Proving that there's a first time for everything, 79-year-old racing legend Bob Bondurant recently jumped behind the wheel of one of his popular driving school's Chevrolet Sonic LTZ hatchbacks for a bit of drifting. But wait, how does someone drift a turbocharged front-wheel drive subcompact? Just like high schoolers have been doing for years: Lunch trays.

With a slick plastic lunch tray wedged beneath each rear tire and the parking brake locked, the five-door behaves as if its tail is on ice. This allows the Le Mans-winner-turned-driving-school-titan to toss the Chevrolet around (albeit rather slowly) and enjoy some sweet Sonic oversteer. Of course it's silly... but Bob sure looks like he's having fun.

If you are interested in owning one of the mangled and charred trays, signed by the legend himself, check out this eBay auction after watching the video below.
Continue reading Watch 79-year-old Bob Bondurant learn how to drift on lunch trays

Watch 79-year-old Bob Bondurant learn how to drift on lunch trays originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 19:29:00 EST.
Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" tagline has finally been run into the ground, replaced with the Bowtie brand's "Find New Roads" slogan that's part of parent General Motors' plan to unify its everyday brand's marketing efforts worldwide. The new Chevrolet campaign was ushered in on prime time last night during the Grammy Awards on CBS, and the first spot, a 90-second full-line ad, also marks the first appearance of the 2014 Corvette Stingray in a commercial.

Being a full-line ad, the commercial is composed of vignettes centered on different vehicles in the brand's lineup. The all-new 2014 Impala also makes its first commercial appearance in dapper fashion, and time is spent on a skateboarding Sonic and a bouquet of brightly colored Spark hatchbacks driven by fashionable women. The ad starts and ends with Chevy's green halo car, the Volt, along with a young girl with her robotic dog (yes, really).

Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" campaign got off to a rocky start in the fall of 2010, but it did last for a couple of years with some tweaks. This new one, "Find New Roads" seems more intent on drawing new customers into the fold than the outgoing tagline, which seemed to play more toward the brand faithful. It admittedly reminds us more than a little the short-lived "Find Your Own Road" Saab motto (which, we note, was conceived while the Swedish brand was under GM's control), but no matter, we still think it's got more long-term potential than "Runs Deep."

Four different General Motors vehicles from the 2012 model year are being recalled over a potential airbag issue. The driver's side airbag shorting bar in the 2012 Buick Verano and 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze and Sonic might make contact with the airbag terminals, even during a crash. If so, the airbag won't deploy when it should, possibly increasing injury to the driver.

The recall is expected to begin on February 13 for the 3,896 units that might be affected. GM will notify owners who can then take their vehicles to dealers to have the airbag coil replaced. A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below has more info.
Continue reading GM recalling nearly 4,000 vehicles over airbag concerns

GM recalling nearly 4,000 vehicles over airbag concerns originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 13:31:00 EST.
We're piecing this together as best we can from the original Japanese with the help of Google Translate, but it seems Chevrolet is headed to the Tokyo Auto Salon with three special vehicles. Embracing the customization of American metal through the themes of cool, fun and freedom, the showpiece will be a Camaro Giovanna Edition but there's no information on it. Based on its name, though, we would not be shocked if it's fitted with Giovanna aftermarket wheels.

It will be joined by the Chevrolet Captiva Freedom Rider in Carbon Flash Metallic hue and the Chevrolet Sonic Street Icon Package in red. The "stylish and playful" Sonic is all about skateboarders and "the street generation," while the Captiva works the two-wheeled crowd with its Thule bike rack and painted-to-match bicycle.

The Salon goes down from January 11-13. We'll be looking forward to that Camaro and to see whether that Captiva grille really is as meshtastic as it looks in the above picture.
Chevrolet headed to Tokyo Auto Salon with Sonic, Captiva concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Jan 2013 13:31:00 EST.
Get ready for Siri in your car. Early in 2013, Chevrolet will be the first automaker to roll out Apple's Eyes Free technology, showing up initially in the Spark (in 1LT and 2LT trims) and Sonic (in LTZ and RS versions). Both models also come with six months of OnStar service included for free, which also includes a smartphone app - available for Android, iOS or Blackberry.

Here's what Siri in your Chevy Spark or Sonic can do:

Make voice-activated, hands-free calls to Contacts on your iPhone

Play songs in the iTunes library, and even switch music sources automatically from AM/FM/XM radio to iPod mode

Listen to, compose and send an iMessage or text message to a phone number or anyone in saved Contacts

 Access Calendar and add appointments

Minimize distraction by keeping the screen of the iPhone from lighting up, even when Siri answers simple questions, such as game scores or the dates of national holidays

While in Eyes Free mode, Siri will not provide answers to complex questions that require displaying a web page.

Owners will need a compatible iPhone (4S or 5, running iOS6) to use Siri Eyes Free, connected through Bluetooth to Chevy's MyLink infotainment system.

Speaking of which, Chevrolet has also announced that the next generation of its MyLink technology (see the image to the right) will debut with the 2014 Impala. Later in the year it will also show up in GM's new full-size trucks and SUVs and the Corvette.

There are all kinds of new features in the next-gen MyLink, but one headliner is Chevy's first use of natural voice recognition. There will also be four optional graphic treatments to choose from, large icons on the touch screen plus a set of old-fashioned knobs and steering wheel controls.

General Motors is recalling certain 2012 Buick Verano, Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic models due to a defect in the driver's airbag system. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the airbag has a shorting bar which may contact two internal terminals. If that happens during a crash, the supplemental restraint may not deploy, increasing the risk of driver injury. The recall includes a total of 2,949 units.

GM will contact owners and replace the steering wheel airbag coil at no cost. At this point, it's unclear when the recall will begin, though owners may contact the automaker at 1-800-521-7300 for more information.
Chevrolet Performance worked over the Chevrolet Sonic just for this year's SEMA show to create this B-Spec racecar concept. Built to conform to all of rules and regulations of the B-Spec subcompact classes in both the SCCA and the Grand-Am series, the five-door features new coilovers on all four corners with revised mounts, adjustable front stabilizer bar links and a rear axle shim kit. The requisite air inlet restrictor has also been shoved in place, and the ECM and EBCM have been recalibrated accordingly. That's exciting in all, but we're more thrilled about the fact that Chevrolet says the parts are intended for production as a kit any consumer can buy.

That would leave competitors to independently source pricey pieces like the roll cage, seat and associated harnesses. The automaker says some of the parts may change en route to production, including the lightweight 15-inch alloy wheels.

Underhood, buyers can expect to find a stock 1.8-liter four-cylinder mated to a factory five-speed manual gearbox. Look for the production kit to go on sale in the first quarter of 2013. Check the full press blast below for more information.
Continue reading Chevrolet builds Sonic B-Spec racer concept

Chevrolet builds Sonic B-Spec racer concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 15:40:00 EST.
In all the talk of the zombie apocalypse, there's been little discussion of how the undead are going to provide music for their election rallies and beachfront luaus. We can't be sure since we hardly know anything about it, but the Chevrolet Spark prepared by Enemy to Fashion for SEMA could be the answer.

Completely reskineed, re-interiored and barred up and braced for collisions, the "modern tactical vehicle" at first looks all Def-Con 5. The company's press release says it has "paid as much attention to the tactical experience as it has to the design aesthetic," but look a little closer and you'll see the roof is home to a lot of less-than-tactical speakers. We're going to guess it's so the last living DJ can ply his trade without getting eaten, but we'll know more when we see it at SEMA this week.

In the meantime there's a press release below and a whole lotta high-res shots above.
Continue reading Enemy To Fashion imagines what Chevy Spark would look like as an army vehicle

Enemy To Fashion imagines what Chevy Spark would look like as an army vehicle originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 07:30:00 EST.
The SEMA show in Las Vegas has become a place to see some of the most outrageous concept and custom cars imaginable (where else can you see anything like Toyota Sequoia Family Dragster?). But amidst all of the outrageousness, there are usually a handful of sober, production-intent models that show up as well. Such is the case with the Chevrolet Sonic Dusk sedan that General Motors is revealing today. The Dusk started life as one of many Sonic concepts on display in Vegas last year, and the new trim will show up at Chevrolet dealerships in 2014, bringing an upscale vibe to the subcompact's sedan range.

Setting this Sonic apart from lesser models, the Dusk will come exclusively in a Ashen Grey hue while the rest of the sedan's appearance is spruced up with matte finished trim on the grille, door handles and rear decklid in addition to stainless steel trim used for the lower window moldings. The Sonic Dusk will also receive a slick set of wheels that feature the same design as the Chevrolet Camaro Dusk that was first introduced at the 2009 SEMA Show (a car that went on sale earlier this summer). This Sonic also packs a stylish black-and-tan interior - including black leather seats with tan inserts and suede accents - and Chevy's MyLink infotainment system as standard fit. Like other upper-level Sonic models, the Dusk will be powered by Chevy's 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

There's no word yet on pricing, but we definitely expect it to be priced well above the current luxury trim level, the Sonic LTZ ($18,640), and possibly closer to the sporty Sonic RS hatchback ($20,995).
Small cars are going to be well represented at the 2012 SEMA Show from numerous automakers, but Chevrolet just released eight Vegas-bound concepts that we'll be able to see next week. While the Cruze, Sonic and Spark have all helped bolster Chevy's small-car cred, the Malibu has helped the automaker compete in the family-friendly midsize class, and now the Bowtie brand is looking to show some of the customization potential for all of these popular cars.

Perhaps one of the most eye-catching concepts that Chevy has teased so far, the Malibu Turbo Performance Concept might focus more on styling than power, but it still shows how cool the new Malibu can look. Some of the concept's features include a sporty-looking body kit, clear-lensed LED taillights, rear spoiler and a stunning set of 20-inch wheels. Although it keeps the same 259-horsepower turbo engine under the hood, it does add a few bits that could help the car's performance with upgraded suspension and brakes and a cold-air intake system.

Taking this Malibu Concept's aggressive styling and scaling it down quite a bit, the Spark Sinister concept also shows how far the car's design can be taken. Once you get past the car's color scheme and excessive use of Chevy bowties, the Spark Sinister still has a nasty look to it with its sporty front fascia, 18-inch wheels, funky side sill add-ons and a massive rear wing. Chevy will also have a couple other Sparks on display such as "The Color Run" Spark which is the official pace car of The Color Run (a unique 5K where participants get covered in various colors after each kilometer) and the "Pink Out" Spark Cancer Awareness Concept bringing more attention to the fight against breast cancer.

Chevy will also have the Cruze Upscale at SEMA which will focus on an interior decked-out in leather but will also have some performance enhancements such as the adjustable coil-over suspension and upgraded brakes. Even the Sonic will get into the SEMA frenzy with a few different Z-Spec concepts to show just how far this small car can be tricked out.

Not to be left out, Chevy will also be unveiling concept versions of the rest of its car lineup including the Camaro, Corvette and the new 2014 Impala. The Impala concept is simply a flashier version of the production car that goes on sale early next year with a red paint job, 20-inch wheels and black ice chrome accents on the inside; Chevy is keeping the Camaro and Corvette SEMA concepts a secret until the show.
Continue reading Chevy cars highlight GM's fleet of custom SEMA concepts

Chevy cars highlight GM's fleet of custom SEMA concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 10:45:00 EST.

After spending a week with the Chevrolet Sonic LTZ five-door, and realizing how much better it was than its Aveo predecessor, we were excited to get behind the wheel of the all-new 2013 Sonic RS - the gussied-up hatchback seemed to smartly address all of the standard model's minor shortcomings of appearance and driving dynamics.

To test our assumptions in the flesh, we braved a crowded airport and jetted to San Francisco to spend the better part of an afternoon with the impressive Chevrolet B-segment five-door.

The hour-long flight gave us plenty of time to do our homework, pore over its specifications and set realistic expectations based on its price and performance. When it arrives later this year, it will have a base price of $20,995, meaning it will compete with loaded versions of the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent. More importantly, Chevrolet's RS (Rally Sport) badge means it gains an appearance package with minor mechanical upgrades - thus it should not to be lumped into the hot hatch category with more focused adversaries (we'd have to see an "SS" badge and hardware for that to happen).

Armed with the insight, we eagerly jumped behind the wheel of a bright-red RS and zipped around real estate north of the Bay Area for a few hours.

We arrived. We drove. We enjoyed.
Continue reading 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS [w/video]

2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Oct 2012 11:57:00 EST.
For the second time in about a month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall on the Chevrolet Sonic. Last month, around 44,000 2012 Sonics were recalled for a leaky windshield washer reservoir hose, and now over 4,700 owners of the 2013 Sonic can expect to receive a recall notice.

This time around, NHTSA says that certain Sonics built between May 29 and August 29 exhibit a condition where the car's turn signals don't operate properly, meaning the car does not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard regulations. Like the previous recall on the Sonic, this one has a relatively easy fix that requires the body control module and the key fobs to be reprogrammed.

General Motors will start notifying owners next week, but for more information, check out NTHSA's press release below.
Continue reading Chevy recalling over 4,700 Sonic subcompacts over faulty turn signals

Chevy recalling over 4,700 Sonic subcompacts over faulty turn signals originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 09:30:00 EST.
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic has been found to suffer from a windshield wiper washer issue: 44,668 examples of the subcompact could have wiper washer hoses that separate from the fluid reservoir. If that happens, drivers won't be able use the washer system to clean the windshield.

The official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall notice indicates that General Motors will begin notifying owners around September 7, after which time owners can take their cars to their dealers for repair free of charge. The full notice from NHTSA, along with the number for the Chevrolet owner center, is posted below.
Continue reading Chevy recalls over 44,000 Sonic models over windshield washer issue

Chevy recalls over 44,000 Sonic models over windshield washer issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 10:29:00 EST.
Chevrolet has just released pricing on its 2013 Sonic RS sporty hatchback. The edgy five door, with its turbocharged powerplant will start at $20,995 (*including destination charges) for the six-speed manual model. Those desiring a six-speed automatic will have to scrape up $22,280.

The RS sets itself apart from the rest of the Sonic lineup with a model-specific grille, revised front fascia and rear spoiler. Other kit includes unique RS badging, 17-inch five spoke wheels, a bit of exhaust tip brightwork.

Mechanically, the RS features GM's 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant. Just as it does in lesser Sonic models, the Ecotec sends 138 horsepower and 148 pound feet of torque to the front wheels. The ratios on the six-speed manual are RS-specific however, which Chevy says gives the model sportier acceleration. The RS is the only model in the Sonic lineup to feature four-wheel disc brakes and the suspension is lowered 10 millimeters and fitted with firmer dampers.

Inside, the RS receives leather bucket seats with RS inserts, a leather wrapped sport steering wheel with red stitching, and unique instrument panel graphics. The RS also comes standard with Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system.

Production of the Orion, Michigan-built Sonic RS begins in October, and the model will hit dealerships later this fall. Click below to check out the press release and receive a video tour of the Sonic RS inside and out from lead development engineer John Buttermore.
Continue reading Chevrolet prices 2013 Sonic RS from $20,995* [w/video]

Chevrolet prices 2013 Sonic RS from $20,995* [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 11:31:00 EST.
How many people can you fit into a car? It's a question that's been asked about any number of small cars. They're usually Volkswagen models, and those determined to find the answer are most likely to be a group of relatively small and flexible individuals. But Chevrolet has taken a different approach.

The American automaker's British division wants to know how many rugby players can fit inside a new Aveo - one of its smallest vehicles, also known as the Sonic on this side of the Mayflower's journey. But rather than answer the question itself, it has launched a competition across the UK. With the rugby season about to kick off, whichever team fits the most of its players into an Aveo by the end of the year will win a whole mess of new equipment.

Our money's on the local grade school's team. Check out the press release below for more.
Continue reading How many rugby players can you fit into a Chevrolet Aveo?

How many rugby players can you fit into a Chevrolet Aveo? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 May 2012 08:27:00 EST.
Oh, how we'd like to go all grumpy-old-man-get-off-my-lawn on Chevrolet for this latest bit of hipster marketing. But dammit, it's got robots in it. Real robots, industrial robots, installed inside a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic hatchback. And it's just so cool.

The robots are there to help Jeff Soto paint a mural on an empty brick wall, and while we're pretty sure the final product of this collaboration is still something like 90-percent man and 10-percent machine, we really like what we see. Chevy calls Soto a "respected street artist," which we figure just means a graffiti artist with a degree rather than a rap sheet. (Soto's is from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.) Soto, in turn, refers to the compact Sonic as the first "robotic art car."

While Soto did a lot of conventional work on the mural, he also used the Sonic's robotic arms, which were controlled from within the car and could be operated while Soto drove. The painting appendages emerged through the Sonic's windows, sunroof and hatchback, and seem to take up all the available space inside the car, save for the driver's seat.

While we were fairly impressed seeing the Sonic play indie rock, we definitely think the little car should focus on its art. There's some real talent there.
Continue reading Watch an assembly line robot try its hand at street art

Watch an assembly line robot try its hand at street art originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 19:00:00 EST.
We're already familiar with the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system that's slowly making its way across the brand's entire portfolio, but today, we were able to get our first look at the next big feature being added to General Motors' Bowtie tech. First available on the 2013 Chevrolet Spark and Sonic, GogoLink is a smartphone-based app that works with the car's touch-screen display to provide a fully functional navigation feature to the MyLink system.

We spent some time with Sara LeBlanc, GM's program manager for global infotainment systems, who showed us exactly how the GogoLink app works. When your smartphone is tethered to the car, the app can be launched from the MyLink interface and works just like any other high-quality navigation system. GogoLink includes things like points of interest, 3D mapping, emergency information (police, fire, etc.), local search via Google and live traffic details. Disconnect your phone from the car, and your maps and routes are available right on your phone. (Note: Even though that last part doesn't show up in the video, trust us, it works.)

Pricing for the GogoLink app has not been announced as of this writing, and will be confirmed closer to the system's on-sale date this fall. The 2013 Spark will go on sale before the GogoLink app is available, so the first round of Sparks will require a simple MyLink upgrade that can be installed for free at Chevy dealers.

Now, take a closer look at the MyLink head unit in the video below - there's no CD player. LeBlanc provided this explanation for us:

We talked to our Sonic and Spark customers and we asked them about the features they were looking for. They wanted connectivity. They said, "We have all that music on our smartphone, can't you just find a way to transfer it? We don't want CDs. We don't use that."

Of course, LeBlanc assures us that this is only for the Sonic and Spark MyLink system right now. The rest of the Chevrolet products will continue to be offered with CD players.

The MyLink system with GogoLink arrives this fall, and pricing has yet to be announced as of this writing. Follow the jump for a tour of the new system, as well as the official release from GM.
Continue reading Chevy adding navigation to Sonic, Spark with GogoLink smartphone app

Chevy adding navigation to Sonic, Spark with GogoLink smartphone app originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 19:28:00 EST.
Consumer Reports has just wrapped up an evaluation of subcompact sedans, and the Kia Rio EX has rolled out ahead of the class. The four-door beat out its corporate clone, the Hyundai Accent and the Chevrolet Sonic to take the top spot. Evaluators pointed to the sharp handling and well-optioned interior in the Rio as reasons for the vehicle's win. The newly redesigned Nissan Versa and unloved Toyota Yaris filled out the top five sedans. And what of the baby hatchbacks? CR once again credited the Honda Fit as leader of the pack, followed closely by the Versa Hatchback and Rio Hatchback.

The organization found fault with the base Chevrolet Sonic's fuel economy, and found the turbocharged LTZ model to be too expensive. Evaluators also felt the Sonic Turbo "didn't live up to its sporty aspirations."

We'll politely agree to disagree on that one.

All of the vehicles in the evaluation are either too new or scored too low in CR evaluations to earn a coveted Recommended rating. Hit the jump for a look at the full press release and debate amongst yourselves in Comments.
Continue reading Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent and Chevy Sonic top Consumer Reports subcompact shootout

Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent and Chevy Sonic top Consumer Reports subcompact shootout originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 14:58:00 EST.
In an effort to appeal to a much wider range of shoppers, Chevrolet has announced that its turbocharged Sonic models will now be available with a six-speed automatic transmission. Up until now, manual-averse customers were stuck with the 1.8-liter naturally aspirated inline-four - by our opinion, the worse of the two engines offered in the Sonic.

Under the hood of the Sonic, Chevrolet's 1.4-liter turbo-four is good for 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. That's seriously good power for the 2,700-pound subcompact, especially when you consider that when paired with the manual 'box, the Sonic carries EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 29/40 miles per gallon (city/highway). Of course, adding the automatic transmission reduces that economy, though the slushbox Sonic is still rated at a respectable 27/37 mpg.

The automatic Sonic Turbo is on sale now. LT models start at $16,835 for the sedan and $17,635 for the five-door, with the high-zoot LTZ trims commanding $18,625 and $19,325, respectively (not including $795 for destination). Hit the jump for the official press blast.
Continue reading 2012 Chevrolet Sonic Turbo now available with six-speed automatic

2012 Chevrolet Sonic Turbo now available with six-speed automatic originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 18:59:00 EST.
