After watching the hilarious video from the guys at Automobile trying to use the self-parking feature on the new Lexus LS460, this video is truly amazing. For a measly $249, the crew at Mindstorms NXT will sell you a complete kit to build an SPC (self-parking car) of your own.

The SPC will detect a space large enough to park, perform all steps necessary to successfully complete the often difficult task of parallel parking, and then with a verbal "GO!" pull out of the spot on to the road, only slightly tapping the "car" in front on the way out.

What a great way to entertain friends and family at the Christmas party this year; just be sure there aren't any LS460 drivers in the audience!

Thanks to David Yu for the tip!

Some very impatient staff over at Automobile Magazine put that claim to the test in this video, which shows three men first parking the Lexus LS460 on their own in the magazine's parking lot, and then again with the Advanced Parking Guidance System. We'll let you watch the video to see how the Three Stooges fair against the computer power of a Lexus, but one of the two almost manages to take out a minivan and a Ford Five-Hundred.

Thanks for the tip, Scott!

[Source: FQuick]
VIDEO: Self-parking Lexus befuddles Automobile editors originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Dec 2006 11:33:00 EST.
The Lexus LS460 is a technophile's dream car -- it hosts the first eight-speed transmission, a rear-view camera, 19-speaker Mark Levinson stereo and hard disk drive to store 4,000 songs... and it parks itself. CNBC's Phil LeBeau shows us how "hands-free" is really done in the video above.

We've chatted with fellow automotive journalists about the self-parking feature, and most have not been impressed -- and by their accounts, what you see in the video is the best-case scenario. By the time the driver lines up the car correctly, confirms the space in which the car is to be parked, and presses go, the drivers in the cars lined up behind him will be out of patience faster than you can say, "Weren't you supposed to learn this crap in driver's ed?"
