For the first time in ten years, the Mt. Washington Auto Road played host to the Climb to the Clouds. Travis Pastrana had helped drum up interest by recording a time of 6:20.47 towards the end of 2010, which was quicker than the official record run of 6:41.99. That time was laid down by Frank Sprongl back in 1998, and was still the official fastest time despite Pastrana's fast dash up the hill.

David Higgins of the Subaru Rally Team USA arrived in New Hampshire intent on beating both Sprongl's official record and Pastrana's time. He did just that by throwing down a 6:11.54, beating Pastrana's run by nine seconds in the process.

We've been waiting for high-definition video of the run ever since Higgins set the record back on June 26th, 2011. Now we have it... and it's excellent. The clip, posted after the jump, shows just how treacherous the road can be, and how dramatically visibility can change. Higgins, however, believes he can go faster. His new goal? An absolutely bonkers sub-six-minute time.
Continue reading David Higgins' record-breaking run up Mt.
The speculation over exactly who will be taking Travis Pastrana's spot in the driver's seat with Subaru Rally Team USA can officially be put to rest. David Higgins will be the new man in blue and yellow. Higgins has a résumé that's chock full of rally wins, from championship titles in SCCA rally here in the states in 2002 and 2003 to a British National Rally Championship title in 2004. The guy also managed to walk away with a championship wins in group N in the British National Rally in 1997, 1999 and 2002.

Needless to say, the guy's got the chops to keep the pace.

Subaru plans to campaign two cars next season, and while Higgins is the newest member of the team, the leader of the pack will BMX guru and rally beast Dave Mirra. Mirra managed to snag a Rookie of the Year award from Rally America for his efforts last season and took a slot on the podium during the Rally America Olympus event among others. Hit the jump for a look at a video of Higgins doing what he does best as well as the full press blast.

Pastrana posing next to his new NASCAR

It's official. Travis Pastrana has left his partnership with Subaru. The rally fiend joined up with the Pleiades in 2004 in supercross and freestyle motorcross before officially becoming part of Subaru Rally Team USA in 2006. Since then, Pastrana has raked in over 150 stage wins while nabbing a spot on the podium 40 times from behind the wheel of a WRX STI. His resume is also decorated with the fact he managed to walk away with four consecutive Rally America National Championship titles.

As of right now, there's no indication as to exactly what Pastrana has planned for the future, though Subaru was cordial in wishing the company's former hot shoe the best in whatever comes next. Hit the jump for the full press release.
*UPDATE: In a radio interview with Speed Freaks this week, Pastrana let slip that he was in talks with Michael Waltrip Racing to possibly drive for the team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

It's no secret that running a motorsports team is a lot of work, but probably most of us don't know how much time and effort it really takes. Just building the race cars can take hundreds of man hours, as evidenced by this stop-motion video created by the U.S. Subaru rally team. Starting with a stock 2008 WRX STI, the team strips the car down to its frame by removing the engine, drivetrain, interior and even the windshield. The complete transformation takes an amazing 800 hours of labor. Knowing that makes us cringe even more when we see one roll end over end. Follow the jump to watch the video.

Travis was an X-Games star and the youngest ever champion in Rally America last year. They used the LA show to hand out that trophy and announce the contract.

Subaru also had 2005 "Rookie of the Year," Ken Block on hand, confirming he will be back to drive the #43 STI in '07. Pastrana was joined by co-driver Christian Edstrom, who will stick by his slide (hardy har har) in the #199 Subaru.
