It's finally over.
Audi has a 60-second spot planned for this year's Super Bowl to promote its S6 sedan, but exactly which spot will air is being put in the hands of Internet users. The ad follows a high schooler as he "embarks on one of the most pivotal moments of his adolescence: prom night." The spot is fixed up to the pivotal moment when he steals a kiss from the prom queen. From that moment, there are three possible endings.

Today, up until 11:59 pm, Audi is running three different versions on its YouTube channel and you can vote on which ending you'd like to see during The Big Game. The winning spot will run on YouTube before the game and then run in the first ad break after kickoff during the Super Bowl. Coca-Cola is running a similar interactive campaign, although its potential endings will involve cowboys, showgirls and a post-Apocalyptic badass, none of which we expect to make it into Audi's prom night spot. Scroll below to view all three alternate ending videos and cast your vote.
Continue reading Choose your own adventure in Audi's next Super Bowl commercial

Choose your own adventure in Audi's next Super Bowl commercial originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 15:00:00 EST.
If the Super Bowl were Las Vegas, Hyundai would be considered one of its whales. The South Korean automaker will be advertising for the sixth straight year during The Big Game, and this time it's rolling up with five spots, four of them new. The new 2013 Santa Fe gets the star treatment, featuring in three of the spots, but the theme throughout is using "a Hyundai vehicle as the ultimate sidekick and partner-in-fun."

The four brand new commercials are:

Epic PlayDate - the headliner, uses the Santa Fe for "an unforgettable and epic play date" and features a brand new song from "a legendary alternative rock band."

Team - a 30-second homage to action movies in which a young boy gathers a team to tackle the neighborhood bullies

Stuck - a 30-second ad that travels with newlyweds on a road trip in a Sonata, getting stuck behind rolling obstacles

Excited - a 30-second spot with NFL commentator Gus Johnson doing a play-by-play on the Genesis R-Spec tacking a track

The fifth spot, which has already aired, is called "Don't Tell" and you'll find it along with a press release below.
Continue reading Hyundai details its five Super Bowl ads, Santa Fe is MVP [w/video]

Hyundai details its five Super Bowl ads, Santa Fe is MVP [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 18:00:00 EST.
Reggae super-duper-star and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jimmy Cliff has been using music to send positive vibes out into the universe for decades now, so its no surprise that his message on behalf of Volkswagen is one of redemption.

Dubbed Sunny Side, this web-spot is VW's warmup of sorts for what promises to be another blockbuster year in the world of Super Bowl commercials. Without giving away the game, the euphonious commercial sees Cliff opening his arms and his heart to some YouTube 'celebrities' that might see courser treatment from the likes of Tosh.0, for instance. We can't help but be reminded of Coca-Cola's legendary 1971 Hilltop spot with the "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" lyric, too.

Enjoy the pre-Super Bowl VW spot below, and don't forget to pay it forward... your karma will thank you. For those of you that just can't get enough of commercial-making magic, we've included a "making-of" video, as well.
Continue reading VW Super Bowl teaser with Jimmy Cliff is like a less-mean Tosh.0 Web Redemption

VW Super Bowl teaser with Jimmy Cliff is like a less-mean Tosh.0 Web Redemption originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 16:31:00 EST. Mercedes-Benz made news in December when we learned that Kate Upton, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition cover model, would be pitching the automaker's all-new 2014 CLA at the Super Bowl next month. With Mercedes determined to target a more youthful buyer for its stylish compact sedan, choosing a beautiful 20-year-old pinup seemed to make good sense.

In order to tease us before the big game, the German automaker has just released a 90-second video with the very seductive Upton interacting with soap suds and her blonde hair. The real Super Bowl ad, partially filmed in New Orleans (where the game will take place) will feature the bombshell along with R&B star Usher.

Scroll down to watch the German automaker's uncharacteristic presentation, and let us know if this risqué Carl's Jr.-like ad direction is a good way to shake up the company's staid image, or if you think it demeans the brand. For the record, we've watched this video more than two dozen times and we still haven't seen a Mercedes-Benz. Maybe one more time will do the trick...

Toyota has turned to actress Kaley Cuoco for a little help during this year's Super Bowl. The Big Bang Theory star will play a role front and center in the automaker's spot for the game, and Toyota fans have a chance to show up in the ad as well. Anyone can take a photo and upload it via Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #wishgranted for a chance to have their image featured in the commercial on February 3. While Toyota isn't saying exactly what the pictures will be used for, we imagine the photos will need to be rated PG. Sorry, guys.

Toyota isn't saying much more about the ad or what its plot line will offer, at least for now. Expect to hear more details surface as we get closer to game day. In the interim, you can check out the brief press release below for more information, or check out Toyota's "Get In The Big Game" web page at the link below.
Continue reading Toyota Super Bowl ad to star Big Bang Theory bombshell Kaley Cuoco

Toyota Super Bowl ad to star Big Bang Theory bombshell Kaley Cuoco originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 14:30:00 EST.
It's been seen by millions of viewers on television and the internet, it's been run through the political wringer on both sides of the aisle and it's been parodied by the comedians at Saturday Night Live. And, according to YouTube, Chrysler's "It's Halftime in America" ad staring Clint Eastwood has been named the top Super Bowl car commercial of 2012.

For those keeping track of such things, Chrysler's commercial has over 10.5 million views on YouTube, though we do feel the need to remind everyone that the video was unavailable for a few hours the morning after the Big Game, which we'd imagine is one of the highest traffic times for such advertisements.

The only other commercial from an automotive company that made YouTube's top five Super Bowl commercials was "2012" from General Motors - itself controversial due to Ford's attempted cease-and-desist request before it aired on the worldwide stage.

The number one ad, you ask? That would be M&M's "Just My Shell" commercial. Guess there really is no accounting for taste... we prefer our M&Ms to be green, just like everyone else. Feel free to watch Chrysler's winning ad one more time after the break.
Continue reading Chrysler's Clint Eastwood ad named top Super Bowl car commercial [w/video]

Chrysler's Clint Eastwood ad named top Super Bowl car commercial [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 19:29:00 EST.
Here's a Super Bowl commercial that most of us probably missed, even those of you who stayed on the couch for all four quarters and didn't even get up during halftime.

It's a fantastic car-chase commercial that features a first-generation Cadillac CTS-V and a pair of iconic Panther-platform Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. The ad is promoting high-speed Exo service for Canadian cable provider Shaw, which explains the couch potatoes and flatscreens riding atop each car.

Check it out after the jump, and get another chuckle now that the newness of the U.S.-market spots has worn off.
Continue reading Canada's Shaw creates a Super Bowl commercial, Canadian-style

Canada's Shaw creates a Super Bowl commercial, Canadian-style originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 18:26:00 EST.
Super Bowl commercials are big business, with multimillion-dollar 30-second spots and productions that seem to get more costly and elaborate every year. General Motors bucked that trend by giving independent film makers the opportunity to make their own 60-second spot, with the winner having their ad played in front of an estimated 110 million viewers during The Big Game.

Long Island, New York resident Zach Borst is that winner, and his first place entry is available after the jump. Borst decided to show what would happen if a new graduate was given a brand-new Camaro convertible as a graduation present - except the grad is really getting a mini fridge. Sounds like a bit of a letdown to us, but Chevrolet marketing boss Joel Ewanick says the ad "clearly shows the passion that Chevrolet elicits."

Hit the jump to read the GM press release and stay to watch the minute-long video.
Continue reading GM chooses "Chevy Happy Grad" for Super Bowl ad

GM chooses "Chevy Happy Grad" for Super Bowl ad originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 10:01:00 EST.
Given a moment's thought, it's a little surprising that Lexus, a luxury brand that changed the game, has never run an ad during the Super Bowl. But the home of L-Finesse not only has nine new or updated cars coming out this year, led by the 2013 GS, it has a new attitude, which will be "uncontained" in a 30-second spot while <strike>the Niners play the Patriots</strike> the NFL champion is decided.
The ad will be supported by a campaign called "TweetDrive Engineered by Lexus," and those with a Twitter account and a bunch of correct answers will have a chance to win a trip to that Bowl of Superness. The spot arrives on February 5.
Volkswagen's Darth Vader Super Bowl ad has all the trimmings of an all-time classic. It involves kids and the most famous Star Wars character of all time. Who doesn't love kids and Star Wars? And, perhaps most importantly, the big game spot was hugely funny. Beyond that, from the moment we first laid eyes on the ad we were certain that this clever spot would spawn a raft of Vader spoofs. We haven't been disappointed.

Beyond the jump is the latest Vader spoof. This time, the mini Jedi trades in his 2011 Passat for a previous-generation Toyota Corolla. But while the original spot was fun and playful, this spoof takes a turn for the Dark Side. Junior Vader chokes his mom, throws his dad and even uses his Jedi mind to lift the toilet seat. But in the end, the edgier Vader meets a force more powerful than the Dark Side. Hit the jump to watch the Violent Broccoli creation - the ending is a bit predictable, but it's still worth checking out. Thanks to all for the tips!

Congratulations, Packers fans, your team just won Super Bowl XLV. And fret not, Steelers fans, your team mounted a thrilling comeback and turned the game from a would-be snooze-fest into a down-to-the-wire fourth-quarter nail-biter. Nicely done all around.

That out of the way, our notoriously short attention spans turn to the commercials. Our own David Kiley shared his well-informed opinions on what his favorites were and weren't, and you can read more about his picks here. As a refresher, here are some of the choices from Chevrolet, Chrysler, BMW, Mini, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, Hyundai, Kia, Suzuki and Bridgestone.

We're curious... Who do you think had the best automotive ad from the Big Game? Was it Volkswagen, for either its impossibly cute 'The Force' ad or its imaginative 'Black Beetle' ad? Or did Chrysler steal the show with its two-minute-long plug introducing the Imported From Detroit tagline? Neither?

2011 Dodge Durango - Click above for high-res image gallery

After years of nearly zero new products, Dodge dealers finally have something to crow about. The 2011 Dodge Journey, Charger, Durango, Avenger and Caravan are all hitting showrooms within a month or two of one another, giving dealers new products just as the auto industry is showing signs of recovery. But how does Dodge get the message across?

Automotive News reports that the marque is prepping a major ad push during the first quarter of 2011, including a return to the Super Bowl. Dodge brand CEO Ralph Gilles reportedly notified dealers that the automaker plans to flood tier one with promotions, with heavy local ads dependent upon sales volume. Gilles is telling dealers about the company's marketing plans in part because he hopes dealers will order more vehicles. The CEO points out that early Durango and Charger orders are very strong, but other new products are lagging behind.

A flood of ads is just part of Dodge's plan to increase showroom traffic. The automaker is also working with Automotive Lease Guide to help maximize residual values. Higher residuals means more affordable lease prices and an improved brand reputation, but Dodge will need to resist the urge to dump its new products into fleets for the plan to work. Dodge is currently leasing only five percent of its vehicles; well below the industry average.

Due to the whole bankruptcy/bailout saga, it's been awhile since we've seen General Motors advertise during the Super Bowl. That may change next year, though. According to Automotive News, the company seeks a return to pre-bankruptcy ad-spending levels by upping this year's budget three to five percent. That includes running a Chevrolet-focused spot during Super Bowl XLV. The news comes courtesy of GM marketing VP Joel Ewanick, who says that we can expect a rash of new advertising projects.

These include a new TV spot highlighting the Chevrolet Camaro and a new tagline for Cadillac, so get ready to hear plenty about "The New Standard of the World" in the near future. Likewise, Chevrolet will try on a new slogan after "Excellence for All" proved to be a dud. Exactly when these new marketing efforts will start popping up on our TV sets is still to be determined.

General Motors is finally starting to get back on the right track, and under the marketing direction of Joel Ewanick, the automaker will reportedly be running an ad slot in the 2011 Super Bowl. As you may recall, GM stopped advertising during the Super Bowl in 2009, not long after the economic crash that eventually sent the company into bankruptcy.

Advertising during the NFL's big game is nothing new to Ewanick. While heading up the marketing department at Hyundai over the last few years, he and the team successfully launched a number of Super Bowl ads, promoting the Genesis line, as well as introducing the world to the automaker's Assurance program in 2009.

GM should be prepared to shell out a pretty penny for next year's ad slot, however. Automotive News reports that 30-second spots are selling for around $3 million. GM will be advertising alongside Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen and Audi in next year's game, and we're sure other automakers will announce their participation over the coming months. In any case, hopefully things go a bit more smoothly for The General than the controversial suicidal robot ad from 2007 (available after the jump).

There probably isn't a day that goes by when an automaker isn't being sued for something. Some suits are extremely serious, while others peg the needle on the frivolity scale. And while Hyundai is flying high on the sales charts right now, the Korean automaker apparently isn't immune to a trip or two the local trademark infringement court.

At question is a Hyundai Sonata commercial that debuted during the Super Bowl that linked the company's new-for-2011 sedan to all things luxurious. About four seconds into the spot, a brown basketball with gold symbols is shown. Forgive us if we didn't immediately notice that the design of the ball is strikingly similar to the colors and symbols of Louis Vuitton, but the world-famous couture company caught on right away. So... are they excited about the free press during the Super Bowl? Not so much.

The Car Connection reports that Louis Vuitton is suing Hyundai because the French purse maker says the Korean automaker tried "to benefit commercially from the fame and renown of the LVM Marks by creating a false association between Louis Vuitton and its automobiles." So, what does LV want for Hyundai's alleged trademark infringement? How about "triple damages, punitive damages, a halt to the alleged infringement, and other remedies." Sounds a lot more expensive than a Louis Vuitton handbag, eh?

We aren't really up to speed on the legal ramifications of trademark infringement, so we aren't about to guess as to whether or not Hyundai will end up paying any fines or settlements. We do think it's a sweet-looking basketball, though, and Louis Vuitton should talk to Hyundai about borrowing that design so they can sell a few <strike>$300</strike> $2,300 b-balls. If you don't remember the commercial in question, hit the jump to see it for yourself.

Super Bowl XLIV has come and gone, with the New Orleans Saints pulling out a convincing albeit surprising victory over the Indianapolis Colts (An onside kick to start the third quarter?!?!?!). You're in the minority if that spoiled a surprise, as the Super Bowl is traditionally the most watched televised event of the year. And because of that, commercials that run during the big game are often the most expensive to produce and fun to watch.

For the most part, this year's crop of commercials lived up to their expensive price tags. The auto industry was in full effect with eight commercials that aired, six of which were by automakers themselves including Audi, Dodge, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Volkswagen. The other were two were from Bridgestone and Cars.com.

Now that we're all back at work nursing hangovers and upset stomachs, it's time to cast judgment and decide which car commercial aired during Super Bowl XLIV was the best. Follow the jump to view them all and cast your vote.

What do blueberries, fishin' rodeos, the moon, and 400-pound linemen that run 4.3-second 40s have in common? They're among the wide range of things Brett Favre discusses in this locker room interview shot for an upcoming Hyundai Super Bowl commercial. Used to hype Hyundai's 10-year warranties, it's a funny look at what the NFL might be like in the future.

The year is 2020 and a gray-haired Favre fields questions from reporters about how things have changed during his 29 seasons in pro ball. While holding the 2020 MVP trophy, Brett echos some of the sentiments he's put out there in the past few seasons while being traded from the Pack to the Jets, retiring, and ending up in Minnesota, where he almost made it back to today's big game. Follow the jump to see a hilarious five minutes from the four-hour shoot, most of which will end up on the cutting room floor by game time.

Kia Big Game commercial - Click above to watch the video after the jump

We're not exactly sure when Super Bowl commercials became as big a story as the game itself, but we can't help but like a little entertainment during the breaks. Other than an advertisement for the aging Dodge Charger, the domestic automakers are staying out of the big game, but Kia had a good 2009 and the Korean automaker wants to get in on the Big Game action with one of its new products for 2010.

Kia picked up a pricey one minute spot during the third quarter of this year's title-deciding game, and it features life-sized toys living the high life in a brand new Sorento. The animated quintet hits the snow, does some water skiing and then goes all Hangover-style in Sin City before reality sets in and mom gets behind the wheel.

Hit the jump to watch the commercial for yourself. The cutsie character routine may be getting a bit tired, but Kia pulls off an entertaining commercial with kickin' tunes, a robot doing the robot and a six-foot tall teddy bear in a hot tub with a total hottie. And plenty more.
