We've never been fond of blatantly pimping the sites of our colleagues, but if (like us) you've been jonesing for tech-rich features and import performance stories after the unfortunate demise of Sport Compact Car and Turbo, MotoIQ has stepped up to fill the void.

Headed up by Mike Kojima and featuring the insightful scribblings of Eric Hsu, Sarah Forst and Dave Coleman, MotoIQ's first few months of publication have erred on the Nissan-centric side. But recently they've added both a Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Evolution X to their stable of project cars, along with documented the progress of their Scion tC Speed World Challenge racer and work on a Honda motorcycle.

Thanks to Kojima, it's overly geeky (which we like) and Coleman's return to the world of writing has provided plenty of laughs around Autoblog HQ. If sport compact performance is your thing, it's worth checking out. We wouldn't lead you astray, would we?
MotoIQ provides sport compact geeks a port in the storm originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 09:00:00 EST. The death of SCC follows Source Interlink's execution of Turbo earlier this year, and reports suggest that 115 employees inside the company have been given the boot and more titles could be axed in the future.

Sport Compact Car was the go-to title for gearheads obsessed with small displacement engines, forced induction, number crunching and the black arts of ECU and suspension tuning, with a dedicated focus on down-and-dirty tech, unique reviews, stellar writing and going fast on a budget. Both the page count and circulation numbers have dropped over the last five years, although according to our sources, ad revenue was up and distribution was holding steady.

On a personal note, SCC was the magazine that got this scribe hooked on driving and the finer points of air-to-fuel ratios, provided me with my first freelance gig and inspired me - primarily through the writings of Dave Coleman, Josh Jacquot, Mike Kojima, Andy Hope, James Tate, John Pearley Huffman and Jared Holstein, among many others - to pursue my dream of writing about cars. SCC will be sorely missed and the world is truly a worse place without it.

Hit the jump to see a list of everyone who has made Sport Compact Car possible over the last two decades.

UPDATE: <strike>We've gotten word that </strike><strike>Truck Trend</strike><strike> has also been canned</strike>.

According to Sport Compact Car Magazine, the 2007 Ultimate Street Car is a 2001 Audi S4. For those not in the know, the Ultimate Street Car Challenge is an annual two day event hosted by the editors of Sport Compact Car Magazine. Competitors from all over the country are hand selected to battle it out in every aspect of custom street car engineering. These are not trailer queens, people. They are real, street driven monsters. Performance and appearance are not the only deciding factors; emissions, fuel economy and ride comfort make up a significant portion of the score, as well.

This year's winning 2001 Audi S4 belongs to Brent Mattraw and was tuned by Torque Factory in Venice, California. The Audi's winning combination did not come from intensive custom fabricated modifications or all out engine blueprinting, but rather attention to the Audi's weak points. The S4 kept its sophisticated European luxury style but received stronger connecting rods, a better sealing head gasket, higher flowing turbochargers and a reworked differential along with a few other bolt-on performance bits. However, the car was not completely devoid of potential deal breaking modifications. It uses a little bit of nitrous to help get the job done.

The Audi beat out a handful of other well qualified vehicles to be crowned champion. They include a C5 Corvette Z06, Infiniti G35, Subaru WRX STI, R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R, Nissan 300ZX, Toyota Supra, Acura Integra, BMW 2002 and even an Ariel Atom. The owner has listed Tommykaira R #357 on eBay. It's one of 400 total R33 Skyline GT-R-badged Tommykaira Rs, which were sold as complete vehicles through Tommykaira. This one doesn't sport the optional widebody kit that was available (and widely purchased, according to Sport Compact Car), making it even more of a rarity. It's fully federalized and recently laid down 401 AWHP at a dyno session. This Tommykaira Skyline is is the only one of its kind in the US, and it's a complete street banshee. There isn't one of us here at Autoblog who doesn't wish he had an extra $93K lying around. You can view the auction listing here, and if you'd like to read the original Sport Compact Car piece, click here. (The owner reprinted the SCC article in the eBay listing to use as a vehicle description). If we had this car, we'd never have to play Gran Turismo again.

Thanks to Johnnyichiban for the tip!

[Source: eBay]
eBay Find of the Day: Tommykaira R #357 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 16:58:00 EST.
