Towing a vehicle, especially one that's powered by batteries and driven by an electric motor, can, if done incorrectly, be destructive. Recently, one of Frito-Lay's electric Smith Newton delivery trucks was towed for a parking violation and, according to Green Car Advisor, was reclaimed by Frito Lay employees who arrived with a flatbed tow truck. Well, as GCA's Robert Calem points out, it's unusual to witness an impounded vehicle towed, rather than driven, off the lot.
Smith Electric Vehicles has scored another win in the UK plug-in vehicle market. The Department of Transport has completed the first phase of a program to help purchase commercial electric vehicles (EV) at prices that are subsidized so that the initial cost is the same for the EVs as for gas or diesel equivalents. This program is open to public sector organizations like the post office and universities. Under this initial phase of the Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Programme (LCVPP), 70 vehicles
The U.S. will be getting Ford's small, all-electric Transit Connect Electric utility van by the end of this year. Over in Germany, ten units of the larger Transit van will be converted to run on electric power by Smith Electric Vehicles for Ford's colognE-mobil project, which is already underway.
After announcing earlier this year that it would spend over half a billion dollars over the next decade to put 15,000 alternative fuel vehicles into its fleet, AT&T has added its first electric vehicle. The telecommunications giant is one of six big companies adding the Smith Electric Vehicles Newton to their vehicle fleets. This first Newton for AT&T will be put into regular use to evaluate operating costs and performance. Maintenance and repair costs of the electric powertrain (particu
The Focus-based electric car that Ford is developing with Magna for a 2011 introduction is not the only EV program in the company. Early next year, Ford will start testing a fleet of battery-powered Focuses in the UK with funding from a British government program. The Technology Strategy Board announced a total of £25 million for eight projects, including the Ford EV test (we'll have details on the others up soon). Unlike the production-intent program in the U.S., Ford is collaborating wit
The Commercial Vehicle show may be over but the trucks remain ... on YouTube! Smith Electric Vehicles was reppin' hard at the show with 6 (count 'em) different trucks of various sizes and capabilities. We've told you about some already but there's nothing like a nice walk around with a personal introduction to the shiny paint and chrome from a company representative with a Brit accent. So if your flight to sunny England was canceled or you had other contractual obligations (my excuse) you can no
Smith Electric vehicles are already sold in the U.K. and apparently there is expressed interest from fleet purchasers in the United States who want in on the fuel savings that the electric commercial vehicles can offer. In order to sell their electric vans and trucks here in the states, Smith is investing some $30 million in a new factory which will produce versions of the Edison and Newton electric utility vehicles.
