As a part of a goal to increase its US sales tally up to 500,000 annual units by the end of the decade, Subaru is investing $400 million in its Lafayette, IN assembly plant in order to start building the Impreza in 2016. According to Automotive News, about half of that investment will be for a new paint plant while another big chunk will be used to extend the assembly line to allow for the increased capacity.

Currently, Subaru's Lafayette plant is responsible for building about 200,000 Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models each year (not including around 100,000 Toyota Camry sedans), but Subaru-specific output will be increased to 300,000 units, requiring an additional 900 new hires as well. Although a previous report suggested the Forester and Impreza would be moving Stateside, this AN article only mentions the hatchback and sedan versions of the Impreza being added to Lafayette - and no mention of the closely related XV Crosstrek.
Subaru investing $400 million for Impreza production in Indiana originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 May 2013 10:15:00 EST.
For a company that does a pretty great job of tying its vehicles to the environment - or, better said, to people who like to actually get out into the environment - Subaru hasn't exactly been a leader in green vehicle production. In fact, it's 2013 and the company is finally releasing its first-ever production hybrid, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid. Tom Doll, Subaru's executive vice president, admitted as much at the unveiling today at the New York Auto Show: "We at Subaru were not the first to market with a hybrid, but we sure made sure we did it right."

That may be, but for now the automaker doesn't want to tell us all the details of how right it is. We do know that the powertrain takes Subaru's 2.0-liter boxer engine and adds in a 13.4-horsepower electric motor and continuously variable transmission. All-wheel drive will be, of course, standard, and Subaru promises the XV Crosstrek Hybrid will offer the "same utility and versatility as the gasoline model," including 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The hybrid does weigh 300 pounds more, though, which required a re-engineered chassis.

The motor can move the lifted Impreza in all-electric mode up to 25 miles an hour (distance not specified). Subaru isn't talking precise fuel economy numbers, either, just that it will be the "most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive crossover in America" and will unsurprisingly have start-stop functionality. We do hear, though, that the hybrid will get around 10-percent better fuel economy than the standard gas-only XV Crosstrek. The most efficient version of that car, the one with the CVT, gets 25 miles per gallon in the city, 33 highway and 28 combined. Whatever this hybrid XV Crosstrek gets, we expect Subaru'll sell a million in Portlandia.
There is no excuse for this Subaru's suspension. There are so many ways to check for bad struts - bounce on the bumper, feel the tires for cupping, or just note the nautical motions as you go down the road.

Whoever owned this Impreza before rally racer Brianne Corn picked it up for $600 completely ignored all the signs of impending suspension doom. Or, like any normal person might do when your Subaru starts doing random donkey kicks, they just put the thing up for sale.

In spite of the danger, or perhaps because of it, this old boxer looks like a hoot in its own right. Keep reading to see the video.
Continue reading How to tell if your $600 Craigslist Subaru has bad struts

How to tell if your $600 Craigslist Subaru has bad struts originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 30 Sep 2012 19:33:00 EST.
Well this should make a Ram fan or two blush. A Ram four-door pulling a trailer was saved from the clutches of a muddy rut by none other than a second-generation Subaru Impreza. That's the power of all-wheel drive for ya!

It's unclear where the video was taken, but amidst many other trucks (all appear to be pulling camper trailers as well), it was the humble Subie that came to the rescue. Using your standard canvas tow strap, the Fuji Heavy hardware barely appears to struggle, though the Ram does its part, too.

We don't get much of a reaction from the driver of the compact hatchback, but we can infer: "AWD, FTW!" One can argue the merits of the Subaru's footing in contrast to that of the mighty full-size pickup, but there's no denying the video evidence below.

As Autoblog scribe Zach Bowman sagely remarked upon watching the footage, "That video is why I hate buying used cars." Touché.
Continue reading Watch this Subaru lug a Ram pickup and a trailer out of the mud

Watch this Subaru lug a Ram pickup and a trailer out of the mud originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Report cards are headed home in automakers' backpacks today, and provided there isn't any grade-changing subterfuge, Subaru has managed to land itself atop the Consumer Reports dean's list. The triumph comes thanks to a class-topping essay entitled "What I Did Over Winter Break: Redesigning the 2012 Impreza," which earned the rugged brand top marks in Small Sedans 101. Combined with high scores in other vehicle classes, Subaru knocked Honda from the valedictorian's position it has held for the past four years.

Also passing Honda were salutatorian Mazda and perennial top-three performer Toyota, who reliably proved that whether it's the smartest kid in the class or not, it's well liked. Mazda climbed in the rankings thanks to a lighter class load, while Honda's drop from the top reflected a year spent drawing giant spaceships and hoping that in Civics class nobody would notice when it turned in a weak rewrite of it's own popular essay from last semester.

Honda wasn't alone in spending the grading period not paying attention. Also spotted wandering the halls was Ford, which dropped out of the top five. While Chrysler found itself with the worst grades in the class - again - the carmaker did see some results from hitting the books lately, earning it the title of second most improved behind Mazda.

The 2012 Subaru Impreza is on its way to a dealership near you, and you can pick one up starting in November. Should you prefer to go with something wearing a WRX or STI badge, you don't have to wait, but you'll just have to be happy with the current version, as Subaru is reportedly holding off on bringing revised examples of the hi-po Impreza sedans and wagons to market.

According to Car and Driver, Subaru plans to continue building the same well-liked Impreza WRX and STI until the new cars are ready, likely in a couple of years. The idea is to allow the revised Impreza to gain some traction before launching the furiously fast versions. Hopefully, the lag time between models will give Subaru boffins time to produce models worthy of wearing those special badges.
Current Subaru WRX and STI to stick around for a couple of years originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 15:30:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just announced a safety recall covering
295,123 vehicles, a pair of Subaru models and a close relative from Saab. The recall concerns front control arms that may fail if corroded, making the vehicle difficult to control. The action covers select 2003-2008 Forester crossovers, 2002-2007 Impreza models and some 2005-2006 Saab 9-2x hatchbacks, the latter heavily based on Subaru mechanicals.

In April, NHTSA launched an investigation after receiving seven complaints from owners of affected vehicles. In two instances, owners reported losing control of their vehicle due to control arm failure. The agency's investigation revealed the front lower control arms may break at the hanger brackets due to corrosion if exposed to salt or humid environments.

This is a geographic recall, meaning that Subaru will inspect the degree of corrosion and either replace or rustproof the control arms on vehicles registered for use in the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

Saab dealers will be responsible to inspect and repair affected 9-2x models as necessary, including the possible rustproofing or replacement of control arms. Owners who think that their vehicle may be covered under the recall are urged to contact their dealer.
Continue reading Subaru Forester, Impreza and Saab 9-2X recalled over control arm corrosion

Subaru Forester, Impreza and Saab 9-2X recalled over control arm corrosion originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 17:32:00 EST.
Taking a break from its endless stream of SportsCenter, followed by SportsCenter, followed by NFL Draft analysis, followed by SportsCenter, ESPN will be running the Global Rally Championship this Spring and Summer.

The Global Rally Championship will be a series of sprint-style races like the ones featured at last year's Summer X-Games, only spread out over an entire season, and utilizing tracks other than the L.A. Coliseum.

The courses will combine dirt, gravel and pavement stages to keep everything as unpredictable as possible. The cars will be the same mix of Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Mitsubishi Lancer and Ford Fiesta compacts that ran at X-Games, along with the new Hyundai Veloster racer with Rhys Millen at the helm, all of which sport ludicrous power figures and should hit 60 in just over two seconds. Having said all that, we can't help but doubt the claims of street legality made by ESPN's announcer in the ad after the jump. Check it out, then head over to the Global Rallycross website for more info.
Travis Pastrana ruins two cars in 24 hours - Click above to watch video after the jump

A day in the life of Travis Pastrana is probably a bit more exciting than our own 24-hour standard stretch of day-in/day-out minutia. We don't race rally cars, do multiple back-flips on a dirt bike or try our hand at NASCAR. Interestingly enough, it's that last one that seems to be giving Pastrana some trouble. He's a man not used to failing, but so far his Pastrana-Waltrip Toyota racecar has an unhealthy attraction to the wall.

Travis was behind the wheel at the K&N Pro Series West NASCAR race when he crashed multiple times. The car went on the trailer and Pastrana headed for a waiting jet, which whisked him off to Salem, Missouri. There, Pastrana hopped into the more familiar territory of his Subaru rally car. Competing in the Rally America National Championship, things were looking good until Pastrana's Subie decided to dance with the tree-lined surroundings. Mother nature won but driver and co-driver, thankfully, walked away.

It certainly makes for an interesting 24 hours. We're glad that it was only cars that were hurt, and we're also glad the cameras were rolling. Click past the jump to spend 24 hours in Pastrana's Alpinestar shoes.
Subaru recently invited us to Budapest to get to know the 2011 European-spec Forester, which was... well, exactly what you'd expect (it was fine), but that's not the point here. What is important is the all-new "FB" engine under the hood - Subaru's third-generation boxer design - the same unit that we'll be seeing in the upcoming Impreza. Essentially, it's a sized-down version of our Forester's 2.5-liter mill, as opposed to the second-gen EJ25 engine in the current Impreza. Got it? Good. Let's get our hands dirty...

Subaru finally appears ready to enter the hybrid segment. Unsurprising considering the numerous rumors and reports that the Japanese automaker, which has strong ties with Toyota, aims to launch it first hybridized vehicle by the end of 2012. However, Subaru's tight-lipped approach prevents us from confirming what vehicle the automaker will use to introduce its hybrid to the world. Initial speculation puts the fuel-sipping technology into either the Legacy or Impreza platform. Regardless, Reuters claims that Subaru's hybrid is U.S.-bound.

On the sidelines of this year's Detroit Auto Show, Reuters prodded Tom Doll, chief operating officer of Subaru of America, seeking insight into the automaker's hybrid plans. Doll stated, "We're going to need something at some point, even (only) to say we have it because that enhances our brand image in the market." Though Subaru has not officially confirmed the launch of a hybrid vehicle, Reuters reports that the fuel-sipping auto will be released in 2012 and maintains that the U.S. will witness the debut of the first Subaru hybrid model in 2013.

Our Japanese may be a bit rusty, but our eyes work just fine. So it was hard to miss this teaser image for an upcoming version of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI tS sporting a carbon fiber roof. When we click to the English-language portion of the site the image and information disappears, so we don't know what else to make of this STI tS and its lighter chapeau.

For the non-Subaru aficionados reading along, tS stands for "Tuned by STI" and we last saw the crew at Subaru Tecnica International apply wrenches to the Legacy. The resulting Legacy B4 2.5GT tS had us drooling and we expect the WRX STI tS to have a similar affect on our salivary glands.

Subaru has given us all a computer-generated look at what the company's new Impreza Design Concept looks like in motion. Frolicking above the waves on some sort of futuristic glass highway, the sedan looks just as well sorted and attractive as it did lounging on stage at the LA Auto Show. The quick clip doesn't just show the four-door prancing through cyberspace, though. We also get a quick glimpse of the vehicle's active braking system and Jetsons interior, too.

The Subaru Impreza Design Concept gets its power from the company's third-generation boxer four-cylinder engine. With 2.0 liters of naturally-aspirated goodness and a CVT, Subaru says that the concept should be easy on the wallet when it comes time to fill up the tank. Naturally, we're far more interested in the next iteration of the WRX and its STI sibling... Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself. Just be sure to brace yourself for the smooth sound of synthesizer action.
Subaru promised a cornucopia of WRXs for SEMA, and it certainly has not disappointed. More than a handful of tuned up Subies are on hand at the automakers booth, and both sedan and hatchback body styles are represented. The two most well known vehicles are the ones you've no doubt seen in the news: Travis Pastrana's New Year's Eve Jump car and Nürburgring-blazing fastest WRX STI driven by Tommi Makinen. Four other custom 'Rexes round out Subaru's SEMA linep.

Kicker has designed an STI with a focus on audio performance, while K&N has brought one that emphasizes street performance. Get More G's teamed up with SPT to provide the go-fast treatment to a five-door WRX, and Subiefest Best of Show winner, Jamarri Whiteside, was able to display his 2006 Subaru WRX STI beneath the bright lights of the 2010 SEMA show. See them all for yourself in our high-res image gallery.

James "Jimmy" Girvan, former Scottish Rally Champion, has died as a result of a crash at the this past weekend's Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally in Scotland. According to the BBC News, Girvan's Subaru Impreza collided with some boulders then was thrown into the surrounding trees. Mike Ramsay, Girvan's co-driver, had to be cut free from the vehicle but he escaped with a minor arm injury. Jimmy Girvan, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene. After the tragic accident, race organizers shut down the event, which itself serves as a memorial to legendary driver Colin McRae who was killed in a helicopter accident in 2007.

We have video footage of the rally cars heading out from the first stage, including Girvan's red Subaru Impreza. It was the last stage he finished at the event before his crash in Stage 2. You can watch the video after the jump, with Girvan and Ramsay pulling up to the starting line around the 1:20 mark. Our deepest sympathies go out to Girvan's family, friends and colleagues. Thanks for the tips, all.

Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept - click above for high-res image gallery

As the old saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And while many of us look at a Subaru and describe the brand's styling as "awkward" or "quirky," owners of the competent, all-wheel drive conveyances tend to show unconditional love. More recent, Subaru designs like the Legacy or Impreza are less "outside the box" than past efforts, but some hardcore Subaru fanatics look at the change in styling as an aesthetic neutering. Still, sales have improved immensely over the past few years, as Subaru has not only survived the Great Recession, but thrived. So what's in store for the future of Subaru styling?

In a recent interview with AutoWeek, Subaru's new design boss Osamu Namba claims that the Japanese automaker is looking to ditch its odd designs once and for all, with cleaner lines that appeal to a wider audience. Namba joined Subaru back in 2008 after spending a decade heading his own design firm, and he's said to be working on the next-generation Impreza; his first production Subaru. But to see where Subaru's design direction could go, look no further than the Hybrid Tourer Concept from the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. The Namba-designed concept is a totally new look for Subaru, with clean, modern lines and an aesthetic that's far less challenging than past models.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for the Subaru design staff is to improve styling without alienating its loyal audience. While some critics may mention that the Hybrid Tourer Concept would rub Subaru owners the wrong way, the Japanese automaker is hoping that those loyal fans will continue to love their products because of their all-wheel drive, boxer engine and entertaining driving characteristics. Head over to AW to read over the interesting article about Namba and the future of Subaru design, and make sure to weigh in on the poll below.

Subaru has released pricing on its non-turbocharged Impreza models (which doesn't include the pictures WRX STI, sorry), and you'll be glad to know that your procrastination has been rewarded. Straight from the house that wears The Pleiades: "Pricing for the 2.5i, 2.5i Premium and Impreza Outback Sport are held to 2010 model year levels." That means the base 170-horsepower Impreza 2.5i sedan holds steady at $17,495, so too the Impreza Outback at $19,995 and everything in between, while the five-door hatch garners a slight premium at $17,995.

On the color front, although Subaru has dropped Newport Blue, and in its stead two hues have been added: Marine Blue Pearl and Sky Blue Metallic. Additionally, there are a couple of monotone paint options for the Impreza Outback Sport, and a couple of trim packages have been reworked and discounted. Follow the jump to read all about it.

2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery

Rumblings about a diesel-powered Subaru WRX STI first surfaced more than two years ago, and now they're back. The realities of meeting CO2 emissions limits in Europe and elsewhere may have increased the likelihood of a high-performance diesel Subaru, and an oil-burning STI would probably generate at least 200 horsepower and well over 300 pound-feet of torque, suggests Autocar. According to the UK rumor-traffickers, gasoline engines will almost certainly remain in the mix, albeit with reduced displacement. A new engine based on the 1.5-liter boxer in the base Impreza could offer suitable power if mixed with other technologies like direct injection. Even if Subaru does indeed develop a diesel STI, there's no guarantee that such a model would ever make it to North America.

Of course, the WRX doesn't live in a vacuum. Its longtime rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo may also ditch the spark plugs and also add a hybrid system. Earlier plans for a gas hybrid were reportedly canceled in favor of the diesel. The plan is to retain the Evo's sophisticated all-wheel-drive for acceleration to 60 mph in under five seconds and CO2 emissions below 200 grams per kilometer. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 - Click above for image gallery

This is the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400, the car Cosworth said would "humble" supercars. With a 0-to-62 sprint happening in just 3.7 seconds it'll be quicker than a whole bunch of exotics, and at £49,995 ($71,368 U.S.), it'll be a whole lot cheaper as well. If that sounds like a boatload of cash for a warmed-over WRX, well, it is. But bear in mind that thanks to factors like the 17.5 percent Value Added Tax, UK pricing is rather different than what pricing in the States would likely look like were Cosworth to sell the CS400 here.

The 395-horsepower, 398-pound-foot Cossie Scooby benefits from a thorough rework of its boxer-engined details, boasting new pistons, con-rods, turbocharger, exhaust and ECU mapping among its many modifications. Aiding the Impreza's all-wheel drive get power to the ground is a lowered suspension with components from Bilstein and Eibach.

Looks-wise, a different front bumper fitted with mesh inserts, a rear spoiler, a track widened by 12 millimeters, and 18-inch alloys over bigger AP brakes will make sure Subaru cognescenti don't confuse you with anything else. Identification will also be made easier by the fact that there will only be 75 made for the UK market only, and available it'll be available in red, silver, and dark gray. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 teaser shots - Click above for high-res image gallery

A couple of years ago, any mention of engine maker Cosworth was often greeted with "Oh, that's right, Cosworth... I remember them." Now the 52-year-old English purveyor of finely engineered goods is back in Formula 1 in a big way, and it's got a Subaru planned that will make everyone take note. The Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 will have 395 horsepower (400 PS) and take 1.5 seconds off the WRX STI's 0-to-60 time: from 5.2 seconds to 3.7.

We've only got teaser shots for the moment, but this thing should sear the eyeballs in more ways than one when we finally see it. Follow the jump for a little more info, and whet your palate for the super Scooby, on sale in June and limited to just 75 units, with the gallery of high-res photos below.
