Move over Jaguar XJ220. At 217 mph, your top end is just too slow. Hell, move over Batmobile. Why? The Aston Martin One-77, Britain's most expensive car ever, is now nearly its fastest. If not for the pesky, eternal problem of the McLaren F1 and its 241 mph top end, the One-77 would be the fastest production car in the history of Old Blighty. As it stands, or in this case flies, a One-77 has just crested 220 mph.

Can the latest and no question greatest from Aston Martin go even faster? Probably, as AM was quick to point out, that the 220 mph velocity was achieved in "dry, but windy conditions." Never forget the amount of power this 7.3-liter V12 beastie makes - between 700 and 740 horsepower, and around 553 lb-ft of torque. For the sake of national pride, the McLaren F1 produced "just" 627 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Obviously, the 2,514 pound F1 is much lighter than the 3,308 pound One-77, however, which actually makes 220 mph run all the more impressive.

0-60 mph? Quarter mile? Lateral acceleration? We don't know yet, but we do know that Aston Martin will keep us up to date as soon as all that information gets logged. For its part, the matte gray beauty you see above is at a "top secret proving ground in southern Europe" where its being flogged about in anticipation of the One-77's mid-2010 release. If not for the £1.25 million price tag (just shy of $2M Yankee bucks), we'd be losing sleep. Full press release after the jump.

Hennessey has a long history of making big horsepower, usually involving turbochargers. This in-car video from a breathed-on Viper shows off just how quickly Hennessey's mods can make the scenery blur. We really hate the sound of the fuel pump at the beginning of the clip - it's loud and obtrusive, and covers up a lopey idle from the V10. We're going to go out on a limb here and state that the cam isn't stock, and that's where the bumpy idle comes from. The fuel pump is quickly forgotten when the run starts. After a soft-shoe launch to maintain traction, the driver lays into it. The twin huffers sing their banshee song, things get real fast in a hurry, and ultimately 220 MPH is achieved in 24.1 seconds. General Motors reported mixed results on the salt flats Tuesday, with the day marred by a 250-mph crash of the Chevy So-Cal HHR (top, right).

So-Cal HHR driver and GM engineer Jim Minneker walked away from the HHR wreck, which happened after the car lost traction at nearly 250 mph when the parachute deployed. Minneker was on track to beat the G Class/Blown Fuel Competition Coupe record after hitting the long course speed traps at 246.686 mph (nearly 20 mph faster than the old record) before the crash.

On a brighter note, the So-Cal Speed Shop-built Chevy Cobalt SS (bottom, right) looks set to blow the doors off the G Class/Blown Fuel Altered Coupe record with a blistering 246.680 qualifying run. Driver Mark Dickens hopes to back up that run and break the Cobalt's previous record of 218.392 mph set two days ago. Meanwhile, the record-setting "Student Cobalt", also driven by Wickens, upped its G Class/Unblown Fuel Competition Coupe record to 163.608 mph, this time running its E85-fueled Ecotec with nitrous oxide injection, good for a 7 mph lift.

A Chevrolet Cobalt SS racecar engineered in part by three female students is heading for the Bonneville Salt Flats this week, in an attempt to set speed records using both E85 and gasoline.

If the student's Cobalt project is successful, it will be the first vehicle to set a record at Bonneville using E85 fuel, racing in the G Class/Unblown Fuel Competition Coupe class. Running gasoline, the car will also run in G CLass/Unblown Gas Competition Coupe class.

GM Co-op students Lauren Zimmer, Sandra Saldivar and Heather Chemistruck are part of GM Performance Division's Student Bonneville Program.

The fuel-injected "Go Yellow" Cobalt will be joined by a trio of GM Performance Bonneville entries powered by blown versions of the General's Ecotec four-banger: the Chevy So-Cal Bonneville HHR, the Chevy So-Cal Cobalt SS, and the Ecotec Lakester.
