From the files of "wouldn't it be cool if..." comes this case of mistaken vehicular identity. See, the driver of this go-kart must think that he's piloting an actual street-legal motor vehicle. That has to be the explanation as why someone would be crazy enough to take a go-kart on busy city streets. The poster of this video was on his way to Sydney, Australia's Kingsford-Smith Airport, when he spotted this very brave - or very stupid - individual. We're leaning towards the latter.

At one point, the kart driver appears to either nearly lose control of his diminutive vehicle or intentionally try to spin it, in either case, he almost careens into oncoming traffic. This video should serve as a reminder as to why we have sensible traffic laws and regulations for motor vehicles. Apparently the Sydney police agree, and are reportedly keeping an eye out for the driver. We hope this guy made it to work safely, but really, this is a little ridiculous. Fair warning: There is quite a lot of accent-tinged foul language in this one, so it might be Not Safe For Work.
Continue reading Australian go-kart driver plays in traffic

Australian go-kart driver plays in traffic originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 16:59:00 EST.
MC. The letters are sacrosanct to fans of the Trident marque and its venerable racing prowess. They stand for Maserati Corse, and you may recognize them from the MC12, the Enzo-based homologation special that's still kickin' ass and taking names in the FIA GT1 series. More recently the Modenese automaker rolled out a racing version of its GranTurismo coupe bearing those same letters, which has since been followed by a roadgoing version of said racer called the MC Stradale. There've been MC Sport Line accessories for the GranTurismo S as well, but until now the Quattroporte has been left out of the fun.

Kicking things off for its four-door model, Maserati has unveiled the Quattroporte MC Sport in Sydney at the Australian International Auto Show. So what are we looking at, a road-going version of the touring car currently being flogged around Italy's best circuits in the Superstars series? Unfortunately not. What you're looking at here is the existing Quattroporte Sport GT S - already one heck of a car - with some added trim: carbon fiber interior accents and aluminum pedals, and little else. Not much on their own, but then this is how Modena kicked off the MC program for the GranTurismo, so we're hoping this is the harbinger of things to come.

You may not have guessed it on your own - we probably wouldn't have, either - but Australia ranks as the fifth largest market worldwide for Mercedes-Benz. And yet all the exciting show cars are almost invariably unveiled at auto shows in the United States or Europe. You couldn't blame the Aussies for feeling neglected, so Mercedes arrived this year at the Australian International Motor Show with two special AMGs.

The first is called Concept 358, and it's essentially a tweaked C63 AMG sedan featuring the AMG Performance Plus package (which boosts the 6.3-liter V8's output up to 480hp), 19-inch alloys, special leather interior and a unique Pearl Orange paint job.

The unique SLS AMG unveiled Down Under also features a special paint scheme: in this case a unique Night Black matte-finish with red accents. They're not ground-breaking concepts, but interesting takes on some of Affalterbach's best. Details are in the press release after the jump.

Lexus is serious about pitching the CT 200h as a sportier alternative to most hybrids. Thing is, like the Honda CR-Z, the CT doesn't really live up to that hype. That won't stop Lexus from beefing things up a bit, though. To that end, it has unveiled an F Sport package for the hybrid hatch.

Unveiled at Sydney's Australian International Motor Show, the CT 200h F Sport gets a revised body kit, up-sized alloys, tinted glass, specific dashboard and door panel trim, a thicker steering wheel, and new pedals.

Lexus says it has re-tuned the suspension as well, and an optional Flame Blue color joins the catalog. Unfortunately, we think it makes the CT look more budget than premium. You can read all the details in the press release after the jump.

Click above for high-res gallery of the Lexus IS 250 Sports Concept

At the ongoing Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, the same show where Australian sportscar-maker Elfin took the wraps off its new Type 5 Clubman, Lexus unveiled a new version of its IS 250 sports sedan called the Sports Concept.

So what, you ask is the Lexus IS 250 Sports Concept? Think of it as IS F-light, but not quite as light on substance as appearance packages from its German rivals (think Audi S-line or Mercedes AMG sport packages). The show car has been outfitted with 19" wheels hiding cross-drilled two-piece rotors clamped by six-pot calipers up front and four-pots in the rear, painted trademark Lexus F blue. It also sports Billstein shocks and springs; sway bars and chassis braces; an enlarged air intake and cat-back exhaust; a new clutch and short-shift kit; a carbon fiber engine cover and an assortment of spoilers and skirts.

In short, what we're looking at is an IS F, only without the 5-liter V8. The revised breathing systems squeeze out a modest 1.5 percent increase in output from the 2.5-liter V6 for a total of about 213hp. The add-ons are currently being considered for the Australian market, but we're sure there are plenty of fans of the IS F on this side of the globe who don't need to hit 60 in the fours and wouldn't mind a more affordable alternative given the current economic climate.

The shows in Sydney and Melbourne would need to alternate years for this to happen, but the two shows are run by different groups that don't want to give up the income. Cash-strapped automakers have already begun selectively attending the two shows, with big-time brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz joining 12 other automakers that skipped out on this year's Melbourne show. Sydney and Melbourne organizers are getting the hint, and the two sides are discussing how best to move forward. Word is that the show count will be reduced to only one next year.

The move to alternating shows makes sense, and there is precedent to support it. The Paris and Frankfurt motor shows alternate each year, and both are far larger events than what the car-crazed Aussies put together. Tokyo is also a huge show, and it runs on a bi-annual basis, split between passenger vehicles on odd years and commercial rides on even years. Sorry, but we won't be covering Japan's trucks this October.

[Source: Drive]
Australia may switch to bi-annual auto shows originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Aug 2008 08:02:00 EST. It was at the same Sydney Motor Show back in 1987 that HSV debuted its first vehicle, the VL Group A SS Commodore or "Walkinshaw" as it's commonly known. So it's fitting that HSV used the 2007 Sydney Motor Show to debut a special 20th Anniversary edition model of its Clubsport R8. The Clubsport R8 is a hot number on its own, so the anniversary edition adds exclusive cosmetic touches like special Sandstorm paint, 20th Anniversary sill plates, black accents on the body, leather seats with a 20th Anniversary logo and special chrome shadow wheels and brake calipers painted black and gold. That's certainly not a lot but should be enough to make the special edition Clubsport R8 a collectible. For those wishing to add one to their collection, the cost is $65,990 AU. We're sure we speak for most inhabitants of the island continent when we say here's to twenty more.

[Source: HSV]

Gallery: HSV Clubsport R8 20th Anniversary Edition

Continue reading Sydney 2007: HSV turns 20, celebrates with anniversary-edition Clubsport R8

Sydney 2007: HSV turns 20, celebrates with anniversary-edition Clubsport R8 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Oct 2007 15:57:00 EST. Seriously, this rocked the car world. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are returning to the Fast and Furious franchise for F+F IV. w00t! Moving on to more important news (like anything at all), we touch on the then impending and since finished Chrysler strike. See who was right, since the 'cast was recorded Tuesday, and the strike didn't launch until Wednesday. There's been lots of auto show action, and Tokyo caught our attention this week. The Impreza STi debuted, along with a bunch of other weird concepts from Subaru, Toyota, and Honda. One that caught our eye was the Honda CR-Z. Is it an Insight replacement, a new CRX, or both? Sydney's also having an auto show, and the VW Touareg R50 showed up there, packing a house-pulling 600+ foot pounds of torque. There was also a bunch of Ford wares in Sydney, but no Falcon Orion, apparently. Dang. Wrapping up, we touch on On Star's new service for perp-operated cars, which leaves John unsettled (something to hide?). Speaking of unsettled, our final item is the official pic of the 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT. We like it, but we're sure that it will stir debate, and it doesn't get an alphanumeric designator like G3 5/8. Weird. It's a value packed 53 minutes. See you next week!

SUBSCRIBE to the Autoblog Podcast in iTunes
LISTEN to the show now
ADD the Autoblog Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator
Autoblog Podcast #79 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Oct 2007 14:31:00 EST. Based on Ford Australia's Territory SUV, the F6 X is the very first non-Falcon model modified by the brand's high-performance FPV division. Applying their trade to the Territory yields an SUV packing a turbocharged 4.0L inline six-cylinder engine producing 362 HP and 405 ft-lbs. of torque. Power is funneled through a ZF six-speed automatic, the only available transmission, and ends up at each wheel through a full-time all-wheel-drive system. In addition, the FPV F6 X features a host of acronyms like DSC, EBD and tractional control. Brembo six-piston calipers are responsible for scrubbing off speed while the suspension has been retuned by FPV for a firmer ride.

Check out more info and the official press release after the jump, as well as the gallery below with exclusive live shots and official images from Ford.

[Source: Ford]

Gallery: FPV F6 X

Live photos (C)2007 Siddharth Raja / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Sydney 2007: FPV crosses over, unveils F6 X

Sydney 2007: FPV crosses over, unveils F6 X originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 21:16:00 EST. The new wagon from Holden is the latest addition to the VE range of rear-wheel drive sedans. In a nod the cheese, Holden's Chairman and Managing Director Chris Grubbey said, "Holden's new VE Sportwagon turns practi-'cal' into practi-'cool." Corny, yes, but actually he's right on the money. Technically the VE Commodore Sportwagon on display in Sydney is a concept, but Holden says it's basically what Australians will be able to buy in the first half of 2008.

Check out more info and the official press release from Holden after the jump and our gallery of exclusive live shots and official images in the gallery below.

[Source: Holden]

Gallery: Holden VE Commodore Sportwagon

Live photos (C)2007 Siddharth Raja / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Sydney 2007: Holden debuts VE Commodore Sportwagon

Sydney 2007: Holden debuts VE Commodore Sportwagon originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 19:47:00 EST. Take one garden variety VE Ute, add a body kit gets the point across, a motorized rear tonneau cover that can be controlled via the key fob and, oh yeah, a 405 HP LS2 V8 to make things interesting, and you'll begin to understand how Holden goes about making a Maloo. The trucklet, however, is worked by the HSV team, Holden's equivalent of SRT, AMG, SVT, etc. This means the rear-wheel-drive HSV Maloo R8 should be able to carve an Aussie corner as well as it can ripple pavement behind its rear wheels in a straight line.

The Holden HSV Maloo R8 will cost $59,900 AU, or about $53,778 USD. The only options are an automatic transmission for $2,000 AU and a performance pack that includes 20-inch wheels and GTS-inspired sport seats for an additional $3,750 AU.

Check out the official press release from Holden after the jump and our exclusive high-res live shots and official images in the gallery below.

[Source: Holden]

Gallery: HSV Maloo R8

Live photos (C)2007 Siddharth Raja/ Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Sydney 2007: Holden HSV Maloo R8 a "coupe with a damn big boot!"

Sydney 2007: Holden HSV Maloo R8 a "coupe with a damn big boot!" originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 19:43:00 EST. VW tweaked the ECU to huff extra boost into the twin-turbo'd 5.0-liter V10 TDI, which now produces 350 HP at 3,500 RPM and peak torque of 627 lb.-ft. at 2,000 RPM. That allows the bespoke blue behemoth to sprint to 62 in 6.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 146 MPH.

The Touareg's R-treatment isn't limited to the extra grunt, as VW's Individual group equipped the R50 with 21-inch rollers wrapped in 295mm gumballs that frame blue-painted brake calipers. The front clip gets a revised bumper and a grille coated in a matte finish, while flared wheel arches and new side skirts give the R50 a more planted persona. The inside gets swathed in Nappa leather complete with the "R50" logo stitched into the seats and engraved into the doorsills.

When the Touareg R50 goes on sale this November, consumers will have their choice of five color combos: Biscay Blue, Campanella White, Reflex Silver, Black Magic and Atacam Gray.

Volkswagen's press release is posted after the jump.

Gallery: Volkswagen Touareg R50

Continue reading Volkswagen Touareg R50: Stump pulling in style

Volkswagen Touareg R50: Stump pulling in style originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Oct 2007 14:31:00 EST. The new Land Cruiser is completely redesigned with a look that evokes the Tundra's bold front end, but it's also 60mm longer and 30mm wider than the vehicle it replaces. The larger dimensions allow the new Cruiser to seat eight comfortably, though we'll wait until we sit in the third row ourselves to test that claim.

In Australia, Toyota will be offering the Land Cruiser with either a turbodiesel V8 or gas V8 engine. While the Australian press release didn't contain details on either powerplant, we found a European press release that states the diesel will be a 4.5L producing 286 HP and 480 ft-lbs. of torque, and it will be mated to a 6-speed automatic. The gas engine will be a 4.7L VVT-i V8 producing 288 HP and 328 ft-lbs. of torque, though its power will be divided by a 5-speed automatic. Since its sister SUV, the Lexus LX570, will go on sale in the U.S. with the Tundra's 5.7L V8, we expect the Land Cruiser to be offered in the States with that engine, as well.

[Source: Toyota]
Continue reading Officially Official: Toyota debuts 8th generation Land Cruiser

Officially Official: Toyota debuts 8th generation Land Cruiser originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Sep 2007 13:25:00 EST.
We reported a couple weeks ago that Shell was pouring big money into furthering its brand association with Ferrari and F1 racing by filming what was projected to be the most expensive television advertisement ever to be produced. The commercial was set to feature a Ferrari F1 car racing through the streets of downtown Sydney, London and New York.

The crew was reportedly all set to begin filming in Sydney last week when they ran into a slight glitch: at the last second, the government in the state of New South Wales denied the film crew the necessary permits to begin filming. When it was suggested that they could obtain the permit by making a certain - ahem - "charitable contribution", the presumably enraged producer called a halt to production and the entire crew packed up and left.

For our readers in Australia hoping to get a glimpse of the Ferraris racing through their streets, you'll know who to blame for the disappointment. All is not lost, however, as a Ferrari street parade is scheduled to run down Melbourne's Lygon street on March 3. The event, which will serve as a combined promotion for the Australian Grand Prix and for Ferrari's 60th anniversary, will feature 60 Ferraris rolling down the closed-off street section, including a modern Ferrari F1 race car.

Shell Oil, those guys who are getting richer while we all get poorer at the gas pumps, are aiming to break the record for the most expensive advertisement, and the Super Bowl doesn't even factor into it. The fossil-fuels giant is a long-time sponsor of Scuderia Ferrari, and pours millions into the F1 team each year so that enthusiasts and consumers will associate its fuels - Shell V-Power high-performance gasoline, specifically - with Ferrari's racing success. But just to drive the point home even further, Shell is spending close to ?2 million to produce a television commercial.

Wondering how you could possibly spend that kind of cash on a TV ad? No big name endorsements; that's already taken care of. No elaborate sets or costly special effects; you don't need that when you've got a 700-horsepower F1 car at your disposal. The commercial is anticipated to feature an F1 race car speeding around the corners and down the streets of New York, London and Sydney. And we'll bet it's not going to be at five in the morning, either. Closing down big city streets in the middle of the day costs big, and Shell is spending big.

If you don't, you never know what might happen. In Sydney, a woman watching her brother's Maserati coupe while he's on vacation parked it in front of a construction site, blocking off an area workers needed access to. An ambitious member of the group climbed into a forklift and decided to use it to lift and move the car down the street to where it wouldn't be in the way.

Nice idea, but it all kind of fell apart when the Maser got wobbly on the forks and did a Greg Lougainis onto its roof. Not good. In keeping with the little Olympian theme I started here, the forklift operator apparently made like Carl Lewis and booked. Aussie police say he may face charges (may face charges!?!?!) if that's the case. As for the car's owner, we hope he gets a new ride. Once he gets over the initial horror/shock/fury, he'll have a hell of a story to tell his friends and family over drinks....forever.

Click the image above to go to the original news story and see the full extent of the damage.

Thanks to Mark for the tip!

[Source: NineMSN]
Construction worker moves Maserati with forklift.
