Which is greener, having two wheels or four?


We've run across recent reports on the internet that suggest that scooters pollute more than HUMMERS (any SUV, really). If true, that would be a shot across the bow of many scooterists who like to think they are making a conscious effort to have a smaller impact on the environment. So, is it true? Not likely, but, as is often the case, it's not an entirely cut-and-dry issue.


Back in June of 2007, the powers-that-be in Europe officially introduced EURO 5 emissions regulations (.pdf link), and these standards are being phased into effect this year and next. Two-wheeled vehicles, such as mopeds, scooters and motorcycles, were not included in these requirements. As of today, all cycles sold in Europe must meet the less-stringent EURO 3 standards.
