REPORT: BAIC only interested in parts of Saab, "White Knight" looking increasingly unlikely
It seemed pretty obvious when we first heard that China's BAIC wanted Saab's tooling that it didn't want anything to do with purchasing the Swedish automaker's full monty. If BAIC wanted to be in the Saab business, clearly, it would have made overtures for more than just the retired tooling from the older versions of the 9-5 and 9-3. BAIC wants the cars and all the stuff that Saab made to make them, so as to have something else to sell in its home market. The rest of Saab, such as its Trollhattan headquarters and workforce apparently aren't ... Read more →

Spy Shots: Koenigsegg to rebadge Saabs in its own image? Not so much 2 months ago on Autoblog
How much does it take to turn a Saab into a Koenigsegg? The half-billion dollars in funding the niche automaker is locking down to acquire the erstwhile General Motors subsidiary? The million euros one of its supercars sells for? How about 116 kronor? That amounts to about $16.50, and it's how ...
REPORT: Outgoing Saab 9-5 to live on... as Chinese BAIC 2 months ago on Autoblog
If Billy Joel is right that only the good die young, the outgoing Saab 9-5 has been very, very bad. In automotive terms, the 9-5 is positively ancient, having first seen the light of day in 1997 and getting very little in the way of meaningful changes since that time. If, though, you happen ...
Frankfurt 2009: 2010 Saab 9-5 is proof there's still some flight left in the ol' Griffin 2 months ago on Autoblog
To be honest, there have been points at which it felt like this new Saab 9-5 would never see the light of day. To say that the outgoing model had grown long in the tooth would be a colossal understatement, and in the hyper-competitive market that is the globe's entry-level premium segment, the ...

It's been about a month since a batch of photos of the new 2010 Saab 9-5 showed up online thanks to a leaky German magazine. Charting out Saab's upcoming model lineup 4 months ago on Autoblog
There are many folks who've wanted big things from Saab, including this blogger, but we never seemed to get them. The company sold 93,220 cars in 2008, a drop of more than 25% from the previous year, and getting sucked into this year's General Motors saga hasn't exactly helped to create any ...

Rendered Speculation: Is this the new Saab 9-5? 5 months ago on Autoblog
Saabs United procured some rendered versions of the coming Saab 9-5 that are purportedly from Saab itself. While computer renderings must be viewed with a few packets of salt sprinkled on the screen, if you compare the 9-5 sedan render with a spy shot of the rear end of the actual car, the ...
Saab 9-5 semi-revealed under form fitting cover 6 months ago on Autoblog
Saab seems to be eking out as much exposure as possible from its upcoming 9-5 sedan and wagon. The Swedish automaker has reportedly flown a number of European journalists to the Saab museum in its home town of Trollhattan, where what appears to be production-ready versions of the new 9-5 in wagon ...
Spy Shots: Oh-So-Good Saab 9-5 rear end and interior spotted 6 months ago on Autoblog
Rumor has it that the next 9-5 is so good, General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson doesn't want to get rid of Saab. We suspect that's more of a ploy to draw in big dollars, but a top notch Saab 9-5 will help improve the value of the perennially struggling Swedish automaker regardless. Judging from these ...
Is GM's Henderson 'afraid' to let Saab go because the next 9-5 is so good? 7 months ago on Autoblog
According to Swedish newspaper Expressen, Fritz Henderson, General Motors' recently appointed CEO, doesn't want to see Saab leave the American automaker's portfolio. Why? Apparently, because the upcoming Saab 9-5 sport sedan is just that good. The paper goes on to suggest that the new Saab 9-5 Aero ...

An eagle-eyed spy shooter hiding behind the bushes somewhere in Europe managed to capture a trio of next-gen Saab 9-5 hatchbacks wearing a bit less camouflage than we've seen in the past. For the first time, we can see the new Swedish beauty's front and rear light clusters, along with what appears ...
GM to make new Buick in Germany? 10 months ago on Autoblog
GM might make a swap in its European production plans, shifting Buick assembly to Opel and Saab assembly to Sweden. Names of the models in question haven't been mentioned, but the Opel Insignia, Chinese-spec Buick Regal and coming Saab 9-5 are all built on GM's Epsilon II platform. The ...
Saab 9-3X and 9-5 officially confirmed for 2009 rollout 10 months ago on Autoblog
Over the last six months, the fate of Saab has become even more of a question than it has been for the last several years. General Motors put the marque up for strategic review last Fall and it was not listed among the company's core brands when it submitted its viability plan to the U.S. Congress ...
Spy Shots: Is this the next Saab 9-5? 10 months ago on Autoblog
On the market in its current form essentially unchanged for twelve years running, the Saab 9-5 is an aging beast, but the Swedish automaker is hard at work on its replacement. These spy shots of a heavily camouflaged test mule were snapped on the outskirts of Barcelona, Spain. It's hard to tell much ...
Detroit 2009: Saab 9-5 Griffin Edition is an excuse to issue a press release 10 months ago on Autoblog
We really feel for the folks at Saab, and not just because we love the 9-5 SportCombi and that we pined for a Turbo 900 with the Aero package for what seemed like all of the '80s. Yet look ahead 20 years – specifically to the 2009 Detroit Auto Show – and all we have to get excited ...
REPORT: Against all odds, next Saab 9-5 on schedule 11 months ago on Autoblog
On the market since 1997, Saab's 9-5 is getting more than a little long in the tooth. The Swedish automaker is about to launch the Griffin Edition of its aging sedan, but that's a stop-gap at best; if Saab is serious about its future, it's going to need an all-new 9-5. Or more accurately, if ...

New Saab 9-5 sketch is less quirky, more badass 1 year ago on Autoblog
A Saab owner attending the 2008 Saab Owner's Convention posted a recap of the events at Trollhattan Saab (which we thought was defunct, but if not, we're glad it's back). One of the most noteworthy events was something on which he barely commented: a sketch of the new 9-5. Saab has been threatening ...
Saab 9-5 packing 1.6-liter turbo in Europe 1 year ago on Autoblog
Saab's rumored decision to downsize its engines gets some confirmation today, as reports indicate that the Swedish brand's next 9-5 will get just 1.6-liters of displacement for its base engine. However, power should still be up to par, as the mill will get a high-pressure turbocharger to boost ...

Saab's offering up a Nordic Edition 9-5 for 2008, and no that doesn't mean an integrated sauna in the SportCombi and a complimentary copy of ABBA's Greatest Hits, alltför dålig. The package is available as an upgrade for mid-level Vector versions of the sedan and wagon, and consists of ...
