Red Bull has a rather unique way of ringing in the new year. Back in 2007, motorcycle freestyle daredevil Robbie Maddison jumped 322 feet over a football field in Las Vegas, setting a world record for the longest motorcycle jump. A year later, the Australian stuntman jumped 96 feet into the air, landing safely atop the Arc De Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas... and then he let gravity take over as he jumped his motorcycle back down.

Four-wheeled machinery has taken part in the festivities as well. Rhys Millen nearly landed a backflip in his trophy truck in 2008. The perennially insane Travis Pastrana made history in 2009 when he flew his Subaru WRX STI rally car from one boat-mounted ramp to another on a barge, clearing about 250 feet of open water in the process. Sadly, there was no record-setting feat in 2010 after Levi LaVellee crashed his snowmobile in a practice run, though he did set a 361-foot record before it was all said and done.

Which leads us to 2011, which ended in spectacular fashion as Maddison and LaVellee performed a flawless tandem jump over the water in San Diego, California. Maddison recorded a distance of 378 feet on his motorcycle while LaVellee set a new snowmobile distance record by soaring 412 feet from takeoff to landing. See the feat go down from multiple video angles (including one from LaVellee's helmet cam) after the break.
Continue reading Record-setting motorcycle and snowmobile tandem jump rings in New Year

Record-setting motorcycle and snowmobile tandem jump rings in New Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 14:45:00 EST. Google may have grounded its Street View fleet, but that doesn't mean there isn't still plenty to see on the search engine giant's most immersive of online tools. We've recently brought you news of the Street View team taking to the Woodward Dream Cruise, the Lotus test track and Laguna Seca, to name just a few. But as the proprietors of countless unsecured networks can tell you, Google's reach extends far beyond pavement.

In the ramp-up to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, just a few months ago, Google strapped its cameras to snowmobiles to map out the extensive winter sport playground at Whistler. Still feeling the Olympic fever? Planning a trip to Canada's West Coast? Just plain curious? Check it out in the video after the jump.

Yamaha Gen-Ryu concept bike

In traditional Yamaha fashion, the company announced a move that may finally allow it to stake a claim as the first big player in the breakout electric motorcycle category. By putting the For Sale Sign on 63.25 million corporate stock shares, the tuning fork company hopes to raise an impressive 812 million dollars that it will dedicate to a highly charged electric and hybrid engine development plan across both their two-wheeled (motorcycle and electric bicycle) as well as aquatic (boat and outboard motor) product lines. We have seen many concepts and indications of Yamaha's intent, but very little follow through up to this point.

The plan seems to be part of a healing process following 2009 in which the company posted losses north of $2.3 billion. Yes folks, we said billion... ouch! Yamaha, a company that traditionally has been eager to carve its own path in the powersports segment, hopes new fuel efficient and electric designs will lead to increased popularity in developing markets that have an ever-growing importance to manufacturers industry wide. We are left holding our breaths as to when these developments will make their way into the U.S. That will, no doubt, be largely dependent upon our buying trends. In addition, the company has also pledged to make all of its offerings more competitive throughout its lineup.

Most importantly, this means we will see some much needed diversity in the development of electric motorcycles. This from the company that brought us the fist modern four-stroke motocross bikes, as well as snowmobiles. We will eagerly look forward to Yamaha's new offerings, and the following jolt that it could mean for the company as a whole. Now, to figure out how to commute in the bicycle lane on our shiny new Yamaha electric motorcycle.

Thank God for crazy people. They're the ones who give us the best YouTube videos. To wit, after the jump, you'll see a couple of Icelandic snowmobilers with a lot of confidence and an unhealthy lack of fear showing off their winter-edition "Jackass" skills.

The pair ride their sleds into a local reservoir featuring some incredibly steep concrete walls for a bit of "fun." The video starts out slowly enough, until the first guy drives his snowmobile up the side of a 30-foot cliff. Impressive, if not foolhardy stuff. The next guy decides to top his pal with a move that would leave Einstein and Newton scratching their heads. We aren't sure if we want to send him to a psych ward or present him with a Liberty Bell-sized set of Truck Nutz. Hit the jump only if you're fully prepared to be stupefied.

Depending on where you happen to live on the planet, two-wheeled transportation may be anything from a year-round necessity to a few-months-of-the-year hobby. Right about now, at least half of all motorcyclists here in the United States have their scooters and motorcycles packed warmly away in the garage. But does it have to be that way?

Well, that partially depends on your penchant for excitement and snow sports. We remember having all kinds of fun on snowmobiles in our teen years, and after watching the video after the break, we have a new obsession to look forward to: snow-scooting.

That's right, remove the front wheel of your scooter, replace it with a ski and add a nice, knobby tire out back. Instant snow-scooter! Oh, and we apologize in advance for the soundtrack. Turn the volume down and check out the video after the jump.

The Rebel Alliance vehicle seen in above was apparently spotted at Guardsman Pass in Utah: a Subaru Impreza WRX rolling on a mighty set of treads wearing Ken Block's number and sponsorship paintjob. We have no idea how, why, or where he acquired such a vehicle, but we do know this much: Ken Block gets to have a lot more fun than the rest of us.
