To the average driver, the term "horsepower" has, for all intents and purposes, no meaning whatsoever. Not surprising, really, as there isn't any single established explanation, at least not a good one, as to how today's piston-powered engines became so intertwined with the output of a horse. Think, for a moment: Can you really quantify how much power 200 horses produce? Regardless, and though not all engines have been measured with the same methods of certification, enthusiasts of the four-wheeled kind have well over a century of automobiles and their attendant horsepower ratings with which to occupy themselves.

The Ford Model T, way back in 1908, offered up 20 horsepower. The original air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle was rated at 50 horses or less, depending on the year and displacement. Fast-forward to 1955, when Chevrolet's newly introduced small-block V8 made an impressive 162 hp, and then to the release in 1964 of the Pontiac GTO and its 348-horsepower Tri-Power engine. We'll shimmy right past the lamentable 1970s and '80s (in 1975, it was possible to buy a Chevrolet Corvette with as few as 165 horses) because, more recently, there's been a very welcome power resurgence.

Our Editor-in-Chief's beloved 1991 Ford Taurus SHO is fitted with a Yamaha 3.0-liter V6 that was factory rated at 220 horsepower, and a few short years later, the 1994 Chevrolet Impala SS offered up a 260-horsepower V8. We bring up the SHO and Impala because they are four-door sedans, meaning horsepower need not be dismissed by the average man who must pile in his spouse and 2.5 children.

And now we have the 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8. Lurking behind its blacked-out grille is a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine that ripples the pavement with 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. To put that figure into perspective, its more ponies than such high-horse heavy hitters as the latest Chevrolet Camaro SS and Ford Mustang GT. In fact, it's 40 horsepower more than the 2012 Corvette. Giddyup.

Certainly, there's more to the 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 than its honker of a V8. But let's not kid ourselves - if the SRT8 is on your shopping list, it's 6.4-liter V8 is what put it there.

2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 11:57:00 EST.
The Mopar team showed up to SEMA 2011 in full force with a bevy of factory-tuned machines, including a Dodge Challenger ACR. The company says that the vehicle is an homage to the option-delete muscle-bruisers of old, and as such, this Challenger has scrapped any component that could possibly slow it down.

In addition to a gutted interior and plenty of carbon fiber, the Challenger ACR features a laundry list of Mopar components. Those include a complete coilover suspension, massive front and rear strut tower braces as well as a short-throw shifter and full cat-back exhaust. The easy-breathing pipes likely help the 6.4-liter V8 produce a bit more power than the base SRT8's 470 horses.

Inside, the SRT engineers fitted a Drag Pack center stack and a carbon weave shift bezel kit. While we typically shy away from massive wheels, we have to admit that the 20-inch rolling stock on the Challenger ACR is plenty fetching.
Continue reading Dodge Challenger ACR sheds pounds, adds speed

Dodge Challenger ACR sheds pounds, adds speed originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 20:30:00 EST.
We're completely smitten with Chrysler's latest hi-po Hemi, which displaces 6.4 liters and offers up to 470 horsepower and a matching 470 pound-feet of torque in the engine bay of such vehicles as the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392. Of course, not everyone can manage a two-door with limited space inside for passengers and cargo, which is why Chrysler has placed the massive lump under the hood of the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 as well.

Inside Line cites "a source close to the project" as saying the Grand Cherokee's platform sibling, the Dodge Durango, may also be in line for a 470-hp power infusion for 2013. It only makes sense, since the Jeep and the Dodge share major assemblies between them and both offer the same V6 and V8 engines (besides the range-topping SRT8, for now...) and since Dodge has historically been Chrysler's performance division.

Possibly tipping the scales in the opposite direction, though, is the fact that the Durango R/T, which features a 370-horse version of the Hemi mill, has reportedly not been selling up to expectations. IL also cites pricing as a possible roadblock, since the Jeep SRT8 already tops $50,000 and the Durango SRT8 would likely hit that figure as well, since it would use the same engine, all-wheel-drive system, adjustable suspension and massive Brembo brakes.

As for us, we can think of few better ways to shuffle yourself plus six passengers and their luggage than in a 470-horsepower Durango. And so we ask you: Should Chrysler offer a Dodge Durango SRT8?

All it takes is a moment or two pondering Chrysler's high performance SRT lineup to put a smile on our faces. After all, the entire lineup was given a makeover in the past few months, complete with a new 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine that pumps out 470 pavement-punishing horsepower.

Newly named SRT brand CEO Ralph Gilles is lucky enough to have the best seat in the house to oversee the development of the brand. Gilles sat down in front of the cameras to talk SRT, and the good folks at Chrysler popped the results into YouTube for your enjoyment.

Hit the jump to check out the moving pictures. If you're not inclined to tune in for Gilles and his unbridled passion for all things SRT, then do it for the beautiful b-roll of Chrysler's performance lineup in action.
Continue reading Ralph Gilles talks about SRT's mission

Ralph Gilles talks about SRT's mission originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 16:55:00 EST. The people behind Dragtimes.info love sharing videos where powerful machines are paired in head-to-head straight-line automotive combat. Recently, a unique face-off occurred when a Nissan GT-R lined up at the tree with a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 in the other lane. Both vehicles are far from stock, put down their power via all four wheels and snap off the line as if they were whips cracked by Henry Walton Jones, Jr himself.

Both drivers have a mile to go before they reach the finish line.
If 470 horsepower is fun, 570 raging stallions can be positively evil. Rumor has it that Chrysler thinks so too, and the automaker plans to unveil an optional tier of SRT vehicles with upgraded powerplants. Later in the year, the Dodge Charger SRT8 and Chrysler 300 SRT8 will reportedly be available with an Eaton-sourced supercharger that will up output to somewhere in the 540-570-horsepower range.

The option (which could possibly come in kit form to be installed at the dealer) will be offered on 2013 model year cars, and, if the rumor holds true, it comes with another upgraded feature to help meter out the extra go-fast energy. Chrysler will fit the four door sports cars with an eight-speed automatic transmission. We sure hope this all pans out.

Currently, this super extra only applies to the SRT vehicles riding on the LX platform. That means the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 isn't slated to get the upgrade. The Dodge Challenger rides on a modified LX platform known as the LC, but rumor has it the power boost will be available for that model as well.
Chrysler SRT8 models to boast 570-hp supercharged option for 2012? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 18:59:00 EST.

We've just returned from flogging the all-new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 on the main 2.5-mile road circuit at Willow Springs Motorsports Park in Southern California. This particular Jeep is nothing like your great-grandfather's Willys, your cousin's lifted CJ or even your little sister's Liberty.

Lacking anything close to resembling a Trail Rated badge, this lowered, two-and-a-half ton monster packs a massive 6.4-liter Hemi under its hood, 20-inch forged alloys at each corner and an adaptive damping system to keep body movement in check. Even from a distance, it's hard to miss this four-door's oversized brakes, cannon exhaust pipes and intimidating body cladding. This Jeep looks mean, sounds aggressive and picks fights with sports cars instead of mountains.

But what is the point of the Grand Cherokee SRT8? Do its owners race it, or is this simply an exercise to antagonize cavalier Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 drivers? What are the benefits - and drawbacks - to packing 470 horsepower in an SUV? Can this thing even tow?

We found answers to all of those questions and more, during our day on the track and long drive back to Los Angeles.
Continue reading 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 11:57:00 EST.

"Did you know that it was never supposed to be called a Charger?"

The man posing the question is Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of Chrysler's SRT group. According to Gilles, the modern Charger was styled to have been branded differently, but the suits wanted a sporty full-size four-door. The design team delivered what was asked and the marketers went ahead and applied the name. Much to the chagrin of many a Mopar fanboy on the planet.

Thankfully, our time with the the affable Mr. Gilles wasn't spent pondering the last generation LX's branding issues. Or refinement issues. Or interior gaffes. Instead, Chrysler rounded up its newest factory-fettled performance superstars in Southern California so we could get some quality time with the latest generation of SRT machines, including the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8.

This updated model provides a welcome change compared to its predecessor. Some may still feel that the last-gen Charger may not have deserved to wear the badge, but Chrysler's latest is clearly closer to its B-Body brethren. To find out just how close, we strapped in and ran down some of California's finest roads on our way out to Willow Springs for some track time.
Continue reading 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Jul 2011 11:57:00 EST.
Could Dodge be ready to run with a new wagon in the future? Automotive News chatted with SRT president Ralph Gilles, an unapologetic fan of the now-defunct Magnum. Gilles revealed that one unnamed Chrysler exec, now retired, was responsible for killing off the car, and that other Magnum aficionados are now coming out of the woodwork within the company.

Gilles didn't go so far as to announce that a future Magnum has been given the green light inside the company, but told Automotive News to "stay tuned" and that "great things are coming."

Hopefully, this means another muscle wagon is in the works. Early rumors that the Magnum nameplate would be used on Dodge's big new crossover never panned out; it hit showrooms as the Durango.

Our take? Revive the Dodge Magnum! If the new Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger are any indication, it'd be excellent ride, especially when Ralph Gilles and his SRT speed freaks get around to stuffing that 392 Hemi underhood. After all, the practical hoons among us deserve some love, too.
Is Dodge mulling a Magnum successor? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 20:02:00 EST. SRT cars love doing burnouts. This is not news. So, how do you get an all-wheel-drive 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to produce as much smoke as any Challenger, Charger or 300C we've ever seen? By messing with the ECU, of course.

You see, in Track mode, the Jeep sends 65 percent of its power to the rear wheels, and, according to SRT engineers, there are certain instances where 100 percent of the engine's power can be sent to just one rear wheel. Loading some special software into the engine's control system can easily allow for sending all the power to both rear wheels, and thus, burnouts ensue.

We've just returned from driving the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 for ourselves, so stay tuned for our full impressions next week. For now, hit the jump to watch the big SRT monster making huge plumes of smoke.
Continue reading 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 already reflashed for crazy burnout action

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 already reflashed for crazy burnout action originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 19:57:00 EST. Chrysler has announced pricing on four of the company's new SRT models, including The 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8, 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8, 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 and the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

According to Automotive News, buyers looking to jump into the 470-horsepower Charger with its scowling bodywork and 12-second quarter mile time can expect to be met with a $46,660 MSRP, including an $825 shipping and destination fee. The Charger's two-door cousin, the 2012 Challenger SRT8, comes saddled with a moderately cheaper $44,077 price tag, though the gap narrows somewhat when you realize that the car gets hit with a $1,500 gas guzzler tax in automatic guise and a $1,000 tax when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox. Sounds like all the more reason to row your own cogs to us.

Step off of the Dodge lot and into the Chrysler showroom, and the 2012 300 SRT8 will set you back $47,995 thanks to some additional luxury bits.

Which vehicle is the most expensive of the SRT flock? That title goes to the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 with its $55,295 entry price.

Everyone who purchases an SRT vehicle gets a one-day track experience to help them understand how to better control their vehicle, a move that sounds like a good investment to us. Hit the jump for the gaggle of press releases on these vehicles.
Continue reading Chrysler prices 2012 SRT fleet

Chrysler prices 2012 SRT fleet originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 09:27:00 EST.
As if you needed any reminder, in the 1971 film Vanishing Point, a character by the name of Kowalski is tasked with making it from Colorado to San Francisco in a 1970 Dodge Challenger. Kowalski bets a friend that he can make the run in just 15 hours, but - Spoiler Alert - he doesn't make it... and neither does the muscle-bound coupe. The flick has been a cult favorite for years, and one of its fans, Bob Frederick of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, got some help from Chrysler to create 10 2011 Kowalski Edition Dodge Challengers.

Starting life as a traditional 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, these white coupes have had their stripes removed and a handful of options added on. Inside, a pistol-grip shifter sits at attention and a numbered dash plaque is mounted nearby. On the outside, the Kowalski Edition Challengers sport Mopar quad exhaust tips, Scat Pack Bee decals in the rear quarter windows and a tasteful Kowalski Edition decal on the rear spoiler.

All 10 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Kowalski Edition cars have been spoken for, so if any owners are reading this and want their car delivered quickly, we can help set that up. We promise to avoid bulldozers and the fuzz.

At the 2011 New York Auto Show, we asked Joseph Grace, vehicle line executive for the SRT line, about the specs on the new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 - specifically, why didn't they make it... more. The previous Grand Cherokee SRT8 was said to reach 60 miles per hour "in under five seconds" while the new one is pegged at 4.8 seconds. While that's an improvement of, at most, one-nineteenth of a second, it puts it right about square with the Mercedes ML63 AMG and at least three-tenths of a second adrift of the BMW X5 M.

But Grace said that wasn't really the point. "The major issues customers had that we wanted to address," he said, "were the ride, the exhaust, and fuel economy and range." This wasn't about making a faster SUV, it was about filling in the gaps of the previous model.

The center-mounted exhaust was swapped for dual pipes at the corners. The engine technologies - "it's the first time we've coupled all-out performance with cylinder deactivation and active exhaust," Grace said - have yielded better gas mileage and longer range.

The adaptive ride suspension developed in conjunction with Bilstein addresses the handling issues with five settings. On the matter of having a Track setting in such serious tonnage, Grace said "It was an application we had available with the adaptive damping." It shunts a little more torque to the rear wheels, going to a 60/40 front-to-rear split instead of 65/35, but Grace says "The track setting will keep the tires on the ground and makes [the ride] stiff but it can still be used on the road."

As for those German rivals, Grace said "We haven't announced pricing, but in comparison to the others it will be a benchmark in performance-for-value in a super-equipped vehicle."

A Jeep Grand Cherokee that's electronically limited to 155 miles per hour? A Jeep (JEEP!) that runs from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds? We must be talking about the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. No longer stuck drooling on our computers, we have finally had the chance to drool on its deep red paint in the flesh here at the New York Auto Show.

Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley had said he would have a hard time keeping a smile off his face when the SRT8 comes out. His glowing praise of the super-sport utility vehicle is to be expected. However, it's hard to argue with the numbers and the smiles on our own faces after seeing the thing. Under the hood sits a new 6.4-liter Hemi V8, which produces 465-horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. That's an improvement of 45 units in both categories.

Compared to the standard Grand Cherokee, the SRT8 wears a host of sporty exterior upgrades. Glowing LED lights and chrome accents pop in the front fascia. Under the bulging fenders sit a set of somewhat fussy 20-inch wheels wrapped with sticky Pirelli P Zero run flat tires while, out back, the massive four-inch exhaust tips promise a menacing bark.

Sports-car inspired touches continue inside the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8. Paddle-shifters sitting on the steering column help the driver gain an extra ounce of control. That driver will be held in place thanks to the leather and Alcantara-covered seats. Sitting between the speedometer and tach is the Performance Pages display, which is an invitation to constantly try to set new "high scores."

The 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the fastest Jeep ever produced. Mr. Manley cited that, though the top speed is limited to 155 mph, "you may know somebody...". We hope that we'll get to know this SRT8 real soon. High-res gallery below, press release waiting after the jump.

In March, Chrysler served up a smoking-hot 31 percent sales increase in compared to the same month in 2010. Unfortunately for the automaker, the "heat and serve" theme continued this week, as there were two stories about flaming Chrysler products Monday alone. First we told you about a Dodge Durango turned car-b-que in front of hundreds of onlookers at a Washington D.C. parade. Then came news that China has suspended importation of the Jeep Wrangler due to complaints of vehicle fires.

Now we have a photo of a Dodge Challenger (above) posted by Moparts forum poster Mccannix that allegedly went up in flames at the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant. There is no official cause for the fire, though as you can tell from the picture above the Challenger must have been really cooking.

One unsubstantiated report claims that a heat lamp got too close to some paperwork, which started the blaze. Even sadder is the fact that the high-end wheels tell us that we're likely looking at a burnt SRT8. A moment of silence, please.

We're still wrapping our heads around the appearance of the new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8, but we don't need even a second thought regarding its performance specifications. Just about anything sporting a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 putting out 465 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque will find a welcome bay in our garages, and this Charger is no exception.

Yes, the five-speed automatic is a bit of a disappointment in this day and age, but something tells us a few 12-second trips down the good ol' 1320 ought to ease that bit of pain, as would an autobahn blast at the Charger SRT8's 175 miles per hour top speed. If those tantalizing little tidbits are enough to whet your appetite for more, we highly suggest you click here to read the rest of the impressive specifications.

Naturally, you'll want to take a nice, long gander at the live photos from the 2011 Chicago Auto Show in our high-res image gallery below.

Dodge has dropped the Street and Racing Technology motherlode on the eve of the Chicago Auto Show and first out of the gate is the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 - what Eminem should've rolled in during the Super Bowl.

As with anything birthed from Chrysler's in-house tuning division, the Charger SRT8 is all about the engine, so the transformation begins with the new 6.4-liter HEMI V8 putting out 465 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque - a boost of some 80 lb-ft over the old 6.1-liter mill. That torquey wave comes on at 2,900 rpm and Dodge claims that with the fitment of its Fuel Saver tech, allowing the engine to run on four cylinders when its not under load, fuel economy will improve, although Dodge isn't saying how much.

Chrysler's W5A580 five-speed automatic transmission backs up the HEMI, and you can select your own gears by either slapping the AutoStick or thumbing the steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifters.

All that adds up to an estimated top speed of 175 mph, a 0-60 mph time in the high fours and a quarter-mile run deep into the 12s.

In addition to the five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum and polished wheels, the SRT crew saw fit to equip the SRT8 with an adaptive damping suspension with Auto and Sport settings that process speed, steering angle, brake pressure, throttle application and lateral acceleration. Brakes are sized 14.2-inches up front and 13.8-inches in the rear, with a new front fascia, LED taillamps and four-inch dual exhausts rounding out the exterior mods. And naturally, the interior isn't left out in the cold, with a flat-bottom steering wheel, heavily bolstered seats and a 900-watt, 19-speaker audio system courtesy of Harmon Kardon.

We'll be on the floor tomorrow to snag live pics of all the SRT-fettled goodies, but in the meantime, peep the gallery below and get all the details in the press release after the jump.

2011/2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 prototype - click above for high-res image gallery

It's no secret that Chrysler is unleashing redesigned versions of the 300 and Dodge Charger sedans this Fall and we've seen numerous images of them prowling the streets of suburban Detroit in recent months. Now another of Autoblog's eagle-eyed readers, Marty M., has dropped us a note to let us know that he had captured what appears to be the new SRT8 version of the Charger.

We're assuming this is the high-output Charger based on the size of the wheels and rear deck appendage, along with the depth of the front air dam. The freshly contoured flanks are visible under the camo, but we can't quite tell if there is a new piece of glass at the trailing edge of the rear doors. The new SRT8 engine is expected to grow from the current 6.1-liters to 6.4-liters with at least 450 horsepower, and shooter Marty tells us it sounds very much how a big V8 ought to. It isn't known if the high-performance SRT version of the next Charger will debut alongside its lesser linemates for model year 2011, or if it will hang out until it can earn a 2012 designation. Either way, it's time to get excited.
Thankfully, with the brand-new Grand Cherokee now entering showrooms, a new SRT8 is apparently on the way as well.

A low-riding, big-tired, deep-chinned Jeep has been spotted out testing with a trailer, and it looks to be the SRT8 successor. The new model will likely be powered by an upgraded Hemi that's punched out to 6.4-liters with an output boosted to 480 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

The prototype dispenses with the central exhaust tips on the old model in favor of more typical outboard pipes, which at least makes it easier to rig up a tow hitch. While this could change back for production, the fact that the prototype is toting a trailer could be a sign that Jeep wants to improve its utility beyond the 3,500 pounds of the outgoing model.

First and foremost among the predicted changes on the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 is more power from an enlarged 6.4-liter Hemi: a bump of 55 horsepower and 40 pound-feet of torque. That would put the big coupe at 480 ponies and 460 lb-ft., and rumor also has it that power will get to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission developed by Chrysler and ZF. Also according to Allpar's inside man, output levels will remain the same on the R/T model, while the base SE will get Pentastar V6 engines with 40 more horses and 20 more lb-ft, for 290 hp and 270 lb-ft. in total.

Most of the other supposed changes seem meant to make life easier for Chrysler and Challenger buyers. The floorpan is being reworked so the car fits more easily into Charger and 300 production, an electric power steering pump is coming onboard and an upgraded interior is in the offing. Cosmetically, the muscle car picks up the Charger's door handles, the Magnum wagon's hatch release button for its trunk, and the lower front grille gets turned upside down.
