For those hoping the next iteration of Polyphony Digital's storied 15-year-old Gran Turismo franchise would take full advantage of the Sony Playstation 4, sorry, but we're going to burst your bubble. The next-gen console is slated to debut this holiday season, and while Sony officially announced today that Gran Turismo 6 would be released at the same time, it will be for the seven-year-old Playstation 3 console, not the new PS4. But hey, at least we won't have to have waited five years for this version like we did for the fifth.

GT6 will launch with a roster of 1,200 cars, 33 locations (seven more than GT5) and 71 track layouts. The racing simulator is also said to utilize new game and physics engines, which Sony claims "pushes the limits of the PS3." Today's announcement was made at the well-known Silverstone racing circuit in the UK, which is one of the new tracks in GT6. A demo version of the game with 19 cars (see the full list below and view them in the related gallery) will be released before the holiday season; Sony says it's scheduled for July and will kick off GT Academy 2013.

We'll see more of Gran Turismo 6 at the E3 games show in June, but for now you can watch the trailer below for what has become the Playstation 3's best-selling franchise with 70 million copies sold. This sixth iteration will likely lock down that honor for good.
Continue reading Gran Turismo 6 confirmed for holiday 2013 release on PS3

Gran Turismo 6 confirmed for holiday 2013 release on PS3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 May 2013 14:58:00 EST.
Sony held a big event last night where many thought it would debut its next-next-next-gen console system, the Playstation 4. As it turns out, Sony both did and didn't debut the PS4, choosing to keep the console's design a secret for now while premiering the new controller's look, a new Kinect-like camera peripheral and the machine's basic hardware specs.

The other thing that got a lot of attention were games, one of which previewed during the event was DriveClub, a new racing game franchise by Evolution Studios that will launch with the PS4 this holiday season. The studios prior highlights include developing World Rally Championship games for the PS2 and Motorstorm for the PS3. The teaser vid for DriveClub can be watched below, and while it looks darn good, these sorts of vids aren't always accurate representations of what the actual gameplay graphics will look like.

From what we've heard and can tell from the video, DriveClub will look and work just like the other major racing game franchises, namely the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport series. It's reported, however, that DriveClub will be able to support hundreds of drivers and that it's graphical detail goes down to a car's "microscopic" flecks of paint.

As for the cars that will be included, we see a number of vehicles in the teaser video, including the Hennessey Venom GT, BAC Mono and Pagani Huayra, among others. Mercedes-Benz has even issued a press release announcing that the CLA45 AMG and A45 AMG will be in the game and included the first official shot of the former done up in the game's photorealistic graphics.

So what say you Playstation users? Does DriveClub look like it can give the grand-daddy of next-gen racing games, Gran Turismo, a run for its money on Sony's console?
Continue reading Sony unveils new DriveClub racing game franchise for PS4

Sony unveils new DriveClub racing game franchise for PS4 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Feb 2013 16:57:00 EST.
Some of the protagonists placed on the tiny battlefield of action sports cameras are the JVC Adixxion, Sony Action Cam, Ion Air Pro, Contour +2 and GoPro Hero3 HD. The first three are in their infancy, the Contour recently upgraded to next-gen status and the big-daddy Hero3 about to ship as a third generation, specs-busting model.

Also just refreshed is the $400 Drift HD Ghost, bettering the previous version by the addition of a new seven-element lens covered by Gorilla Glass 2 and built-in Wi-Fi that, with a coming DriftMobile app, lets you control the camera with your phone. Its two-way remote - that works from 30 feet away - has an LED that lets you know when the camera is recording, the illumination color-coded to indicate the mode: video, photo, time-lapse or photo burst. There's also a feature called Flashback, which captures footage to memory in five-minute chunks; if you hadn't hit record but want something the camera caught in the last five minutes, you can save the footage. It also has a built-in two-inch LCD screen and is waterproof to nine feet.

The Ghost will do 1080p, 960p, 720p and WVGA, the 1080p frame rates in either 25 or 30 fps, 720p going up to 60 fps. But specs without footage don't mean much, so you'll find some video samples below. Make sure you turn up the quality.
Continue reading Drift HD Ghost camera ready to bring the fight to GoPro [w/video]

Drift HD Ghost camera ready to bring the fight to GoPro [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2012 19:02:00 EST.
Sony's Crackle has released the second, and much longer, promo for Jerry Seinfeld's upcoming web show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Contrary to the placement of the word "cars" in the title and the first car-centric promo, this trailer suggests are appears only incidentally related to the program; this looks much more like comedians hanging out and chatting in coffee shops, and they needed a better method of transportation than buses or donkeys.

There will undoubtedly be some car talk, and we won't complain about whatever we'll get since it will probably center around samples from Seinfeld's excellent collection. We really just hope the show is funny, and while the promo below has promise, it looks like we'll have to wait for the show itself to see about that.
Continue reading Seinfeld's Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee long promo released

Seinfeld's Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee long promo released originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jul 2012 14:57:00 EST.
Of the more than 52,000 contestants who originally entered into the United States version of GT Academy, jointly hosted by Nissan and Sony, just 16 have advanced to the final competition being held in Silverstone in the United Kingdom. The top 32 virtual racers from the four U.S. regions descended on Orlando, Florida this week to go pixel-to-pixel for a spot among the sweet 16. But this is about more than just bragging rights. Those that made it into the final round will face a battery of new challenges, including physical fitness tests and evaluations behind the wheel of real-live race cars.

The top winner will have a shot at becoming a professional race car driver by joining a legitimate team, just like GT Academy Europe winner Lucas Ordonez. As you may recall, Ordonez and his team managed to finish second at the 12 Hours of Sebring with a Signatech Nissan LMP2 racer, and the 25-year-old Spaniard is headed to this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans for a shot at taking home the checkers at one of the world's most grueling race events.

Nissan and Sony are currently working up a reality TV show about the GT Academy's U.S. contestants. While the winner will be chosen after the throwdown in Sivlerstone this summer, look for the show to hit the airwaves this fall. Hit the jump for the full list of final contestants.

If you've been feeling slighted by the fact that the top three contenders in Polyphony Digital's GT Academy are cheating curs, don't sweat it. Sony has announced that round two of the Gran Turismo 5 challenge won't count. Instead, everyone who participated in round two will also be able to give it a go in round three. The company says that its already hard at work on a way to prevent gamers from cutting the same corners in the Rome and Madrid circuits that allowed the contentious lap times in the first place.

The news is welcome for anyone who feared that Sony might pull the plug on the competition all together. There is a downside, though. The next round of the GT Academy has been permanently postponed until this whole mess can be properly sorted, and Polyphony hasn't said when we can expect a patch to fix the gamers' cheating ways. Stay tuned.
Some diehard fans are so excited that it's here, they may not care about the obvious issues the game has at launch. On the other end of the spectrum, some folks are quick to deride the racing sim as being terrible when that's far from true. The reality is that Gran Turismo 5 falls somewhere in between these two extreme points of view. It is pretty amazing, while its flaws are clearly visible. Creator Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that fixes are planned, and should arrive by early December.

What exactly do these fixes include? Mechanical damage will be added to the existing cosmetic damage, the "blocky shadows" will be resolved, online functionality will be increased and the ability to disable the HUD is mentioned as a possible option.

Whatever your gripes with the game may be, it's nice to hear that Polyphony Digital is listening. The ability to implement fixes and dole them out by way of a download is a far cry better from the old days of waiting for the next generation game.
1,000 cars. Hundreds of events. 71 track variations. Six years in development. There are lots of numbers to throw around and lots of numbers behind the latest release of Gran Turismo, the version that fans of the franchise have been aching for while suffering through delay after delay. Gran Turismo 5 is finally here, and in plenty of ways it's the best installment that the storied franchise has seen to date.

However, it's also the least polished release, least complete feeling and seemingly the buggiest - yes, even worse than the infamously rushed Gran Turismo 2. It's a frustrating mix of amazing content and glaring shortcomings that will leave even the most devout GT fanboys and girls with mixed feelings. But, of course, the full story is rather more complicated than that. So let's get to it...

As of right now, we're a little more than a week away from the latest official release date for Gran Turismo 5. Thanks to the ridiculous frequency of delays, we aren't exactly betting on having the game in our hands on November 24. But if, like us, you've been confounded by the repeated launch setbacks, you'll likely find this latest video intriguing. Apparently one of the biggest reasons the game has been pushed back is the addition of a new course creator that allows players to generate their own tracks.

That means that with a little patience, you can cook up just about any combination of turns, elevation changes and the like, and then share them with friends. Something tells us we're going to be working on getting Virginia International Raceway down pat for awhile. Hit the jump to see the clip for yourself.
We're still anxiously waiting for Sony and Polyphony Digital to yank the Gran Turismo 5 rug out from under us one more time. We know that the game is due out on November 24, but the dynamic duo of delays have cried wolf so many times before, we can't help but be jaded. Still, Sony has just turned out a new commercial for the game, complete with the company's "VP of More Awesome," Kevin Butler.

The sight of a full-fledged ad campaign does a good bit to assuage our worries about another delay. After all, Sony wouldn't go through the trouble of actually airing something like this if it were just going to burn us again, right? Right?

The clever marketing ploy pitted European Gran Turismo fans against one another for a chance to hop behind the wheel of a real-life Nissan 350Z race car. Now it looks like American gamers will get the same chance. Nissan has announced that Sony is firing up the GT Academy in our neck of the woods. Racers will campaign various Nissan hardware in time trials, unlocking free content as they race.

Finally, the top 32 racers will compete live for just 16 slots in the finals. Those 16 gamers will go lock horns in a variety of competitions, including ones that involve hot-shoeing genuine Nissan 370Z and GT-R race cars around a track. Finally, the winner will have a chance to train with professional drivers and race as part of a professional team. Hit the jump to watch a video and for the full press release.

Polyphony's Gran Turismo games tread the line between fantasy and reality with the balance of a trapeze artist. Not only are the games themselves a close approximation of reality, but once in a while, reality jumps out of the digital world and into the tangible.

A couple of years ago the game's creators worked with the French automaker to give birth to the GTbyCitroën - a supercar designed specifically for the game. But then they made it into a concept car and put it on display. And while it never came to be, they even considered a limited production run.

The latest collaboration brought the recently-crowned world champion Red Bull Racing team on board for the X1 prototype. Again, an extreme high-performance vehicle designed specifically for the game - this time a vision of what an F1 car could be if not for all the pesky regulations. Initial reports that the car is powered by a turbine engine are now being corrected to an F1-derived, direct-injection, twin-turbo V6. Fortunately, the 1483-horsepower output remains.

Actually building the X1 into a functioning track car would be a little pointless and undoubtedly extremely expensive, but they have made a full-size mock-up that will be unveiled during the game's launch party, scheduled (don't hold your breath) for Madrid in a few weeks' time. Here's hoping GT5 can follow that same fantasy-to-reality trajectory and land in our hands on (the revised and revised again) schedule.

Few driving games have the kind of cult following of Gran Turismo. But though less than two years separated the release of the original to the first sequel, and from that to Gran Turismo 3, it took four years for Polyphony to follow up with Gran Turismo 4. Still, that's nothing compared to the wait we've been forced to endure to Gran Turismo 5.

Quite possibly the most highly-anticipated driving game ever released, we've been waiting on it for years, with only a couple of updates (like the PS3-ized GT4 HD and the GT5 Prologue) and a constant stream of conjecture to keep us interested in the meantime. Sony and Polyphony swear it'll be here any day now, but while we grow tired of keeping our fingers crossed, reports are already looking further down the road.

That's right, while GT5 isn't even out the door yet, reports are emerging on the development of GT6. Speaking with Kazunori Yamauchi - the driving force behind the franchise pictured above - AutoWeek asked if work had already begun on the sixth installment. Yamauchi confirmed that they're working on it, but would say no more. All we can say is that it likely won't be here for some time to come, and who knows what cars will even look like by then.

Anyone looking forward to buying Gran Turismo 5 when it launches on November 2nd? Why don't you have a seat for a minute, we have some bad news. Sony's Playstation Blog just posted an announcement that the game is getting pushed back yet again. The statement does say that the game will be released this holiday season, but does not elaborate more than that. Here's the text:

We can confirm that Gran Turismo 5 will not be available this November 2nd, but the game's release will be coming this holiday season.

We sincerely apologize to GT fans for the delay, however, creator Kazunori Yamauchi and the team at Polyphony Digital want to make certain they are creating the perfect racing experience, and we are confident that this ambitious game will exceed expectations when it launches.

We keep getting excited only to continually have the rug pulled out from underneath us. The cars, tracks, damage feature, Top Gear goodies and numerous extras leave us waiting with baited breath. We've waited this long so we can wait a little longer.

But not much longer...

We'd heard that Polyphony had the rights to in-game representations of the Top Gear test track, and here we have the evidence in moving images. In the next installment of Gran Turismo 5, said to be let loose in November in 3D (we'll wait while you grab that grain of salt), you'll be able to do everything the Stig can do, with all the cars in which he does it. Except, most likely, you won't go anywhere near as fast. Follow the jump for the video, and get those 3D goggles ordered already! Thanks to David for the tip

The wait is nearly over. The game we all had nearly given up hope on is now less than five months away. Gran Turismo 5 is a reality, a playable reality, and Sony is making a big enough deal about its November 2 launch date to make us think that, for once, it might actually happen. The version at this year's E3 is by far the most polished version of this game we've yet seen -- and we've seen quite a few over the years.

That it still isn't finished (no full crash damage in the version we played) and that there are still a number of questions to be answered (details for online play, what sort of driver training will be included, etc.) leaves us a bit leery, but we certainly didn't pass up the opportunity to take it for a spin just the same. We were also given the opportunity to speak with series producer Kazunori Yamauchi to get his thoughts on the game -- and to chat about his recent real-world racing exploits. Keep on reading for our detailed impressions of the game, and some video of some good 'ol boys banging fenders around the Top Gear Test Track.

Now that we have an official launch date for Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5, it's hard to contain our anticipation. It doesn't help that the company keeps teasing us with new trailers for the game, each showing some new bit of detail that we hadn't foreseen or been previously able to confirm. The latest spot features a little voiceover action from none other than Sebastian Vettel. It's hard to tell exactly what part the Formula One guru will play in the game, and our imaginations are running wild as a result.

The new trailer also gives us a glimpse at three of the most hotly talked about features of the game - damage rendering, night races and the Top Gear test track. There's even a cameo by The Stig himself. Some say he lacks opposable thumbs and controls joysticks through a series of ultra high-frequency squeals. All we know is, he's in Gran Turismo 5, and we can't wait to get our greedy little paws on the game. We've never been so excited for November 2. Take a peek past the jump to see the video.

Sony and Polyphony Digital have become a dynamic duo of boys crying wolf when it comes to the holy grail of driving simulators - Gran Turismo 5. We've been infuriated by repeated blown launch dates, faux teasers and rumored content so many times that we've nearly lost all interest in what was once one of our favorite ways to blow a few hours in front of a console. Nearly. Word has just come down from E3 that the game will launch on November 2, 2010, and that not only will it pack all of the standard tracks and cars we've come to expect, but the game will be playable in 3D. Get your paper spectacles, kids.

The news came along with a new trailer for the game, and the quick spot's got us crawling back like the kicked puppies we are. We'd be lying if we weren't placing our pre-orders as you read this. Hit the jump to see the action for yourself, complete with damage rendering, fender-to-fender ally action and plenty of the most drool-worthy race metal on the digital planet.

Before we say anything at all about the Sony RDP-NWV500 speaker system, please allow us to get this sentiment off our collective chests: Why? There are precious few automobiles on the road these days featuring sound systems that lack the ability to attach a portable MP3 player, and even if your current car doesn't have one, you could always just get an integrated replacement unit that does.

With that established, let's take an look at Sony's utterly mystifying new cupholder speaker system. It boasts 16 watts of power and reportedly pumps out 360-degree sound from its 56-mm woofer and 20-mm tweeter. The unit is designed to fit into a standard cupholder and draws its power from your car's 12-volt accessory socket.

Of course, if you do choose to go the route of the Sony Sound Mug, you could always remove your car's stereo system entirely and add a bunch more cupholders. Click past the break for a video plus one more image.

Perhaps Polyphony Digital should just go into the commercial rendering business. Gran Turismo 5 remains stuck behind a palisade of silence, but new trailers for the game are thrown over the barriers to the salivating hordes every couple of weeks.

A few days ago, Polyphony laid out a NASCAR feast, while this latest, called "Nights," is a potluck dinner with regular gameplay, sports car racing, pit stops, NASCAR, night racing and damage scenes. Plus, a lot of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. And music from Ibiza. Follow the jump to sample the newest dish.

[Source: Joystiq]
Continue reading Video: Gran Turismo 5 "Nights" trailer has it all

Video: Gran Turismo 5 "Nights" trailer has it all originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 12:33:00 EST.
