You simply have to, and that's all there is to it. Ferrari does with the 458 Spider, just as it did with the F430, 360, 355 and 348 before it. Lamborghini does with the Gallardo. Audi does with the R8. And soon McLaren will with the MP4-12C. We know it will - it's just a matter of time. And now it appears that time is coming up soon.

Caught by in spy shots by Britain's Car magazine, the MP4-12C Spyder carries a folding solid roof mechanism - not unlike that found in the 458, but unlike the Ferrari's, does not hide the engine. That's because the system is more of a targa top. It's reportedly being built for McLaren by Webasto and - intriguingly enough - Lotus, made of aluminum and plastic, and can deploy or retract in about 17 seconds while rolling at up to five mph.

Otherwise it's expected to be mechanically identical to the fixed-roof version, complete with twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 pumping 592 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Expect the 12C Spyder to roll out some time later this year - in time for the summer, if McLaren's as smart and quick about it as it is with most things.
McLaren MP4-12C Spyder caught on camera with its top down originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 08:33:00 EST.
It's one thing to quietly anticipate the arrival of something exciting. It's quite another when you can actually see it coming, so here's a batch of spy shots showing the next-generation Dodge Viper under development.

Don't get too excited, though, because there's little to see from this early test mule. It's largely wearing the bodywork from the last Viper, and what's new is heavily disguised. What we can tell is that the headlights stretch back farther over the hood than the previous model, above the updated crosshair grille now in use across the Dodge model range. The placement of the air scoops and hood louvers appear different, and from what we can see at least, the front end seems to be more refined than its brutish predecessors.

Of course, it's what's behind that new front end that counts. It may be too early to say if the V10 will return of whether regulatory restrictions will force Chrysler to go with something slightly more "responsible," but you can bet it'll have more electronic nannies in place, and if the rapidly-integrating Fiat/Chrysler empire plays its cards right, Dodge's Italian sisters could bring some experience to bear. And that can't be a bad thing.
Next-gen Dodge Viper mule caught wearing new front end originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 14 Aug 2011 11:58:00 EST.
Where would you expect to find Santa Fe? Why, in the desert, of course! And that's just where this Hyundai prototype was heading to undergo hot-weather testing. But on the way, the engineers apparently needed to take a rest, and our intrepid team of spy photographers found this test mule sitting in the parking lot of a motel.

The result is our first look at the next-generation Korean crossover. Although it's wearing a bra that would make Christina Hendricks blush and more body-cladding than a whole army of medieval knights, what we can tell is that the next-gen Santa Fe adopts some of the same styling cues that have made Hyundai's latest sedans so popular. But don't take our word for it: click through to check out the extensive gallery of spy shots from every angle both day and night for a closer look.
Next-gen Hyundai Santa Fe heads for the desert originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 14:29:00 EST. Looks to us like a Lamborghini Aventador prototype wearing the wheels from a Bugatti Veyron. The question is, why would an Aventador need the rolling stock from a Veyron?

Is Lamborghini preparing an Aventador Sang Arancio edition? Maybe, but not likely. More likely is that the Raging Bull gang is working on a high-speed version of the Aventador, and have borrowed the Bugatti's wheels and tires - which were specifically developed for high-speed running - in order to put it through its paces.

Of course there is another possibility we can't discount: namely, that Bugatti is preparing to use the Aventador's platform for a new supercar of its own. But with expectations that the Galibier will be the next to wear the EB letters, we're gonna go with the high-speed Lambo prospect and keep our eyes and ears peeled for more.
Lamborghini working on 250-mph Aventador? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 08:30:00 EST.
There's a new BMW 6 Series out there. The new M5 has been released. You know what that means, boys and girls: that's right, a new M6.

Now we've already seen spy shots of both the upcoming M6 coupe and convertible, but this is our best look at it yet, bearing even less camouflage than before. The overall shape, of course, is no big surprise, as it follows the more standard 6 Series, although these latest shots appear to display a new taillight treatment that moves the auxiliary light strip from the bumper up to the rear panel.

The powertrain, meanwhile, is expected to be lifted directly out of the new M5 - all 560 horsepower, eight cylinders and twin turbos of it. Couple that with more aggressive aero, upsized rolling stock and the requisite chassis mods and you've got a winning package.

With this much of the car revealed to our prying eyes, we can expect the new M6 to drop in short order - which is also what we expect it to make of any road you can throw at it.
BMW M6 coupe shows off a little more skin originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 13:01:00 EST.
Work is well underway on Cadillac's upcoming new flagship. The XTS is slated to replace both the STS and DTS, and while this isn't the first time we've seen a test mule out in the open, it could be our best glimpse yet.

The new sedan is said to be riding on an extended version of General Motors' Epsilon II platform - the same architecture that underpins the Buick Regal and LaCrosse, the next Chevrolet Malibu and the new Saab 9-5. Power is expected to come in naturally-aspirated and turbocharged V6 forms, driving either the front wheels or all four depending on specification, when it comes along likely sometime late next year as a 2013 model. A turbocharged four has also been rumored, and of course we'd love to see a high-output XTS-V.

Our intrepid paparazzi say the XTS prototypes are wearing very similar camouflage to the much smaller ATS - which was beefed up to disguise its form under development. Very clever, GM, but not clever enough. Take a look at the spy shots in our gallery for a closer look.
Cadillac XTS draws closer originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Jun 2011 16:58:00 EST.
While Honda may have to delay rolling out the successor to the current CR-V crossover, a shortage of parts resulting from the crisis in Japan doesn't mean it isn't still working on the project. And while we hadn't seen any prototypes running before, we've now received our first glimpse.

The test mule in this solitary spy shot is wearing a bra over the front end and some taping around the hind quarters, but is otherwise fairly naked for all to see. So what are we looking at? Heavily revised styling for a start, with tail-lights that extend up the D-pillar like the current model but with a rather Volvo-like shape to them. Our intrepid auto spies also suggest the extended rear end could be making room for a third row of seats (wonder what that D-pillar tape job is hiding?), but from where we sit, it looks mighty cramped.

Beyond the design, we can expect a slightly more powerful and more efficient version of the current model's 2.4-liter VTEC four. Expect production to begin in Ohio and Ontario before winter rolls back around.
Is this 2012 Honda CR-V test mule packing a third row of seats? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 May 2011 13:58:00 EST.
There are some things in this world that, no matter how many there are, we can never get quite enough. Like sleep. Or Victoria's Secret lingerie models. (Or ideally, a combination of the two.) And of course, mid-engined Italian supercars.

The next expected to join the fold is De Tomaso. The long-dormant marque has been revived by former Fiat executive Gian Mario Rossignolo, but as for its first debut - the Deauville crossover - let's just say it's not what we were looking forward to most. No, that role will be filled by the revival of De Tomaso's most iconic model: the Pantera.

The new supercar is expected to debut in the fall at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which means development must be well under way by now. Exhibit A: the video after the jump, which shows a barely-disguised prototype rolling out of De Tomaso's headquarters in Modena, Italy. It looks the part and certainly sounds it, as well. But don't take our word for it - follow the jump to watch the short spy clip for yourself.
Continue reading De Tomaso's new Pantera spied leaving Modena factory

De Tomaso's new Pantera spied leaving Modena factory originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 May 2011 13:59:00 EST.
Typically, when an automaker is preparing to unveil a new car, we get a look at the styling and then the technical details. But Lamborghini is used to doing things backwards. It was, after all, one of the first automakers to build a mid-engine sportscar, and was also the one that got its start reverse-engineering Ferraris with tractor parts. And the backwards tradition continues with the highly anticipated Murciélago successor.

Though Sant'Agata has been gradually releasing details of the supercar's mechanicals - including the pushrod suspension, 6.5-liter V12 and ISR transmission - glimpses at the car's design have been few and far between. This swirly job "spy shot", ostensibly leaked from the factory, has been circulating the internet like a viral video, and gives us one of our best looks yet at the car's shape.

Though the camouflage does a good job of breaking up the body's lines, you can still discern a healthy dose of Reventón-like fighter jet-inspired design cues in the beast expected to be called the Aventador LP700-4. With less than a month to go before it makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, there'll undoubtedly be more to come soon, so watch this space.

2011/2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 prototype - click above for high-res image gallery

It's no secret that Chrysler is unleashing redesigned versions of the 300 and Dodge Charger sedans this Fall and we've seen numerous images of them prowling the streets of suburban Detroit in recent months. Now another of Autoblog's eagle-eyed readers, Marty M., has dropped us a note to let us know that he had captured what appears to be the new SRT8 version of the Charger.

We're assuming this is the high-output Charger based on the size of the wheels and rear deck appendage, along with the depth of the front air dam. The freshly contoured flanks are visible under the camo, but we can't quite tell if there is a new piece of glass at the trailing edge of the rear doors. The new SRT8 engine is expected to grow from the current 6.1-liters to 6.4-liters with at least 450 horsepower, and shooter Marty tells us it sounds very much how a big V8 ought to. It isn't known if the high-performance SRT version of the next Charger will debut alongside its lesser linemates for model year 2011, or if it will hang out until it can earn a 2012 designation. Either way, it's time to get excited.

The Paris Motor Show in just over a month is shaping up to the be one of the biggest shows for Lotus in many decades. While the highlight is expected to be a new supercar successor to the departed Esprit, it apparently won't be alone. At least two additional occupants of the Lotus stand have been accidentally confirmed, including an Evora Automatic and a hotted-up Evora S.

This second iteration of the newest Lotus is expected to receive a supercharger bolted to its 3.5-liter Toyota V6 boosting it up to 350 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The brakes and thermal requirements of the base Evora have reportedly been sized for more powerful models so they won't need upgrading for the S.

A prototype of what's believed to be the Evora S was caught outside the Nürburgring this week preparing for its public debut. The only notable visual difference for the S appears to be a more prominent rear diffuser. Check out the little red devil by taking a closer look at our high-res gallery below.
With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Autocar is reporting that Mercedes-Benz is also working on an AMG variant of the coupe to go up against the Audi RS5, BMW M3 and Cadillac CTS-V.

The British magazine is reporting that the coupe will use the same AMG 6.2-liter normally aspirated V8 as one of our favorite Benz sedans, the C63 AMG. However, if this car is to debut later in 2011 as projected, it would seem logical that Mercedes might switch to the new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that's going into the 2011 CL63.

The turbo V8 could the output from the current 451 horsepower to somewhere closer to 500 hp. Autocar also speculates that a C63 Black Series coupe could be a followup to an upcoming SLS Black Series.

Eagle-eyed Autoblog reader James spotted a camouflaged compact hatchback sitting in a parking lot in South Korea the other day, and fortunately for us, he had a camera with him. At first glance, this is obviously a new Hyundai based on the upward sweeping crease along the side that is characteristic of Hyundai's new 'fluidic sculpture' design language.

Closer examination indicates that this is almost certainly the five-door hatchback version of the new Verna/Accent that debuted at the Beijing Motor Show in April. The wheels are the same as the ones we saw on the Verna and the side crease extends ahead of the door cut-line which differs from the Elantra that debuted a week later at the Busan show in Korea.

Also somewhat visible is the rocker panel indentation ahead of the rear wheels that is characteristic of the Accent. We expect the North American market Accent to debut some time this Fall, perhaps at the Los Angeles or Detroit Auto Show.

New spy photos have turned up showing a standard-cab version of the Volkswagen Amarok... snagged testing on Germany's Nürburgring, of all places. Up until now, the Amarok pickup has only been seen with a short-bed, crew-cab configuration, but the new standard-cab is expected to go on sale in 2011. The thick B-pillar should mean that the seats will have some space behind them to allow for storage or adjustment for more leg-room.

The current Amarok is only available with either four- or all-wheel-drive, but the new version is expected to have a rear-wheel drive base model as well. Judging by the relatively plain trim on this prototype, it appears that Volkswagen is aiming to offer a lower cost work truck similar to the pickups that are commonly sold to commercial fleets here in the United States.

The 163 horsepower 2.0-liter diesel is expected to carry over to the standard-cab with a dual-clutch DSG gearbox joining the existing six-speed manual box. As far as we know, there are still no plans to offer the Amarok in the North American market. Oh, and we're also not sure if the Amorok was able to set any new 'Ring records... but probably not.
Thankfully, with the brand-new Grand Cherokee now entering showrooms, a new SRT8 is apparently on the way as well.

A low-riding, big-tired, deep-chinned Jeep has been spotted out testing with a trailer, and it looks to be the SRT8 successor. The new model will likely be powered by an upgraded Hemi that's punched out to 6.4-liters with an output boosted to 480 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

The prototype dispenses with the central exhaust tips on the old model in favor of more typical outboard pipes, which at least makes it easier to rig up a tow hitch. While this could change back for production, the fact that the prototype is toting a trailer could be a sign that Jeep wants to improve its utility beyond the 3,500 pounds of the outgoing model.
Given the timing, we're guessing the new 508 sedan will get its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September and then go on sale late this year or in early 2011.

The 508 will likely share most of its underpinnings with the Citroen C5 and be powered by range of engines, starting with a gasoline 1.6-liter inline-four,and topping out with a 3.0-liter 240-horsepower diesel V6. The 508 is also expected to be available with Peugeot's new Hybrid4 through-the-road hybrid system.

This uses an internal combustion engine with a conventional transmission at the front wheels and an electric motor and battery for the rear axle. It's mechanically simpler than power-split systems like those from Toyota, and it offers on-demand all-wheel-drive.
Get your torrents warmed up! The new season of Top Gear finally airs tomorrow night in the UK (don't even get us started on why BBC America is still running something like season 7 right now), and the boys are unveiling an all-new reasonably-priced car.

The old Chevrolet Lacetti has been sent of off to the scrap heap and it looks like Richard Hammond gets the honor of pulling the sheet of the new car. Someone snapped a pic during rehearsals this week, and we've got some clues as to what the new star car might be.

The best guess appears to be the compact Kia Cee'd, a decent-looking little hatch that's not available in North America. The general shape and the lights seem to be a pretty good match, as are the wheels. We still don't know who this week's celebrity hotshoe will be, but we'll be checking it as soon as we can. A tip of the hat to Rudy!

Mystery prototype - Click above for high-res image gallery

One of our alert readers was driving down Woodward Avenue in suburban Detroit when he spotted a prototype and quickly snapped off a few photos. That's where the mystery starts. We're honestly not sure what this sedan is.

Being in Michigan, it almost certainly belongs to either the Detroit three, Toyota, Nissan or Hyundai, all of whom have technical centers in the area. From the front view, an elliptical badge area is visible which points to Ford, Toyota or Hyundai. Judging by its footprint, it's clearly a mid-size to large car and the shape of the mirrors is consistent with the new Sonata.

So based on these few clues, we're going to climb out on the proverbial limb and predict that this is most likely either a next generation Hyundai Azera or even the new Camry. Posit your own guesses below?
Judging by the latest spy pics, it looks like the Saab 9-4x is fully baked and ready to hit the streets. Saab has stripped the camo off the integration prototypes for the new 9-4x crossover and it doesn't appear to have changed much since the original concept debuted at the Detroit Auto Show two years ago.

AutoExpress reports that production has begun at the same Ramos Arizpe, Mexico plant that produces the Cadillac SRX, although our sources indicate that production is still a few months off and considering the time frame, it's safe to assume that the production 9-4X will debut at the Paris Motor Show this September.

Like the concept, the production 9-4x will likely be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, with an optional 2.8-liter turbo V6 from the Turbo-X and the in the Cadillac SRX. AE is also reporting that the Saab will offer a 2.9-liter turbodiesel developed with VM Motori which might be the V6 that was once planned for the European market Cadillac CTS.

2011/2012 Hyundai Sonata wagon - Click above for high-res image gallery

We recently published some renderings of what a station wagon variant of the new Hyundai Sonata might look like, and we now have our first actual photos of the real thing undergoing testing. While it (predictably) doesn't feature the two-door shooting brake layout we might have hoped for, it actually does look quite close to the four-door image. Hyundai designers appear to have opted for more of a sporty slant-back look like the Audi Avant wagons than the more utilitarian box we typically get from Volvo.

When the Sonata launches in Europe, it is expected to adopt the current iXX naming convention used there to become the i40 Kombi. Europeans will apparently get the wagon first, followed by the sedan. At present, it remains unclear if the wagon will ever arrive in the States. From what we can see through the camo, the i40 will get a different grille from the North American model, as well as a different treatment around the base of the A-pillar. At least on this prototype, the Euro-version has chrome trim that wraps around the mirror, while the chrome on the American variant extends straight down to the trailing edge of the headlamp cluster.
