2010 Nissan Sentra - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Sentra is usually considered a mid-pack contender for the small car crown behind such heavyweights as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, but Nissan has made some key changes for model year 2010 that may change a number of minds. For one, all Sentra models have received revised headlights and taillights, and certain models including the 2.0, 2.0 S and 2.0 SL also get entirely new front fascias that better reflect the brand's current design language. New wheels and bits of chrome exterior trim on some models also spruce up the small car's exterior for 2010. Inside the Sentra, Nissan has made leather seating an option, upgraded the stereo head unit with a 4.3-inch display and now offers a Navigation Package for just $400 with a 5-inch color touchscreen and access to XM NavTraffic.

Speaking of lower prices, Nissan has responded to the times by reducing the price on all six Sentra models (2.0, 2.0 S, 2.0 SR, 2.0 SL, SE-R and SE-R Spec V). There's a new overall base price of $15,420 for a 2.0 model with manual transmission, which is $70 lower than last year's model. The biggest savings comes with the SE-R and SE-R Spec V models, both of which are $1,080 cheaper than last year with base prices of $19,580 and $20,080, respectively. You can check out all the prices changes after the jump, though keep in mind that all prices mentioned do not include a destination and delivery charge of $720.

Nevertheless, the new Sentra, for which Nissan has only released three photos but promises more, looks more mature than the overly edgy current model. Combine that with more features and options available at a lower starting price across the board, and we think the Sentra may have a fighting chance of moving up a spot or two in the small car segment.
The compact sedan sees an increase from $16,930, which included a $660 destination charge to $17,030, including a higher $695 destination charge. The Murano was just redesigned and launched with a mildly lowered price for this model year. Not so much anymore, as it now jumps to $29,250, including a slightly raised $780 destination charge.

In addition to these incremental sticker price adjustments, Nissan has announced a mild increase to the destination charges for all of its 2008 and 2009 model-year vehicles carrying Nissan or Infiniti badges. Though Nissan has yet to comment on the reason for the price hikes, we'd imagine that the weak U.S. dollar and high fuel prices undoubtedly play a part in both the base price bump and the associated destination charge increases.

Gallery: 2009 Nissan Murano

[Source: Inside Line]
Nissan boosts price on Murano, Sentra and bumps destination charges originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Jul 2008 08:59:00 EST. But some of Nissan's more compact vehicles remain the bread and butter of the brand and fill the transportation needs of the masses. However, they're far from exciting and recent sales in the U.S. bear this out. To cope with these slow movers, Nissan is planning to idle its Aguascalientes, Mexico plant for a seven days this month so it can realign production with demand. According to Automotive News, the slowdown of car sales in America is expected to cause a bit of a slump for Mexico's burgeoning automotive industry, as many of the export models built there are intended for sale in the States. After the seven day closure, things should be back to normal, and hopefully sales of Nissan's small cars will rise along with fuel prices.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub. Although details are scarce, the idea of installing a modified version of the GT-R's twin-turbo V6 into Infiniti's flagship shouldn't be out of the question.

On the other side of spectrum lies an entry-level model that would sport a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine in favor of the 3.5-liter or 3.7-liter V6s that populate the majority of Infiniti's models. It stands to reason that the 200 HP QR25DE four-pot powering the Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V would be a good fit, and if Infiniti decides to continue with a focus on RWD vehicles, we smell a sales sensation.

Nakamura is quick to point out that, "These are just ideas we are thinking about." But if Carlos Ghosn's optimism for the brand is matched with the right amount of R&D dollars, there's little doubt that good things could be on the horizon.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub. Chrysler uses the CVT in a few of its products, Mitsubishi added the tranny to the new Lancer, and Nissan has begun using the CVT in the Altima and Sentra, among others. According to a Japanese business rag, Subaru is planning to add the gearless transmission into every model they make by 2010. The first Subie to mate a boxer engine to the CVT is rumored to be the updated 2009 Legacy, and a 2.0L diesel with a CVT may follow shortly there after. While the CVT will be available with every model, we're assuming (and hoping) that manual transmissions will be offered as well.

CVTs are usually a bit quicker off the line than automatics, but in our experience fuel economy savings are a mix bag. While the Sentra's MPG improved with the CVT, in the 2006 Ford Five Hundred, the FWD CVT version got two less MPG on the highway than the auto-equipped SEL model. As far as the driving experience goes, CVTs take a little getting used to since the transmissions keep the engine in the optimal rev range at all times and the transmission feels like it's slipping, but most drivers may never notice the difference.

Back when they were going by Datsun, the 510 was a capable facsimile of a BMW 1600/2002, but cheaper. Performance cred attained, Nissan continued to pump out various capable performers over the years. In 1991, the Sentra was due for a makeover, and Nissan managed to splice some 510 DNA into the SE-R. Car and Driver admonished 12-year olds to save the review so they'd know what to buy in 1998 for a screaming bargain and a hell of a good time. I saved the review, but failed to heed the stellar advice about picking one of these little screamers up in the late '90s. They're a lot more rare now, and finding one that's either inexpensive or unmolested is tough. It's the darndest thing - people know what these cars are.

Read on for more.

Gallery: 1991 - 1994 Nissan Sentra SE-R

Continue reading Future Classic: 1991-94 Nissan Sentra SE-R

Future Classic: 1991-94 Nissan Sentra SE-R originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Apr 2007 09:34:00 EST. Why Miami? We don't know either, but ignoring the hard bodies, mojitos and other stereotypes of this great proboscis into the Atlantic, the question to be answered is this: does the new Sentra SE-R live up to its predecessors or is it simply an econobox with a red seatbelt? We were invited to the Homestead Speedway to find out.
Continue reading First Drive: Sentra SE-R Spec V

First Drive: Sentra SE-R Spec V originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Mar 2007 15:28:00 EST. While the headlamps and taillights have been revised with new housings, the most striking change was the addition of a power dome that eschews the two creases that formerly flanked both sides hood.

So what could possibly justify such a change? Why, more power, naturally. Nissan's venerable VQ35, 3.5-liter V6 is now producing 306 HP, which doesn't seem like a substantial increase over the last model's 300 HP, until you take into account that new output calculations have recently been adopted. As it turns out the same engine that's fitted to the new G35 and the 350Z is making between 15 and 20 HP more than the outgoing 2006 models, which should easily be felt by even the numbest backside.

The increase in power is mainly due to revisions made to the variable valve timing on the exhaust side of the valvetrain, allowing the new engine to rev past the 7k redline of former models, all the way up to a newly set 7,500 RPM.

This new engine will also find a home in the new Altima and <strike>Maxima</strike>, as well as the Altima coupe, which should make Nissan's new entry-level two-door one of the great performance bargains of 2007.

More pics of the 350Z's new exterior bits and interior are posted after the jump.

[Source: Nissan and Kicking Tires]
Continue reading Nissan quietly drops new VQ in 350Z

Nissan quietly drops new VQ in 350Z originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Dec 2006 09:55:00 EST. Bathed in "look-at-me" yellow and donning NISMO-grade 17-inch rollers, the SE-R looks the biz for its segment.

Power is expected to come from a 2.5-liter inline four, which should be producing something in the neighborhood of 190+ HP. No word yet on suspension, braking or transmission options, but we'd suspect that everything will get a through tweaking to justify its SE-R designation.

More info will be forthcoming on Wednesday. Especially when modded out in S- or R-tune, the SE-R Spec V was a capable backroad carver and a suitable daily driver.

As expected, Nissan has announced that their newest hot-rod Sentra is on its way and will make its debut later this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Available in both SE-R and SE-R Spec V trim, the latter getting a high-output version of Nissan's 2.5-liter inline four, with power likely being directed via a six-speed manual gearbox. We'd expect power output of the new vehicle to be somewhere in the 180 to 185 HP range, with torque coming in around 190 ft.-lbs. For those of you disenfranchised by the torque output of similar naturally aspirated offerings (I'm talking to you Civic Si), rest assured that Nissan always brings the twist.

The full press release is available after the jump.
Continue reading Nissan Sentra SE-R to debut in L.A.

Nissan Sentra SE-R to debut in L.A. originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 04 Nov 2006 16:18:00 EST. Rather, it's part of Nissan's clever marketing campaign for the new Sentra, which goes a fair bit beyond the traditional TV and print ads. In order to attract attention to its newest small car offering, Nissan stuffed a Sentra with aspiring comedian Mark Horowitz and told him his new address for the next seven days would be wherever he could find a parking spot. There were rules by which the young Horowitz, who appears to be the love child of Dane Cook and Napolean Dynamite, would have to abide if he were to get paid at the end of the week, which include the following...

Must live 7 straight days out of the Sentra. He is free to come and go from the Sentra.

Must not return to his apartment at any point during the 7 days.

Must assume his normal day-to-day responsibilities, including work and scheduled meetings.

Must personally prepare at least 4 meals within the immediate vicinity of the Sentra.

Must go on at least one date. Hopefully more.

Must not let anyone else drive his car during the 7 days.

Must sleep in a different location each night. Once the location is chosen he must not move.

Must not set foot outside of the car for any reason from 12am - 5am.

Must host at least one "social function" in the Sentra.

Must maintain the highest standards of personal hygiene.

Aside from producing a quirky marketing campaign, we're pretty sure FOX could turn this into a sweet reality show. The rules gaurantee that Horowitz won't make it through the week easy, and indeed he doesn't. Fortunately, he blogged about his travails on this site, as well as produced a series of videos so we could watch him fumble through the week. Nissan let us have at the newest video that isn't officially released yet, in which we discover that meter maids don't care about Nissan's goofy marketing schemes when they're writing parking tickets. Yeah, we've tried the whole, "I'm part of a marketing campaign for a major automaker, I have to park in the fire zone" excuse before too, it doesn't work.

We also discovered that Nissan has already entered the world of Second Life to market the new Sentra, whereas we reported yesterday that Pontiac was planning to give away free land in the game starting sometime in November. We like Nissan's presence in the virtual world of Second Life more because it set up a virtual dealership and is giving away Sentras free in the game! The Second Life presence ties in with the Horowitz thing as well, since you can watch all of the comedian's web videos inside Second Life while choosing the color for your free Sentra (Check out Nissan's press release after the jump for details on nabbing on your Second Life Sentra).

[Source: Nissan]
Continue reading Man survives 7 Days in a Sentra

Man survives 7 Days in a Sentra originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Oct 2006 16:27:00 EST. That cost of entry includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that musters 140 horsepower and 6-speed manual transmission. Four other models are available including the Sentra 2.0 with CVT ($15,550), Sentra 2.0S with 6-speed manual ($15,650), Sentra 2.0S with CVT ($16,450) and Sentra 2.0SL with CVT ($18,400). The 2.0-liter four is the only engine available, that is, until the Sentra SE-R returns with a more potent mill for performance enthusiasts. If you're interested in the standard Sentra, however, it's available as of today.

Nissan's full press release can be found after the jump...

[Source: Nissan]
Continue reading Nissan prices the new Sentra from $14,750

Nissan prices the new Sentra from $14,750 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Oct 2006 17:04:00 EST. Wasn't that generous of him? Anyway, the 2007 Sentra was first shown at the Detroit Auto Show way back in January. It had been so long since the last Sentra makeover that it was the only sedan left in the lineup that didn't look like an Altima. Well, they fixed that. The Maxima, Altima, <strike>Sentima</strike> Sentra now look like the same car in three different sizes. Not that there's anything wrong with that, unless you dislike the look of one of them in which case you'll probably dislike all three. Looks aside, this seems to be a huge improvement for Nissan going up against the Corolla and Civic.

The new C-platform promised a larger, more refined and quieter package, and it appears Nissan has delivered. In fact, the new one is "so much better than the outgoing model, comparisons are pointless," according to Joe. As we've come to expect with all-new vehicle introductions, the new Sentra offers a bigger cabin and there is added sophistication showing itself in a "church quiet" cabin, among other things.

A new, larger 2.0-liter four should provide around 135 hp and 140 pounds of torque, and your choice of 6-speed manual or CVT transmissions put the power to the pavement. While not perfect, the manual seemed to be better than the CVT when it came to smoothness and noise. But not on gas mileage. The CVT is rated 29/36 mpg (city/highway), while the manual rates 28/34. Brakes were adequate if a bit disappointing in Nissan's choice of rear drums.

Surprisingly quiet with a good ride, decent handling, fairly smooth power and a good set of standard features should all help the Sentra gain some ground against the competition, especially with pricing that starts around $15,000. Personally, we'll wait for the SE-R variant to be introduced.

[Source: Kicking Tires]
First impressions of Nissan Sentra originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Oct 2006 20:04:00 EST. While the supercars of the world are currently battling it out between 600 and 1,000 horsepower, economy cars are waging war between 200 and 300 horsepower. While we have no information on how much power the next generation Nissan Sentra SE-R will produce, we'll tell Nissan straight up it's going to need at least 225-250 ponies to compete. These spy shots show the Sentra in SE-R trim with the obligatory revised front and rear fascias plus side sills. Larger wheels and some massive rotors are also part of the package. The power bar has been raised by the 250-hp MazdaSpeed3 and 300-hp Dodge Caliber SRT-4.
$28,050. That's the price of entry for Nissan's new-for-2007 Maxima. That coin will get buyers a Max in base 3.5 SE spec, which includes the automaker's evergreen VQ engine, good here for 255 horsepower, tied to the company's Xtronic CVT transmission with manual override. The six-speed manual appears to be a casualty of the upgrade, continuing Nissan's trend of moving the Maxima away from its role as "The Four Door Sports Car" to that of a near-luxury player.

Those with a bit more largesse may wish to opt for the 3.5SL ($30,300), which includes new 'wood-tone' interior accents, heated leather seats, and 18" seven-spoke alloys, among other niceties.

The affected vehicles, built during the first five months of this year, could eventually run low on oil which can result in catastrophic engine damage, or even fires. Up to 100,000 vehicles are thought to be affected, and so far there have been 215 complaints of oil consumption and 17 reports of fires. The majority of the reported problems are said to have occurred in rental fleets.

Nissan is recommending that owners check their oil on a regular basis, which is good advice for anybody, regardless of what brand they drive. Given the most vehicles don't consume any oil between changes, though, we can see how this problem can catch less-than-attentive owners by surprise.
