In the beginning of the decade, before SsangYong got into really deep doo-doo, the Korean automaker began work on a hybrid control unit (HCU) with German engineering firm FEV. From 2004 to 2008, as the research continued, the South Korean government provided nearly half of the financial resources for the development of the technology. In 2005, as Ssangyong's stumbles began, Chinese automaker SAIC took a majority stake in the Korean company.

A year later, in 2006, SAIC saw the success SsangYong was having with the HCU and allegedly pressured SsangYong engineers to hand over the technology. And that, according to Korean state prosecutors, violated laws regarding the transfer of "homegrown technologies... without state permission." Since the Korean government paid for almost half of the tech, SAIC's rights to the HCU needed to be approved by the Korean government.

Seven indictments have been brought against SsangYong engineers, none of whom were financially compensated for revealing the HCU plans to SAIC. It appears to be a simple case of bullying. No action is planned against SAIC. Hat tip to Regular Man!
However, not only did South Korea's fifth largest automaker once build Jeeps for the U.S. Army, in the 1970s they changed their name to Dong-A Motor. Obviously, they have since reconsidered. These days, they owe about half a billion dollars to various creditors and suppliers. As such, SsangYong managment has decided to go ahead and liquidate some assets and fire 37% of the company.

Not so fast, says The Wall Street Journal. According to the daily fishwrapper, a group of recently fired workers at an auto plant in Pyeongtaek occupied the shuttered plant several weeks ago and they have been using slingshots and molotov cocktails against approaching riot police in the lead up to Tuesday's raid. Until the raid, police responded by dropping tear gas on the workers from helicopters.

Finally, the police have attacked and about 80 commandos backed by choppers retook a few buildings. However, they have stopped short of capturing the highly flammable paint shop where between 500 and 540 strikers are still holed up. Said a union rep over the possibility of a raid on the paint shop, "We will respond to it, bracing ourselves for death."

[Source: The Wall Street Journal | Image: Jung Yeon-Je/Getty]
REPORT: Police storm occupied SsangYong factory after dropping tear gas from helicopters originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. Those workers (above) then effectively said "all your factory are belong to us," and staged a sit-in at the South Korean production facility that subsequently turned violent. Ssangyong hired its own security to try and clear the plant, but that didn't work. Now, months later, the South Korean police are reportedly set to move in.

Ssangyong production ceased entirely when the factory occupation began two months ago, and the company has no way of getting itself out of dire straits when it can't make any products and engage in commerce. The workers want to negotiate with the government, but the government hasn't announced any intention to do so. It's up to the police now, who said "We'll advance our force into the factory to assist the court's order."

The workers inside the factory appear totally committed to not giving up. Other former workers outside the factory have taken to staging rallies to support those inside, holding aloft banners that read "Layoffs are tantamount to murder." Something will need to give, but before it does, it sounds like more violence is on the way.

[Source: Bloomberg | Image: Jung Yeon-Je/AFP/Getty]
Korean police to storm Ssangyong factory occupied by fired workers? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 10:29:00 EST. A court-ordered restructuring of the Korean automaker earlier this year left 976 employees without work. The displaced workers organized an armed sit-in on the Korean automaker on May 21 that has now turned violent.

According to Ward's Auto, Roughly 4,000 non-union workers and management had been back in the company's Pyongtaek, South Korea, SUV plant attempting to get the assembly line back into operation. After less than 36 hours in the facility, more than 900 pipe and firebomb-wielding strikers surrounded the area and demanded they vacate under increasing threats. As the workers left, they were attacked by striking union workers poised outside (many noted that the national police service had withdrawn their riot squad on Saturday night leaving the 4,000 employees unprotected). All told, more than 70 non-union workers were badly hurt and many of those were hospitalized.

Although the company has offered jobs with affiliated companies, or promised future work to dismissed employees, the union immediately rejected the offer and has demanded to negotiate directly with the Korean government. The future doesn't look good. With no plans for the non-union employees to return and a viable restructuring plan unlikely, the Korean courts are scheduled to make a ruling by Sept. 15 whether to allow Ssangyong Motor Co. to keep operating or to liquidate its assets.

[Source: Ward's Auto]
REPORT: Pipe and firebomb-wielding strikers injure 70 at Ssangyong plant; 4,000 flee originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 08:00:00 EST. In granting its approval the court agreed with a recent report that showed SsangYong is worth more alive than dead. After entering their version of Chapter 11 back in February, the company was faced with liquidation unless they came up with a convincing argument that they could turn things around.

According to the PriceWaterhouse report, the liquidated value wouldn't be nearly as great as a restructured, lean-and-mean automaking SsangYong. The final restructuring report needs to be completed by mid-September, but is already going well apparently. The new plan includes a significant reduction in workforce and a new model range, starting with the diesel-hybrid Eco C200 CUV, that should be out late this year. It restarted its production lines in February, but even the company director, Lee Yu-Il, says volume is still far too slow. To deal with matters, Gasgoo reports that Ssangyong is letting go of 2,700 workers, representing 37% of its workforce.

Yu-Il said the struggling Korean firm will run out of money at the end of June, and will need 100 billion won ($75 million US) if the company is broken up -- which makes us wonder how much the company needs to stay in business and question who would supply such funds in the face of a 50% drop in sales. With majority stakeholder SAIC refusing to get involved, Ssangyong's future is looking decidedly bleak.

[Source: Gasgoo]
Ssangyong preparing to lay off nearly 40% of workforce by end of June? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 13:59:00 EST.
The Seoul Motor Show was the first place new versions of SsangYong's C200 compact urban vehicle (CUV) saw the light of day. The C200 Eco (above) puts up a green flag with a diesel hybrid powertrain that should reduce CO2 emissions by 50%. The Aero version (the black model in the gallery below) can be had with either 2.0 diesel (with 175 hp) or turbocharged 1.8 litre petrol engines. "Can be had" means the C200 will go into production later in 2009.

We first saw the standard versions of the C200, designed by ItalDesign, in Paris last fall. Both the Eco and Aero versions will be available with manual or automatic transmissions. Elsewhere on its stand, SsangYong displayed a diesel hybrid version of the Kyron. Diesel-electric hybrids are not cheap, but the potential for incredible MPG ratings would appear to be unmatched by any vehicle without a plug.

Gallery: SsangYong C200

Continue reading SsangYong brings diesel-hybrid Eco C200 CUV to Seoul

SsangYong brings diesel-hybrid Eco C200 CUV to Seoul originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 09:58:00 EST. The financially battered Korean automaker says its less aggressively-styled C200 is similar in size to the Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4, a class of vehicle that's growing quickly in SsangYong's home market.

The ItalDesign-penned CUV concept is powered by a new 175-horsepower, 2.0-liter diesel engine (torque figures have not yet been released), and four-wheel drive is expected to be available when the C200 reaches showrooms later this year.

SsangYong also expects to show off a new diesel-hybrid version of its oddly styled Kyron, which it says will result in at least 30% better fuel efficiency and at least 50% fewer emissions. Details remain scarce on the powertrain, but SsangYong says the system will involve a direct-injection diesel engine along with a proprietary Torque Split Device that governs use of the electric motor, as well as the usual tricks like regenerative braking and start-stop technology. Earlier this month, Ssangyong was forced to enter receivership as a last ditch effort to stave off bankruptcy after failing to negotiate a deal with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., the Korean automaker's Chinese owners, and Korea Development Bank, its largest creditor.

Prior to those negotiations, Ssangyong was hemorrhaging money due to a 50% drop in sales, which ultimately led to the inability to make payroll and fulfill supplier contracts. At this point, Ssangyong must wait until February 9 to find out if the local court of Seoul will allow the automaker to enter bankruptcy protection proceedings. Sounds like the road will remain bumpy for Korea's fifth-largest automaker for the foreseeable future.

[Source: Gasgoo | Image: AFP/Getty]
REPORT: Ssangyong restarts production originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 17:40:00 EST. The automaker, which is the fifth largest in Korea, was forced to enter into receivership last week after failing to secure adequate funding past what was required to pay its workers for time already put in. SAIC, the company's Chinese owners, have given up management rights to the Korean automaker, leading many to believe that this is could be the end of the road. Perhaps not. Russian automaker Sollers has made the Korean company an offer that could see the firm's <strike>ugly</strike> oddly-styled SUVs live on. Details of the offer have yet to be released, but Sollers already produces a few of the Korean company's 'utes in Russia through a licensing agreement, and the deal would reportedly secure the uninterrupted production of Rexton II and Kyron SUVs in the Far East, completely independent of Ssangyong. As yet, there is no word that anyone is attempting ro rescue the spectacularly proportioned Ssangyong Rodius MPV. Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC) appears to have given up on Ssangyong Motor Co., allowing the company to slip into receivership. SAIC holds a 51% stake in Ssangyong, but gave up management rights in a bid to avoid liquidation and allow Ssangyong some time to get back in the black. The Korean automaker's Chief Executive Zhang Hai Tao and President Choi Hyung-tak both stepped down after the filing.

As recently as a couple of days ago, SAIC said they would help prop up Ssangyong, but that apparently has changed. As vehicle sales have fallen a whopping 50%, money was clearly tight. With the global economic crisis, credit was evidently unavailable to pay workers and new negotiations with the unions weren't going anywhere fast. This receivership agreement protects Ssangyong from creditors and keeps it from entering bankruptcy, allowing it some time to get back on its feet. For its part, SAIC said that it "will work with all parties so that Ssangyong can achieve a plan to normalize its operations." Thanks for the tip, Ken!

[Source: Market Watch]
Ssangyong enters receivership originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 17:29:00 EST. SAIC says the money is to facilitate the development of new products, but we'd guess that paying the Korean automaker's employees for their services will probably take top priority. According to the unionized workers for Ssangyong, which is Korea's fifth-largest automaker, a total of 29 billion won is owed to employees.

The union and SAIC appear to be posturing back and forth on how to proceed from here. Ssangyong's Chinese owners want to cut a total of 2,000 jobs from the Korean automaker before investing any further money and the union is expected to vote on this new plan, which is widely expected to fail. After reporting a staggering sales drop of over 50% last year, though, something's got to give.

[Source: Gasgoo]
Ssangyong gets bailout from SAIC originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 08:57:00 EST. The sordid tale continues this week as Ssangyong's largest creditor, Korea Development Bank (KDB), suggests that it will simply liquidate the automaker if Shanghai Automotive Industries China, otherwise known as SAIC, isn't willing to prop up its ailing subsidiary. As of last week, SAIC had said that it didn't intend on bailing out Ssangyong.

KDB is looking for 120 million won in cash from SAIC, along with another 200 million won in guarantees for loans. Those two bits of financial aid total about $249 million in U.S. funds. If SAIC refuses, KDB says it will not consider making any more loans to Ssangyong. What that means for displaced workers at the Korean automaker we don't know, but it doesn't sound good.

[Source: Gasgoo.com]
Ssangyong faces liquidation if SAIC doesn't prop up ailing automaker originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Dec 2008 16:59:00 EST. The company is more than $77 million (US) in debt, and no longer has the funds to pay its employees' salaries. Ssangyong is owned by Shanghai Automotive Industries China, otherwise known as SAIC. In what could provide a cautionary tale to Volvo workers assuming Ford actually does a deal with SAIC for the Swedish brand, when Ssangyong asked SAIC for the money to pay employees, SAIC refused because Ssangyong's internal employee's union had earlier called for Chinese executives to resign. In the meantime, Ssangyong has merged operations and shut down all of its plants and the employees have planned a protest to make their feelings known.

[Source: Chosun]
Ssangyong says it's out of money, can't pay workers originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 09:58:00 EST. Known outside the U.S. for its 4-wheel drives like the Ssangyong Musso, which means "double dragon rhinoceros", the C200 is a four-wheel-drive, unibody CUV meant to grow Ssangyong's product range. It is packaged with a 2.0-liter engine and a 6-speed transmission, claimed to put out low emissions and be EURO V emissions-approved. Depending on how many horses they can squeeze out, it could be a nice little ride for Ssangyong money. That's all we know about it for the moment, but we'll bring you the full story when it's launched at the Paris Motor Show next month.

[Source: Ssangyong]
Paris Preview: Ssangyong in the house with C200 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Sep 2008 11:29:00 EST. Details are scant, though it's reportedly based on a Ssangyong model. We think the Ssangyong Kyron is hiding under the Roewe's handsome sheetmetal. The Kyron carries its Mercedes-esque styling atop a ladder frame and off-road capable 4WD componentry, so Roewe's new SUV should be able to get dirty without becoming mired. Roewe has added some Lexus to the styling of the Kyron, but the older Mercedes powertrain systems might not remain underhood. Ssangyong uses Mercedes castoffs through a special licensing agreement, though we wouldn't go so far as to call either vehicle a bargain last-gen Mercedes. Looking into reports on the Kyron reveal a vehicle that's well equipped but not a screaming deal; nor is it a stellar performer. Perhaps Roewe has revised the chassis calibration and found a different motor to slide in between the front fenders.

[Source: China Car Times via Straightline]
Rendered Speculation: Roewe SUV originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Dec 2007 16:56:00 EST. "In particular, Wz stands for "World Class, World Standard, World Premium Zenith." And so begins the Chinese-controlled (SAIC has a 51% stake) Korean automaker's journey down a road ultimately leading to a more diverse lineup. By "diverse" we mean one that apparently includes fairly attractive if derivatively-styled cars in addition to a truck roster whose Mercedes-lite styling sometimes spirals into the bizarre. The car that shows us where SsangYong wants to go is the Wz.

Whether or not Wz truly represents the World Premium Zenith is debatable, though if SsangYong were to make t-shirts bearing that slogan, we would gleefully don them. As for the car, like we said, it's not bad-looking, which is a start. Sporting lines that look largely, ahem, borrowed from the likes of Infiniti and BMW, and powered by a 3.6L twin-turbo V6 pumping 365 metric horsepower (PS) to all four wheels. SsangYong's looking to have something in production by 2011. Until then, the old Mercedes-Benz E-Class-based SsangYong Chairman carries the torch as the company's luxury car.

[Source: SsangYong via Autoblog Spanish]

Gallery: SsangYong Wz Concept

Continue reading Frankfurt 2007: WORLD PREMIUM ZENITH! It's like someone cross-bred an M-Class with a Lancia Thesis."

In case you're wondering, that's bad. That dealership, to me, was like some sort of automotive Island of Dr. Moreau.

Anyway, SsangYong UK has announced that it's releasing two new new limited edition Rexton SUVs, and when they say limited, they're really not kidding. The Rexton S Sport is limited to 90 units and comes with navigation, Texas alloy wheels and Chicago side bars with steps. It costs £19,995.

The Rexton SE Sport is limited to just 65 vehicles, and gets a Kenwood nav, Montana 18" alloys, Denver side steps and rear parking assist. It'll set you back £23,995.

What those American cities have to do with the accessories they're named after is a total mystery, but hey, if it wasn't bizarre, it wouldn't be a SsangYong.

(Additional info, photo after the jump)

[Source: SsangYong]
Continue reading SsangYong Rexton gets two new limited editions in the UK

SsangYong Rexton gets two new limited editions in the UK originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Jul 2006 19:58:00 EST. While the front end looks like a reasonable update to the current model, the rear, especially the sloping window line aft of the C-pillar, looks like Honda took a page right out of the Ssangyong book of automotive design.

No info was provided along with the pics, so it very well may be the case that what we're looking it is not the next CR-V. Time will tell as the soft-roader should debut with its new duds soon if it's still to be a 2007 model.

Thanks ebm14 for the tip!

Check out the front shot after the jump...
Continue reading Spy Shots: 2007 Honda CR-V

Spy Shots: 2007 Honda CR-V originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Jun 2006 12:09:00 EST. The SsangYong Actyon Sports, for instance, is a pickup version of the Actyon compact SUV and looks like the love child of a Pontiac Aztec and Subaru Brat. Also unveiled were the SsangYong Rexton II luxury SUV and Kia Carens, the latter of which will be coming to the U.S. as the Rondo.

[Source: Car Design News]
Busan Motor Show 2006 comes to a close originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 May 2006 15:03:00 EST.
