Fisker will re-tool the plant to build a new, more affordable plug-in hybrid sedan to slot in below its more luxurious Karma. The goal is to have the model sell for under $40,000 after federal tax credits.

The current schedule is to have the car in production by the end of 2012 with volumes getting up to 75,000-100,000 units annually by 2014. Fisker has moved up its development schedule for what they are calling Project Nina thanks to the $528 million low cost loan it recently received courtesy of the Department of Energy. During the announcement, Fisker stated that he wants to export half of the production from the plant while creating 5,000 jobs in the U.S. (2,000 at the plant and 3,000 at suppliers). The local UAW president was also on hand, so it looks like the plant will remain unionized, which is very unusual for a startup auto plant.

Fisker is paying $18 million for the factory from Motors Liquidation which is the remainder of "Old GM" which is selling off assets from bankruptcy court. The plant most recently produced the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, both of which ended production last spring.

General Motors has made a science out of sharing platforms. So when the company's Kappa platform was introduced for a new rear-drive roadster to be distributed across three different motor divisions, you'd have figured the program was pretty safe, right? Unfortunately for the workers at the Wilmington Assembly Plant which manufactured the Kappa roadsters, those three divisions were Pontiac, Saturn and Opel - three units which the General has either sold or shut down. Which is a shame, because a perfectly good rear-drive roadster platform is a heck of a thing to waste.

In one of the strangest rumors we've heard recently, however, our compatriots over at Jalopnik report that the DeLorean Motor Company (yes, that DeLorean Motor Company) is considering buying the plant and the platform from GM and putting it back into production as a new DMC.

The company's current management is speculating whether their founder, who had a long history with Pontiac, would have tried to save the dying motor division, and are reportedly encouraged by the prospect of putting the Willmington workforce back to work. At this point, there's no telling how realistic the prospects are - after all, today's DMC does little more than service the old DeLoreans and word 'round Detroit was that the Kappas were notoriously costly to build and something of a money pit.

Either way, the company has reportedly acquired a Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe for closer consideration. And we're sure there's an aftermarket garage out there somewhere that could outfit the coupe with gullwing doors...and who knows, maybe even a little Mr. Fusion for flex-fuel capacity.
In GM's official statement after the jump, the automaker says that the memorandum of understanding would entitle Penske to the brand's 350+ dealerships, the rights to the name and its associated iconography, as well as continued production of the Aura, Vue, and Outlook on a contract basis. As expected, the dormant Astra hatchback and the rakish Sky roadster will apparently not make the transition. No financial terms of the deal have been released.

As reported earlier today by The New York Times, that abbreviated Saturn lineup will likely be joined by vehicles procured from other overseas automakers, potentially Renault's Samsung Motors division in Korea. It is not immediately clear if Penske will use the opportunity to pair existing Saturn stores with the company's other automotive distribution channel, Smart.

According to GM, the agreement is expected to be consummated in the third quarter of this year, pending the necessary paperwork shuffling between the two companies and the federal government.
General Motors' acting CEO Fritz Henderson has said the Wilmington, DE plant that currently produces the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky could be sold if a buyer was interested in producing the two roadsters. "If someone were to approach [us] with a proposal that made good sense for our people, we'd be open to it," Henderson told Autoweek. The move would ape Chrysler's plan for the Dodge Viper's production facilities, allowing another automaker to take control and continue building the niche model.

The Delaware plant also produces the Opel GT, a rebadged variant of the U.S. market Solstice and Sky, for GM's German arm, and it's obvious that as the General rushes to restructure before its June 1 deadline the automaker is looking to cut loose any and all extraneous operations. With Pontiac's future sealed, Saturn's all but assured and all three models returning little (if any) profits, the decision to nix the roadsters was obvious. Now it's time to see if someone is willing to take the reigns.

Gallery: 2010 Pontiac Solstice Coupe

[Source: Autoweek]
Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky could live on... with different parents originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 May 2009 19:01:00 EST. With both of those brands being discontinued and no plans to migrate any models over to GM's surviving brands, the slow-selling roadsters will simply disappear within the next year.

Another disappointment to GM fans was the transformation of the Chevy Volt from concept to production form. The sporty, aggressive concept was, to many, a generic interpretation of an otherwise revolutionary design.

One of our readers came up with a novel solution to both problems. Just graft the Volt concept nose onto the Sky and install an adaptation of the Voltec powertrain and voila! you have a rival to the Dodge Circuit and Tesla Roadster. From a technical standpoint, the Volt Roadster is theoretically possible. A battery pack could easily fit into the center tunnel, with the drive motor mounted at the rear, but don't get your hopes up -- it's highly-doubtful that it could ever come to production. GM is struggling to finance the development of volume models and a niche product like this just couldn't happen in the foreseeable future. But if the General could keep the Kappa tooling around, who knows? One can dream, right? Thanks to reader Ryan for the tip and the rendering!
Rendered speculation: Chevrolet Sky-Volt? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 May 2009 12:35:00 EST. Back in 2004, a vehicle line executive said "The Kappa architecture is a great platform for sporty, driver-oriented applications around the globe." Apparently, not one for which GM could make enough different models to actually earn some money.

Reasons for the sequel platform's demise are allegedly that the first hydra-formed Kappa is just too expensive to fabricate; the cars based on it use expensive, hydra-formed parts; assembly requires inordinate amounts of human labor; and GM didn't make its money back fast enough to justify the investment in a new RWD - read: thirstier - platform.

The current Kappa's suspension and design geometry aren't shared with any other car;, the platform was created to accept one engine, the Ecotec 4-cylinder; and it served under only four varieties of the same car: the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, Daewoo G2X and Opel GT. It was a lot to ask such a limited platform to achieve the volume's GM needed with cars on expensive underpinnings that didn't demand expensive prices. And if the rumors are true, then your Solstice GXP could be worth more than you expected, and sooner than you expected.

[Source: GM Inside News]
Rumormill: GM kills the Kappa II platform originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 08:01:00 EST. In this day and age, that means the interwebs, specifically a blog and social networking site. According to a post by Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak on GM's FastLane blog, www.ImSaturn.com will feature news about Saturn along with photos and videos you haven't seen anywhere else. Like other social networking sites, you can join in on the fun by starting or joining groups where people with like-interests gather together and talk. The first 400 members get a free t-shirt, but if you want one you'd better hurry 'cause there are already 300-plus members.

What uber-hip marketing strategy would be complete without internet speak? Saturn's got that covered too. This "Top Tuner" Saturn "Super" Sky is like no other Saturn we've ever seen. First of all, it's mid-engined. Second of all, that engine happens to be a Corvette LT-1 V8. What started out as a Saturn Sky now resembles something that could be an Exige or Cayman fighter. Perhaps a little too flashy for our tastes done up as a show car, you can see in profile especially that this could make a very appealing production Saturn. Perhaps it's what the Sky should have been all along. The V8 might be a bit much, but a mid-mount V6 sounds just about perfect. Granted this wasn't even an official Saturn project, but we like the concept. It was said that 10,000 man hours were spent stretching the frame, redoing all of the bodywork and creating that unique center-mount, single seat interior. We say nicely done.

Gallery: Saturn Super Sky

SEMA 2007: Saturn Super Sky originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Nov 2007 13:02:00 EST. While we're eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Saturn Astra, our friends across the pond are welcoming the new Opel GT (née Saturn Sky Redline) to the party.

We had a Sky Redline in the Autoblog Garage a few weeks ago (review in the works), and as such can tell our European friends that they're in for one seriously fun (though astonishingly impractical) ride. The only major changes involve badging, the taillamps and the grille trim, and honestly, that's fine. The Sky's looks are A-OK in our book, and since it's based on a Vauxhall concept in the first place, we're confident the folks on the Continent will be happy with its appearance as well. We do feel terribly for the Brits, who, in a cruel twist, won't get a Vauxhall version.

In any case, we're BIG fans of this whole international "sharing the wealth" thing when it comes to product. The Red Line and GXP versions went a long way towards addressing many of those concerns. There remain, however, some infuriating little details that seem to want to ruin the whole experience for you. Well, GM is listening to owners' complaints and is making small changes ro rectify the problems. Rather than wait until the new model year, the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice are getting "continuous changes" such as a power door lock button and an electronically height-adjustable driver's seat.

The need for a lock button might sound a little odd in such a small car, but the fact it's been addressed may explain how maddening the absence has been. Previously, a driver and passenger in either car had to reach behind themselves to lift the actual lock up to unlock the doors. This was after the cars had automatically locked the doors for them when the car reached 10 mph or so. Not too tricky, it might seem, but pulling the door handle didn't release the lock from the inside like many other cars do. The ensuing little twist and pull needed to free yourself was made even more difficult by the fact that the cockpit, while roomy for a roadster of this type, didn't allow a lot of body movement. And so the need for the button.

The seat adjuster also seems like a no-brainer in such a low-to-the-ground car with a high sill and cowl. Occupants of less than average stature were left to find phonebooks to sit on. Not sure why a power lift was needed instead of a manual one, but the adjuster is now on every Sky/Solstice rolling out of the plant. These two and a whole cartload of other little details changes have been made and another list of future modifications are already being looked at. Our vote for the next most frustrating bit to be changed are the cupholders. During anything approaching spirited driving, an average sized adult will have the cupholder pop open from the central tunnel at least once every 5 minutes and the temptation to just snap it off and be done with it is rather high. Even if it was somebody else's Sky.

[Source: Straightline]
Sky and Solstice evolve for the better originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Nov 2006 07:58:00 EST. It's a small category, we know, with only two members: the aforementioned Solstice and its mechanical twin, the Saturn Sky. We tend to prefer the looks of the Sky, quite frankly, and we're also of the belief that more power is rarely a bad thing. The Gravana "Tuning Turbo" Saturn Sky has a pretty long name for such a small car, but it's fortunately also long on horsepower.

Gravana added a Hahn Racecraft 16G intercooled stage 3 turbocharger to the Sky's 2.4L Ecotec engine, resulting in nothing short of 348 horsepower and 341 lb.-ft. of torque. Who needs a V-8? Well, V-8s do have some advantages, but this much power from a turbo four, with its lighter weight leaving handling relatively unaffected, makes a lot of sense here.

Follow the jump for more info on the Tuning Turbo Sky and a gallery of pics.
Continue reading SEMA: Gravana "Tuning Turbo" Saturn Sky

SEMA: Gravana "Tuning Turbo" Saturn Sky originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Nov 2006 17:53:00 EST. The Sky Red Line takes all of that goodness and infuses it with 260 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque via a 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec four. That's good for a 5.5-second 0-60 time and a 13.9-second quarter mile.

Best of all? The price of entry is a very reasonable $27,895. <strike>Given the high desirability and limited availability of the Red Line, don't be surprised to see dealer markups that will bump that number up -- in some cases, significantly. </strike>

If you can get your hands on one for MSRP, it's not like you're getting a stripper, either.
General Motors' Bob Lutz has high expectations for Saturn this year -- he says it will be the company's hottest brand. While Chevrolet should see the biggest growth in terms of overall units, Lutz says that the company's floundering progeny from Spring Hill will represent GM's highest percentage of growth thanks to new models like the Sky roadster and Aura sedan. Saturn sales were up 1.2 percent through April over the same period in 2005.

Never thought we'd see the Saturn Sky rebadged as a Daewoo, but that day has come. Enter the G2X roadster, intro'd at the Busan Motor Show. Like the Sky and the Solstice, Daewoo is using the vehicle as a halo and a way to lure in some younger buyers as it narrows the gap between it and Kia Motors. This, in addition to Opel's version of the Sky sold in Europe as the GT and perhaps a Holden model to be sold sometime in Australia (or so we assume) officially makes the Sky a world car.

According to the linked article Brandweek, the marketingcampaign will be promoting all the vehicles as a unit with the "Like...." tagline instead of, justthe Sky roadster, for example. The advertising company that developed the campaign feels it better reflects Saturn's'togetherness' philosophy.

Will it work? Certainly the division's products are becoming more compelling, but Saturn has clearly moved awayfrom its brandspace as the egalitarian small car company 'with a heart of gold' into a world of 8-passenger crossoversand such. Critics argue that the brand's identity is becoming very muddy in its quest to enter other segments and findprofitability, and that the "Like..." campaign is a tad disingenous. Who's right? Have your say incomments.

The big news is under the hood, where the Red Line model gets the Ecotec turbocharged direct-injection engine, good for an inspiring 260 hp at 5300 rpmand 260 ft-lb of torque at 2500 rpm. At 2.1 hp per cubic inch of displacement, the turbo Ecotec sets a General Motorsrecord for specific output.

The Red Line will grace your local Saturn dealer's showroom this fall.

We'll have more coverage from our crack team of NYIAS reporters, but in the meantime, enjoy the press release andmore photos after the jump.

[Source: GM]
Continue reading Saturn previews Sky Red Line ahead of New York debut

Saturn previews Sky Red Line ahead of New York debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Apr 2006 15:24:00 EST. For what may be the first timeever, the General Motors brand has a product in such demand that they are charging market premiums in addition to MSRP.The long-anticipated 2007 Sky roadster is just now arriving at dealerships to pent-up demand and early deposits, anddealers are taking advantage of the Sky's compelling package with markups.

According to an Orange CountyRegister piece, some West Coast dealers are gouging consumers to the tune of $3,000 over the Sky's $23,690 MSRP,angering many would-be buyers. For its part, Saturn's general manager, Jill Lajdziak has responded by saying:"Retailers are free to set their own prices, but we highly encourage our retailers not to sell above theMSRP." If that response is anything to go by, GM won't be taking to task dealers over the issue.

The Sky joins its Pontiac Solstice twin, along with the Toyota Prius, and MINI Cooper as recent victims of dealerprice gouging.

[Source: OC Register]
Sky high?
