Infotainment systems have come a long way in improving connectivity and entertainment for front-seat passengers, but Cadillac is about to show what they can do for those sitting in the back seat. The 2013 Cadillac SRX is already being upgraded to include the automaker's new CUE system, but now General Motors has confirmed that this popular crossover will also get an optional CUE-based rear-seat entertainment system with a Blu-Ray DVD player.

The new entertainment system uses an eight-inch touchscreen up front and dual independent monitors for rear passengers, and it can connect to up to 10 devices via Bluetooth. Rear controls for the system include two power outlets, an SD card slot, a USB port and auxiliary audio jacks. The rear remote has also been redesigned with kids in mind with a video-game-controller appearance, and even the wireless headphones for the rear passengers have been updated for improved comfort and volume control.

Customers checking the box on this package will have to come up with an extra $1,595, and it is not available on the base SRX trim level. Scroll down to read more on this new entertainment system in GM's press release.
Continue reading GM announces new entertainment package for 2013 Cadillac SRX

GM announces new entertainment package for 2013 Cadillac SRX originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 18:30:00 EST.
Yeesh.

Now, we've seen some pretty bad Chinese copies of American vehicles (blatant Ford F-150 ripoff, anyone?), but this is just... ew. What you're looking at here is a yet-to-be-named crossover from Chinese company Dongfeng, clearly stealing many of its design cues from the decidedly handsome Cadillac SRX.

According to Car News China, this Dongfeng... thing is likely based on the last-generation Kia Sorento, a vehicle that is still manufactured in the People's Republic as part of the Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia joint venture. The crossover will reportedly launch in the first half of 2013, powered by a Nissan-sourced 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Scroll through the gallery above to see a few pictures of the Dongfeng ripoff, and head over to Car News China for more details and photos.
Dongfeng does a terrible job copying Cadillac's SRX originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 May 2012 16:29:00 EST.
Cadillac is trying to make a name for itself on the safety and technology front, recently introducing its new Safety Alert Seat and outfitting new models with a suite of safety equipment that arguably puts it among the leaders in the industry. We got a chance to sample some of this last month, but we were also allowed to "drive" a semi-autonomous SRX test mule equipped with what Cadillac is calling "Super Cruise."

Nominally an improvement on adaptive cruise control, Super Cruise is actually a more sophisticated system that uses a camera communicating with the car's GPS to "see" the road ahead. It goes one step further than currently available systems, however, automatically centering the vehicle in the lane using its electric power steering system. Unlike other active lane-departure systems that use a car's brakes to help prevent it from veering off the road, the system General Motors is developing allows for precisely setting the vehicle's position within the lane. The test mule we sampled had steering-wheel-mounted buttons that would allow you to "nudge" the car from side to side by a foot at a time without upsetting its course. Super Cruise also communicates with the vehicle's other active safety systems to help prevent and mitigate crashes.

Super Cruise is designed only for use on the highway, to "ease the driver's workload."

Super Cruise is designed only for use on the highway, to "ease the driver's workload," with drivers still required to steer in city traffic and for more complicated maneuvers like passing. GM officials acknowledged the difficulty in deploying a system like this, a technology that if used improperly may encourage inattentive driving. Supposedly the system will only be functional under the specific circumstances for which it is designed, much like today's in-car entertainment systems will not play video on the front screen unless a vehicle is in Park. Currently the system is somewhat limited by external factors, like weather and the need for distinct lane markings. If visibility is low or the road doesn't have at least one clear lane demarcation, Super Cruise won't function. However, GM says it will improve the vision abilities of the system as it readies the technology for the marketplace.

GM says that Super Cruise could be introduced into production vehicles in just a few years, "by mid-decade." While on the one hand, its ability to help improve the safety of our roads is laudable, we can't help but express our frustration at the march of technology headed inevitably towards removing the physical act of driving from the motoring equation.

If there's any place a Cadillac SUV can feel at home, surely it's Manhattan. Only fitting, then, that the updated 2013 Cadillac SRX has debuted at the New York Auto Show.

The revised luxury crossover has been treated to a mild facelift, but as with so many things, it's what's inside that counts with the new SRX. The cabin has been updated with a series of cosmetic and functional changes (new steering wheel, new shifter, etc.), but the bigger news is its fresh electronics. Cadillac has imbued the angular high-rider with its new CUE infotainment and connectivity system, complete with an eight-inch capacitive touchscreen. Other additions include the Safety Alert Seat system and active safety features like automatic front- and rear braking, adaptive cruise control, and so on.

In short, it looks to be a better SRX than the one it succeeds, and you can check it out in our gallery of live shots above and the stock shots from the manufacturer below.
Continue reading 2013 Cadillac SRX looks the same, hides its high-tech secrets

2013 Cadillac SRX looks the same, hides its high-tech secrets originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 11:31:00 EST.
Cadillac is updating its best-seller for the 2013 model year, with the SRX crossover getting several technology enhancements, including CUE, the luxury brand's new infotainment system.

The acronym stands for Cadillac User Experience, which uses a capacitive touchscreen for control of numerous functions, including interfacing with a driver's smartphone. While other systems like CUE already exist, none offer proximity sensing and haptic feedback such that the display changes as a driver's hand nears it and gives feedback to his selection. We've already posted a deep dive with CUE here.

The other big upgrade is the availability of new safety technology in conjunction with Cadillac's Safety Alert Seat, which we wrote about here. Two packages will be offered, one called "Driver Awareness" and the other "Driver Assist." The former is focused on crash prevention by way of providing driver alerts, while the latter will also include vehicle intervention.

Cadillac has also added active noise cancellation to the SRX for 2013, along with redesigning the steering wheel and shifter and updating the instrument cluster to accommodate CUE. Some new USB and SD card ports, minor rear-seat entertainment upgrades, standard HD radio, and new interior color combinations round out the changes.

It's going to be a big year for Cadillac, which will soon be reloading its model lineup with the new ATS and XTS sedans. The 2013 ATS compact slots in below the CTS, while the larger 2013 XTS aims to take care of traditional Caddy buyers looking for immensity above all else. While at diametrical ends of the spectrum, the two new models will share a technology package that all revolves around a new seat.

General Motors is throwing around fifty-cent words like "haptic" and phrases like "directional tactile sensation" to describe its new Safety Alert Seat, which vibrates to warn the driver of potential dangers like wandering out of one's lane. The seat employs two electric motors to create its directional feedback, and it's at the center of both safety packages Cadillac will be introducing this year. The first is aimed at merely providing the driver with safety alerts, while a more comprehensive suite will also offer vehicle intervention. Cadillac is using six radar sensors, eight ultrasonic sensors and two vision cameras to drive the new safety systems.

The Driver Awareness Package will debut with the launch of the XTS in the spring and offers the seat, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. In the fall, Cadillac will begin offering the Driver Assist Package, which adds Adaptive Cruise Control, Front and Rear Automatic Braking, and Automatic Collision Preparation. Both packages will also be offered on the SRX crossover, details of which we expect to hear about at the New York Auto Show.
Cadillac is gunning for BMW. The company's recently unveiled ATS is a clear shot across the bow of the German automaker's 3 Series, and Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports the small sedan may be the first of a larger product offensive. Kurt McNeil, vice president of sales with Cadillac, said the luxury brand is currently looking into the possibility of a small CUV designed to lure in BMW X3 buyers. The vehicle would be smaller than the current Cadillac SRX, which saw an 11 percent increase in sales last year.

The report makes it clear that General Motors hasn't given the go-ahead on the smaller crossover, though the fact that Cadillac is growing its presence globally will likely factor heavily in the final decision on whether or not to bring the vehicle to market. American buyers are always happy to welcome another tall-riding five-door into the fold, but CUVs don't enjoy the same level of prestige in European markets.
Cadillac considering smaller-than-SRX crossover? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 16:19:00 EST.
Owners of 2010 and 2011 model year Cadillac SRX utility vehicles, lend me your ears: Your luxury crossover may be facing a recall. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some 8,789 affected units could have an improperly fitted transmission shift cable.

According to the government agency's notice, the faulty installation could result in the cable popping out of the transmission bracket. If that happens, NHTSA says the transmission may not shift at all, rendering the vehicle immobile. The gearbox could also appear to be in Park when it isn't, resulting in a potential rollaway.

Cadillac will begin notifying owners of vehicles covered in the recall next month, and dealers will be tasked with inspecting the cable and making sure it's properly routed and secured. Cadillac has earned itself a gaggle of five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's New Car Assessment Program for the 2012 CTS sedan and wagon and SRX crossover. The CTS earned four stars for the rollover test, but five stars in the frontal and side tests, giving it a score of five stars overall. The SRX returned the same results and the rakish CTS Coupe hasn't yet been rated.

We just wrapped up our first hands-on with Cadillac CUE, the luxury automaker's attempt at a modern, fully-integrated infotainment system for the upcoming XTS, ATS and refreshed SRX.

First impressions are favorable, although in its current form the system is still very beta in both execution and response. However, the core tenants of the system - a capacitive screen with multitouch control and proximity sensors, capacitive center stack buttons and a configurable instrument panel - are all functional and incredibly slick, despite some slow responses and awkward transitions.

Cadillac's electronics and HMI team have been working on CUE for the better part of four years and their efforts show. And with daily builds of the system being developed and deployed, they're well on their way to having the system ready for prime time when the XTS arrives early next year. Get a taste of CUE in action in the video after the jump and look for an animated cameo of the XTS towards the end.
Continue reading Hands on with Cadillac CUE

Hands on with Cadillac CUE originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 14:57:00 EST.
While standing in front of the newly updated 2012 Cadillac SRX, a fellow journalist asked Cadillac Communications Manager David Caldwell why the crossover wasn't based on a rear-wheel-drive chassis. The answer? "We already tried that," said Caldwell.

Those who pray to the gods of rear-wheel drive can go ahead and throw your hands in the air. Smack your forehead, toss down your napkin in disgust and walk away from the dinner table. The truth is simple: The masses like their upscale 'utes to be behave like their midsize luxury sedans. They want comfort and predictability when traipsing from the mall to school, on road trips and everything in between, albeit with a higher seating position, room for cargo out back and an air of stylish sophistication. But is that really a bad thing?
Continue reading 2012 Cadillac SRX [w/video]

2012 Cadillac SRX [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 11:57:00 EST.
The 2012 Cadillac SRX hits dealerships next month, and although the majority of its new model year updates are small, there's big news under the hood. General Motors has decided to ditch both its 3.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 and 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 in favor of the automaker's more powerful 3.6-liter V6, an engine found in a variety of applications throughout GM's portfolio.

GM has officially priced the 2012 SRX from $36,060 (*including $875 for destination).

Other changes for the 2012 model year include standard Bluetooth connectivity on all models, a new Xenon Blue Metallic paint option, new interior color choices and a revised 20-inch wheel pattern, among other things. Follow the jump to read GM's official press release with the full details and check out the 2012 SRX in our gallery above.
Continue reading 2012 Cadillac SRX with 308-hp V6 to start at $36,060*

2012 Cadillac SRX with 308-hp V6 to start at $36,060* originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 17:31:00 EST.
General Motors has announced that it is recalling 47,401 2011 Cadillac SRX models. The vehicles are programmed to deactivate the right-side roof rail airbag if sensors detect that the right side seat is unoccupied. That means that in the event of a rollover, rear seat occupants may not be protected by the supplemental restraint system. As such, the vehicles fail to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standard 208, which deals specifically with occupant protection.

GM says that dealers will reprogram the airbag system free of charge. Cadillac SRX owners can expect to be notified of the recall on or around June 17 and may call Cadillac directly for more information on the program. Click past the jump for the full recall notice.
Continue reading GM recalling 47,000 Cadillac SRX models over faulty airbag software

GM recalling 47,000 Cadillac SRX models over faulty airbag software originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 11:30:00 EST.
Like just about every other automaker on the planet, Cadillac is looking to stake out a larger claim of the Chinese automotive industry. Right now, the brand is viewed as somewhat downmarket from rivals that many in the U.S. see as being on equal ground.

Perhaps, then, Cadillac will look to try something new. In a new short film for the Chinese-market SRX, Cadillac attempts to bridge East with West via Route 66. The ad shows actress and singer-songwriter Karen Mok taking on Will Rogers Highway with a male friend. The Mother Road calls, romance blooms and the Cadillac SRX is the tool that unites the pair. Click past the jump to view the spot.
Continue reading Chinese Cadillac SRX ad with Karen Mok captures romance of Route 66

Chinese Cadillac SRX ad with Karen Mok captures romance of Route 66 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 19:59:00 EST.
In December, 2010 there were reports that a Cadillac SRX plug-in hybrid electric vehicle was in some pipeline somewhere, and that it would eventually plop into some sort of consumer reality. The same outlet that reported that story, Reuters, now cites six GM Deep Throats as saying General Motors has killed the SRX PHEV program.

Overlapping timetables were apparently the problem - by the time the vehicle was ready, the Theta platform that supports it would be at the end of its life. And it didn't help that the SRX PHEV was expected to lose money. That made GM's decision to cancel it, in spite of having spent money to develop the powertrain for three different vehicles so far, a little easier. On top of that, the program was never officially made public, so it's not like GM has anything to apologize for.

The suggestion in the Reuters report, though, is that GM isn't walking away from it altogether. A spokesman said, "I'm not going to comment on specific products or timing for applications, but we still see promise in the technology," and it is known that GM CEO Dan Akerson wants to get Chevrolet Volt range-extending tech into other models, pronto. But after Saturn, Buick and Cadillac haven't made the cut, what's next?
Cadillac SRX PHEV not gonna happen after all originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 May 2011 10:00:00 EST.
Production of the all-new 2011 Saab 9-4X crossover has started on schedule, despite the company's crippling financial woes. While production of the rest of the Saab lineup at its Trollhattan, Sweden plant has ground to a cash-strapped halt, 9-4Xs are rolling off the assembly lines in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.

The plant producing the latest Saab is under contract to the Swedes from GM, and with any luck will help jumpstart a recovery. Under its very Swedish skin, the Saab 9-4X packs the same underpinnings as the 2011 Cadillac SRX.

The base model, which comes with a 265-hp 2.8-liter V6, starts at $33,380, with the top-whack, turbocharged model ringing the register at $48,010. Ominously for Saab, the 300-hp mill is the same engine Cadillac just pulled from the SRX lineup to deal with reliability issues.

Cadillac has officially announced a host of changes for the 2012 SRX crossover, including a new standard engine - General Motors' 3.6-liter direct-injected V6. This powerplant will serve as the only available engine on the SRX here in the United States, replacing both the base 3.0-liter V6 and 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 that was axed earlier this year.

Under the hood of the 2012 SRX, the 3.6-liter mill produces 300 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque - increases of 35 hp and 37 lb-ft over the anemic 3.0-liter engine that served as the base engine when the SRX was refreshed for the 2010 model year. The new V6 offers the same amount of horsepower as the discontinued 2.8-liter turbocharged unit, though it's down on torque by 35 lb-ft.

In addition to its new heart, the 2012 SRX will offer standard Bluetooth connectivity on all models, and a standard heated steering wheel on luxury, performance and premium trims. Additionally, performance and premium trim levels get a new 20-inch wheel option. Pricing will be announced in a few months when the 2012 SRX officially starts production. GM's official press blast is available after the jump.
According to The Detroit News, certain 2011 Cadillac SRX and 2011 Buick Lacrosse models may have been built with a defect that can prevent the vehicle's defroster from effectively clearing the windshield. NHTSA is concerned that the reduced visibility could lead to an accident.

The problem was discovered to during a production trial, in which one in 50 vehicles exhibited the defect.

At the moment, no crashes or incidents have been reported as a result of the programming error, though it's worth noting that only a third of the 10,179 vehicles covered by the recall actually belong to customers. The rest are either unsold or are awaiting delivery.

GM dealers will reprogram the HVAC software to fix the bug free of charge.
General Motors may have pulled the plug on the Cadillac SRX Turbo, but fear not, we will not be stuck with the anemic 3.0-liter V6 as the Caddy's sole powerplant. A report from GM Inside News states that the 2012 SRX will use the automaker's well-received 3.6-liter V6 with direct injection - the unit currently found in the CTS sedan.

Not only is the 3.6-liter V6 more powerful than the outgoing 2.8-liter turbocharged six, it will likely be tweaked to improve overall fuel efficiency when it makes its way under the SRX's hood. Known internally as "LFX," this engine currently produces 304 horsepower in the CTS, though rumors have suggested that power will be increased for use in the larger crossover. GM Inside News also reports that the SRX will get a few other tweaks for the 2012 model year, including a heated steering wheel.
