You get things like the road safety sign above, which was probably a caution for altered driving conditions, but now warns of the living dead.<br /><br />We suppose that state Department of Transportation never figured there would be enough bored engineering students to get around to tampering with the signs. That might be why the signs aren't protected by any substantial security measures - changing a sign only requires the ability to type. But before any state decides to spend a few million investigating this fissure in homeland security, a portable, proprietary keyboard would be a good, cheap place to start. And not that we should really have to say this, but we will anyway: please, don't play with the road signs. <em>Hat tip to reader Michael</em><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-10149229-52.html">CNET</a>]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/28/danger-zombies-ahead-programmable-road-signs-get-hacked/">Danger, Zombies Ahead: Programmable road signs get hacked</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 15:42:00 EST. Turns out that Britain's Department for Transportation (DfT) might agree with him, but first they're going to review all the signs in Britain to see how they can make things better. It will be the largest review of signage in 40 years.<br /><br />Among the variety of objectives, the review aims to examine new sign technologies to help manage traffic flow, provide better information, and reduce accidents and emissions. Another unsaid aim of the DfT is probably to get Clarkson off its back, which is always good for everyone. The first DfT meeting will take place next month, with the first plan of action for creating<font size="2"><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> "signs fit for the 21st century" </font></font>coming in about a year.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.newspress.co.uk/DAILY_LINKS/arc_sep_2008/120908dft.htm">Britain Depatment for Transport</a> | Photo from <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Magic_Roundabout_Schild_db.jpg">Wikicommons</a>, Credit: Dickbauch]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/16/jeremy-clarkson-wins-uk-reviewing-all-traffic-signs/">Jeremy Clarkson wins: UK reviewing all traffic signs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 09:58:00 EST. Tupac lives. And we have just discovered that M. C. Escher is also alive, well, living in Australia, and going by the name of <a href="http://de-war.de/">Axel Peemoeller</a>. Designer Peemoeller worked out the math to create, optically, directional signage that appears to hang in the air. Found in the carpark of the Eureka Tower in Melbourne, there's no technowizardy here, just a man with a can of paint and a few severely skewed letters. The result: mindbending. And bloody genius. Well done, Mr. <strike>Escher</strike> Peemoeller. Check out the gallery below for more of Axel's work.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/axel-peemoeller-carpark-signs/low/">Axel Peemoeller Carpark Signs</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/axel-peemoeller-carpark-signs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/peemoeller1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/axel-peemoeller-carpark-signs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/peemoeller2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/axel-peemoeller-carpark-signs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/peemoeller3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/axel-peemoeller-carpark-signs/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/peemoeller4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.ridelust.com/stereoscopic-parking-garage-im-freaking-out-dude/">Ride Lust</a> via <a href="http://digg.com/autos/Stereoscopic_Parking_Garage_PICS">Digg</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/04/parking-garage-signage-depends-on-your-perspective/">Parking garage signage depends on your perspective</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 04 Aug 2008 13:01:00 EST. The automaker from Ingolstadt applied for a permit from the Film and Television Office of Toronto to shoot a commercial that would allow it to place double "T" statues that measure six feet high and fifteen feet long all over the city for a period of three days. A <a href="http://www.ccnmatthews.com/news/releases/show.jsp?action=showRelease&amp;searchText=false&amp;showText=all&amp;actionFor=652259">press release</a> issued by Audi, however, confirms that no commercial would be shot, but rather that the statues are meant to act as billboards advertising the new Audi TT. The placement of the statues as advertisements, though, violates the city's signage laws. <br /><br />About 50 of the statues were placed around Toronto, some appearing in park settings where residents go to enjoy natural beauty and a peaceful environment in the city. Clearly, the statues are regarded as a major eyesore, and people are ticked off that Audi and its advertising agency, Maverick PR, bent the rules to place them in the path of Toronto's residents.<br /><br />Well, the citizenry has risen up against Audi's misuse of the permit and the fact that city officials ever granted it at all. Some have outright vandalized the sculptures, while others have appealed to the local government. City Hall has already responded by ordering Audi to remove all of the sculptures. Power to the people!<br /><br />Thanks for the tip, David!<br /><br />[Source: Seemsartless, <a href="http://spacing.ca/wire/?p=1898">Spacing.ca</a>, <a href="http://illegalsigns.ca/?p=2373">illegalsigns.ca</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/19/audi-tees-off-toronto-residents-with-botched-tt-ads/">Audi tees off Toronto residents with botched TT ads</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 19 May 2007 07:31:00 EST.
