The Shell V-Power Ultimate Enthusiast Contest is looking for "the most die-hard automotive enthusiast" in the land. The most important part first, being what you can win should you enter: the top three finalists will be flown to Scottsdale, Arizona as guests of Shell for a three-day VIP experience of next month's Barrett-Jackson auctions that will begin with attending the opening night gala.

At that gala, the grand prize winner will be announced, and that grand poobah enthusiast gets to spend a week in Italy checking out "the country's historic sites and rich automotive history." Since that sounds like it could mean being hauled from one museum and car yard to another, let us remind you that Shell sponsors the Ferrari Formula One team. That means your Ultimate Enthusiast Week in the country shaped like a boot will mean getting a chance to use yours, driving a new Ferrari around the company's private test track, and every finalist gets a year's worth of Shell V-Power gas.

The particulars: you'll need to answer six questions and submit a photo illustrating why you're the Ultimate Enthusiast. Entries will be judged by Roger Penske, Barrett-Jackson impresario Craig Jackson, Car and Driver's Eddie Alterman; Road & Track's Larry Webster; Motor Trend Radio host Alan Taylor and Hot August Nights director Tony Marini.

You'll find a press release below with more information, and with just a day left to enter, you won't want to waste any time telling your stories.
Continue reading Shell Ultimate Enthusiast contest sends winners to Barrett-Jackson and Maranello

Shell Ultimate Enthusiast contest sends winners to Barrett-Jackson and Maranello originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 02 Dec 2012 15:03:00 EST.
With the price of a barrel of oil beyond $100 per drum, global oil powerhouse Royal Dutch Shell is raking in some serious coin. But while Shell is bringing in the big bucks, it still cannot pay one very important client.

Bloomberg is citing four sources who claim that Shell is finding it difficult to pay Iran about $1 billion due to financial sanctions put in place by the United States and Europe. The bill is reportedly the result of about eight million barrels of oil. On January 23, the European Union placed the ban on oil from Iran, but gave companies until July to wind down business with the world's second-largest producer of oil.

Shell is in a tough spot because it is stuck between obeying sanctions aimed at forcing Iran to scrap its nuclear program and paying the National Iranian Oil Co, which supplies about 100,000 barrels of crude daily. But while Shell is at risk of angering Tehran, other oil companies stopped getting oil from Iran months ago.

It doesn't appear that it will be easy for Shell to pay its bill, but there may be a way. Bloomberg reports that the oil giant could approach the British government to help settle the debt.
Shell struggles to pay $1B oil bill to Iran due to sanctions originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Mar 2012 10:29:00 EST.
Ford has expanded its licensed reproduction body shell offerings. The company announced professionals and enthusiasts alike would be able to purchase brand-new 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible shells earlier this year, and now the automaker has added the 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible shell to the mix, as well. Now, instead of being forced to source a shell and repair the inevitable rust, restorers can simply snap up new metal, thereby saving time and money in the process. Like the '65 Convertible, '67 Fastback and '69 Fastback, the '67 Convertible will carry a price tag of $15,995.

That lump of change gets you a shell that meets or exceeds the original specifications, including higher-quality metal than was used when the vehicles first rolled off of the assembly line. Dynacorn International will produce the shells under license from Ford. Hit the jump to view the full press release for yourself.
Continue reading Ford releases 1967 Mustang Convertible bodyshell

Ford releases 1967 Mustang Convertible bodyshell originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 18:00:00 EST.
As expected, a Democratic bill that would have put an end to the multi-billion-dollar annual tax subsidies for oil companies Chevron, Shell, BP, ConocoPhillips and Exxon Mobil failed to overcome a Republican filibuster on Tuesday evening. The heavily partisan 52-in-favor, 48-against vote fell eight shy of the 60 required to bring the bill to the floor.

If passed, the bill would have eliminated $12 billion in subsidies for production of oil within the U.S. and cut $6 billion in credits for taxes that oil companies pay to foreign governments. Finally, the bill would have put an end to oil companies writing off some drilling and development costs.

According to the Huffington Post, Republicans say that the bill unfairly singles out oil companies and would hinder their ability to hire American workers, thus leading to reduced oil production and increased dependence on foreign oil. Democrats argue that subsidies are unnecessary given that oil companies typically report profits in the multi-billion dollar range.

Three Democrats - Mary Landrieu (D-LA, pictured), Mark Begich (D-AK), and Ben Nelson (D-NE) - voted with Republicans to maintain the subsidies, while Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) sided with the Democrats.

As this chart - based on data from the Center for Responsive Politics - shows, the 48 senators who voted with the oil industry received over $21 million in oil-related contributions, while the 52 senators who voted to eliminate subsidies received a mere $5.4 million. Looks like money talks.
Senate votes down bill to end oil company subsidies, see how they voted and who gets oil money originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 May 2011 09:28:00 EST.
For years Marlboro has been nearly synonymous with Penske, its racing cars (in open-wheels especially) adorned with the tobacco company's red-and-white color scheme for decades, even if their name hasn't appeared on the cars since 2005. But after 19 years in racing together, Marlboro parent company Phillip Morris ended its sponsorship of the motor racing dynasty earlier this year. Now it appears that Shell Oil could be taking its place.

The deal, which comes into effect next season, encompasses Penske Racing teams in several series, including the Indy Racing League and both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series in NASCAR, but does not appear to extend to Penske's American Le Mans Series team.

In the Sprint Cup, the Shell deal comes at the expense of Richard Childress Racing (pictured above), which brought in Shell to replace Jack Daniels sponsorship which it lost last year. The Shell and Pennzoil logos will instead adorn the #22 car of Penske's former champion Kurt Busch, while teammate Brad Keselowski's #2 Dodge will continue with Miller Lite sponsorship. In Indy, meanwhile, the sponsorship replaces Penske's longstanding deal with ExxonMobil.
Shell's commissioned ad agency JWT to create a spot showing off the wondrous properties of Shell's Helix lubricants. JWT then commissioned Asylum Models and Effects to create a transparent Nissan 370Z out of Perspex. While we're surprised that - Shell being Shell - they didn't use a Ferrari, after watching the commercial's companion making-of video, we think we get it. And hey, we're not going to sneeze at a working, transparent car no matter what it is. Follow the jump for both videos.
In the world of alternative power, not all fuels are created equal. This fact is true with ethanol, where the alcohol can be made using fairly inefficient processes, some of which involve corn, or using more advanced cellulosic methods which do not use a foodstock. Diesel too can come from either petroleum or from non-dino sources. You're probably aware that Audi has been assaulting various race tracks using its advanced diesel powered race cars, specifically its two-time Le Mans-winning R10 TDI, which has so far been running on what is known as gas-to-liquid (GTL) diesel fuel. With the 24 Hours of Le Mans just around the corner, Audi and Shell, the fuel provider for Audi's race team, have announced that the team will be blending a small amount of biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuel into its secret mixture. Shell's BTL fuel is made from materials such as wood chips and will make its on-track debut on Sunday, June 1, as Audi's R10 TDI begins its official Le Mans testing.

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading Audi R10 TDI using biofuel for the first time

Audi R10 TDI using biofuel for the first time originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 31 May 2008 15:17:00 EST. As gasoline prices creep up towards $4.00 per gallon (already there in Southern California), consumers are still more likely to purchase fuel based on brand over price.

According to NPD Group analyst David Portalatin, consumers cite "product performance" as their justification for buying one particular brand over another. It's all due to very effective branding and marketing, cites Portalatin. (We'd have to agree, as we've yet to meet anyone who can discern a difference between a tank of Chevron or Costco fuel from the driver's seat.) Now that the massive oil mergers are behind them, the petroleum giants are focusing on selling "quality" to differentiate themselves from the discount fuel stations. As consumers continue to blindly drive towards big brand gasoline, their efforts are apparently working -- regardless of cost. Let's just hope Starbucks doesn't catch wind of this trend and try a new source of revenue...

Whether it's the spine-tingling spot that depicts historic Ferrari grand prix cars running on the streets in famous locales, or the very amusing "What will Schumi do next?" series (there were two spots), the videos offer a pleasant respite from the daily grind.

Today we got word that Shell's back at it, and its new viral video star is Ferrari driver Felipe Massa. In the spot above, Massa's diminutive Fiat leaves a pair of musclecar drivers speechless, and in the one we've pasted after the jump, Felipe interacts with customers at a gas station via a hidden camera/closed-circuit TV setup. His challenge to them: imitate the sound of a racing Ferrari. He's the Shell station owner in San Francisco who jacked up his gas prices to protest what he considered Shell putting the squeeze on his profits. On his last day of owning the station, Oyster pulled his other card: he dropped the price of gas to $2.99 -- perhaps the lowest price in the entire Bay area. Oyster said he was going to pump at that price until he ran out of the 6,000 gallons in his tanks, and our tipster said there were cars lined up around the block. We don't imagine he had to wait too long for 'empty' to come. Today he hands the keys back over to Shell, and the saga comes to a close.

But remember a time -- not so long ago! -- when $2.99 for a gallon of gas was considered highway robbery?

Thanks for the tip, Patrick!

Bob Oyster, a Shell station owner in San Francisco, is making a statement to Shell and to his customers to let them know what he thinks of it.

To hear Bob tell it, Shell has made it impossible to stay in business. After owning his station for 22 years, he's returning it to Shell at the end of the month. Shell charges him more for gas in San Francisco than in other parts of the Bay, where he also owns stations, but won't let him buy gas anywhere else. They have also raised his rent by leaps and bounds. Five years ago he fought to keep his rent at $6,000 per month based on real estate values, when Shell wanted $13,000. This year they again requested $13K. Shell says that's what the market is worth. Oyster says "I got fed up." What did he do? He raised his gas prices to well over $4 a gallon, and ever since, he hardly sees a customer.

"It makes a statement," he said, "and I guess when people see that price they also see the Shell sign right next to it." Like other independent owners, Oyster makes his money off the convenience store extras, but his lot is so small he doesn't have room for much other than candy and cigarettes. He believes oil companies are trying to squeeze out the independents, but Shell says most of its stations are independently-owned and that that number is increasing. "I'm going out with a bang,'' says Oyster. "And I don't care if I don't pump a gallon on the last day.'' And he probably won't: the Chevron across the street sells gas for 70 cents less.

We reported a couple weeks ago that Shell was pouring big money into furthering its brand association with Ferrari and F1 racing by filming what was projected to be the most expensive television advertisement ever to be produced. The commercial was set to feature a Ferrari F1 car racing through the streets of downtown Sydney, London and New York.

The crew was reportedly all set to begin filming in Sydney last week when they ran into a slight glitch: at the last second, the government in the state of New South Wales denied the film crew the necessary permits to begin filming. When it was suggested that they could obtain the permit by making a certain - ahem - "charitable contribution", the presumably enraged producer called a halt to production and the entire crew packed up and left.

For our readers in Australia hoping to get a glimpse of the Ferraris racing through their streets, you'll know who to blame for the disappointment. All is not lost, however, as a Ferrari street parade is scheduled to run down Melbourne's Lygon street on March 3. The event, which will serve as a combined promotion for the Australian Grand Prix and for Ferrari's 60th anniversary, will feature 60 Ferraris rolling down the closed-off street section, including a modern Ferrari F1 race car.

There are a lot of superlatives that could be equally applied to Ferraris and to custom choppers by their respective enthusiasts, and we're not going to try to name them all. But that's probably why there have been so many efforts to blend the two, with varied results.

One builder of custom choppers built a red stallion for Michael Schumacher upon his retirement. Another motorcycle craftsman built two one-off sport-bikes: one powered by a Ferrari V12 and another with a V8 out of a Ferrari 308. Even legendary custom bike designer Arlen Ness styled a chopper after the iconic Testarossa.

The latest crossover between the world of the steel stallion and the prancing horse is this custom chopper, powered by the 140-hp engine from the Triumph 955 Triple. The high-gloss red paintjob even comes complete with race livery, but after watching Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, we're surprised the builder didn't include the team's principle sponsor. The bike was recently up for sale on eBay for about fifteen grand.

Ferrari North America has announced the schedule for the 2007 Ferrari Challenge series. The series gives private gentleman-racers the chance to compete in the longest-running sanctioned racing series behind the wheels of their own specially-prepared F430 Challenge cars at locations around North America, in parallel to series across the ocean.

The series has been running since 1993, when the 348 was the chosen vehicle, replaced two years later by the 355. While the earlier cars were retrofitted, the purpose-built 360 Challenge was introduced in 2000 and is being entirely phased out in the new season after one year of overlap with the 430. This season will bring the Ferrari Challenge series to Homestead, Florida the weekend of March 9-11, Infineon in California April 13-15, Virginia May 18-20, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal to coincide with the Canadian Grand Prix from June 8-10, up at the renovated Circuit Mont Tremblant the following weekend, down to California Speedway August 10-12, then at Laguna Seca the next weekend before the world finals in Italy in late October.

Continues after the jump, where you'll also find the official press release.

Shell Oil, those guys who are getting richer while we all get poorer at the gas pumps, are aiming to break the record for the most expensive advertisement, and the Super Bowl doesn't even factor into it. The fossil-fuels giant is a long-time sponsor of Scuderia Ferrari, and pours millions into the F1 team each year so that enthusiasts and consumers will associate its fuels - Shell V-Power high-performance gasoline, specifically - with Ferrari's racing success. But just to drive the point home even further, Shell is spending close to ?2 million to produce a television commercial.

Wondering how you could possibly spend that kind of cash on a TV ad? No big name endorsements; that's already taken care of. No elaborate sets or costly special effects; you don't need that when you've got a 700-horsepower F1 car at your disposal. The commercial is anticipated to feature an F1 race car speeding around the corners and down the streets of New York, London and Sydney. And we'll bet it's not going to be at five in the morning, either. Closing down big city streets in the middle of the day costs big, and Shell is spending big.

There's no race on any of the islands. There are, of course, no teams based there. And the closest they have to a home-grown driver is British-born Lewis Hamilton, whose father comes from the region. But Barbados got a taste of the action yesterday when Ferrari brought Schumacher's 248 to the island for a demonstration.

The event was a promotion for Shell, one of the Scuderia's biggest sponsors. Test driver Marc Gene drove the car down an impromptu track on a closed-off section of the island's Ronald Mapp Highway between two Shell stations, a circuit which Gene likened to Monaco.

Over twenty thousand spectators showed up for the event. But while they were screaming with excitement, Gene couldn't hear them over the wail of the engine as he rocketed to sixty in under a second, hitting a top speed of over 270 kph.

It's doubtful the event will prove a precursor to a future Caribbean Grand Prix, but just the same it's good to share the octane.

It's said to deliver more power and clean cars' engines, but the alleged benefits come at a price: 6p/liter more than regular diesel.

But hey, if your daily driving routine involves fantasies of hurtling down the Mulsanne Straight in your Vauxhall, then maybe this is for you. At the very least, you'll be making the Shell shareholders (say it fast) happy.

[Source: WhatCar.com]
UK drivers: Feed your diesel the Audi R10's fuel originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 15:34:00 EST.
Did you like the last Shell Schumi ads we brought you? The commercials hit the German airwaves after the seven-time world champ retired, and we brought you episodes 1 & 3. Now, episode 2 has found its way onto the net, thanks to the same intrepid German fan.

This one features Michael standing like a cut-out of himself in the store at a Shell station, patiently holding his ground while the retail muzak plays. Well worth watching just to see how many Deutsche motorists do a double-take. Would you believe your eyes if you saw Schumacher standing in the corner of your local gas-n'-go?

VIDEO: What will Schumi do next?

Between jaunts to his private isle and the possiblity of a test driving gig, it's an apt question. However, Shell seems to have the answer... or an answer anyway. Plus, it's an entertaining one at that.

In what appears to be a series of ads for German television, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher greets surprised customers at a local gas station. Now I don't remember getting that kind of service the last time I filled up at the Shell station.

A pair of Ferrari 599 GTB Fioranos took on a full tank V-Power premium fuel and topped off with Q synthetic oil before heading out to Las Vegas. The U.S. is the last of 16 countries for the tour, which started in Brazil on August 24. The Ferraris will travel through Monument Valley down to Dallas and Houston before reaching Miami late next week. From Florida, the team travels to Washington DC, Chicago and Detroit and finishes in New York on November 17. Officials say the tour is designed to introduce the new Ferrari to America and to showcase the Ferrari-Shell technical relationship. According to Marcos Tatijewski, the support team leader from Shell, the cars are averaging about 5km per liter, which is just under 12mpg. Much of the driving has been on dirt or "stone" roads, leading to two flat tires and a busted foglamp. The worst road was north of Chile and the longest border crossing was into Nicaragua. Tatijewski said oil and gas samples are taken at every stop for lab analysis. Even though Shell stations are not available in some locations, the team is not relying on octane additives. Tatijewski said one of the trip's goals was to evaluate the vehicles in a "real-world" situation. Whether or not the average owner will take a Ferrari over a boulder-strewn, 15,000-foot mountain pass trail can be considered real world is left to be debated. Also, Tatjewski said the drivers are following speed limits. Some stretches have been through politically tense areas (meaning guerrilla activity), so the team doesn't want to draw too much attention to itself. Daily logs and photos can be found at the Shell Web site.
Ferrari Panamerican 20,000-mile adventure rolls into Los Angeles originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Oct 2006 18:24:00 EST.
