Jay Leno's Garage welcomes two of our favorite <a href="http://autoblog.com/lamborghini">Lamborghini</a> models over for compare-and-contrast session, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/lamborghini/gallardo">Gallardo</a> LP570-4 Superleggera and Gallardo LP550-2. Note, however, that these are the 2012 coupes, not <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/09/27/2013-lamborghini-gallardo-paris-2012/">the 2013 models</a> with their revised front and rear fascias.<br />
<br />
Leno likes the size of the Gallardo over the <a href="http://autoblog.com/lamborghini/aventador">Aventador</a>, and between the two siblings, his philosophy leans heavily toward the rear-wheel drive and superior comfort of the LP550-2. With the help of Andrew Romanowski of the Lamborghini Club of America, Leno goes through little-known details like the LEDs in the engine bay and the particulars that distinguish the two vehicles like the Alcantara, polycarbonate windows and lighter tires on the Superleggera.<br />
<br />
Then, doing something that he would never do with human guests on his television show, he takes his favorite out for the driving segment and leaves the all-wheel-drive coupe at the garage to pout. While nominally a show and blog about mobility, most weeks Translogic is discovering all manner of geeky automotive technology, while driving alternative-fuel vehicles powered by <a href="http://translogic.aolautos.com/2012/01/16/translogic-87-electric-delorean-dmc-ev/">electricity</a>, <a href="http://translogic.aolautos.com/2012/04/09/translogic-99-u-m-solar-car-team/">the sun</a>, <a href="http://translogic.aolautos.com/2011/07/25/translogic-64-wood-burning-beaver-xr7/">wood</a>, or <a href="http://translogic.aolautos.com/2012/02/20/translogic-92-bio-bug/">whatever crap</a> they can find. This week, however, for the 100th show, they straight-up went to the track to drive supercars. At Disney World. Speedway.<br />

It's been 60 years since the 1952 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/alfa romeo">Alfa Romeo</a> C52 Disco Volante concepts lounged on the stages of the world's auto shows, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/touring%20superleggera/">Touring Superleggera</a> has taken to marking the occasion with a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/disco%20volante/">Disco Volante</a> of its own, a striking coupe that has just debuted at this year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/geneva motor show">Geneva Motor Show</a>.<br />
<br />
The modern flying saucer pays homage to its ancestors with flat-top fenders and a split grille. Even so, it's hard to miss the vehicle's donor. Not surprisingly, the new Disco Volante is built on the bones of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/alfa+romeo+8c/">Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione</a>, and relies on the same 4.7-liter V8 found in that machine. As such, buyers can look forward to 443 horsepower pumped exclusively to the rear wheels.<br />
<br />
That's right. We said "buyers." This Disco Volante will be available in limited quantities (the company isn't saying how limited), though expect to pay a pretty penny for each one. Jeremy Clarkson has created a new two-disc video titled <em>The Italian Job</em>, where the <em>Top Gear</em> host goes it alone with some of the best supercars money can buy. The video will feature Jezza hooning around Imola and Fiorano in typical shouty, animated fashion - and with good reason. He's got a range of dream cars at his disposal, including a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/458+italia">Ferrari 458 Italia</a>, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ZondaR/">Pagani Zonda R</a>, an off-roading <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lamborghini/gallardo">Lamborghini Gallardo</a> and a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Ariel+Atom/">V-8 Ariel Atom</a> (nevermind that it isn't Italian). Actually, the preview alone contains more vehicles than we care to list. There's even a helicopter to capture the action. <br />

The goal of Clarkson's adventure is to prep the TG host for his first-ever Classic Touring Car Race in England against 20 experienced drivers. And while the two-disc DVD (or Blu-ray) doesn't go on sale until November 15, we've got a 4:36 preview with just about everything we could ask for. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/10/11/video-clarkson-teases-his-own-take-on-the-italian-job/#continued">Hit the jump</a> to see it for yourself, and try not to get too excited. Obvious lengthy name jokes aside, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lamborghini/gallardo">Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera</a> is one heck of a performance machine. It's all about saving weight when it comes to this car ("Superleggera," after all, means "super light"), so it strikes us as something of a surprise to see this prototype of a Spyder version out testing on the N&uuml;rburgring.<br />
<br />
Most noticeably, the hardtop Superleggera's rear wing is gone, but the large front spoiler and rear diffuser make it clear that this Gallardo means business. Besides, Lamborghini has been known to keep weight under control with its Erector Set roof assemblies, so we'd expect the Superleggera Spyder to generate the same sort of super lightweight thrills with a whole lot more wind in your hair.<br />

The explosive burble from the V10's exhaust coming off the back straight seems powerful enough to vaporize insects in mid-air. The Howitzer-like concussions shock through the firewall and slam into our spines an instant before the combustive dissonance has time to reverberate off the outside wall and into our eardrums. The Texas Mile sounds like a totally kick ass event. You get one mile on flat, straight airport runway to go as fast as possible, with a half mile to bring your vehicle to a halt. This year's big winner was Richard Holt; the lucky owner of a fire-breathing, street legal twin turbo <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lamborghini/gallardo">Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera</a>. The 1,000 horsepower super bull turned in an official time of 250.1 miles per hour, or fast enough to make even the most ardent of speed demons a bit leery. To make matters a bit more interesting, Holt drove his twin-turbo Gallardo for the first time ever during his first run on the track.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lamborghini/">Lamborghini</a> has thrown the motoring world a curve ball with a report that Sant'Agata will be leaving manual transmissions to the dinosaurs, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/22/manual-labor-3-pedal-ferrari-california-slower-less-efficient/">just like Ferrari</a>. According to <em>Car and Driver</em>, the decision was part of the company's commitment to increasing the overall fuel economy of its products - something the Raging Bull really hasn't had to bother with in the past. In addition to scrapping the third pedal, the company says it plans to build ever-lighter exotics, which means you can bet your pants there will be even more carbon fiber in Lambo's future line-up.<br />

Don't expect to see any turbocharged <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lamborghini/gallardo">Gallardos</a> in the next few years, though. While automakers around the world may be strapping forced induction to their engines as a way to curb fuel consumption and maintain power, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lamborghini/">Lamborghini</a> says it has no interest in playing with the extra psi. Instead, look for stop/start tech and cylinder deactivation to crop up over the next decade, as well as a mild-hybrid car and an E85-capable V10. The times? They are most definitely changing. <br />

Unlike the great majority of things in life, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/lamborghini/gallardo">Lamborghini Gallardo</a> just keeps getting better and better. And then better. First came the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gallardo+superleggera">2007 Superleggera</a> and it was wonderful. One year later saw the introduction of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/19/first-drive-2009-lamborghini-gallardo-lp560-4/">LP560-4</a> and it's safe to say that quite a few of us on staff here at Autoblog would choose it as our "lottery car." Then, while we were busy losing money on Power Ball, <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/lamborghini">Lamborghini</a> came out with the rear-wheel-drive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/26/first-drive-kinda-2010-lamborghini-gallardo-lp550-2-valentino/">Valentino Balboni</a>. And while we're still busy picking our jaws up off the floor from that stunner, Lambo drops this lime-green bombshell in our lap.<br />

Meet the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/01/quit-pulling-my-leggera-2011-lamborghini-gallardo-570-4-superle/">2011 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera</a>. The numbers are <em>stoo-pid</em> good. Ready? 561 horsepower from the now quite familiar 5.2-liter V10, which is up from 523 hp in the 2007 model). The Superleggera also weighs just 2,954 pounds. The last Superleggera tipped the scales at (a still light) 3,153 lbs, which means the new, much more powerful car is 199 pounds lighter. In fact, it weighs 33 pounds less than a <a href="http://autoblog.com/porsche/boxster">Porsche Boxster</a> - which is <em>nuts</em>. How'd Lambo pull it off? Well, Superleggera means "light weight" in Italian. That being said, the weight savings mostly come from carbon fiber with the rest of the fat being trimmed off the lightweight aluminum wheels. <br />
<br />
In person, the LP570-4 looks fantastic, especially in screaming Lamborghini green. The big visual news is the massive, <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/reventon">Reventon</a>-inspired front air intakes, but we like the giant rear diffuser even more. In fact, we can't think of a single thing we don't like about the latest fighting bull from Sant'Agata, save the not-yet-announced price tag. Which is why we're so big on the lottery.<br />

<p>Some things you figure are universal. Like time, for example. But for a tuning house that regularly takes the fastest cars around and tinkers with them just for kicks, time - say, production dates and acceleration numbers - might not hold the same meaning as it does for the rest of us mere mortals.</p>
<p>Never minding that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/27/lamborghini-ceases-production-of-gallardo-superleggera/">Lamborghini has ceased production of the Gallardo Superleggera</a> to make way for the new LP560-4, German uber-tuners EDO competition has come out with a package for the stripped-out Raging Bull. With a simple twist of the ECU, a new catalytic converter and a carbon fiber air box, power is pumped up to 560 horses and torque to 398 lb-ft, dropping the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time down to 3.7 seconds and the top speed nudging 320 km/h (199 mph). EDO's also installed a variable-noise exhaust and dropped the right height by 15 mm and can outfit any of the 172 Superleggeras produced with custom-painted 19" three-piece modular rims.</p>

<p>Since the news broke that Maserati was planning <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/31/maserati-preparing-911-killer/">a new sportscar to rival the benchmark Porsche 911</a>, Italian styling houses have been lining up to pitch their designs for how they think the new Trident sportscar should look. Following the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/05/geneva-2008-ied-students-design-maserati-chicane-concept/">Chicane concept unveiled in Geneva</a> by the students of the Instituto Europeo di Design, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/17/carrozzeria-touring-coming-back-with-new-superleggera-and-bellag/">resuscitated Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera</a> threw its hat into the ring this weekend with the A8 GCS concept you see above. </p>
<p>Together with Touring's other Maserati concept, the Quattroporte-based <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/22/villa-deste-08-preview-carrozzeria-touring-maserati-quattropor/">Bellagio Fastback</a>, the A8 GCS design study was unveiled at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, the annual Mecca of class and performance on the shores of trendy Lake Como in Italy. Inspired by Pininfarina's iconic Maserati A6 GCS Berlinetta of 1954, the Touring concept presents a compelling mix of modern design and retro touches. While it's hard to make the case that, with even the most well-established outfits struggling to get by, the industry really needs another Italian design house or coachbuilder, if these are the results then we can hardly complain. It was immediately called out as the next evolution of the LP640, a superleggera sibling for the the Gallardo. Then Lamborghini said no, it wasn't -- it was just a mule with unpainted doors. Lamborghini President Stephan Winklemann even dismissed the idea, saying "The LP640 is wild enough." Whether or not he believed what he was saying, the new reality is this: there is no such thing as wild enough. And according to Car magazine, that wilder LP640 will probably be called "Superveloce" -- the sorely missed SV moniker not heard in these parts in far too long.</p>
<p>The SV will lose 100 kg, the same amount shed by the lightweight Gallardo, ending up with 409 bhp per ton. It will also get shorter gearing that keeps it near the 8,000 rpm mark when driven in anger. Even though it will remain an all-wheel-driver, the 0-60 time should drop to 3.0 seconds. Car also says that that walk-the-plank rear wing is supposedly provided by Boeing. </p>
<p>The SV is expected to hit the runway at Frankfurt this September. Oh, and it could be joined by a Gallardo SV, an even harder baby-Lambo meant to take the fight to the F430 Stradale. The good news from Sant' Agata just keeps on coming.</p>

<p>Eyebrows were raised when spy photogs snapped a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/17/spy-shots-lamborghini-murcielago-superleggera/">Murcielago test mule</a> running test laps around the Nurburgring's venerable Nordschleiff in Germany, sporting a big ol' wing on the back and what looks like carbon fiber body panels. If the reports are correct - and we hope they are - the Murcielago Superleggera will get the same treatment as its little brother, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/07/geneva-motor-show-lamborghini-gallardo-superleggera/">Gallardo Superleggera</a>, which was unveiled at the Geneva show. That means carbon fiber and composite components will help bring the weight down, while some tweaks to the engine will bring power up, resulting in a delicious increase to the supercar's power-to-weight ratio. It's too early to tell how much extra juice the stripped-down Lambo will get, but it should be a daunting task considering that the engine's output was already augmented for the LP640. Could we be seeing a 700 horsepower figure? </p>
<p>The report suggests an official unveiling of the Murcielago Superleggera in March 2008, but with Lamborghini's pledge to have a new attraction at every major auto show, we wouldn't be surprised - delighted, mind you, but not surprised - to see it take its first bow earlier than that.</p>

That may be Lamborghini's line of thinking, as this somewhat strange looking Murcielago was caught testing on Germany's famed Nurburgring. <br /><br />The red tester is wearing black panels that are likely made of carbon fiber and/or plastic, just like certain body panels on the Gallardo Superleggera. According to The Car Connection, the doors, engine hood, central tunnel and that large rear wing will likely be comprised of the carbon fiber stuff, and some glass may also be swapped out for lighter clear plastic panels. One would assume that the Murcielago's rapid weight loss would also be accompanied by a corresponding bump in power, as was the case with the Gallardo Superleggera. The current Merc's 640 horsepower is a substantial number already, so who knows how much higher Lamborghini can push it. While the rest of the automotive world was looking to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/07/geneva-motor-show-lamborghini-gallardo-superleggera/">Geneva</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/06/new-york-auto-show-exotics-with-wheels/">New York</a> to see the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/26/lamborghini-gallardo-superleggera-revealed/">Superleggera</a>, LOC had one of its own to display. Well, for one night at least. It was unveiled during a VIP reception so that the dealership's customers could see it for themselves. While it looked pretty hot in its searing Aranco Borealis finish, the new Lambo seemed to be missing something. When one customer asked where the window sticker was, another said, "It doesn't really matter anymore, they're all gone. The lucky bastards." This limited edition, track-friendly Gallardo is limited to 350 units for 2007, all of which are already spoken for.<br /><br />Weighing about 200 pounds less than the regular Gallardo, the carbon fiber diet is readily apparent. Just like Ferrari did with the CS version of their 360, the carbon fiber mirrors are the easiest tipoff that this is the sportiest variant. Lamborghini goes one better with an unpainted carbon fiber rear decklid as well, though, and carries that theme through with an oddly proportioned, but functional, optional rear spoiler. We might pass on that bit if we were doing the buying. The black side strip is a bit odd-looking, too, but we have no complaints about the Alcantara interior with racing seats and harnesses. <br /><br />With a slight bump in power and a modest reduction in weight for a whole lot more cash, some might see this as much ado about nothing. But the devil is in the details, as they say. A not-insignificant 12 pounds has been shaved from each corner resulting in less unsprung weight and sharper reflexes for this somewhat hefty awd machine. That, coupled with a switch to Pirelli P Zero Corsa rubber, means sharper turn-in and overall quicker responses to inputs. The powerband is said to have been remapped for more immediate reaction to stabs at the loud pedal. <p>Less is more when it comes to exotic sportscars. Less weight, that is. Enthusiasts know that taking extra weight out of a sportscar makes it go faster. No wonder, then, that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/07/geneva-motor-show-lamborghini-gallardo-superleggera/">Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera that was unveiled last month at the Geneva show</a> was such a hit.<br /></p>
<p>Although Lamborghinis are decidedly built for the road, the results of the Gallardo's high-perfomance diet can best be seen (and heard) on the race track. This video comes courtesy of the Swedish <em>Auto Motor &amp; Sport</em>, who took the new Superleggera out for a spin at the Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona. Since the development costs of Lambo's lineup make it difficult to produce new models quickly, we'll be seeing other vehicles adopting the Superleggera's ethos. Specifically, lightweight versions of both the Gallardo Spyder and Murcielago are <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/16/lamborghini-something-new-at-every-show/">rumored</a> to bow at this year's Frankfurt and Tokyo auto shows, although the CEO was hesitant to address specifics.<br /><br />As for new models, we won't be seeing hybrids, turbos or diesels finding their way under the hood, but Lamborghini intends to equip all its new models with four-wheel-drive. According to Winkelmann, that particular feature has become part of the brand's cache, and in addition to providing higher levels of performance, it will further solidify Lambo's identity.<br /><br />As for a successor to the LM002: don't expect to see it anytime soon. So it would be a waste of time to tell you that the Superleggera dropped 154 pounds since it was last seen as a Gallardo, got a 10-horsepower bump in output and can now rocket to 60 in just 3.8 seconds. <br /><br />All the carbon fiber bits weren't lost on our lenses, but one particular blonde thought that the composite wing on this very expensive, very rare supercar would make a nice place to lean while we were shooting.
