Global RallyCross is an interesting motorsport. Beginning in 2010 at the X Games, the series races on short tracks made partly of asphalt and partly of dirt, along with a signature variation called the Joker Lap, in which drivers are required to take an alternate, slightly longer route that generally incorporates a 70-foot gap jump.

The final event for the 2012 season took place just across the street from the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, and those of us covering the event for Autoblog scored a birds-eye view of the track from our hotel rooms. Fortunately for those who weren't able to attend, X Games decided to upload the entire final to YouTube.

For those keeping track, Tanner Foust took the victory, clinching the Global RallyCross Championship for the second year in a row. The race had to be restarted after Ken Block's car started billowing ominous-looking black smoke from underhood.

If you're interested, GoPro stitched together a brief video reel of highlights, along with some skate footage from an empty pool, from driver Bucky Lasek. Both videos are available for your viewing pleasure down below.

UPDATE: We've also added a video from Driving Sports showing RallyCross action in slow motion.
Continue reading Global RallyCross comes to Vegas with SEMA [UPDATE]

Global RallyCross comes to Vegas with SEMA [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Nov 2012 20:00:00 EST.
We don't remember the last time we heard the phrase "cafe racer" applied to a car, but we'll get to see just such a beast at this week's SEMA show. Fiat is applying the cafe racer philosophy to a 500, which means chopping it, dropping it and stripping the lightweight machine down even further, "Taking it down to the essence of what you need to drive a car."

You can watch the story in the video below. We'll have lots of pictures of the real thing from Las Vegas in just a few days.
Continue reading Fiat readying stripped-down 500 Cafe Racer concept for SEMA

Fiat readying stripped-down 500 Cafe Racer concept for SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Oct 2012 09:45:00 EST.
The Fisker Karma is again going where no pricey, Finnish-built, extended-range electric hybrid sedan has gone before: SEMA. Since the Karma just about touches the ground as is, and already wears enormous wheels, the aftermarket mods - for this year at least - stick to exterior treatments.

The two Karmas that will greet the Vegas audience have been developed to commemorate Fisker's partnerships aftermarket companies, those partnerships giving owners more ways to customize their vehicles. One Karma will get wrapped in a new color scheme each day with 3M Scotchprint wrap featuring the co-developed Fisker Diamond Protection Film.

The protection film does exactly what it says on the label, keeping the Karma's finish from getting bruised by road detritus. Show-goers can watch each of the wraps being applied: the Fall-themed Gloss Burnt Orange and Brushed Black Metallic "October Sun," the Riverside in Matte White and Gloss Blue Metallic throwing a shout-out to American racing heritage, hot-rodders get "Classic" Hot Rod Red red and a Gloss Black stripe with brushed aluminum trim, and "Onward" wears Satin Black and Gloss Burnt Orange to celebrate Fisker itself.

The second Karma will be the Mobil 1 "American Icon" at the DUB stand, draped in Gloss Sterling Silver and Matte Blue Metallic. In lieu of a new wheel design, a new wheel finish will be shown on both Karmas, that being Goodrich's chrome-like PermaStar coating. You'll find the press release below and an advance screening of the color schemes in the high-res gallery above.
Continue reading Even Fisker is attending SEMA with some custom Karmas

Even Fisker is attending SEMA with some custom Karmas originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 13:31:00 EST.
Small cars are going to be well represented at the 2012 SEMA Show from numerous automakers, but Chevrolet just released eight Vegas-bound concepts that we'll be able to see next week. While the Cruze, Sonic and Spark have all helped bolster Chevy's small-car cred, the Malibu has helped the automaker compete in the family-friendly midsize class, and now the Bowtie brand is looking to show some of the customization potential for all of these popular cars.

Perhaps one of the most eye-catching concepts that Chevy has teased so far, the Malibu Turbo Performance Concept might focus more on styling than power, but it still shows how cool the new Malibu can look. Some of the concept's features include a sporty-looking body kit, clear-lensed LED taillights, rear spoiler and a stunning set of 20-inch wheels. Although it keeps the same 259-horsepower turbo engine under the hood, it does add a few bits that could help the car's performance with upgraded suspension and brakes and a cold-air intake system.

Taking this Malibu Concept's aggressive styling and scaling it down quite a bit, the Spark Sinister concept also shows how far the car's design can be taken. Once you get past the car's color scheme and excessive use of Chevy bowties, the Spark Sinister still has a nasty look to it with its sporty front fascia, 18-inch wheels, funky side sill add-ons and a massive rear wing. Chevy will also have a couple other Sparks on display such as "The Color Run" Spark which is the official pace car of The Color Run (a unique 5K where participants get covered in various colors after each kilometer) and the "Pink Out" Spark Cancer Awareness Concept bringing more attention to the fight against breast cancer.

Chevy will also have the Cruze Upscale at SEMA which will focus on an interior decked-out in leather but will also have some performance enhancements such as the adjustable coil-over suspension and upgraded brakes. Even the Sonic will get into the SEMA frenzy with a few different Z-Spec concepts to show just how far this small car can be tricked out.

Not to be left out, Chevy will also be unveiling concept versions of the rest of its car lineup including the Camaro, Corvette and the new 2014 Impala. The Impala concept is simply a flashier version of the production car that goes on sale early next year with a red paint job, 20-inch wheels and black ice chrome accents on the inside; Chevy is keeping the Camaro and Corvette SEMA concepts a secret until the show.
Continue reading Chevy cars highlight GM's fleet of custom SEMA concepts

Chevy cars highlight GM's fleet of custom SEMA concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 10:45:00 EST.
Hyundai has already released renderings of its Cosworth-tuned Genesis Coupe that will be on display at the 2012 SEMA Show, and with the show just a couple more weeks away, Hyundai is now teasing a souped-up Veloster headed to Las Vegas. The Hyundai Veloster Turbo Velocity concept was designed at Hyundai's America Technical Center in Irvine, CA to be a street car that is also trackable.

To start, Hyundai had the Veloster Turbo's stock engine sent off to Cosworth for new internal components, turbocharger, intercooler, intake manifold and engine controller, and it was finished off with a custom exhaust system. The result gives the Velocity concept more than 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet. To handle the track, Hyundai also upgraded the car's suspension and brakes.

SEMA concepts are known for their flashy, over-the-top designs, and the Velocity will not disappoint with its wide body kit, a massive rear wing and a white-painted roof that gives the car a custom chopped look. Intending to prove this concept is ready for the track, the Velocity also comes with a full roll bar, data acquisition hardware and racing harnesses.
We'll have live images of the Veloster Turbo Velocity concept for you in a couple weeks, but until then, Hyundai has included a press release and a quick video of its SEMA-bound concept that we've posted below.
Continue reading Hyundai creates 400-HP Veloster Turbo Velocity concept for SEMA [w/video]

Hyundai creates 400-HP Veloster Turbo Velocity concept for SEMA [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Oct 2012 17:58:00 EST.
Chrysler is taking on the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas in a big way, with a sprawling 15,300 square-foot display encompassing a total of 24 modified vehicles. We got a chance to preview some of those creations, including the plucky little Fiat 500C you see above. Designers decided to take a page from the West Coast custom scene with unique widebody fender flares. The 500 Beach Cruiser sits a full foot wider front and rear thanks in part to a set of prototype aluminum wheels. We dig on the louvers and the wooden surfboard rack, too (though with the canvas lid slid back, we're guessing it'd make for some interesting tan lines).

Of course, it wouldn't be a Mopar booth without at least one outrageous engine swap. The Dodge Charger Juiced fills that role this year with a Viper V10 crate engine worth a full 650 horsepower. Other stars include the Chrysler 300 Luxury, with its unique True Blue Pearl paint and Katzkin leather interior, as well as the 392-powered Urban Ram and carbon-fiber laden Dodge Dart Carbon Fire (which appears to be nearly identical to the car we showed you in spy shots last week). You can check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading Chrysler previews SEMA showcars

Chrysler previews SEMA showcars originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 12:45:00 EST.
With the SEMA Show kicking off later this month, some automakers have already started showing off their Vegas-bound show cars, and now Ford is getting into the mix with a quartet of tricked-out 2013 Ford Fusion concepts. Ford will be unveiling "dozens" of cars at SEMA, but these custom Fusions give a glimpse of the tuning/styling potential of Ford's new midsize sedan.

While show cars at SEMA are generally flashy and over the top, the 2013 Fusion by Tjin Edition is a relatively subtle car. In the past, Tjin Edition Fords have also included the Explorer and Mustang GT, but the Tjin Edition Fusion has been upgraded with a custom paint job that actually makes beige look good to go with 21-inch wheels and new headlights and fog lights featuring LED accents. To give the car more performance, this Fusion also received an upgraded turbo on its 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and a side-exit MagnaFlow exhaust system. Another restrained show car is the 3dCarbon - Air Design Fusion, which in all likelihood is the most realistic version with its lower body kit that augments the car's already sporty styling.

Looking to mimic the style of cars in the Australian V8 Supercar Series, the Ice Nine Group have the 2013 Fusion looking far better than next year's NASCAR Sprint Cup car decked out with a lowered stance, large rear wing and an eye-catching Monster Energy Drink paint job. The 2013 Fusion by MRT Performance also has an in-your-face appearance with its punishing black-and-blue paint scheme, but it, too, is modified for performance with an Eco-Flow exhaust system and enhanced chassis tuning.

Scroll down for the full press release on these cars, and be sure to check out our live coverage of the show which runs from October 30 through November 2.
Continue reading Ford shows off SEMA-bound Fusion specials

Ford shows off SEMA-bound Fusion specials originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Oct 2012 15:29:00 EST.
Hyundai is gearing up for this year's SEMA Show in a big way. The Korean automaker has partnered up with Cosworth to develop a special Genesis Coupe. The Cosworth CGRS Concept boasts a 389-horsepower version of the factory 3.8-liter, direct-injection V6. That's a respectable jump of 41 horsepower over the stock six cylinder, and the additional power comes courtesy of a Cosworth intake and exhaust, new engine control parameters and improved thermal management. A Cosworth big brake system and suspension help keep the coupe pointed in the right direction. This is SEMA, however, which means the coupe also gets a slathering of interior and exterior tweaks.

Inside, Cosworth served up a steering wheel, shift knob, pedals, shift boot and sports seats, while slathering the vehicle's body in satin and gloss blue paint. The stock front fascia was ditched in favor of a new piece with integrated carbon fiber brake ducts. Speaking of the composite, Cosworth whipped up a front splitter, side skirt, rear diffuser and trunk lid spoiler from the stuff just for this car. Look for the Cosworth Genesis Coupe to debut at the SEMA Show next month. Until then, check out the full press release below.
Continue reading Cosworth, Hyundai building Genesis Racing Series concept for SEMA

Cosworth, Hyundai building Genesis Racing Series concept for SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Oct 2012 07:59:00 EST.
SEMA is right around the corner, folks, and that means a whole slew of custom auto builders are working furiously to finish project cars in time for their Vegas introductions. One of the coolest is bound to come from ICON. Based on a 1965 Dodge D200 crew cab that previously saw use by the U.S. military, we fully expect ICON's latest to be in the running for best-of-show.

Underneath the customized vintage bodywork will sit a chassis borrowed from a much more recent Ram 3500 fitted with a 4.5-inch suspension lift kit. A Banks-modified Cummins turbodiesel with six inline cylinders displacing 5.9 liters will reportedly pump out 975 pound-feet of torque. That's the kind of get-up-and-go we can get behind.

Only one of these machines is currently being built, painted in white with black accents and wheels. The interior is sewn up from free-range bison leather and is outfitted with a high-end stereo system, according to Fox News. This one is headed to an anonymous client, and we're jealous. Very jealous.
ICON will debut '65 Dodge pickup project at SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Oct 2012 10:15:00 EST.
There is little doubt that the darling of this year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas will be the Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S twins. Stillen is one of many aftermarket tuners hoping to capitalize on the popularity of these two cars, and, in addition to developing performance parts like a cold-air intake, cat-back exhaust, big brake kit and sway bars, will reveal its first body kit for the FR-S in November at the big show in Vegas. The thing is, while Stillen is working on the performance parts, it wants you to design the body kit.

Stillen is now accepting submissions for a contest to design its new FR-S body kit, and what we like in particular about this competition is that you don't have to be a professional designer to win. Stillen is providing the templates to work with, so all you have to do is draw or render what you think the kit should look like from various angles. The contest rules say not to worry if you don't render 3-D objects for a living; judging will be done on shape and design rather than how well you can arrange 1s and 0s.

Submissions will be accepted until August 14th, after which Stillen will choose the top five entries and let the winner be decided by popular vote on Facebook. That person will get a two-night trip to Vegas to attend the SEMA Show in person where his/her design will be unveiled before it goes on sale to the public.
Stillen wants you to design its FR-S body kit originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jul 2012 10:00:00 EST.
By and large, the machines created for the SEMA show in Las Vegas are built for lounging around under convention center lights and not much else. All those go-fast parts we see bolted on do little more than collect lustful stares from from the crowd. But Creations n' Chrome set out to discover just what their bolt on additions to its Ford Mustang were good for. Under the outrageous 3dCarbon bodykit sits a Vortech supercharged 5.0-liter V8 good for around 580 horsepower at 8 psi of boost on stock internals. KW served up a set of Variant 3 coilovers, and Hotchkis took care of front and rear sway bars.

The crew rolled the blown Mustang out the to the Mojave Mile for a top speed run. The machine racked up a final velocity of 182.4 mph, though the final seconds of the run looked anything but stable (we hear there was a 20 mph crosswind). Still, we're impressed at the machine's performance. For perspective, the Boss 302 is only good for 155 mph. Check out the video for yourself below.
Continue reading This SEMA show car goes 182.4 mph

This SEMA show car goes 182.4 mph originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2012 17:00:00 EST.
The suspensions are lowered, the dubs are mounted and the votes are tabulated: with the SEMA show in full swing, organizers have announced their top pics for the show.

Rather than name the top tuned cars, the SEMA Awards name the best cars for tuning, in several categories. And so, the winners of the second annual SEMA Awards are...

The hottest car overall is awarded to the Chevrolet Camaro (like the Hot Wheels concept pictured above), the hottest sport-compact is the Fiat 500, the hottest SUV goes to the Jeep Wrangler, and the hottest truck has been named as the Ford F-Series.

All the award recipients are domestics, save for the Fiat 500, and even that is effectively a Chrysler product made in Mexico. So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Now crack open your aftermarket parts catalogs and have at 'em.
Winners of second annual SEMA Awards announced originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Nov 2011 09:45:00 EST.
As popular as their vehicles are with aftermarket customizers, Ford wouldn't miss out on something like the SEMA show. And while the Mustang and various Ford trucks play a big role in the Blue Oval booth this year, a significant part of the Motor Company's exposition centers around the latest Focus.

All-in-all, seven Focus models are on display this year. 3dCarbon has busted one out in a white matte finish with tinted windows and red accents, plus roof spoiler, Eibach springs and Pirelli rubber. Roush has brought out a Stage 3 upgraded Focus complete with supercharger, custom induction and exhaust systems and body kit. The ID Agency is bridging the gap between Japanese and European tuner trends with its dark green model, packing Magnaflow exhaust, Brembo brakes, Recaro seats and even a Thule bike rack.

The only sedan among all the hatchback versions has been done up by Capaldi Racing, with a Borla exhaust, Torsen diff, AST suspension and a big orange splitter jutting out the front. Steeda's Focus hatchback packs an aftermarket intake, sway back and springs, with an engine bay filled with billet aluminum-style components and 19-inch monoblock alloys with Nitto rubber.

Bojix Design's Stage 2 show car has been done up (like the 3dCarbon and Roush models) in white, black and red, with a full aero kit, 20-inch wheels on H&R suspension packing AP Racing brakes and a full leather and Alcantara interior. Finally, COBB Tuning (best known for its Subaru work) has gone with a racing approach, complete with turbocharger, intercooler, upgraded breathing apparati, reworked suspension, and super-sized brakes.

You can check 'em all out in our high-res gallery of live images from the show floor, the factory-released renderings in the gallery below and the details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Ford Focus hatches wicked tuner concepts

Ford Focus hatches wicked tuner concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 13:45:00 EST.
Kia has teamed up with Antenna magazine to create a special surf-themed concept for this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas. The publication turned its attention to the 2012 Kia Rio 5-Door. With a special sunset-metallic paint, custom gold wheels and a wooden front splitter, there's no mistaking the machine as a run-of-the-mill Rio.

Inside, the vehicle has been fitted with a special '80s gaming console as well as a vinyl record player and shelves for shoes and swimsuits. Oddly enough, there's no surf rack on top for transporting your boards to and from the beach.

If this isn't the pure essence of SEMA, we don't know what is. We're a little concerned about the thought that went into putting the record player below the shoe shelves as sand and LPs don't typically hang out at the same bar...
Ford is hitting SEMA with a volley of modified Focus and Fiesta models this year. The company says that the aftermarket show is the perfect venue for showing off just how customizable both vehicles can be, and with creations from the likes of Roush, Cobb Tuning and Gold Coast Automotive among others, there should be a hatch or sedan on hand in Las Vegas for everyone. Roush is doing what the company does best: plopping an R900 TVS Supercharger on top of the four-cylinder engine in the Focus for a substantial bump in power, and a full Roush exhaust ensures that the engine will breathe easy.

Cobb Tuning, meanwhile, will be going the turbocharging route with its Focus. The car will boast forged pistons, a custom turbo kit and front-mounted intercooler, as well as a unique air box, intake and exhaust manifold. No one's saying just how much power the Focus will make, but a StopTech Trophy big brake kit should ensure the car can be brought down from speed in a hurry.

The star of the Fiesta show this year will likely be from Gold Coast Automotive. With an intercooled Jackson Racing Rotrex supercharger, Wilwood braking hardware on all four corners and a custom front diffuser and rear spoiler, this GCA entrant could be the mightiest Fiesta of them all. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Ford Focus and Fiesta to be well represented at SEMA

Ford Focus and Fiesta to be well represented at SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 16:14:00 EST.
On this day in 1901, Henry Ford took his home-built race car named "Sweepstakes" and entered a 10-mile race at the Detroit Driving Club against the favored Alexander Winton. Ford ended up winning the race and the victory garnered attention from investors that would help launch the Ford Motor Company just a couple of years later. Since that first race, Ford has achieved a multitude of successes in a variety of motorsports including wins at the Daytona 500, Indy 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, Baja 1000 and more.

As part of their celebration of 110 years of racing, Ford will be bringing together some of their more historic race cars to display at the upcoming SEMA show in Las Vegas next month. The lineup is truly impressive, including the Le Mans-winning 1967 GT40 MkIV, Parnelli Jones' 1970 Mustang Boss 302, Jim Clark's Lotus that won the 1965 Indy 500, various John Force Funny Cars and the winning race car from this year's Daytona 500 just to name a few.

Next month, we'll bring you live coverage of the historic display of Ford Racing cars as well as the rest of the 2011 SEMA extravaganza. Until then, follow the jump to read more about Ford's 110-year racing history.
Continue reading Ford to celebrate 110 years of racing heritage at SEMA

Ford to celebrate 110 years of racing heritage at SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 18:00:00 EST. If we were to show you all the vehicles that saw coverage here on Autoblog over the past three days from the 2010 SEMA Show, you'd be looking at 105 (seriously!) thumbnail images below. We aren't going to subject you to all of that... instead, here are some highlights and lowlights from Las Vegas. Most of what you see here represents what we'd consider the best of the bunch, and mostly for obvious reasons. Plus, we added a few machines down at the bottom that fall into the exact opposite bucket... but you're free to disagree with our assessment, of course, in the Comments below.

We've showcased many of the major automakers' one-off customizations specifically for the tuner crowd here at SEMA, but the vast majority of the show is populated by companies specializing in technology, performance upgrades, and of course, wheels. After all, when it comes to beautifully designed supercars, why mess with success by adding a body kit or even more power when you can personalize your go-fast machine with a set of unique, eye-catching wheels.

That said, the SEMA show is chocked full of companies who will sell you incomprehensible amounts of custom wheels, and we've pointed out cameras at a slew of supercars riding on modified rollers. See the lot in our high-res image gallery, below.

Lingenfelter has a surprise tucked away for the visitors at this year's SEMA show. Sitting alone in a corner of the company's booth sits a near-production version of the LTA. Coated in orange and wearing one very awesome shaker hood, the car is a fitting tribute to Firebirds of old. Even those honeycomb wheels make us want to throw some Rush on the stereo and do smoky burnouts in the high school parking lot. That front splitter integrated into the fascia does look a bit cartoonish to our eyes, but hey, you certainly can't win them all.

Fortunately, the 455 cubic-inch engine should help you forget all about the funky nose with its 655 horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque. Rapid acceleration will do that for you.

Behold the 2011 Dodge Durango Citadel "Black and Tan" - a seven-passenger machine built for what the guys and girls at Mopar call the "distinguished SUV enthusiast." We're not sure we'd ever put ourselves under that banner, but this mean-looking people-mover is absolutely our cup of tea. Riding on a set of Mopar lowering springs and some massive, 22-inch custom wheels, the Citadel is the rolling embodiment of understated aggression.

A scant few chrome accents are scattered around the vehicle, including the textured grille up front and the dual exhaust tips out back. Speaking of the exhaust, Corsa pipes help the engine breathe a little better. We're guessing they also give the Citadel a more commanding sound, too. Check it out for yourself in our gallery of live images.
