirit in watch form as well as TAG Heuer. So it's only fitting that the Swiss watchmaker should be the one to celebrate the 100th anniversary of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" - the Indy 500 - as best it knows how: with a special-edition chronograph.

Based on TAG Heuer's Formula 1 model, the Limited Edition Indy 500 Centennial Chronograph is distinguished by such special touches as a grey Brickyard-motif dial, Indy 500 logo in the small counter at 6 o'clock and the words Indy 500 engraved in red on the fixed bezel.

The 44mm steel case also features a full tachymeter scale, chronograph movement and water resistance to 200 meters, affixed to the wrist with either a rubber strap or steel bracelet. Only 1,000 examples will be made - including one to be presented to the race winner on May 29 - retailing for about $1,650. Follow the jump for the official press release.
Continue reading TAG Heuer celebrates 100th anniversary of the Indy 500

TAG Heuer celebrates 100th anniversary of the Indy 500 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 May 2011 07:59:00 EST.
Try to equate TAG Heuer with an automaker and you might come up with Porsche. After all, one of its most famous products is called the Carrera, and the legendary Steve McQueen wore one on film while piloting his Heuer-sponsored Porsche 917 around the Circuit La Sarthe. But in reality, the Swiss watchmaker is much closer to McLaren.

Heuer took on the TAG name when Mansour Ojjeh acquired the watchmaker. His company, Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG), built the Porsche turbo engines that powered McLaren's F1 cars through the mid 80s to back-to-back world championships. Today, TAG Heuer is part of the LVMH luxury products conglomorate, but Ojjeh's independent TAG company still owns part of McLaren. And now, following special watches made to accompany the McLaren F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the two have come back together for a timepiece to compliment the new MP4-12C supercar.

Based on the Carrera model, the MP4 edition features a carbon fiber dial with a large window to see the movement and a big orange zero where the 12 should be (to make it look more like a speedometer), is housed in a sandblasted titanium case and affixed to the wrist with a sweet perforated Alcantara strap. The orange detailing reflects McLaren's traditional color, and the 47-jewel Dubois Depraz Calibre 4900 fly-back chronograph movement features a perpetual calendar display. Only 1,000 examples will be made, and while you don't need to own a McLaren to buy one, it certainly couldn't hurt. Details in the press release after the jump.

Ken Okuyama K.O 7 Roadster - Click above for high-res image gallery

We were awestruck by this car at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show and have been thinking about it ever since. We've wondered aloud what it would be like to drive designer Ken Okuyama's beautiful K.O 7 Roadster, and now, thanks to Motor Trend, we have an idea. The buff book recently got to spend some time with Mr. Okuyama and the 1,740-pound topless sportscar.

The K.0 7 Roadster is powered by a 210-horsepower, 1.8-liter Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine, which has been bored out to a full 2.0 liters. In their testing, M/T recorded a 0-60 time of five seconds flat. More importantly, they also state that the butterfly-doored bantamweight is "heroic in the twisties" and is more fun to drive than a Lotus Elise R, a car with which the K.0 7 shares modified underpinnings.

The former Design Director for Pininfarina, Ken Okuyama is part of the team that brought us the Ferrari Enzo as well as the Maserati Quattroporte and Birdcage Concept. The K.0 7 Roadster is Okuyama's vision of melding the craftsmanship and precision found in fine watches with the heart and soul of a lightweight sportscar. Okuyama is only looking to build a few of these per year, but at a price of around $240,000, the K.0 7 was never going to be a mass-production piece. Low-volume also means flexibility, however, and Okuyama admits he is looking at even more powerful engines from Cosworth, or perhaps the powertrain from the dearly departed Honda S2000.

The connection between high-end sports cars and high-end watchmakers has been solidified for decades, and this newest partnership is a clear indication that the union is alive and well into the 21st century. Here in Geneva, Tesla has teamed up with Tag Heuer to create a limited edition run of Roadsters created in conjunction with the automaker's chief designer Franz on Holzhausen and the Swiss time piece purveyors.

Not only does the slate grey Roadster sport custom graphics and contrasting colors (one side has red mirrors, calipers and matching wheel rings, while the other side has the same kit colored green), but the interior houses a one-fifth second Heuer limited edition stopwatch, a Meridiist mobile phone and will come equipped with a concept watch due to be unveiled at the Baselworld expo later this month. If a custom time piece and a custom EV is your thing, hit the jump for the full details and check out the high-res images below.
If you've ever wondered whether a Tesla Roadster Sport can really rocket from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds, a new custom collectors edition of the electric sports car could allow you to verify that claim with a certain degree of accuracy. As part of its 150th anniversary commemorations, TAG Heuer has teamed up with Tesla Motors and will present the first fruit of their collaboration at the Geneva Motor Show.

The foucault field gray carbon-fiber shell with branding-appropriate mismatched mirrors houses an interior that has received special treatment from Tesla's chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, incorporating design elements from the Swiss watch maker and making room for both a one-fifth second Heuer limited edition stopwatch and a TAG Heuer Meridiist mobile phone. The center console has been specifically constructed to cradle a "cutting edge concept watch" that will itself only be revealed a few weeks from now at the Baselworld watch and jewelry tradeshow. In a timely manner, please make your way past the break to peruse the press release that details their attempt to bring "technologically advanced art to life through motion."

Between the Carrera and the Monaco, TAG Heuer has plenty to offer anyone in the market for a classic driver's watch. But if you're having some trouble deciding between the two, the Swiss watchmaker has announced the re-release of the classic Silverstone Chronograph.

Originally introduced back in 1974, the Silverstone is inspired by the British circuit by the same name, with a rounded-square case inspired by the track's curves. It featured the first automatic chronograph movement, and earned a following all its own.

The re-release will be available with a brown or blue face with coordinating perforated alligator leather strap, and bears the classic Heuer logo before TAG took over. Only 1,500 examples of the re-issue will be released, with a price tag of approximately $6,500 apiece.

At the same time, TAG Heuer has announced a renewal of its partnership with the McLaren team that launched twenty-five years ago, marking it one of the longest-standing sponsorships in the sport's history. Follow the jump for press releases on both developments.

Triumph and TAG Heuer have joined forces to create a one-of-a-kind Bonneville Heuer motorcycle. Inspired by Steve McQueen and the Porsche 917 K that the famous actor, racer and motorcycle rider piloted in the classic film Le Mans, the Bonneville Heuer is painted up in the classic Gulf Oil blue and orange scheme and will be used for promotional purposes.

McQueen famously wore a Heuer Monaco watch in the aforementioned silver screen race drama and was a renowned Triumph enthusiast. Says Neil Morley, Triumph's Head of Brand Communications:

We are delighted to play our part in this exciting project. The Triumph Bonneville and TAG Heuer Monaco are both timeless masterpieces, celebrating their respective 50th and 40th anniversaries this year. We also both have a natural connection with Steve McQueen, who famously wore a Monaco watch in the film Le Mans and was renowned for his love of our bikes, making this a very natural collaboration.

As much as we'd like to tell you this will be an optional color choice for the production Bonneville, that's not currently the case. If you like it as much as we do, perhaps a phone call to your local Triumph dealer is in order.
TAG Heuer Meridiist Automobili Lamborghini - Click above for high-res image gallery

TAG Heuer is no stranger to the car world. They've been crafting driving watches for nearly 150 years and sponsor more racing drivers than you can shake a titanium-alloy rod at. Although the watchmaker has long since been sold to LVMH (which in turn nearly acquired Aston Martin a few years back), TAG partnered with Porsche to develop F1 racing engines in the 1980s for McLaren, in which the company still owns a stake. So it should hardly come as a great surprise that following the watchmaker's foray into the mobile phone market, they've teamed up with an exclusive sportscar manufacturer for a special edition.

The Meridiist Automobili Lamborghini is a quad-band GSM world phone packing 2 gigs of memory, a 2 megapixel camera, an unprecedented 28-day standby/7-hour talk time capacity, stereo Bluetooth and all the bells and whistles you could expect. The case is crafted from 316L stainless steel, coated in black titanium carbide, with a display screen made of 60.5-karat scratch-proof sapphire crystal. And naturally, it's emblazoned with Lambo logos front and back.
Taking aim squarely at Vertu's automotive-inspired luxury cellphones, only 1,963 examples of the Meridiist Lamborghini will be offered, in tribute to the year Ferrucio started selling sportscars. So don't expect to find them for sale down at your local phone shack, particularly since they'll only be available through Lamborghini dealers and select TAG Heuer retailers.

It's the stuff that dreams are made of. Gearhead dreams, anyway: Who would be the fastest between a racing icon of yesteryear and a champion of today? That's the question which Swiss watchmaker and longtime F1 sponsor TAG Heuer posed with its latest contest, The Duel.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the timeless Monaco wristwatch, TAG pitted two of its most famous brand ambassadors - the late great Steve McQueen and reigning Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton - against each other with trick video editing. Online contestants registered their bets on who would win the virtual race, and three winners received a Monaco wristwatch, Hamilton helmet or a test drive in an F1 car. Follow the jump to watch the video and see which of the two TAG Heuer crowned as all-time champion of our imaginations.
Pass by the local schoolyard and you're likely to hear a couple of kids arguing over which superhero would win in a fight, but continue down the street to the corner pub and the debate won't sound much different: Could __XX__ modern athlete beat ___XX___ legend. Of course, for both child and adult, the debate is entirely pointless, but imagination knows no bound... and modern technology can at least heighten the fantasy.

In this case, watchmaker TAG Heuer has taken two of its most famous brand ambassadors, the late, great Steve McQueen and reigning F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, and put them together on screen in a fictitious face-off around Le Mans. The race results haven't yet been determined - there's a contest you can enter at the link below for a chance to win a new Monaco Gulf Chrono Limited Edition, one of Hamiltion's F1 helmets, or a chance to participate in an "F1 driving day." But even if you're not interested in the contest, you can watch the Robbie Williams-esque video after the jump for a good minute-forty's worth of entertainment.

[Source: TAG Heuer]
Continue reading VIDEO: TAG Heuer pits Lewis Hamilton against Steve McQueen

VIDEO: TAG Heuer pits Lewis Hamilton against Steve McQueen originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Mar 2009 14:59:00 EST.
There are lots of watchmakers that cultivate relationships with automakers and Formula One teams, but few have managed to establish themselves quite like TAG Heuer, whose sponsorship of F1, among other motorsport disciplines, has made their products synonymous with racing. Now TAG is hoping to carry its status into the optics industry, and this is their latest effort: the TAG Heuer C-Flex.

If you were wondering why more eyeglass companies haven't made frames out of carbon fiber, this is the answer. The C-Flex is made of the lightweight, high-strength (and high-cost) wonder-material, with fixtures from titanium in a flexible design said to be inspired by the suspension on an F1 car that, along with the patented nose pads, instantly adjusts to your face. The TAG Heuer C-Flex was unveiled at the recent Silmo optical show in Paris, where it won the Golden Award for its innovative design, and will become available (for an assuredly princely sum) in Spring 2009.

Click above for a high-res gallery of the K.07 Spyder

When the K.O7 Spyder broke cover in Geneva we were struck by its bold design (it was penned by the guy who gave us the Enzo and the Quattroporte), but seriously doubted that the track star/supercar would ever see production. Well, a limited run of 99 K.O7s will go on sale on November 1st for the princely sum of 19,500,000 Yen. Yep, that's near-as-makes-no-difference $200,000 -- an awful lot of money for very little car.

And when you consider that it's essentially a modern remake of the fenderless Lotus 340R, which itself seemed expensive back in 2000 at $70,000, you've got to wonder how many more orders Okuyama-san will be taking beyond the 24 cars pre-ordered by Tag-Heuer, who've had a hand in the project since its inception just a year ago. You may remember that the Lotus 340R never reached its performance target of 340 bhp/ton, largely because it was powered by Rover's asthmatic K-series engine. This is why three-hundred and forty 340Rs were built -- the number had to stand for something.

Similar doubts surround the final performance figures for the 750-kg (1,653-pound) K.O7. Okuyama Design say that the good ol' Toyota 2.0-liter found in the Elise and Exige will be good for "200-240bhp", but we don't see a supercharger, nor room for one. However fast it turns out to be, it's a fine looking machine and is bound to remain exclusive.

Check out the gallery of images taken at yesterday's launch deep beneath Tokyo's streets. Note there was an K.O8 electric EV in attendance, sans batteries or electric motor, but since it took Ken just a year to get the 7 from drawing board to production, who knows... we may be back in that garage again in a year's time, reporting for AutoblogGreen.

Of all the watchmakers out there making automotive-inspired timepieces, TAG Heuer is arguably the leader. The Swiss company has sponsored various motorsports for decades, has been endorsed by some of racing's biggest names and continues to produce some of the most lust-worthy yet attainable driver's watches on the market. At the industry's biggest annual exposition, TAG lived up to the reputation with a whole new collection of automotive timepieces.

Among the watches TAG Heuer unveiled at the Baselworld watch expo are three new editions of its Formula 1 Chronograph: two celebrating Kimi Raikkonen's championship last year and the Indianapolis 500, and a new oversized titanium carbide-coated Grande Date Chronograph. Three new luxurious versions of the innovative Grand Carrera were also unveiled, featuring gold and diamond embellishments. But while the Mercedes SLR McLaren may be nearing its long production run, TAG's headline production timepiece was the new SLR Calibre S Laptimer. Featuring a hyper-accurate mechanism capable of timing laps down to 1/100th of a second, the final SLR chronograph will remain in the company's catalog long after the last supercar rolls off the assembly line. Meanwhile, to showcase its latest technological advancements, TAG Heuer displayed the Grand Carrera Calibre 36 RS Caliper Concept Chronograph, featuring a rotating scale mechanism and a second hand that moves in precise increments of 1/10th of a second instead of the usual full-second movements. The concept timepiece was featured on the dash of former Pininfarina, Porsche and GM design chief Ken Okuyama's KO7 Spyder, which we first caught at this year's Geneva show and was displayed alongside the 36 RS concept watch in Basel.

So would "Time is money". The new timepiece featurespush-pieces arranged at 45-degree angle to the dial and embeded next to the case. It's a more flush arrangementthan your average chronograph, and this one's got a strap made out of crock skin. Only 3500 examples of thisauto-inspired Tag Heuer will be produced, just like the SLR McLaren. The price? €3300 Euro or $4000 US. At priceper pound, the SLR McLaren might be the better deal here.

[Source: DaimlerChrysler]
Continue reading Time flies with a Tag Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz watch

Time flies with a Tag Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz watch originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 31 Mar 2006 19:08:00 EST.
