The moral of the story: Don't buy cars in Singapore.

That nugget of knowledge comes courtesy of Fast and Furious 6 star Vin Diesel, who came to the realization after learning that a Toyota Prius rings the registers at an astounding $154,000 in US funds. Other notable vehicles that shock and awe the cast of FF6 include the Subaru BRZ at $130,000 and the BMW 6 Series Coupe (engine not specified) that empties the Singaporean wallet to the tune of $330,000. "That's gnarly!" announces Michelle Rodriguez, who reprises her role as Letty in the flick. Luke Evans, who plays the villain Owen Shaw, is similarly surprised to find out that a Honda Accord costs $130,000 in Singapore.

Why the ludicrous pricing? According to the video below, much of the high cost of cars in Singapore is due to taxes designed to discourage the purchase of automobiles on account of traffic concerns. The solution, according to the government of the small island nation, is to make cars so expensive through the use of what's known as a COE, or Certificate of Entitlement, that nobody (except the very rich, of course) wants to buy one. Problem solved. Scroll down below to watch the video.
Continue reading Fast and Furious stars shocked by Singapore car prices and you will be too

Fast and Furious stars shocked by Singapore car prices and you will be too originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 02 Jun 2013 19:02:00 EST.
TUM Create, a section of the Technical University of Munich, Germany, that has more than 100 technical types working on future solutions to mobility, worked with Singapore's Nanyang Technical University to come up with the Voi multipurpose electric scooter. The Voi - from the Vietnamese word for elephant - puts a rider behind an enclosed passenger cell that keeps proceedings narrow and can keep one of the occupants dry.

What's more, that front cell can be swapped for other modules like an open seat, a cargo box or a mobile kitchen. With the aim of being as convenient and affordable as a scooter and as comfortable as a car, the Voi can get up to 45 kilometers per hour (28 miles per hour) and has an 80 kilometer range (50 miles). A video explaining the project can be found below.

Revealed at the Taiwan International Electric Vehicle Show (EV Taiwan) this month, you can watch it being built and taken for a spin in the video below, and check out the press release below that.
Continue reading Voi scooter taxi offers options for commuters in mega cites

Voi scooter taxi offers options for commuters in mega cites originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Apr 2013 17:00:00 EST.
Though you might call the Singapore Grand Prix one of the newer expansion races on the Formula One calendar, its roots actually trace back to 1966 when it was run as part of the (long since defunct) Formula Libre. It came back in 2008 as part of the Formula One World Championship, though, and its first night race at that.

In the four years it's been run prior to today, Fernando Alonso won twice, and Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel each won once under the massive flood lamps at Marina Bay. Would one of these champions win it again, or would a new race winner be crowned? Keep reading to find out.
Continue reading 2012 Singapore Grand Prix lights up the night [spoilers]

2012 Singapore Grand Prix lights up the night [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 23 Sep 2012 19:01:00 EST.
Despite the fact that the design study of its all-new P1 supercar is set to debut in Paris next week, McLaren is still keeping busy selling its existing MP4-12C model. We've heard news of other special edition Macs, after seeing the one-off X-1 Concept at Pebble Beach, and now it seems that a limited edition MP4-12C will be made available for the supercar-inclined one-percenters of Singapore.

Slated to be delivered this weekend to coincide with the Singapore Grand Prix are three Fire Black SGP Edition McLaren MP4-12Cs. Very little is known about these specially modded Macs, save that they feature a unique paint scheme, matching interior, revised front and rear bumpers and lightweight wheels.

According to the rumor-dropper at Teeemspeed, each of the special-edition cars will command a whopping $1.28 million SGD (around $1.04 million U.S.) asking price. Lest you think that price is too steep for even the very capable MP4-12C, note that two of the cars have allegedly been spoken for.
McLaren MP4-12C Fire Black SGP Edition for Singapore, priced over $1M originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 15:30:00 EST.
It is exceptionally rare for Bernie Ecclestone to be shown the yellow flag when it comes to his Formula One business dealings, but that's what happened with two of his projects. A month ago, Ecclestone agreed to terms with France's sports minister David Douillet to reinstate the French Grand Prix at the Paul Ricard circuit (which Ecclestone happens to own). The contract hadn't been signed while minor details were settled, but the plan was that the French GP would alternate with the Belgian GP starting in 2013.

However, with the defeat of French president Nicolas Sarkozy and the election of François Hollande, new reports suggest that everything from the previous regime will come under review. And it seems unlikely that Hollande, who was voted in by taxpayers who wanted more for their money and their economic pain, will agree to have the state subsidize the race. Said the president-elect, "I do not think the French state should be responsible for any financial outlay. There are enough issues to consider without spending tens of millions of euros on a grand prix."

And across the world in Singapore, the GP is safe but the planned F1 Initial Public Offering in the nation-state now has a question mark after it. The squalls in the market that have depressed stock markets everywhere have IPO insiders cautious on the endeavor. Word is that they'll see how the imminent Facebook IPO fares and how the market responds before making a decision. There is also the matter of the Mercedes-Benz not having signed the Concorde Agreement, and Daimler says it needs to get that settled before F1 can go public. According to Reuters, if the offering isn't conducted by June then it - and the estimated $2 billion it is expected to raise - might have to wait until next year.
Yellow-Flagged: Formula One's French Grand Prix and IPO potentially on hold originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2012 13:30:00 EST.
Formula One has many homes: the Formula One Management company that controls its commercial aspects is based in London, the FIA that governs its sporting aspects is based in Paris, and you'd certainly have a point to make if you asserted its spiritual home was in Monaco. But none of these places are where its stakeholders are looking to float its Initial Public Offering. No, that place is Singapore.

CVC Capital Partners - the investment group that owns the majority of Formula One - has been toying with floating an IPO on the Singapore Stock Exchange for several weeks now, and according to reports is gearing up for the move. Both Bloomberg and Reuters are expecting that the stock issue would constitute about 20% of the business, likely to come mostly out of CVC's end which amounts to 63.4 percent, and not that of its manager Bernie Ecclestone whose stake comes to 5.3%. (Lehman Brothers holds another 15.3%, Ecclestone's ex-wife Slavica owns 8.5%, with the remaining 7.5% divided up between various minority investors.)

With the overall value of the business estimated at $10 billion, the 20% tipped to be offered on the open market is expected to bring in $2 billion in capital for its sellers, however CVC could opt for the minimum 15% to raise $15 billion. So... why Singapore? The vital Asian business capital has apparently been chosen to help F1 drum up support in the Far East, a region where grands prix are held in Malaysia, China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore itself.
CVC gearing up to sell 20% of Formula One with $2B Singapore IPO originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 18:31:00 EST.
Formula One may be headed toward an initial public offering worth a staggering $10 billion, according to Bloomberg. CVC Capital Partners Ltd., the majority owner of the Formula One Group, has hired Goldman Sachs Group to look into the motorsports empire's value. The deal would involve selling a portion of CVC's 63.4 percent stake in F1, likely with an IPO in Singapore. The news comes courtesy of an unnamed source familiar with the discussions.

Meanwhile, F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone has said that he will remain in his position regardless of CVC's course of action. He is not expected to sell his 5.3-percent stake in the Formula One Group. The CEO is reportedly in talks with current F1 teams over contracts that expire this year, offering big names like Ferrari and Red Bull up to $45 million to stay on. Currently, it's unclear whether any teams have agreed to the new terms, but Ecclestone says those talks won't need to be concluded for the IPO to progress.
Ecclestone estimates Formula One IPO at $10B, hires Goldman Sachs to investigate originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 18:50:00 EST.
We can appreciate a well-orchestrated prank as much as the next guy. But being the car nuts we are, we'd implore any would-be prankster to leave cars out of it. TP the guy's house, Saran-wrap the toilet, make a crank call or two if you must. But for the love of all things holy, please leave the cars alone.

At least that's what we thought before we saw the kind of candid-camera prank the BMW Performance Parts team had in store for one driver in Singapore. The proud owner of a 1 Series Coupe returned to her car in the parking lot to find her car fitted with a Performance Power Kit and an upgraded exhaust system. It's a marketing schtick that reminds us of TV shows like Overhaulin', but at least it's sort of car prank we can get on board with. Check it out after the jump, and be mindful of a little bit of Not Safe For Work language.
Continue reading BMW pulls The Switch on unsuspecting 1 Series owner

BMW pulls The Switch on unsuspecting 1 Series owner originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Oct 2011 12:30:00 EST.
The world is filled with curious questions. Why are we here? Why do we hate tomatoes but love ketchup? Why do Americans love crossovers? Why are there 150 brand-new 1997 Dodge Neon models with zero miles on the odometer up for sale in Singapore? That last one is particularly perplexing. Arete Trading Pte Ltd. has somehow managed to get its hands on a small flotilla of pristine Neon models and is currently in the process of parceling them out for the lowly sum of $1,350 each. That means, if you had $202,500 laying around, you could live the dream of driving a brand-new 14-year-old car every day for 150 days straight.

Or at least you could once you had the necessary vehicle systems straightened out. We're guessing that each of these Neons could use some fuel and brake system work in order to be even quasi viable. Still, as the good people at Motor Authority point out, get enough friends together and you could have one hell of a one-make race. Check out the sale here.
150 brand-new 1997 Chrysler Neons is the ultimate barn find originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 15:30:00 EST.
What makes Formula 1 stand out above all other forms of motorsport is not the level of competition, and it's not the glitz and glamor. It's the combination of the two. The race action keeps the hardcore fans coming back, while the allure draws in new fans from all walks of life. But the two need to be present in equal measures in order for the formula to work.

Many of those die-hard fans, however, have bemoaned some of the newer tracks on the calendar - circuits that offer great panoramas in exotic locales, but that don't make for particularly close race action. The Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore is one such track. While offering plenty in the way of glitz and glamor - particularly under the spotlights and a starry sky - it doesn't quite measure up on the racing action side of the equation.

That was, unfortunately, the case this weekend for the fourth running of the Singapore Grand Prix since its resurrection in 2008. Follow the jump to see what we mean.
Continue reading 2011 Singapore Grand Prix proves bright lights can't replace race action [spoilers]

2011 Singapore Grand Prix proves bright lights can't replace race action [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 15:02:00 EST.
The Formula 1 circus is still a little more than a month away from sailing in to Marina Bay for the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix, but an outfit like McLaren isn't accustomed to sitting around and waiting. So they've brought a little bit of Singapore to them.

The move revolves around one Peter Lim. The billionaire Singaporean businessman owns, among other properties, a series of bars and restaurants across Asia themed after the famed soccer team Manchester United, but after failing to acquire the team with a half-a-billion-dollar bid, has apparently turned to supercars instead.

With an undisclosed investment, Lim has joined the likes of chairman Ron Dennis, TAG founder Mansour Ojjeh and Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company in sharing ownership of McLaren and sitting on its board of directors. Lim apparently hopes to help McLaren Automotive expand into the Asian market, where it is preparing to launch the new MP4-12C late next year.
The Orchard Road area of Singapore is filled with shopping, entertainment and high-end living. Unfortunately, it's also filled with lots of water at the moment, and that water found its way into the parking garage of the local St. Regis Residences. Home to people with a healthy number of dollars in their bank accounts, the parking garage is, not surprisingly, filled with all sorts of exotic machines.

Those vehicles are now sitting in a rather deep puddle of water.

From the photographs in the gallery below, we spy a Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari 458 Italia, Rolls-Royce Phantom, a handful of BMWs, an Aston Martin, a few Audis, a Maserati GranTurismo and one very sad looking Porsche. The only owner who might be able to muster up a smile is the one with the keys to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

Check out the sad car carnage in the included image gallery.
Millions in exotic cars go swimming in flooded Singapore garage originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 19:25:00 EST. Lamborghini Gallardo Singapore Limited Edition

Markets in the Far East are increasingly vital for high-end automakers like Lamborghini. The Italian purveyor of exotic supercars has been in the Singapore market, specifically, for ten years. Now, to celebrate the milestone, Lamborghini has produced a very limited run of special-edition Gallardos exclusive to Singapore.

The Singapore-themed Gallardo was created in partnership between the factory and its Singapore importer. Available in white or black, the Singapore Limited Edition wears a set of red side stripes accented by a badge featuring the Merlion - the lion-headed fish mascot created by the Singapore Tourism Board in the 1964.

Only ten examples of the car were produced, and all have apparently been spoken for. Delivery of the entire run recently took place at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Singapore. S$20,000 (about $15k in equivalent American funds) of the proceeds from each Singapore Limited Edition Gallardo sold went to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund to benefit underprivileged students.
Asian markets are proving increasingly vital for exotic automakers like Lamborghini, but the latest reports in from the Far East show an unprecedented enthusiasm for Sant'Agata's newest model before it's even made its debut.

According to reports, more than 50 examples of the tentatively-dubbed Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 - whose specs were just recently leaked in advance of its anticipated debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March - have been ordered in Singapore alone. Potential customers in the Southeast Asian republic, which just relaunched its own Formula One grand prix a few years ago, received an advance preview of the highly-anticipated new supercar before it went on tour to Hong Kong, mainland China and Japan.

The LP700-4 reportedly costs SGD $1.5 million (or about $1.14 million) in Singapore, where the 50+ advance orders for the new model already eclipse annual sales figures for Lamborghinis, to say nothing of Aston Martin and Bentley, with Ferrari's sales figures squarely within sight. Thanks for the tip, Zen L!

There are many prominent and wealthy collectors of exotic supercars on Earth, but few can rival the secretive collection of the royal house of Brunei. The collection has been the subject of much conjecture, with only occasional leaks betraying its contents, but now part of the collection has apparently gone up for sale.

Among those rarities up for grabs are three Lamborghinis, two lightweight Porsche 911 Turbos, a Jaguar XJ220, one of only eight Cizeta V16s ever produced, the ItalDesign BMW Nazca and no fewer than 25 Ferraris, including an Enzo, an F50, an F40 and a custom 512 TR Spider.

Although the broker - based in New Zealand with the collection rumored to be located currently in Singapore - does not disclose the liquidating owner, few others than the Sultan of Brunei and his controversial brother Prince Jefri could have amassed such an assembly of exotica. Many of the cars have no more on the odometer than their original factory mileage, and all are worth well into the six and seven figures, making this easily one of the most valuable collections ever put up for sale. Follow the link to the sale site and check out the images in the gallery below for a closer look.

You drive up in your Aston Martin. Maybe it's a classic DB5, maybe its the latest DBS. You climb out. Walk into your private club, and order up a martini. Are you in a James Bond movie? Nope. You're in the Aston Martin Club Lounge in Singapore.

The space is a new lounge for Aston Martin owners and fans alike. Located at The Prime Society in Singapore's Dempsey Hill neighborhood, the club recently opened its doors as the first location of its kind in the world, and as you might have guessed, the decor is thoroughly Aston Martin, from the pictures of the sportscars lining the walls to the coffee tables made from Aston wheels. Macallan is the whisky on offer and Grande Annee is the champagne of choice, and you can surely specify exactly how you like your martinis, but something tells us the bartenders already know.

The naysayers will tell you that every grand prix - especially those held on newer-generation tracks - comes out looking the same. Different scenery, same story, they'll say. But even the haters were silenced a few years back when the Singapore Grand Prix re-joined the calendar as the first night race in the history of Formula One. The spectacle of the most advanced machinery this side of a fighter jet zipping around a seaside circuit under the lights put a fresh spin on F1, and has now become a regular fixture of the racing season.

Now in its third running, the circus rolled in to Singapore's Marina Bay against the backdrop of one of the most hotly contested championships in recent memory. Would this year's night race crown a champion, or defer the suspense for another couple of weeks? Follow the jump to find out.

BMW advertising gurus have a big job ahead of them when it comes to supplementing their longstanding "Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan with the company's new "Joy" campaign. Bimmer fanboys had lived and died by the company's proclamation of superiority for years, so it's going to take some coaxing to get BMW loyalists to swallow the new ads. Fortunately, BMW has never been one to skimp on advertising dollars, and the company has pulled a stunt in Singapore to make sure the ball gets rolling in the right direction.

BMW has used two buildings for a massive, unique 3D projection display right in the middle of downtown Suntec City. Talk about cool. Two massive hands appear to disassemble the structures and rearrange them for their own diabolical, Joy-soaked plans. You can hit the jump to see the whole shindig for yourself. Thanks for the tip, John!

From his brief tenure at McLaren, we know that Fernando Alonso has a bit of trouble getting along with his teammates. Especially when he doesn't get the clear preferential treatment as the team's #1 driver. After all, as has often been said, a driver's teammate is his chief rival. So after Ferrari confirmed that Alonso and Felipe Massa would be put on equal footing, we smelled some trouble a-brewin'. But we didn't expect it to start at least until the beginning of next season. Turns out, that was a bit premature, as some cracks in the relationship between the two teammates-to-be have already started to show.

Speaking with a group of journalists in his native Brazil where the F1 circus is preparing for this weekend's grand prix, Felipe Massa said with "absolute certainty" that Alonso knew about the plan to have wingman Nelson Piquet crash to hand him the controversial victory. That's a pretty hefty charge levied by his future teammate, and Ferrari naturally scrambled to issue a clarification (which you can read after the jump) but you can't take back what's already been said.

Massa was suitably - and vocally - upset when the Crashgate story broke, because without Alonso's ill-earned victory, Massa would have won the championship last year, instead of losing to Lewis Hamilton by one point at the last corner of the last lap of the last race of the season. Better luck next year, gents.

[Sources: Autosport; Ferrari | Image: Vanderlei Almeida/AFP/Getty]
Continue reading REPORT: Massa charges that Alonso knew about Piquet crash plan

REPORT: Massa charges that Alonso knew about Piquet crash plan originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 16:21:00 EST. As the Formula One circus headed toward its only night race of the season in Singapore, several compelling storylines were developing. The championship-leading Brawn GP team seemed to be righting themselves from their mid-season struggles with teammates Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello solidifying their one-two position in the Championship standings; the consistently quick Red Bull team looked to be keeping the pressure on when they weren't crashing or breaking down; former champions McLaren Mercedes and Scuderia Ferrari appeared to have finally made up some of their early season lethargy with recent wins for both Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton that put them in fifth and sixth place respectively, and the resurgent Renault team suddenly facing the possibility of being excluded from the results altogether in the wake of the Nelson Piquet, Jr. Crashgate scandal. Throw in the fact that everyone from BMW Sauber to Force India to Toyota were showing signs of incredible pace and the spotlights of Singapore couldn't have been shown on a more compelling race.

So, how would the drivers and cars handle the street circuit in Singapore? The bumps, the dust, the artificial lights? Follow the jump to read how the race unfolded.
