9Universite Laval wins Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2014 with 2,824 mpg

At the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon Americas in Houston this past weekend, Canadian teams took the top two spots in the gasoline Prototype category. The winning team, from Université Laval, managed to hit 2,824 miles per gallon (mpg), just a few drops ahead of the second-place team, the University of Toronto, which finished with 2,712 mpg. Last year, the winning team got 3,587 mpg. The winning fuel economy figures have ranged in the past all the way up to and over 8,000 mpg.

22Visiting the Shell Technology Center, Part 2: The Law of Unleaded [w/videos]

Cheap Gas, Top Tier Gas, Premium Gas And You

Shell invited us to its Technology Center near Houston, Texas to learn more about its V-Power premium gasoline, and we ended up learning not only about detergent additives but also what the Internet thinks happens inside a car's engine. In Part One of the story of our visit, we tackled the Internet and the engine internals, laying out the ways in which some of your engine's parts get layered in carbon buildup because of gasoline.

How Gasoline Works And Why Your Engine Needs To Clean Up After Itself

Two of the most important additions to a car are also two of the most commonly ignored: gasoline and tires. Companies pour staggering amounts of money, energy and resources into designing, engineering and gaining percentile improvements in automobiles, and what they get in return from consumers is a staggering amount of "Which one is cheapest?"

58Energy industry's profits stumble in Q4 2013 as easy petroleum fades

Big Oil has a lot more to worry about than fighting the biofuels industry over the Renewable Fuel Standard. Fourth quarter 2013 earning reports show that major oil companies haven't been as profitable lately as they used to be.

60Oil company predicts gas-powered cars will be 'nearly' gone by 2070 [w/video]

"By 2070, the passenger road market could be nearly oil-free." That's the key line (for us, anyway) in a report out from Shell titled New Lens Scenarios. The oil giant is trying to understand the future (who isn't?) and to do that, it envisioned two possible futures, one called "Mountains" and the other "Oceans."

AddDaimler, others promise 100 hydrogen stations in Germany in four years, 400 by 2023

OK, this time they're really doing it. Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler is leading a collaboration between a half-dozen companies - including Air Liquide, Linde, OMV, Shell and Total - that will rapidly expand Germany's publicly accessible hydrogen refueling network in order to better spur the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle market.

121955 Belgian GP movie tells the story of Spa

With the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix happening this weekend, Shell reminded a few guests what the Spa-Francorchamps track and Belgian countryside were like in 1955. That year the petroleum company made a 30-minute movie about the grand prix - this is back when the track was called the Francorchamps National Circuit, near the town of Spa, and a list of its important corners didn't include a mention of Eau Rouge - where it was doing the same thing it still does today: working on fuels and lubri

7Shell Ultimate Automotive Enthusiast contest returns to send winner to Barrett-Jackson and Maranello

The first Shell V-Power Ultimate Enthusiast contest was held last year and sent finalists to a VIP experience at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, while the grand prize winner went to Maranello, Italy for some intimate time with Ferrari. An Oil Company Spends Big To Teach Students To Use Less

16Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2013 winners wring 3,587 miles from one measly gallon

On a sunny, at times windy weekend in downtown Houston, TX, 131 vehicles competed in the Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2013, racing round and round Discovery Green for two full days. All told, they used like a gallon of gasoline.

7Shell Eco-marathon: Day 2, students get creative under pressure

Watching the Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2013 is, to be honest, kind of boring. Yes, the vehicles are all interesting and unusual, but they don't go very fast, you only see them on the track for a brief moment (there's no live video feed) and the ones competing against each other aren't even racing at the same time. But this is an efficiency challenge, after all, and one where students can learn by doing. Much of the action, after all, is off-side. It's the struggle of the 120 different high sch

20Shell Eco-marathon 2013: Notes from Day 1, will 2,545 mpg be beat?

The Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2013 kicked off in Houston, TX this morning with a twist on the usual: Ladies and gentlemen, start your fuel-efficient engines. The area around Discovery Green was buzzing with high school and college students, all here with one mission: go as far as possible on as little fuel as possible. Last year, the winning team in the internal combustion category got 2,564.8 miles per gallon. That's quite an increase since the first Eco-marathon back in 1939, when the winner

2Shell Ultimate Enthusiast contest sends winners to Barrett-Jackson and Maranello

The Shell V-Power Ultimate Enthusiast Contest is looking for "the most die-hard automotive enthusiast" in the land. The most important part first, being what you can win should you enter: the top three finalists will be flown to Scottsdale, Arizona as guests of Shell for a three-day VIP experience of next month's Barrett-Jackson auctions that will begin with attending the opening night gala.

40Shell struggles to pay $1B oil bill to Iran due to sanctions

With the price of a barrel of oil beyond $100 per drum, global oil powerhouse Royal Dutch Shell is raking in some serious coin. But while Shell is bringing in the big bucks, it still cannot pay one very important client.

27Ford releases 1967 Mustang Convertible bodyshell

Ford has expanded its licensed reproduction body shell offerings. The company announced professionals and enthusiasts alike would be able to purchase brand-new 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible shells earlier this year, and now the automaker has added the 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible shell to the mix, as well. Now, instead of being forced to source a shell and repair the inevitable rust, restorers can simply snap up new metal, thereby saving time and money in the process. Like the '65 Convertible,

AddShell, Cosan formalize creation of Razien sugarcane ethanol JV

In one of the biggest biofuel deals to date, Shell, along with Cosan – one of the world's leading producers of sugarcane-based ethanol – has launched a multi-billion dollar joint venture (JV) to become a leading producer of the low-carbon biofuel. Named Raízen, this massive retail and commercial fuels company will operate out of Brazil and focus solely on ethanol made from Brazilian sugarcane.

AddShell VP says global CO2 policy is a necessity

A global CO2 emissions policy is "urgently needed" if the world is to avoid political issues in the future, according to Shell.

121Senate votes down bill to end oil company subsidies, see how they voted and who gets oil money

As expected, a Democratic bill that would have put an end to the multi-billion-dollar annual tax subsidies for oil companies Chevron, Shell, BP, ConocoPhillips and Exxon Mobil failed to overcome a Republican filibuster on Tuesday evening. The heavily partisan 52-in-favor, 48-against vote fell eight shy of the 60 required to bring the bill to the floor.
