A burnout is like a boast, the rubber-shredding equivalent of Babe Ruth pointing his fingers at the center-field bleachers. And everyone knows once you've boasted, you've got to back it up. If The Babe had grounded out to first, the "Called Shot" would be a laugh, not a legend.

After doing a little burnout for the onlookers, the driver of this Shelby Cobra replica above ends up on the wrong side of the equation when his Cobra bites back. Thankfully, nothing but bodywork and some pride was hurt. Hopefully the driver has learned his lesson and knows to lift off the brakes and steer next time. Shelby-tuned 2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor - live at New York Auto Show reveal

Shelby American unveiled its all-new Shelby Raptor at the New York Auto Show last month, saying that it would build just 100 examples of its off-road bad boy, a pickup priced at $17,995 over the cost of the donor Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. But the Las Vegas outfit apparently underestimated just how popular the supercharged 575-horsepower 4x4 would actually be.

Strong early demand reportedly has Shelby singing a whole new tune, as the company is now saying it will build upwards of 500 units annually. While the increased production will likely make for at least 400 more happy owners, those who were on the original short list - possibly speculating on future values - might not be grinning as much. Needless to say, the company has assured everyone that each and every one of the modified Raptors will still be listed in the official Shelby registry.

Keep in mind that Ford isn't sitting idle on its trophy-truck-for-the-street, either. The company will reveal its own 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition this month.

We enjoy highlighting artists who turn their brushes, lenses or whatever medium they fancy towards the four-wheeled things in life. San Francisco-based artist Sabrina Chun has done just that with her series called Blackprints: Car Designs Reimagined, which is currently enjoying an overabundance of funding on Kickstarter.

In the series, Chun has taken eight iconic autos and created inverse black-and-white profile views of each. The cars include the Porsche 911, '67 Mustang GT500, Shelby Cobra, Lamborghini Countach, Volkswagen Microbus, Ford Model T and pop culture icons like the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters and the DeLorean from Back to the Future.

The prints will be available in two sizes, mini (6x9 inches) and jumbo (24x38 inches), and they're printed on 80-pound card stock made of recycled paper using environmentally friendly soybean-based ink and solvent. What's more, this is some very reasonably priced art; a pledge of just $34 or more will get you all eight mini prints, while a pledge of $139 or more scores you all eight jumbos.

If you'll indulge us donning our art critic hats for a moment, what we like about Chun's Blackprints is not only the fact that she's chosen eight excellent cars to feature, but the works will hang equally well on the wall of a garage or living room. They seem so simple, but you'll soon lose track of time staring at features you've never noticed before that only reveal themselves in the light of Chun's negative spaces.

2013 Shelby Raptor

Shelby American has definitely proven itself when it comes to tuning the Ford Mustang - look no further than its new 1,200-horsepower Shelby 1000 - but now the Las Vegas tuner has turned to the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor.

The big change for this already high-performance off-road pickup is the addition of a supercharger atop Ford's 6.2-liter V8, with spent gasses exiting through a Borla exhaust system. This improves the horsepower rating from a stock rating of 411 up to a shenanigan-ready 575. For a Shelby, the styling of this F-150 is very toned down, with only the company's name etched into the Raptor's digital mud to go along with custom wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires.

The company is only planning to build 100 of the Shelby Raptors per year, with pricing set at $17,995 on top of the stock donor Ford, which starts at $43,630. Scroll down for the official press release.

Just in case a stock 662-horsepower Shelby GT500 isn't powerful enough for your taste and the 850-hp Shelby Super Snake still fails to tickle your fancy, Shelby American has introduced the monstrous 2013 Shelby 1000 as the king of the Mustangs.

Using the same supercharged 5.8-liter V8 as the GT500, Shelby almost doubles the stock engine's power, which lays down an incredible 1,200 hp... on pump gas! Aside from the upgraded engine, the Shelby 1000 also has a fully adjustable suspension and big brakes.

2013 Shelby 1000 Mustang - front three-quarter view, black

True story: Last fall, I had the opportunity to spend a week with Ford's new 2013 Shelby GT500 - the Blue Oval's factory Mustang with 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. It's an amazing beast, to be sure. I'm not sure if it was Michigan's damp streets strewn with potholes and wet leaves, but at no point did I ever say to myself, "You know, Ford is on to a really good thing here, but what it really needs is about twice the power." And yet, for people in warmer climes with infrastructure in better nick - or for those whose muscle cars live their lives out on the track, there's apparently sufficient demand to warrant just such a beast.

Quick studies will recall that Shelby American launched its 1000 last year to commemorate its 50th anniversary, but it is returning to the New York Auto Show with a fresh version based on the 2013 GT500 I drove. The 2013 Shelby 1000 whips up 1,200 horsepower on pump gas thanks to beefed-up forced induction, engine internals and cooling. Wisely, it also incorporates an adjustable suspension and big brake package to make sure those ponies have the best chance being safely deployed to the ground.

What price the world's most powerful "production" muscle car? $154,995 for starters - donor GT500 not included. What, no convertible variant?

1968 Shelby EXP 500

EXP, in the case of the 1968 Ford Mustang you see above, stands for Experimental. You see, this is one of the cars used by the Shelby American team in the development of a long list of classic Shelby Mustang models.

The car, powered by a 390-cubic-inch V8 engine and known internally as The Green Hornet, underwent a huge number of upgrade sessions that saw it receive experimental fuel injection, independent rear suspension and unique disc brakes. That's right, a Ford Mustang with IRS!

In a somewhat baffling turn of events, despite a top bid of $1.8 million, The Green Hornet's reserve price wasn't met, meaning it stays with its current owner for at least one more auction cycle. Shelby American has made its name tuning various Ford products, and now the Focus ST can be added to this list. Just introduced at the Detroit Auto Show, the Shelby Focus ST doesn't add any extra horsepower under the hood, but it should still make sizable gains in performance thanks to an upgraded suspension, brakes and exhaust systems. Also on hand at the Shelby display was a widebody version of the powerful Shelby GT500 Super Snake.

Starting with the already-quick Focus ST, Shelby adds Ford Racing suspension components and bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors, all finished off with a Borla exhaust system incorporating larger, circular outlets. Cheesy body graphics aside, some of the styling enhancements include functional hood vents, a hatch spoiler, unique interior bits and wider wheels and tires. Shelby does mention a tuning option that will increase the engine's 252-horsepower output to more than 300, although no pricing is mentioned. Speaking of price, Shelby says this souped-up hot hatch will carry a "budget minded price" (*ahem*). What is that you ask? Well, after you buy a 2013 Focus ST from your local Ford dealer (base price: $23,700), the Shelby upgrades will cost an extra $14,995. Production of these cars will be limited to just 500 units.

As for the Super Snake, Shelby is giving the car a wider optional body kit to accommodate the 10-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels. Customer can choose just the wider units at the rear or at all four corners. 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang HFB Special Edition

Classic car lovers and automobile enthusiasts, take note: Speed's annual coverage of the Barrett-Jackson automobile auction in Scottsdale, AZ, is right around the corner, and with the planned 39 hours of live television will come one most-excellent giveaway, along with a few smaller-but-still-pretty-great prizes.

The headlining giveaway is a 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang HFB Special Edition. Want to enter? Of course you do. All you have to do is take part in Speed's Hagerty Fantasy Bid process and you're automatically eligible. A random drawing from all fantasy bid entries will determine the winner. The fantasy bidding process concludes on Sunday, January 20.

As befits the festivities at Barrett-Jackson, the giveaway Mustang is anything but stock. The engine is estimated to make over 800 horsepower due to the additions of full-length stainless steel headers with high-flow catalytic converters, a Borla exhaust system, high-flow air filter and an Ice Nine modified air intake.

Other modifications include a Ford Racing lowering kit and a set of 20-inch wheels fitted with Drag Radial tires. 1989 Shelby Dodge Dakota - rear three-quarter view, on castorsThese days, the Shelby name is synonymous with Ford Mustang performance, but it wasn't always so. Carroll Shelby spent plenty of time decking the halls of Chrysler with quick versions of otherwise plebeian models, including the Dodge Dakota and Lancer. Most of those machines have returned to the earth in spectacular fashion by now, but it looks as if one owner in Pennsville, New Jersey sealed two of the machines away from the world to preserve them for future generations. Behold what could very well be the cleanest and most original 1987 Shelby Lancer and 1989 Shelby Dakota on the face of the planet.

According to their eBay Motors listings, these machines have never been registered, and both still retain their original dealer markings, right down to the protective plastic on the seats and steering wheels. The owner even has the original batteries for both vehicles. What's more, both are #6 in their respective production lines, making them the first civilian models sold. The Lancer has but 22 miles on its odometer, and the Dakota 23. Right now, both relics have Buy It Now prices of $29,000, but the Shelby Dakota is the only one of the pair with a bid.

Of course, the real tragedy here is that the owner has effectively relegated these vehicles to museum duty. Depending on how they've been maintained, the damage done by sitting for years on end could require serious effort and dollars to erase. As of the time of writing, the truck is up to a smidge over $15,400 with three days left on the auction.

Who Are We To Argue With The World's Most Powerful Production V8?

As you're surely aware by now, the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 boasts a 5.8-liter beast of an engine making 662 horsepower, partnered in crime by 631 pound-feet of torque.

There seems little to gain in rehashing what we already know - namely, that the 2013 GT500 is fast. Stupid, stinking, earth-shatteringly fast. Ignorantly fast, even. This much is a given. Anybody who can read a spec sheet knows that the GT500 can set ablaze a straight-line drag race and will be even more ludicrous with its snake-encrusted nose pointed toward an unlimited runway. This Mustang will gallop to two 202 miles per hour in fact, which is pure insanity.

But why? What's the point? To put it another way, what do you do with a two-door coupe straining to keep that supertanker-size engine firmly attached to its motor mounts while the traction control tries (and fails miserably) to keep its rear tires planted? When the keys to the 2013 Shelby GT500 were handed to us, we figured we'd have exactly one week to find out why anyone would want to buy one, beyond the obvious, of course.

2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake - front three-quarter view, tilted

When Shelby first launched the GT500 Super Snake in 2007 (or relaunched, if you consider the one-off 1967 prototype), the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 was boosted all the way up to... wait for it... 600 horsepower. Fast-forward just five years and the muscle car landscape looks quite different. The 2013 Shelby GT500 now comes with 662 tire-shredding horsepower from the factory.

To their credit, Shelby American has kept pace the past few years, introducing an 800-horsepower Super Snake and the almighty Shelby 1000. The latest Super Snake model takes things another step further, offering up an incredible 850 horsepower. If that's too much to handle, customers can opt out of the supercharger upgrade and stick with the factory 662 ponies.

Of course, there's more to the Super Snake than just raw horsepower. The post-title package includes items like upgraded front and rear brakes, Borla exhaust, sport suspension, Shelby-designed 20-inch wheels and a beefier cooling package. There's also the signature stripes, fiberglass hood and an optional widebody kit that allows for wider wheels and tires.

In total the Super Snake package will lighten your wallet by $28,995, not including the base GT500, or $39,995 if you opt for the 850 horsepower version.

Shelby Cobras at the 2012 Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Alright, these aren't just any old snakes. These are the entrants in this year's Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and each and every car on track is an original Shelby Cobra. Nor is this your run of the mill hill, either. We shot a quick video at the infamous corkscrew at Laguna Seca for your viewing pleasure. While photos of the event do a smart job of capturing the chaos, there's nothing like seeing and hearing all the cars pour through the downhill chicane in quick succession.

With 289 and 427 beasts barking through side pipes, the pack offers up a V8 cacauphony unlike any batch of modern race cars. As you may recall, that gorgeous Daytona Coupe out front wound up going home with some wrinkled sheetmetal later in the day due to an off. Shelby Cobra CSX2000 at Pebble Beach

Every year, the organizers behind the Monterey weekend choose a specific model to serve as the "featured marque" for events like the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Revival, Quail Motorsports Gathering and Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This year, they honored the Shelby Cobra both as a nod to the machine's 50th anniversary and as a tribute to the recently passed Carroll Shelby.

With examples ranging from the first Cobra ever assembled to the first competition model and the legendary Dragonsnake, we can honestly say there's never been anything quite like this group parked on the green in Monterey.

In any other situation, an original '60s Cobra would be cause for a fit of jubilation. To see a whole nest of race-winning snakes coiled on the grass at Pebble? Mind-blowing. Flick through the gallery for an idea of the craziness.

Shelby Cobra Display in Monterey

It's been 50 years since Carroll Shelby stitched together the first Cobra. In the intervening half-century, the little British car with a big American engine established itself as an icon of the automotive industry. To celebrate the car's golden anniversary, Shelby American and Ford assembled a collection of some of the most historically significant Cobra models in existence at Laguna Seca as part of this year's Monterey festivities.

In addition to CSX2000, the first Cobra built, visitors to the track have a chance to get within whiffing distance of cars like CSX2002. The little red roadster was the third Cobra to roll out of Shelby's workshop and served as the first factory Cobra race car. Peter Brock, Ken Miles and Dave MacDonald all had a stint behind the wheel, and the car functioned as a competition test mule that would help shape future Cobra models for years to come.

A total of 12 cars make up the collection, including the very first big-block car, CSX2196. Miles plopped a 427 into a 289 chassis for the very first time in an effort to best the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport racers competing with Shelby at the time. The trick worked, and Miles set a precedent for a long line of 427-powered snakes. Even with its big engine, CSX2196 is said to weigh in at just 1,800 lbs thanks to its light-weight "fliptop" body. Both the front and back-sections can flip up to reveal the chassis and suspension underneath. Check out the gallery for a full look at all the cars on hand. Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance 2012

As much as we adore the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, there's a lesser-known and considerably more entertaining portion of the show: the Tour d'Elegance. Where as the councours gives onlookers a chance to take in some of the world's most rare and valuable cars as the machines sit parked on the lush green of the Pebble Beach golf course, the tour shows off the entrants as they were meant to be enjoyed. Those owners willingly hop behind the wheel and fire up their engines for a quick jaunt down 17 Mile Drive and the Pacific Coast Highway.

Let us be the first to tell you that there's nothing like the experience of seeing, hearing and feeling these cars as they saunter their way up Highway 1. Led by Sir Stirling Moss in a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, the tour featured a hefty number of original Shelby Cobra models. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the snake that Carroll built, and as such, the V8 British-American half-breed is one of the featured models of the 2012 concours. Saturday will see 45 Cobra racers take to Laguna Seca to go fender to fender. Stay tuned. In the meantime, check out a quick video of some of the participants on the course below.

The Monterey Peninsula is celebrating all things Shelby this week as part of the company's 50th anniversary celebration. The Cobra in particular will be a part of many events including the Pebble Beach Concours and the Monterey Motorsports Reunion happening at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The Shelby celebration is also especially meaningful since founder Carroll Shelby passed away back in May. As a tribute to the legendary racer and car builder, Shelby American, Ford Motor Company and Ford Racing have teamed up to build a very special tribute Mustang. Called the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra, the car features a custom widened body that fits massive 13-inch-wide wheels fitted with a set of 345-series tires. All of that extra traction is quite necessary, as a 4.0-liter Whipple supercharger has been fitted atop the 5.8-liter V8 to produce 850 horsepower. The look of the car is completed with traditional Shelby livery: Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra is currently on display at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion this weekend, and Shelby says that they plan to tour the car around the country for the next several months before it will be auctioned off for charity.
