Ford has officially opened the doors on the company's new facility in California. The Silicon Valley Lab in Palo Alto will serve as a hub for technology innovation where the manufacturer's engineers and designers can focus on independent projects designed to make vehicles safer and more convenient. Ford has similar facilities all over the world, but this is the first of its kind in the States. The company is hoping the location, smack in the middle of America's technology capitol, will help draw in new talent and open the door for further technology partnerships.

In addition to cultivating new relationships with other companies in the area, Ford will also use the Silicon Valley Lab as a repository for data. The automaker employs a raft of sensors on its vehicles, and that information can be later used to better tailor the driving experience on new models. Ford says it may also look to use the data to improve efficiency and lessen congestion. Ford has announced that it will set up a new research facility in Palo Alto, California. While the manufacturer has similar labs in locations from Germany to China and Israel, the new location will be the first on the West Coast. Specifically, engineers and designers will focus on independent technology projects as well as finding new research directions and potential partners. While Ford is currently recruiting some staff locally, others are expected to be pulled from the company's global workforce. Something tells us the company will have no trouble finding volunteers to move from Dearborn to Palo Alto.

TJ Giuli is one of those volunteers. The Ford researcher is a Stanford alumnus who's going back to California to help lead the lab's establishment. According to Giuli, the research community in the area is excited to have Ford in the neighborhood. Hit the jump for the quick press release.
Continue reading Ford to open new Silicon Valley research lab

Ford to open new Silicon Valley research lab originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Mar 2012 18:05:00 EST.
Lots of things about commuting are aggravating. High on that list is the productivity that gets smothered while you're snarled in traffic. You can only bang along on the steering wheel to Clyde Stubblefield for so long before you start getting antsy to convert the stop-and-go into some forward momentum on a project. Now, what if the whole commute could be as comfortable as the leather seats in an Infiniti G37 while you spent the entire ride with your nose buried in your laptop?

Bay Area commuters can park the car, pay a bit more for a luxuriously-outfitted bus, and recapture that formerly lost commute time. It's more efficient and has a smaller carbon footprint than 52 individual cars with just a single occupant idling away, too. Bauer's Limousine Service, a company that already zips Silicon Valley worker bees from hive to hive, has added four first-class-only buses to its fleet, and it calls the idea Wi-Drive. There's Wi-Fi, power, TV, even meals and coffee on the Wi-Drive buses. A one-way ride will put the hurt on a ten-dollar bill, and there's still some coordination to work out with pick-up and drop-off points, but it could be worthwhile for the increase in productivity and the better disposition you'll have after spending that hour and a half working, or just surfing Bring A Trailer, instead of pounding your head against the wheel in frustration while you sit in traffic.

Even with a limited run of 20, a seven-figure price tag and ten making to the United States, you can bet there were more people who wanted to get their hands on a Lamborghini Reventon than there were examples on the market. However, one man's loss will be another man's gain, and a Reventon has just popped up for sale in California.

For those who've forgotten already, the Reventon was a special rebodied version of Lamborghini's flagship Murcielago supercar. It was named after a famous matador-killing fighting bull, painted any color the customer wanted (as long as it was grey - Grigio Reventon to be specific), treated to the very best the company had to offer and slapped with such a mark-up it'd leave a handprint on your face. But even with such a gargantuan sticker price, buyers knew it was bound to become an instant collectors' item. Case in point: this example, originally purchased eight months ago in St. Louis, has only 73 miles on the odometer, which we think is criminal. Let's hope someone buys it and drives it like it's meant to be driven.

Gallery: Reventon for Sale

[Source: Silicon Valley Auto Group via PistonHeads]
Lamborghini Reventon up for sale in Silicon Valley originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 08:33:00 EST.
