For those of you outside of the United States, Mitsubishi has let loose the goods on the 2012 Shogun (formerly pronounced "Montero" in North America). It is mainly a matter of detail tweaks, with a bolder, shinier, redesigned front and new items like the six-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels and black roof rails. The turbodiesel engine is Euro V compliant, but it posts the same 197 horsepower and gas mileage numbers of the outgoing model.

Nomenclature has shifted, too, with JR and KS designations replaced by SG2, SG3 and SG4 in short- and long-wheelbase kit. The Warrior model carries over, and "will sit above the SG2." Prices work out to £29,499 ($47,574 based on current exchange rates) for a base SG2, ascending to £40,999 ($66,121) for the SG4. Follow the jump for the press release.
Continue reading Refreshed 2012 Mitsubishi Shogun rocks up

Refreshed 2012 Mitsubishi Shogun rocks up originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 31 Oct 2011 10:01:00 EST.
Way back in the late 1980s, Chuck Beck, who's perhaps best known for his excellent Porsche 550 Spyder replicas, created what in our minds is still one of the greatest hot hatchbacks of all time: the Festiva SHOgun. While nobody would mistake the lowly Ford Festiva as a performance vehicle, the SHOgun packed a 220 horsepower secret behind its front seats in the form of a V6 engine yanked from a Ford Taurus SHO. A legend was born.

There were only seven SHOguns produced in 1989 (number three is still owned by Jay Leno), so it's highly unlikely you'll ever run into one for sale. Of course, the possibility exists that you could just make one yourself... or, alternatively, purchase this replica on eBay.

The car's current owners claim to have purchased their SHOgun replica from a museum and say that it's powered by a 1996 SHO powerplant. We don't think so. The '96 SHO had a V8 engine and this one, like all the real SHOguns, used a Yamaha V6 - in this case mated up to an automatic transmission.

What happens when you take a mundane Toyota Aygo microcar and mate it to the go-fast parts of a Toyota MR2? You get the Aygo Crazy (Get it? I-Go-Crazy). While this one-off concept will never see production, it does offer us car nuts some insight as to what fun manufacturers can have with automotive inbreeding and some serious coin.

At best, the stock Toyota Aygo putts around with a 1.0-liter gasoline engine under its front hood that is good for about 67 horsepower, and a 14-second crawl to 60 mph. The engineers at Toyota spent about £100,000 (close to $200,000) ripping the wheezer out and replacing it with a mid-mounted turbocharged 1.8-liter engine. With the new powerplant cranking out 197 horsepower, and a manual transmission sending it to the rear wheels, the 2,200-pound Aygo Crazy sprints to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. If the go-pedal is held to the floor, the genetic experiment will top out at an estimated 127 mph.

Not to leave the job half-done, Toyota flared the bodywork and added a wheel/tire package to accommodate the power. The interior has been fitted with a cage, racing seats, harnesses and a Sparco steering wheel. The seats and doors have also been trimmed in suede and leather. According to those who have driven the Aygo Crazy, the balance of the car has been upset with the engine now mounted over the rear wheels. Snap oversteer is the rule -- much like in another econocar-turned-mid-engine-monster from 1990.

Taken from a japanese car mag named Driven, they show the facelifted SUV in and out and in both 2-door and 4-door trim. The new front end of the Pajero is a huge improvement over our current Montero with its smooth, flush face; integrated bumper bars; and what looks to be a serious skid plate on the two-door model. Of course, we likely won't get the two-door model in the U.S., but the four-door gets the same clean front end and a third row of seating with the tallest headrests ever incorporated in a production vehicle. The interior, likewise, has been simplified compared with the tangled mess of technology found on the current model.

We'll get to see the new Pajero up close and personal in Paris, so these pics we'll have to sate your apetite until then.

(More pics after the jump)

[Source: Nihon Car & Bike]
Continue reading New Mitsubishi Pajero shots leaked early?

New Mitsubishi Pajero shots leaked early? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Aug 2006 20:04:00 EST. The new shape is clean with little cladding, and features a wide powerdome bulge on the hood that flows down into a wide three-bar grille. New headlights are mounted flush with the front fascia that also incorporates a pair of fog lamps. Big fender flares also extend out over what appear to be 18- or 20-inch six-spoke wheels. AutoExpress is reporting that the next Shogun/Montero will be built on an all-new platform featuring a new 4WD system and torquey 250-bhp 3.8-liter V6. Though SUVs have fallen from grace as of late, Mitsubishi might be able to increase sales of the Montero with an all-new model such as this.

[Source: AutoExpress]
Mitsubishi's next Montero due early next year originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Jul 2006 17:26:00 EST.
