It'll be a landmark running for the Indianapolis 500 later this month, as the event celebrates its 100th anniversary as the premier open-wheel racing event in America. All of which only gave some fans more reason to be ticked off when Donald Trump was announced as this year's pace car driver.

Annoyed by political implications detracting from the spirit of racing, many fans were up in arms when Trump was announced as the official pace car driver, evidently prompting the celebrity businessman and possible presidential candidate to change his plans. In his place, organizers at the Speedway have invited none other than A.J. Foyt to drive the Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible that will serve as the official pace car. As a four-time Indy 500 winner, Foyt is among the most decorated drivers ever to lap the Brickyard, and his nomination will surely come as more welcome news to the legions of open-wheel devotees.

In related news, two drivers better known for their formula racing activities overseas will make their Indy debuts at the 500 this year. One of them is Scott Speed, the last American to race in Formula One. Speed shifted over the NASCAR after things didn't pan out in F1, until Red Bull dropped his sponsorship last year. Given his experience in open wheels and oval tracks, Speed may find a new home at Indy.

Also making his Indy debut will be Ho-Pin Tung, who will become the first Chinese driver to contest the Indianapolis 500. Tung is a reserve/test driver for Renault F1 this season and has contested such feeder series as GP2, A1GP and Superleague Formula. Both he and Speed will be driving for Jay Penske's Dragon Racing team and will be eligible for the $5 million bonus available to drivers from outside the series should they overcome the insurmountable odds to claim the checkered flag and drink milk in victory lane.
A.J.
For most racing drivers, landing a deal with an outfit like Red Bull would be a dream. The energy drink company has one of the most advanced driver development programs in the world, and is responsible for (among countless other feeder series champs) newly crowned Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel's ascension. Scott Speed, however, apparently doesn't feel the love.

The F1 and NASCAR driver has been with Red Bull for seven years, entering F1 as the first American driver in years before returning Stateside to race stock cars, still under Red Bull's auspices. And now, according to SceneDaily, he's suing his patron and employer to the tune of $6.5 million.

The reason? Breach of contract. According to the suit filed in North Carolina Superior Court, Red Bull significantly cut Speed's salary - by some half-million bucks, according to the complaint - and further failed to provide the budget his team needed to mount a competitive challenge.

With the venerable Ford Crown Victoria on its way out, cabbies all across the country are being forced to come up with all kinds of solutions to their passenger-hauling needs. The Toyota Camry has a bit of favor with this crowd thanks to its roomy back seat, efficient drivetrain and inexpensive MSRP. Of course, all of that goes out of the window when you start talking about the NASCAR interpretation of the sedan. Red Bull recently decided to put one of its tri-oval terrors to work on the streets of Chicago as a cab, complete with none other than Scott Speed behind the wheel.

With a few additions like real headlights, brake lights, turning indicators and a license-plate bezel, the Number 82 Camry was handily transformed into a street legal machine. Speed spent the better part of a morning shuffling people around the streets of the Windy City in a blaze of tire smoke and V8 glory. It looks like plenty of fun, and we're guessing there will never be another cab ride quite like it. Still, we think we'd rather end up in the Cash Cab. Hit the jump to check out the video.
Despite having the best name in racing, the American driver is easy to forget. While drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve found great success in Formula One, Speed just dropped out of the bottom of the pinnacle racing series, and has continued to fall since. The former Scuderia Toro Rosso driver has finally landed at the bottom rungs of the American stock-car racing ladder, but he's preparing to race his way back up to the top.

The latest development sees Speed getting behind the wheel of a Toyota racing pick-up in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Thanks in (large) part to Speed's benefactor, Red Bull, he'll be joining the Bill Davis Racing line-up, making his debut with the team in Kansas later this month before moving on to ten more races this season in addition to a full calendar of ARCA races in the No.2 Toyota that's sponsored by...you guessed it, Red Bull. Speed will also have an experienced coach in his corner: Richard "Slugger" Labbe, whose previous pupils include the likes of Dale Jarrett, Michael Waltrip and Speed's fellow F1-NASCAR migrant Jacques Villeneuve. Even with all the support, we'll have to wait and see how Speed fares on the lower rungs of the American oval racing ladder.

As of today, the 24-year-old Californian has been replaced in his Scuderia Toro Rosso seat by former BMW test driver Sebastian Vettel. Vettel, a 20-year-old German, is highly regarded by STR half-owner Gerhard Berger, and will race in this week's Hungarian GP.

Speed's tenure has been a forgettable year-and-a-half of no results and more than a few skirmishes and crashes -- not all of which are entirely Speed's fault. Even the Red Bull cars, piloted by the much more experienced Mark Weber and David Coulthard, haven't shown too much life. The drama has been stoked by the STR team owners', Berger and Franz Tost, increasingly acidic and public comments about how displeased they are with the STR driver lineup. Things reached a nadir when, after Speed's exit from the European Grand Prix, he was physically assaulted by Tost.

Speed says he doesn't want to want to ruin his relationship with parent team Red Bull, and would work with them even if not in Formula 1 -- but he wouldn't race for STR again for any amount of money. As for the premiere motorsport category, with Speed's ouster, the record of American drivers in F1 remains, uh, nothing short of dismal.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

(The picture shows Scott at the 2001 SuperNats. That's 2006 Champ Car title contender A.J. Allmendinger two karts back.) He'll be racing alongside brother Alex (U.S. national champion in 2003, 2004 and 2005) in karts prepped by his father, Mike.

The SuperNats have long been the one U.S. race that every karter wants to win, and the one-off appearance by America's one and only F1 driver is bound to attract competitors from across the country. (The $10,000 purse for the headline class won't hurt, either.)

If you want to see a Formula 1 driver practicing his racecraft up close and personal, be in Las Vegas November 10-12! Event details are here.

[Source: SPEED Channel]
Formula 1: Scott Speed to race at U.S. karting Supernationals originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 02 Sep 2006 14:06:00 EST. While outfits like San Francisco-based ClubSportiva bill themselves as "the ownership alternative," allowing club members to rent exotic and classiccars owned by the club, Speed's Squadra Piloti operates in themanner of a dating service, putting members who own, say, a Lamborghini Gallardo, with other members who want to driveone (think Match.com, but with cars).

Squadra Piloti (it means"team of drivers" in Italian) members can make arrangements like swapping their exotics for a specified time,or simply renting their bahnburner to a member whose daily driver is, well, sub-exotic.

If having an F1 pilotas a member is important to you, Squadra Piloti's uber-driver Scott Speed is up against Club Sportiva's Mario Andretti.Tough act to follow, Scott.

Check out the Squadra Piloti website for more info. If you try it out, let usknow how it goes! Maybe Scott will rent you his Toro Rosso ride...

[Sources: Scott Speed's Squadra Piloti,Club Sportiva]

Scott Speed's Squadra Piloti - Match.com for car people originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Apr 2006 18:05:00 EST.
