It seems customers have come to expect a certain sound when a vehicle starts or is put into motion, and electric motors just can't compare to ICEs. GM has decided to add a soundtrack to its upcoming Chevy Volt to remedy that situation. Rather than plugging in the melodic symphony of the ZR1's LS9, however, they think the car deserves something a bit more space-age to go along with its high-tech hardware, and apparently there are some Trekkies at GM HQ. While we doubt they'll actually license the sound effects from the the Kirk and Spock franchise, E-Flex vehicle line executive, Frank Weber thinks the Volt should make sounds similar to when "you hear the doors close, or use the transporter," on the USS Enterprise. So it's official. The Prius' place in the geek hierarchy has been eclipsed by the Volt.

[Source: GM-Volt.com]
Chevrolet Volt to get Sci-Fi soundtrack originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 19:01:00 EST. The Terranaut is a forgettable concept CUV with obvious sci-fi overtones that was developed by Nissan of Europe early in 2006. Had the title not contained "Picard and his crew," this post would have been passed over by most. With the reference to Star Trek: The Next Generation in place, however, the post was submitted to the social news bookmarking site digg.com, where it stands, we believe, as our most dugg post ever with 2,252 diggs. It was even mentioned by Digg founder Kevin Rose and his co-host Alex Albrecht on the Diggnation Podcast. No doubt thousands of trekkies around the globe were introduced to Autoblog because of this post and what they thought might be a new whip for the Away Team, as it has been viewed 345,709 times since it was posted on February 15th. Had it not been for Picard and his crew, however, this Terranaut post would've boldly gone nowhere.

The list so far:
Autoblog's #5 Most-Read Post of the Year
Autoblog's #4 Most-Read Post of the Year
Autoblog's #3 Most-Read Post of the Year
Autoblog's #2 Most-Read Post of the Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 31 Dec 2006 17:45:00 EST.
At its Aircraft Interiors Expo 2006 exhibition in Hamburg next month, Airbus plans torelease a mock-up of an interior designed by BMW for its new A350 twinjet. The decision to employ BMW to"help" design the cockpit takes a swipe at the Airbus twinjet's direct competitor, Boeing's 787 twinjet. We're not sure exactly how much input BMW had, but Airbus isn't giving up all of the credit forsure.

The new design is something out of Star Trek's Ten Forward Lounge -- new lighting schemes; futuristic,ergonomically-designed seating; star-strewn aisles; larger-capacity overhead bins, and even the ability to projectimages like a cloudy sky onto the ceiling, are all part of the package.
