You can count on the fact that there will be plenty of tributes to the late <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/carroll shelby/">Carroll Shelby</a> over the next several months and years - most of them taking the vehicular shape of the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang/">Ford Mustang</a>, we'd wager. The one you see above was created by a group called Friends of Carroll and was unveiled by Edsel Ford II, <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> marketing VP <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/jim farley/">Jim Farley</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/shelby/">Shelby</a> American President John Luft at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/montery motorsports reunion/">2012 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion</a>.<br />
<br />
The 2013 GT500's stock 662-horsepower 5.8-liter V8 engine has seen its power bumped to an even 850 horses with upgrades provided by Ford Racing. A widebody kit from Shelby covers up the 13-inch-wide rear wheels and 345-series tires. The car is painted in Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes - a classic color combination seen on many Cobra roadsters from the 1960s.<br />

As you're surely aware by now, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a> boasts a 5.8-liter beast of an engine making 662 horsepower, partnered in crime by 631 pound-feet of torque.<br />
<br />
There seems little to gain in rehashing what we already know - namely, that the 2013 GT500 is fast. Stupid, stinking, earth-shatteringly fast. Ignorantly fast, even. This much is a given. Anybody who can read a spec sheet knows that the GT500 can set ablaze a straight-line drag race and will be even more ludicrous with its snake-encrusted nose pointed toward an unlimited runway. This Mustang will gallop to two 202 miles per hour in fact, which is pure insanity.<br />
<br />
But why? What's the point? To put it another way, what do you do with a two-door coupe straining to keep that supertanker-size engine firmly attached to its motor mounts while the traction control tries (and fails miserably) to keep its rear tires planted? When the keys to the 2013 Shelby GT500 were handed to us, we figured we'd have exactly one week to find out why anyone would want to buy one, beyond the obvious, of course.<br />

We've already watched the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/08/23/motor-trend-picks-its-top-drivers-car-of-2012-w-video/">2012 </a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/best+drivers+car/">Best Driver's Car</a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/08/23/motor-trend-picks-its-top-drivers-car-of-2012-w-video/"> competition</a> from <em><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/motor%20trend">Motor Trend</a> </em>numerous times, and like us, apparently many M/T viewers had questions about the week-long, nine-car comparison. Not wanting to disappoint its audience, the crew got together to enjoy a few pints while reflecting on the experience and respond to viewer questions during an episode of The Downshift.<br />
<br />
It sounds like one of the most frequent questions asked was why some cars made the list and others were left out in the cold. First and foremost, the editors wanted to assemble a group of the newest (or significantly updated) most fun-to-drive cars available, but had to do so within the constraints of the automakers' test vehicle fleets. This explains why, for instance, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/subaru/brz">Subaru BRZ</a> made it in to the final group of nine, while no <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ferrari/">Ferrari</a> did.<br />
<br />
M/T also addressed the age-old question of how and why a non-manual transmission car could be considered a top driver's car. Editors were quick to point out that, with the great automated manual gearboxes used on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/911/">Porsche 911</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/gtr/">Nissan GT-R</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/c63+amg/">Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG</a> Black Series Coupe, all that the cars were really missing was a clutch pedal.<br />
<br />
Some of the more interesting bits of the conversation included a breakdown of tire and brake replacements required during this massive comparison. We were amazed to find out that only four sets of tires were shredded, but the "surprising amount of brakes" that required replacement definitely made sense for a competition like this at a track like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/mazda%20raceway%20laguna%20seca/">Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca</a>. Another thing that caught our attention was the amount of negative feedback in regards to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lamborghini/aventador/">Lamborghini Aventador</a> (which finished dead last) - from the failed brakes to Autoblog-alumnus Jonny Lieberman stating that "it had no business on a racetrack."<br />
<br />
From Jonny's praise of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/porsche+pdk+transmission/">PDK transmission</a> to former Editor-in-chief Angus Mackenzie's vibrant description of the 911's handling, it's easy to see why the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/">Porsche</a> was named M/T's Best Driver's Car for 2012.<br />

Our old pal <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jonny+lieberman/">Jonny Lieberman</a> gets to have all the fun. The former Autoblog editor now gets to play with multiple supercars at a time for his post at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/motor+trend/"><em>Motor Trend</em></a>. As part of MT's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/08/23/motor-trend-picks-its-top-drivers-car-of-2012-w-video/">Best Driver's Car award</a> process, Lieberman and the rest of the magazine's team quarter-mile all of the year's contenders in what they call "The World's Greatest Drag Race." Based on the contenders, we're inclined to agree with their bluster.<br />
<br />
While <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/09/12/ferrari-458-italia-named-best-drivers-car-of-2011-participates/">last year's race</a> saw the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/gtr/">Nissan GT-R</a> edge out the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ferrari/458+italia/">Ferrari 458 Italia</a>, this year features a few new contenders, including the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lamborghini/aventador/">Lamborghini Aventador</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/misc/2012+mclaren+mp4-12c/">McLaren MP4-12C</a>. Other contestants include the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/21/2012-mercedes-benz-c63-amg-coupe-black-series-first-drive-review/">Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Chevy Camaro ZL1</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/subaru/brz/">Subaru BRZ</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jaguar/xkr-s/">Jaguar XKR-S</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/911/">Porsche 911 Carrera S</a>, which - spoiler alert - actually won the Best Driver's Car award this year. Oh, and the updated version of Nissan's GT-R makes a repeat appearance, but no Ferraris are in the field this year.<br />

A special thanks should go out to the Subaru BRZ. It was so far behind the competition that it provided many of the wide-angle shots that captured the whole rest of the field. The straight line is not the forte of a 200-horsepower drift-o-matic, but a fourth place finish in this year's Best Driver's Car competition is a mighty feat for this seemingly outmatched sports car.<br />

Here's a test of nine cars (see above), only two of which make less than 500 horsepower. Three of these nine cars recorded 0-60 times of less than three seconds, and all the rest but one (the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/subaru/brz/">Subaru BRZ</a>), did it in 4.2 or less. Those are impressive stats, to be sure, but huge horsepower figures and stupid-quick acceleration, while certainly amazing in its own way, doesn't necessarily mean the car is a blast to drive - as <em>Motor Trend</em> says, if it were, they'd be testing a bunch of Top Fuel dragsters.<br />
<br />
No, the point of throwing together these nine cars was to find out which is the magazine's Best Driver's Car of 2012. As you might imagine, a lot of instrumented testing goes into the equation, but perhaps the most important pieces of information come from the pilots behind the wheel. Again, to quote <em>Motor Trend</em>, "picking the Best Driver's Car, while fun, takes a great deal of time, thought, sweat, and vicious arguing."<br />

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500</a> is an impressive piece of hardware right out of the box. It's a package capable of pulling 11-second quarter mile passes one minute and lapping your favorite road course with genuine fury the next thanks to its impressive suspension tuning and heady 662-horsepower. But how much quicker can its supercharged V8 get with a little tweaking? The guys from Lethal Performance recently set out to find the answer. The team isn't saying exactly what they've done to the king Pony, though we can see a set of dragstrip-friendly "bigs n' littles" have found their way into the wheel wells.<br />

As a result, the 3,852-pound two-door bolted down the drag strip in just 9.77 seconds. Judging by the "thank you" list in the video's credits, this GT500 may even be rocking a shot of nitrous, though we can't say for certain. International man of mystery <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/chris harris">Chris Harris</a> recently abandoned his duties in the UK for a trip to the States. Why? Because of two very important pieces of machinery: the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro zl1">2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby gt500">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a>. Harris took charge of both cars in Manhattan to evaluate their on-road manners before heading to the track for a little showdown. What did he find? On the street, the Camaro is actually easier to live with than its Ford rival thanks to a more comfortable seating position, friendly clutch and easy torque curve.<br />
<br />
And on the track? The ZL1 took top honors there, as well, beating the GT500 around <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monticello/">Monticello</a> by a full two seconds even though it has less power. Despite all this, Harris says if he had to choose one to be his very own, it would be a set of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> keys in his pocket. The hoon of hoons says that in this world, bad is good, and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang/">Mustang</a> is properly scary, where the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro/">Camaro</a> is simply too drivable. Listen to the sage words of the late <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/caroll shelby">Carroll Shelby</a>: "650 horsepower? Nobody else has it." We're guessing this footage was recorded a little while back, before the final certified rating of the 5.8-liter supercharged engine in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> came in at 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque.<br />
<br />
Indeed, there isn't a single car anywhere near the sticker price of the 2013 GT500 - not even the stupid-fast <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/zr1/">Chevy Corvette ZR1</a> - that offers as many horses under the hood as the most powerful production <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> in history. Suffice it to say, reeling in 662 galloping ponies and sending them to the rear tires isn't an easy conundrum to solve.<br />
<br />
And that's where launch control comes into play. It's a cool system, allowing the driver to alter the RPM held by the engine with the clutch depressed. Drop the clutch and, instead of watching your Goodyear F1 Supercar tires go the way of the Dodo, you hook up and take off down the drag strip.<br />
<br />
Or, ya know, you could turn the system off and smoke bomb your neighborhood. That's one reason why we've been so interested in the rivalry between the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Chevrolet Camaro</a> over the last several decades. The two cars have been swapping performance and sales-floor bragging rights since Chevy slapped its Bowtie on its Pony-fighter in 1967, and the faster model hasn't always been the better seller.<br />

That said, when it comes to the stoplight-to-stoplight drag race of the internet, nothing but good hard facts are going to earn you any respect. This being the case, the latest <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Ford Shelby GT500 </a>has been King of the Road ever since it was unveiled as a 2013 model. With 82 more horsepower (rated) and a couple hundred pounds less weight to move, the 'Stang out to outrun the range-topping <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">2012 Camaro ZL1</a> in straight-line performance testing.<br />

There's a reason the speedometer on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby gt500">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> reaches all the way to 220 mph. By all accounts, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> poured a substantial amount of development resources into the supercharged creation by running it through the ringer at some of the world's most hallowed courses. Those include the infamous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nurburgring">N&uuml;rburgring</a> and Italy's massive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nardo/">Nardo Ring</a>. The automaker has finally released a video detailing some of that work, specifically on the Shelby GT500's high-speed dynamics. In order for a production vehicle to safely operate at 200 mph, the machine needs to not only be able to achieve the speed, but also to maintain the velocity safely.<br />

It also needs to be able to stop at a moment's notice. As such, engineers ran the 642 horsepower sportscar up to V-max and proceeded to induce a full ABS stop. That must have been an interesting moment behind the wheel. It looks like we weren't the only ones to get our hands on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shebly GT500">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a>. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jamal hameedi">Jamal Hameedi</a>, SVT chief nameplate engineer, recently stopped by the Big Dog Garage to show off both the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang+boss+302/">Mustang Boss 302</a> and the GT500. It's no secret that Leno has always been a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> fan, and with the ridiculously powerful supercharged 5.8-liter pumping out more grunt than the comedian's own <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford gt">Ford GT</a>, the 2013 Shelby has earned itself another proponent. Leno takes the big horse out for a ride around town, including over some of the more punishing stretches of Los Angeles freeway before heading home.<br />

After all, that's the obscene amount of horsepower ripping at the rear tires courtesy of the supercharged 5.8-liter V8 under the hood. Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple. For the first time in its life, the GT500 has found itself lined up against a legitimate competitor in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a>. While that means the blown V8 churns out a diabolical 112 more horsepower than the previous model, it also means the top-tier <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> now comes with tricks like user-selectable <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bilstein">Bilstein</a> dampers, adjustable electronic power steering, larger brakes and an array of optional cooling systems. The folks at Motor Authority snagged some spy video of the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a> hitting the N&uuml;rburgring. Unfortunately, rain hit the 'Ring first, so while there are still some potent exhaust noises emanating from the 662-horsepower 'Stang, there isn't a lot of tearing it up on the slick surface.<br />
<br />
Let's talk nemesis, namely the 580-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/camaro%20zl1/">Camaro ZL1</a>. The battleground established, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> folks turned their verbal turrets on the Shelby and fired high-impact rounds - see Exhibits <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/18/camaro-zl1-chief-engineer-says-youre-welcome-to-ford-mustang/">A</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/20/camaro-chief-claims-zl1-will-outperform-shelby-gt500/">B</a> - on their way to setting an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/04/2012-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-runs-quarter-mile-in-11-93-seconds/">11.93-second drag</a> time and a "Holy smokes!" <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/10/06/gm-confirms-camaro-zl1-7-41-ring-lap-time-w-video/">7:41 lap at the 'Ring</a>. Since there's no reason to dawdle round the 'Ring, we have to expect that Ford's fly-by has some sort of recon purpose.<br />

As many will bring up once the time is set, the Shelby has a mess of advantages on paper: more horsepower, more torque, less weight. No matter, for as Cormac McCarthy wrote, there will be blood. We still don't know whose blood it will be, but oh yes, one of these cars is going to bleed. In the high-stakes world of performance cars, horsepower is king. It's the first stat bragged about by owners trying to explain why their <a href="http://autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Camaro</a>, <a href="http://autoblog.com/dodge/challenger">Challenger</a> or <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> is better than their foes', and it's the headline figure promoted by the automakers themselves year after year.<br />
<br />
When <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> announced that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Shelby GT500</a> would be punishing the pavement with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">650 horses</a>, the world stood up and took notice. Remember, though, these were just estimated figures, as the car had not yet been SAE certified. If reports from the Team Shelby message board prove accurate, the 2013 GT500 has finally gotten its official figures.<br />
<br />
How's about 662 horsepower and <strike>630</strike> 631 pound-feet of torque?<br />
<br />
Yep, that'll do. It's notable that these figures represent increases of 12 horsepower and <strike>30</strike> 21 lb-ft over the earlier estimates, and they also put even more distance between Ford's top-performing Mustang and Chevy's 580-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Camaro ZL1</a>. It also means the Shelby lays down considerably more ponies that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/zr1/">Corvette ZR1</a> and its 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft.<br />
<br />
Now, will we see a corresponding horsepower-addled response from <a href="http://autoblog.com/chrysler">Chrysler</a> or <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/gm">General Motors</a>? Only time will tell.<br />

<em><strong>*UPDATE: </strong>We've received an official press release from Ford quoting power figures of 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque, making the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500's engine the most powerful production V8 in the world. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> says the new model, equipped with the optional Performance Package that includes Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers, is capable of running Sebring International Raceway about 3.5 seconds quicker per lap compared to the 2011 and 2012 models (both down 100 horsepower against the 2013 model). Curb weight should be a couple hundred pounds heavier than its closed-roof cousin courtesy of additional bracing on the power-operated convertible soft top.<br />

The Shelby GT500, built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, will blast into showrooms this summer. It would seem on paper that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500</a> should easily slay the heavier and less powerful <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/camaro%20zl1/">2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1</a>. The former weighs 3,850 pounds and brings 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque to the table, the latter carries 4,120 pounds and 580 hp/556 lb-ft.<br />

Not so fast, says Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser (above). Speaking with Autoblog at an Arizona drive event for the Camaro ZL1, Oppenheiser told us, "We've done simulations. We predict that the ZL1 will be quicker to 60 than the [2013] GT500... We ran the N&uuml;rburgring and released a time. Ford took the GT500, too, and never released a time. I guess you can draw your own conclusions."<br />
<br />
When asked point-blank if he thought the ZL1 would be quicker around the 'Ring, Oppenheiser replied, "No question."<br />
<br />
Them sounds like fighting words, especially in the face of data that suggests the opposite is true. Remember, this is the same guy who <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/18/camaro-zl1-chief-engineer-says-youre-welcome-to-ford-mustang/">told Mustang fans "you're welcome"</a> for encouraging Ford to throw everything it can at the Camaro.<br />
<br />
But we're not counting Oppenheiser among the crazy just yet. All that power generated by the GT500's supercharged 5.8-liter V8 will be for naught if it can't reach the ground without turning into tire vapor, and let's not forget that the Blue Oval's bomber is still dragging around a solid rear axle, compared to the all-independent suspension sporting third-generation Magnetic Ride shocks on the ZL1. And who's doing the driving can always be the great equalizer when talking 'Ring times.<br />
<br />
