If you're driving to see relatives near Baltic, South Dakota (because, honestly, there isn't too much else to see or do there), you'll be able to fill up your tank with cheap E85 just before Thanksgiving. Midway Service Station at 525402 475th Avenue in Baltic is offering E85 at $1.85 a gallon from 3 pm until 6 pm on Wednesday. The first 25 people, moreover, will be able to fill up even cheaper, at $0.85 a gallon.
A team of South Dakota mechanics from Yankton Auto Machine earned second-place honors in an engine-building contest with a motor that runs on ethanol. Problems with the engine efficiency tests proved to be a setback but the team still built an engine that scored well enough in the horsepower test. There were six teams in the contest sponsored by the American Engine Rebuilders Assn.
South Dakota is making it a little bit easier to see Mt. Rushmore or the Corn Palace in a green car. The state office of tourism is mailing out up to 3,000 $20 ethanol vouchers to drivers to spend when they fill up with some sort of ethanol-related fuel in South Dakota. As of today, there are 64 participating gas stations in the state, but more are promised.
