Some lucky hoon will be getting his Dr. Grant on in the most authentic Jurassic Park recreation Jeep Wrangler we've ever seen. The graphics are painted on, rather than being rendered in vinyl, which means this Jeep's look is there to stay. Even the complicated and expensive light bar is functional.

Underneath its prehistoric bodywork sits a 118,000-mile 1995 Jeep Wrangler Sahara with an impressive list of new or refurbished parts, not to mention rare-for-YJs air conditioning. The thing sold for a heady $9,000, which is way more than any reasonable person should spend on a 118K-mile 1995 Jeep under normal circumstances. But with this level of workmanship and the important maintenance done, the figure doesn't sound so horrifying.
eBay Find of the Day: Jeep Wrangler Jurassic Park edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 May 2011 19:00:00 EST.
Jeep is reaching out to its adventurous, youthful target market with an ad campaign featuring Lenny Kravitz, the picture of clean-cut rebelliousness. The short clip after the break is apparently the abbreviated version of an upcoming short film featuring Kravitz taking the 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited off the beaten track. Some of you may recall that this isn't the first time that Mr. Kravitz' music has been used to promote the off-road-ready sport-utes of the world.

As a bonus, Chrysler threw in a sample of the music on Kravitz's new record, Black and White America. From what we can tell, the upcoming short will feature Kravitz and the Wrangler getting down and dirty in an abandoned swamp. Click past the jump to see the action for yourself.
Continue reading Jeep hires Lenny Kravitz to hock Wrangler

Jeep hires Lenny Kravitz to hock Wrangler originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 May 2011 10:01:00 EST. If there's one thing we're in favor of its pushing cars to their breaking point. See LeMons. But what about pushing cars past their breaking point? Like across Africa? That's exactly what British journalist and adventurer Brian Milton did in 1968 when he took a 1937 Austin 7 Ruby and drove it across the Sahara Desert to meet his fiancee.

Mr. Milton has written a book about his forty-one year old adventure entitled Alexa -- the Life and Death of an Austin 7 Ruby. And to our ears, it sounds wonderful:

"I motored 1,800 miles on rough track across the Sahara... I reached a Nigeria that was wracked by civil war... I survived. But alas, my Austin 7 did not. We crashed once and ran out of water twice in the Sahara. I drove 2,000 miles on three pistons and 900 miles without brakes, lights, shock absorbers or starting motor or handle."

Mr. Milton has sent a copy of Alexa to none other than Jeremy "Torques" Clarkson, asking the Top Gear star to go on and recreate his 1968 adventure. While some might argue that driving a Lancia Beta Coupe across the desert might get Jezza off the hook, we'd totally watch him and May and Hammond kill themselves in something as dodgy as an Austin 7. Interested in reading about Brian Milton's adventure? Alexa can be purchased right here.

Making feature films is an imprecise business. Marketing is an imprecise science. Put the two together, and you get things like Chrysler paying $3 million to get the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited showcased in the 2005 film Sahara.

The big budget blockbuster opened at number one, but turned into a big dusty flop that lost $78 million. If Jeep didn't get any positive halo association from the film, it can be happy that it's Wrangler wasn't seen getting stuck in or cut from the film altogether. As one producer who wrote to the film's execs put it, "You can't have the truck get almost stuck. I would bet that Jeep will have a heart attack when they see that. They want to show how well the Jeep handles and responds -- not that it will get stuck in a tough situation." At another point, the same producer told the director he couldn't cut a scene he was having a problem with, saying simply "Can't cut. Jeep to pay 3 million."

Chrysler's other movie partnerships have included Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life (Jeep), and Firewall (Chrysler 300C), none of which burned up the box office. Still, if you're a fan of Sahara and want to help Jeep recoup its money, you might still be able to order a special edition Wrangler at the Jeep Sahara site.

Not only is the new Wrangler as capable as ever, it's also less expensive and has more content than the Wrangler it replaces. As part of Chrysler's effort to bring the vehicle's MSRP down closer to its actual transaction price (thus eliminating troublesome incentives), the Wrangler starts at just $18,765, down $285 from the 2006 model and with $1,715 in more content. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon drops an even more impressive $1,840 while gaining $1,255 in content. Across the lineup, the average Wrangler price drop averages out to around $1,200, and the all-new Wrangler Unlimited 4x4 four-door is just a few grand up from the base two door at $20,410.

Chrysler boasts that more content than ever comes standard, including a much needed engine upgrade thanks to the new 202-hp, 3.8L V6; Jeep's electronic stability program (ESP); Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM); anti-lock brakes; and multiple door and top configurations.
