There are plenty of automotive phenomena we don't entirely understand. Take sound system competitions, for example. We just never saw the practical use for a stereo worth more than your vehicle, especially when the largest fraction of that investment gets channeled into bowel-wobbling subwoofers. That is, until now. The owner of this particular Pontiac Grand Prix has found a unique way to shed snow from his car in the winter. Instead of standing in the cold with a brush and scraper, he simply cranks the volume on his Rockford Fosgate P3 subwoofers and lets physics take over.

Thanks to a little pounding bass, the vehicle's windows are clear of snow in no time flat. Of course, the gentleman's neighbors might have a word or two to say about his turning the community's winter wonderland into a pounding dance floor. Hit the jump to check out the clip for yourself, just be sure to nix the volume.
Continue reading The other way to get snow off your car

The other way to get snow off your car originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 16:59:00 EST.
Chevrolet S-10 Boom Truck - Click above to watch video after the jump

There are sound systems, and then there are walls of speakers capable of melting cinder blocks and turning your average Chevrolet S10 pickup into a buzzing, trembling box of terror. The audio setup in the video after the jump falls safely in that latter category. A group of devoted bass enthusiasts have managed to turn an unsuspecting lowered S-10 into a carrier of audio assault. Fortunately, all involved seem to only use the vehicle's power for good. You know, things like rattling windows, setting off car alarms and engineering Tina Turner-like hairstyles on cute girls with nothing but the sheer might of sound waves.

It's plenty impressive (if utterly pointless), but it might just be one of the better uses left for a 1999 S-10. Still, we've got to wonder exactly how long the vehicle can withstand that kind of vibration before the vehicle's sheets of glass and trim give up for good (just witness how the Bowtie's trim tries to rearrange itself or flee in the beginning of the video). Supposedly, the wall of speakers is tuned to 28 hertz for maximum punch. Hit the jump to have a look for yourself.
Bang & Olufsen worked with product developers at Aston Martin to create the BeoSound DBS audio system that is specifically tuned to 007's cabin. Thirteen speakers -- five tweeters, five midrange, and three woofers -- are located in ten places around the cabin. Of course a sound system for the DBS is not just about sound -- it is just as much about looks. Two of the tweeters are mounted on the dash and ascend when the car is started. Loudspeaker grilles are finished in contoured aluminum. And all that hardware is controlled by B&O's Digital Signal Processing system that is matched the DBS interior and adjusts to changing acoustic conditions. All of this means you'll be able to hear the next Bond theme song, "Another Way to Die," like never before...

[Source: Aston Martin]
Aston Martin gets the Bang & Olufsen treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Sep 2008 17:31:00 EST.
