At the launch of the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, officials acknowledged the automaker would be producing several additional hybrid models in the near future. Rumors have been floating around that the new 5 Series - due to launch in 2010 - will get the same mild hybrid system going into the ActiveHybrid 7 and its crossover counterpart, but what about BMW's smaller offerings?

Testing near Munich, a BMW 1 Series mule was caught wearing "Hybrid Test Vehicle" badging, proving that BMW's hybrid system won't be used exclusively on its larger models. Given the small size of the 1, this will undoubtedly use a version of the same mild hybrid system, a modular setup that has the motor/generator sandwiched between the engine and transmission with a compact lithium ion battery in the rear.

The 1 Series hybrid will take on the production version of the Lexus LF-Ch concept recently shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show when it hits the market in late 2011 or early 2012. The Lexus is similar in size to the 1er, but will only be offered as a hybrid, while the 1 will retain conventional powertrain options. There's no word whether the Lexus or the 1 Series Hybrid will make it onto U.S. shores, but if both automakers plan to recoup development expenses, sales in North America are almost assured.

Ford Fiesta S2000 rally car - Click above for high-res image gallery

CAR has just published what are believed to be the first pictures of the new Ford Fiesta S2000 rally car. With a few extra mods, it's set to take on all comers as Ford's 2011 WRC contender as well. It makes sense, because Ford has already confirmed (along with Citroen) that plan to enter both classes and they've confirmed that the Fiesta is the car they plan to run.

S2000 cars run naturally aspirated engines generating about 270 horsepower, while WRC cars can be turbocharged and run with tweaked bodywork.

The pics were shot during a shakedown run in Cumbria, England. According to CAR, a second car should be ready by the end of October with full homologation starting in January 2010. M-Sport is once again behind the build for Ford which reportedly took just six months this time around.

2010 Hyundai Santa Fe - click above for high-res image gallery

On the way into the office the morning, this blogger sat at a red light, only to notice a new Hyundai Santa Fe pulling up behind. A glance at the grille revealed that this was not the current model at dealerships, but rather the refreshed iteration that should be debuting in the not-too-distant future. Thankfully, a handy camera phone was on hand to snap the images in the gallery below.

As you can see from the photo above, Hyundai's middle crossover offering is getting a new grille in keeping with the one we recently saw on the upcoming new Sonata. The bumper area is also re-contoured into a more subtle version of what is scheduled for the new Tucson coming to the Los Angeles Auto Show. The headlight clusters retain the same shape, but internal detailing has been revised. At the back, new taillights and re-shaping of the bumper area is also visible. No word yet on mechanical changes, although a new direct-injected four-cylinder has been rumored.
Back in the 1950s, when tailfins were making annual progress toward low earth orbit, Volvo was cranking out PV444 and 544s. Those cars spent a good part of a decade looking like 1940s Fords, and so it's gone with Volvo's models. The iconic 200 series was in production for nearly 20 years, so while the current S60 was first teased nearly ten years ago, the fact that it's still on sale isn't that surprising given the brand's history of model longevity.

All the way back to Volvo's original stylist Jan Wilsgaard, the Swedish automaker has had good looking cars that stand up over time. Of course, a glance at the latest S60 sales figures might indicate that the public is using the car as an illustration of "long in tooth." Most of Volvo's range has been recently refreshed, but its important bread and butter sedan has been soldiering on largely unchanged from its 2005 mid-cycle freshening. Until now, that is.

The next S60's production styling has been captured by spy photographers, and the new duds follow the styling themes laid out by the recent XC60. The front end is smoother and more chiseled at the same time, and the bodysides pick up a character line where the current car wears a smooth radius. We think it looks good, it's a nice evolution of the original S60's handsome and well-proven styling, and should make Volvo a more attractive purchase when Ford eventually relents and admits it's for sale. Follow the source to see the new S60 in full. Thanks for the tip, Casey!

The news media has turned its empty head to the deeper world of automotive coverage, beyond the front lines of dismal sales numbers and Cash For Clunkers.

None other than spy photographer extraodinaire Brenda Priddy has now been on the receiving end of the gentle, semi-informative coverage mainstream news is so deft at cranking out. A quick package on ABC's flagship World News Tonight broadcast was but a precursor to a more in-depth piece on Nightline that blows Brenda's cover and profiles her hard work in the searing desert heat. Hit the jump to view both videos. Thanks for all your tips!

[Source: ABC News]

With the arrival of the Panamera, it's no longer the most controversial looking vehicle in the company's product portfolio, though its road-scorching edge remains undiminished in turbo form. A new Cayenne is coming in gas, diesel, and hybrid flavors, and a fresh spy shot has surfaced showing what may well be the reshaped keister of the next model.

It's got a bit of Volkswagen in it, maybe, but check those wheels and the way the lower valance is a diffusery thing - very Porsche-esque. If it is the Cayenne, this next generation might actually look okay while it continues to defy physics. Before we get too vitriolic, the Cayenne's volume has helped make 911s and Caymans possible - and for that, we say thank you.

[Source: GermanCarBlog]
Spy Shots: Is this the next Porsche Cayenne? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 10:29:00 EST. The spy shot shows a heavily camouflaged prototype with its front and rear end covered. Despite the aversion tactics, we can see a new version of Lincoln's flying wing grille that appears smaller than the current one. AutoWeek points out its similarity to a BMW grille, while we think it looks like the front end of a Pontiac G6 beneath the mesh bra.

The MKS lineup will grow by one model this year when Lincoln begins selling it with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 that produces 355 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Some here at Autoblog HQ have posited that Lincoln could (or should) be working on a sportier version of the MKS EcoBoost, kind of like a Taurus SHO for the CEO. This prototype could be something to that effect, but we have nothing to back up our guess but wishful thinking.

[Source: AutoWeek]
Spy Shots: Lincoln MKS already under the knife originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 14:58:00 EST. At least now the Lancer won't be the only Mitsu wearing a grille cribbed from the '57 Chrysler 300. The new front fascia will include angry-eye headlamps and appears to be the only external change to the Outlander during its mid-cycle freshening. A gaggle of engineers were rumored to be fussing over the cars that spy photogs snagged in the Western US desert, which may mean powertrain changes. Can we cast our vote for an Evo powertrain under the new sheetmetal?

[Source: World Car Fans]

Spy Shots: Mitsubish Outlander getting Lancer face originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Sep 2008 09:28:00 EST. The latest capture we've received comes from reader Charlie Hung, who recently spotted this black roadster on a Southern California freeway. A quick inspection of the images reveals it to be the next-generation BMW Z4 that's been spotted periodically for some time now. The bodywork on BMW's latest offerings would suggest that the current Z4's flame surfacing will probably be radically toned down. Much of the contouring we see on this prototype is likely just camouflage. Underhood, we'll probably get the same powertrain lineup as the 3 Series, with the next M Roadster getting the M3's V8. Judging from the size of the rear window, the Z4 will probably pick up a retractable hard top as well. When the new Z4 debuts, BMW will move production from its current home Spartanburg, SC to Germany. Spartanburg will take over production of the X3 crossover.

Gallery: BMW Z4 SoCal Spy Shots

[Source: Charlie Hung]
Spy Shots: Next gen BMW Z4 snapped again on SoCal freeway originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 19 Jul 2008 16:08:00 EST. While the two pics don't reveal much, the front end bears more than a striking resemblance to the Kia KND-4 concept from the 2007 Seoul Motor Show. Unlike the current Kia Sorento, currently built on a body-on-frame platform, the next Sorento will share a unibody platform with the Hyundai Santa Fe. Engine choices are only speculative, but we're betting the Sorento will receive either 3.3-liter or 3.8-liter V6 powerplant options. The next-gen Sorento is scheduled to start production in Kia's new plant in West Point, Georgia, in 2009.

BMW's cooking up a new X3, expected to drop in 2011, and the changes don't look to be huge. The smallest SAV - BMW's acronym for <strike>Stupid Ass </strike>Sports Activity Vehicle - will get rhinoplasty to bring some Concept CS cues to the X3. The heavy camo on the rear windows suggest that BMW might be addressing some of the awkwardness that afflicts the current model, a definite plus. Word is that much sweat will be expended over an updated interior in order to keep up with competitors. A less-hideous X3 that retains its chassis moves while coddling you with a better interior? Sounds good to us, even though we'd still rather have an M3 wagon.

[Source: BMW blog, Photo: Priddy]

Spy Shots: 2011 BMW X3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 18:32:00 EST. The Beat is certainly far less dowdy than the Spark, which is also sold, sometimes gratuitously, as the Matiz in other markets. When the Beat debuted as one in a trio of concepts, it was the sportiest of the three and described as a "tuner car" offering substantial levels of customization at the retail level, much like a Scion. That rhetoric may not be for world-wide consumption, however, and the Beat could wind up looking sharp on the outside and offering you roll-your-own windows and milk jug-quality plastics in the cabin. Of course, GM could pull a Ford and deliver a deliciously stylish small car everywhere but the United States, just as our fuel costs skyrocket ever further. Thanks for the tip, Kevin!

[Source: China Car Times]

Spy Shots: Chevy Beat caught testing in China originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 07:29:00 EST. It's the F-250/450 Super Duty version of Ford's cobranding enterprise with Harley-Davidson, and can surely tow a few more bikes behind its bed than the half-ton version. Since this big bruiser from Milwaukee via Dearbon hasn't been officially unveiled yet, we can't tell you any details beyond what the spy pics show. Expect a set of nice chrome wheels, a catchy paint job, and badging, lots of badging. The grille up front gets the same slim bars seen on the F-150 version, as well.

Man, how embarassed would you be rolling up to Sturgis behind the wheel of your 2007 F-150 Harley-Davidson and seeing some Hell's Angels fella bombing around in the Super Duty version? Most of the time it's triggered by a photographer taking pictures of the Top Secret car he's driving, at which point the engineer freaks and attempts to kill the offending snapper via vehicular homicide. It happened to our buddy Chris Doane last summer when a Ford engineer tried to flatten him with an F-250 mule. This time a group of Toyota engineers driving an IS 350 chase vehicle, RX hybrid development mule and an unidentified car covered entirely in camo (next-gen Prius?) reportedly began messing with some guys from GTChannel.com who were taking pics of the cars on their camera phone.

As far as we know, taking a picture of a vehicle that's driving around on public roads is not illegal, but legality aside, attempting to cause an accident is not an appropriate and measured response. Reading the account on GTChannel.com seriously makes our blood boil, since this cat and mouse game we call spy photography is something we all enjoy that ultimately helps automakers more than it hurts. Any driver acting this way on behalf of an automaker should be fired on the spot, and if this behaviour is actually sanctioned by automakers, then these companies need to reevaluate their priorities pronto. Certainly the public exposure of a development mule is not more important than the life and well being of a human being. Right?

Click the Read link to view the rest of GTChannel.com's pics.

[Source: GT Channel]
Spy Shots: Future Toyotas snapped while risking life and limb originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Apr 2007 16:57:00 EST. Shown winter testing someplace where it's really cold and snowy, this 9-3 SportCombi test mule is sporting a new grille design that evokes the longish snout of the Aero X that was so well received at last year's Geneva Motor Show. Swade notes the new nose isn't a total transfer of the Aero X's look, probably because this refreshening will be a transition face for the 9-3 that bridges the current model and an all-new model that's still a few years out. Nevertheless, this grille is much taller than the current model's, and therefore the smallish intakes anchored to the headlights stretch farther down towards the center now to meet the main grille. Also noted is black tape at the top of each headlamp that could be covering a strip of LED daytime running lights.

[Source: Trollhattan.net]
Spy Shots: 2008 Saab 9-3 shaping up with Aero X cues originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 14:58:00 EST. Maybe it's conditioning from all of those cover shots and glowing comments about BMWs over the years on Car and Driver and Motor Trend. It could be that we all know BMWs are just a hoot to drive, with laser-sharp steering and teriffic acceleration. They get a lot of looks too, which can be a good or bad thing.

The BMW in question is reported to be the 2010 5-Series. It looks darn good, with some Mercedes Benz CLS from the side and some 3 Series up front. It amazes us exactly how professional these renderings look. There is even the reflection of a tree in the passenger side window. It may be just a clever rendering, but we think it's worth looking at either way.

Thanks goes out to JP for the tip.

They're good cars, people say, once you get to know them. Well, cars are largely sold on first impressions, and the 500 and Montego are both getting a second chance to make a good first impression with buyers. We saw the updated 2008 Ford Five-Hundred at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month, and here's our first look at the updated Mercury Montego that will likely be debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in early February.

The front end is clearly inspired by the more fashionable Milan with headlights that sweep back up into the hood. The new grille is placed within a recessed part of the front end that dips down into the bumper and gives the Montego's face a lot more character. Out back are new white taillights and a new rear bumper that now houses the Montego's license plate. It's certainly not a full redesign, but we'd call it a sorely needed refreshening that ensures you won't lose your Montego in a crowded parking lot anymore.

[Source: World Car Fans]
Spy Shots: Mercury Montego refresh originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 26 Jan 2007 12:26:00 EST. Sporting a wheelbase probably longer than the original MINI itself, the Traveller adds at least a foot to the length of the standard MINI. Rear passengers will be able to access their seats through a rear-hinged suicide door on the passenger side, but as you can see from the pic, the driver's side sports a side window that's one long expanse of uninterrupted glass. No suicide door on that side, thank you very much. The benefit of the Traveller's extra inches seem relegated solely to additional space behind the rear bench, effectively making a MINI with a big trunk. While the look is all MINI, hopefully BMW engineers can maintain the same sharp handling and go-kart steering that makes the swb MINI so fun to drive.

[Source: The Car Connection]

Related posts:
Spy Photos: 2008 MINI Traveller
MINI Traveller redubbed Clubman
MINI to show special version of Traveller concept in Detroit
MINI Clubman opens its doors
Spy Shots: MINI Traveller/Clubman originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 18:02:00 EST. This time it's a Nissan Teana, a large sedan sold by the Japanese automaker in its home market and abroad, but not in the U.S. So what's it doing in a Barnes & Noble parking lot in Brighton, MI? Your guess is as good as ours, but this isn't the first time a right-hand drive Teana has been seen in the U.S.

Many have posited that Nissan is preparing an answer to the Toyota Avalon, though most auto pundits agree that Nissan already has several smart responses for the Avalon in the Altima, Maxima and their rear-wheel drive sibling, the Infiniti G35. The Maxima is already the odd one out in Nissan's lineup, so adding the Teana would only serve to give Nissan's customers a third choice in the front-wheel drive, mid-size segment and further fragment the brand's four-door sedan sales. In our estimation the Maxima needs to go, which would instantly make more cap space for something the likes of the Teana in Nissan's lineup. There is certainly a market for large front-wheel drive sedans above a brand's mid-size offering, as not only the Avalon, but also the Ford Five-Hundred and Chevy Impala have proven. The Maxima, however, is too close to the Altima to fill that role for Nissan. The Teana, however, is demonstrably larger than the Altima, and with Buick-like suspension tuning and a powerful VQ V6 underhood could hopefully attract a different audience.

[Source: Winding Road]
Spy Shots: Nissan Teana in Michigan originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Nov 2006 17:32:00 EST.
