With its well-deserved reputation for high design, it is not particularly surprising to see Jaguar reaching outside of the automotive realm for future inspiration. To that end, the British automaker recently enlisted the talents of students at the Royal College of Art to create a piece of forward-looking, automotive-inspired sculpture.

The result of this project can be seen above; a sculpture created by RCA students Claire Miller and Ewan Gallimore, and unveiled to a small audience to kick off London's Clerkenwell Design Week. The spare and rather elegant form created by the talented pair absolutely harkens back to coupes from Jaguar's past as well as its present (read: F-Type) without aping any one model particularly.

In a press release, the artists had this to say about the work: "Our form relates to the Jaguar brand through its sculptural volumes, bespoke materials and visual lightness. These elements helped us to create a sculpture that aimed to display a seamless transition between interior and exterior space." Get a better look at the Jaguar artwork in the gallery above, or read through the press release, which follows.
Continue reading Jaguar sculpture by RCA design students is a minimal beauty

Jaguar sculpture by RCA design students is a minimal beauty originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 May 2013 09:14:00 EST.
We're not going to say this is the creepiest thing you'll see all day. After all, if the internet is good for anything, it's freaking us the hell out.

A Czech artist in London has crafted a unique tribute to the 2012 Olympic Games by building a double-decker bus with massive human arms. The machine is cursed to a life of doing push-ups for the rest of eternity by its creator David Cerny, who says he chose the exercise because it is common to all sports and every athlete from every walk of life.

As if seeing a double-decker bus with human limbs isn't disturbing enough, the 1957 people-mover moans in exertion with every press. We'll be seeing this one in our nightmares. You, however, can check it out in the video below.

The installation, dubbed "London Booster" is currently installed outside of the Business Design Center in London.
Continue reading Watch an Olympic double-decker bus do pushups

Watch an Olympic double-decker bus do pushups originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 19:59:00 EST.
Sure, we think of Chevrolet as an American automaker. One of the most American, at that. But its eponymous founder wasn't born in these United States. He was born in Switzerland. La Chaux-de-Fonds, to be exact, and so to celebrate the brand's 100th centenary, it has commissioned a local artist to erect a statue of Louis Chevrolet in his hometown's Parc de l'Ouest.

The giant polished steel bust was created by budding artist Christian Gonzenbach, whose design was selected by an international jury from among four finalists. Measuring five meters (16.4 feet) tall, the oversize bust was commissioned by General Motors and will remain in the park as a permanent tribute to the man whose name has become an international fixture in the automotive industry and a veritable household name.
Pirelli teamed up with tattoo artist Scott Campbell for a special project at the tire manufacturer's newest flagship store in Milan, Italy. Campbell turned his skill with a needle and ink to tire sculpting. Using a gouge, the artist inscribed images of an eye, a heart and a skull into the tread of a Diablo Rosso II tire that was then fitted to a special-edition Ducati Diavel on display at the Corso Venezia store. Those same designs were also featured on a unique Dianese riding jacket alongside an image of St. Christopher, who is apparently the patron saint of motorcycle riders (who knew?).

Campbell said that this project actually marked the first time he had ever worked with rubber as a medium, and that the project required a substantial amount of research before he ever put tool to tread. The finished product doesn't look too bad for a rookie effort, if you ask us. Hit the jump to check out a quick video of the Diavel and its fancy footwear.
Continue reading Pirelli teams up with Scott Campbell for tire tattoo art [w/video]

Pirelli teams up with Scott Campbell for tire tattoo art [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 08:58:00 EST. Jaguar E-type sculpture for 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed - Click above for high-res gallery

Every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed selects one automaker as its featured marque and commissions a unique sculpture in its honor. With the iconic Jaguar E-Type celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Goodwood has picked Jaguar for the seat of prestige at this year's event, and this is the installation that will do the job.

Inspired by the E-Type's shape, rather than crafted from it as other sculptures have been in years past, this installation is made from half a kilometer of steel tubing made for gas pipelines. The material was supplied by Jaguar's sister company, Tata Steel, with each tube measuring nearly four feet in diameter with walls half an inch thick.

Like the pieces that preceded it, it was crafted by Goodwood's sculptor-in-residence Gerry Judah. All in all the piece stands over 90 feet tall and weighs 150 metric tons, took 10 days for a team of bridge-builders to install and will be displayed along with Jaguar's current range as well as the C-X75 turbine-hybrid concept car at the event.
Dutch artist Diedrich Kraaijeveld makes photorealistic sculptures of cars from painted pieces of wood. That's impressive enough, but here's the best part: Kraaijeveld's pieces are assembled from painted pieces of wood he scavenges and recycles. In other words, these perfectly color-matched and shaded collages take shape from scrap wood that Kraaijeveld gathers in specific colors.

Most of the pieces are made to replicate photographs, and almost none of them are started until Kraaijeveld has a glut of one color of wood. With the collection process taken care of, the forms of classic sports cars start to take shape. We're particularly fond of his Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Porsche 911.

According to Inhabitat, Kraaijeveld scavenges the wood from around his hometown in Holland and while on vacation in different parts of the world. Head over to Inhabitat to see more of Kraaijeveld's work.
Dutch artist makes automotive masterpieces from scrap wood originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 22 May 2011 15:33:00 EST. To call John DeLorean eccentric would be an understatement. Envisioning a stainless steel-bodied sports car with gullwing doors and actually bringing it to market requires no less a character.

The auto magnate had a flair for the extravagant, and to satisfy his tastes had a series of bas-relief sculptures created for his Manhattan apartment. There are ten pieces in all, some measuring up to four and a half feet across. They depict a variety of Roman-themed scenes, from children playing to a trio of nude soldiers, and are up for sale at prices ranging from $650 to $3,150. So if you don't have a modified DMC-12 to take you back in time to ancient Rome, at least you can have its creator's art collection to transport you there in your mind.

Ever get the feeling that your car is little more than an oversized toy? Lorenzo Quinn evidently did. The sculptor took the very first car he ever bought - an original Fiat 500 - and transformed it into the public display of art you see here.

The installation piece features a four-meter-tall child's hand and forearm, modeled after that of his own son and crafted out of aluminum, grabbing the Fiat like a giant kid playing with a toy car.

After being displayed in Abu Dhabi and Valencia, Spain, the sculpture has now been installed on Park Lane, a swanky stretch of road in central London characterized by a number of five-star hotels and high-end automobile dealerships. This certainly ought to put things into perspective for the next noble gentleman shopping for a new motor car.
There's no lack of automobiles created to date that you might categorize as rolling sculptures. Maybach's limousines may not be one of them, but the top-tier Daimler marque would like that to change, and to that end has sponsored a cooperative sculpture initiative.

The program revolves around the work of one Julian Schnabel, an American artist and filmmaker. The arrangement was announced during Art Basel week in Miami - the same location where Tesla unveiled its art car - and where Schnabel unveiled a piece entitled "Queequeq - The Maybach Sculpture" and auctioned off several of his works to benefit relief efforts still underway in Haiti. The sculpture is inspired by Moby Dick and named after the harpoon-thrower in the classic Melville novel.

Schnabel has also directed a film about Maybach, and an artistic development initiative will be undertaken by the artist and the automaker to mentor up-and-coming talent, while Maybach also announced a partnership with the Louvre in Paris whereby a rotating exhibit of sculptures will be displayed in the museum's glass pyramid. Follow the jump for all the details in the press release, and take a closer look at the Queequeq sculpture - which at 3,280 pounds weighs nearly as much as a Maybach itself - in the high-resolution image gallery below.

Though hood ornaments were once commonplace on high-end automobiles, they've all but completely gone the way of the dodo. Mercedes-Benz sedans still use the simple but iconic three-pointed star, and its upscale sister brand Maybach has its own Double-M. Some Bentley owners opt for the Flying B ornament, but the Jaguar leaping cat is even less common. Few carry the mantle as proudly as Rolls-Royce though.

The Spirit of Ecstasy has been the Rolls-Royce mascot for decades, and remains so today. Back in its heyday, though, Rolls dealers often displayed oversized sculptures - a couple of feet tall or more - of the Spirit in their showrooms. Afficionados, however, can still get these to display in their homes or offices thanks to an English studio called Priory Fine Arts.

Priory crafts replicas of the classic statuettes out of brass, optionally plated in silver or gold. You can get your hands on one for $3,150. The price is listed as negotiable, but the precious-metal leaf will undoubtedly add a few extra greenbacks. Have a closer look at the continuation sculptures - soon to celebrate the centenary of the 1911 original - in the gallery below, or follow the links to inquire about ordering your own.

Rolling sculpture is how you might describe the Infiniti Essence show car. When it was unveiled in Geneva last year it stole the show, and now the Japanese luxury marque is following up with a limited-edition sculpture of the car itself.

Crafted from resin by the same creative minds behind the Essence concept, the Essence sculpture will only be produced in a limited run of 300 examples, each fetching $300. The sculpture is transported and presented in a special case hand-crafted by Louis Vuitton, the luxury goods workshop that made the custom-fitted luggage for the concept car.

The sculpture will debut at the upcoming LA Auto Show before going on sale at infinitilifestyle.com in December, but you can get a closer look now by clicking the thumbnails below and following the jump for the full press release.

With such a strong focus on design, we knew it wouldn't be long before the Nissan Cube was transformed into some sort of life-size art project. And that's exactly what legendary celebrity tattoo artist Henry Hate has done, creating an ice sculpture that encompasses the edgy design of Nissan's econobox with tattoo art.

Not only is this Hate's first sculpture, it is the first sort of "ice tattoo." Normally, ice is chiseled and carved to stand alone as a unique sculpture, but in this case, elements of tattoo design have been carved into the large ice blocks that enclose the Cube. Colorful lighting has been placed around the base of the car as well, giving it a glowing effect that looks pretty darn cool at night.

The Cube ice sculpture is currently on display in London's South Bank, on display for the public until the warm weather melts the ice away. Can't make the trip to see it in person? Check out our gallery of high-res shots below, and click through the jump to read Nissan UK's official (short) press release.

Our initial reaction when laying eyes on the Camper Bike was, "Ah, there go necessity and invention hand-in-hand again..." But we were wrong. The Camper Bike - yes, with a fully working camper - is a "functional sculptural piece," which is to say, it's art.

Reading a little further, though, we began to wonder just what kind of art: paintings of it come with slogans like "Scaling the summit with the Motherland in your heart," and "Camping far out in the wilderness forges a revolutionary heart." We don't know if that makes this a propaganda piece, but we do know that riding a bike fitted with a camper, in the city, is plenty revolutionary. After that, it doesn't really matter where you go. Click the link for more on the visual candy that is the Camper Bike.

The first concept to be officially unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show is this, a sculpture by Mercedes-Benz that foretells the future of its vehicles - and specifically the CLS.

From the SLS AMG-inspired fascia to the overly blistered fenders clearly inspired by the recent E-Class coupe, the T2-style sculpture features two signature lines that are set to infect the rest of the Mercedes line-up in the near future.

According to officials, this stylistic exercise represents M-B's transition from its traditional wedge shape to a new, edgy art-deco design inspired by the '30s. Aesthetic fripperies aside, this is the future of the CLS, which we expect to see in full concept form later this year.

There isn't much to be found on artist Michel Collet, but it's probably enough to let his artworks speak for him. Collet sculpts objects that are intended to be the revealing details from vintage machinery, like a door from Stirling Moss' #722 Mercedes Gullwing, or a section from the grille of a 1961 Aston Martin Zagato.

They're small - just a few feet across and weighing 10 to 20 pounds, but still, some of them say so much. Take a gander for yourself in the gallery of images below.

One man's junk is... well, you know. Watching the shiny metal grommets roll through his auto recycling plant in Brisbane, Australia, James Corbett doesn't appear to know the word "junk" when it comes to cars. He takes all of those leftover bits and makes superbly detailed sculptures of mostly vintage racers and, of all things, animals. None of the parts are bent or altered to help make the pieces, either. Corbett even built a full-size car out of parts and stuck a flathead V8 in it, and he still takes it racing.

Corbett has an exhibit coming up in London this month and then takes his show to Palm Desert, CA next year. If you don't get a chance to see the real things, we suggest you have a well-worth-it look at the images in our gallery below.

Next to the Lexus LFA display at this week's Tokyo Motor Show is a separate room displaying brand-themed art. At first, we didn't bother going in, but we went back here on day two, and we're sure glad we did.

Inside, we found this amazing full-size transparent sculpture of Lexus' new $375,000 LFA supercar that was constructed by Scu Fujimoto, a noted Japanese architect. The sculpture was first displayed at the Milan Design Week earlier this year and is simply stunning to look at. What's most impressive is that details like the seats, instrument panel, engine, suspension, and transaxle can all be seen.

According to Lexus, the sculpture is constructed from transparent acrylic boards that have been sanded and polished.
Audi TT sculpture - click above for high-res gallery

It's not at all unusual for successive generations of a car line to grow larger the preceding edition. However, in an era where down-sizing is becoming more common, this is a bit absurd. Actually, the car shown here is a 33.5 foot long, 10-ton sculpture of the Audi TT coupe.

The giant TT has actually been around for several years now, debuting in Berlin in 2006 and having been shown in Beijing, Munich, and Hong Kong since then. The outsized work of art has now been brought to Audi's Ingolstadt headquarters as part of the centenial celebrations of the automaker. The sculpture has been placed in the center of a roundabout in Ingolstadt where it should pose absolutely no issues with driver distraction... right, guys? Check out the high-res gallery of images below, as well as the press release and a video of the sculpture being trucked in after the jump.

Gallery: Audi TT Sculpture

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading Audi gifts hometown with 10-ton TT as part of centennial celebration [w/VIDEO]

Audi gifts hometown with 10-ton TT as part of centennial celebration [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 11:30:00 EST.
Alistair Gibson's sculptures from F1 car parts - Click above for a gallery of images

Alistair Gibson spent 22 years in Formula 1 paddocks as a mechanic with teams like Benetton and BAR Honda. With decades of carbon fiber and shiny bits swimming in his head, it probably shouldn't come as a complete surprise that after leaving pit lane he has begun fabricating motorsports-influenced sculptures of fish.

Each fish has a body in carbon fiber and comes with a spec sheet detailing the specific parts added to it. The brown trout you see above has a tail fin made of floor stays and comes mounted on a plank from the underside of Jensen Button's 2006 Hungarian GP-winning car. The hammerhead shark has eyes from rear wheel tether gearbox side shrouds, and comes mounted on a gearbox pull rod - also from the 2006 Hungarian GP car.

There are no prices listed, but if you add Formula 1 pedigree, carbon fiber fabrication, F1 chassis parts, and the word "art," well, phrases like "their weight in gold" come to mind. If you're not in the art market right now, you can check out the gallery of sculptures, including a brown trout, hammerhead shark, mackerel, mako shark, and piranha, below.

Gallery: Alistair Gibson Sculptures

[Source: Carbon Art via Pistonheads]
Ex-F1 Mechanic Alastair Gibson brings racing materials to fish sculptures. Automotive body design is certainly art, but the expression tends to be curtailed by the demands of commerce. Design a car that leans too far towards pure art, and the market will reject it. The symbiosis of needs has served the automotive industry well for the past century. On the fringes are the folks who perpetrate art for art's sake against the automobile. Most of these works are less accessible, though sometimes, there's a consociation that successfully melds higher concept art with the automobile. We're not talking about growing grass on your Riviera here.

British artist Benedict Radcliffe has created a full size rendering of a Toyota Corolla, making the world a more surreal place. The work is essentially a line drawing of the car rendered in three dimensions. Cool. Radcliffe's previous wireframe Impreza was more in line with the pure art mindset, as the Corolla was commissioned for use in a video production. The white painted sculpture lends the photographs a surreal retouched look, and we're kind of bummed we weren't able to turn up the actual commercial, as the couple of shots of the car on set look impressive with the reflective black floor. We can't help but wonder what they chromakeyed behind it, too.

[Source: Skirmisher.org]

Gallery: Wireframe Corolla

I can see its ribs!
