Saab is continuing to claw its way back from the automotive grave. The company just announced that it will once again return to the land of maple syrup and Mounties in 2011. The svelte Swedish machines will be distributed by International Fleet Sales, and both Saab North America and IFS say that so far, around 20 dealers have raised their hands to sell the cars.

Our neighbors to the north will be able to sink their teeth into a total of five models once the new dealerships get off the ground, including all of the multiple flavors of the 9-3. If all goes well, the 9-3X crossover will also touch down on Canadian soil, along with the all-new 2011 9-5.

Saab expects to be doing business in Canada by fall of this year, so if you're north of the border and hankering for a slice of Saab-Spyker goodness, you don't have long to wait. Hit the jump for the press release.
Our thinking is, now that Trollhattan is free of General Motors, it will get back to the business of making niche three- and five-door hatches coveted by post-grad Ivy League types with mega-potent turbos blowing into longitudinal, slanty I-4s spinning the front wheels. Even if our entire Saabian wish list isn't fulfilled, a fully independent Saab can only result in better focused cars. For instance, the 9-7X SUV will stay dead and buried.

Of course, even if the 9-7X was something of an abomination, that doesn't mean that there aren't Saabophiles out there that seek the all-weatherness of all-wheel drive combined with a lot of cargo hauling capability. While we suggest those people first seek out a Volvo C303, Saab's thinking different. Badly translated reports are fluttering that not only is Saab building a 9-5X (Saab chose to brand their AWD vehicles with XWD, or "Cross-Wheel Drive" - a fancy way of saying Haldex version 4.0) that will presumably be a performance variant, but they're also apparently set to build a XWD-equipped 9-5X SportCombi (station wagon) that will do battle with up-armored station wagons like the Audi Allroad and Volvo XC70.

The 9-5X SportCombi will be separate from the apparently still forthcoming Saab 9-4X, an actual SUV-looking CUV built on the same platform as the Cadillac SRX. It looks as if the 9-4X will be the only new Saab product not built in Sweden. One more little tidbit: As Saab wrestles itself back to its former glory, they might just be dropping the hyphenated names. Meaning that the next 9-3 might actually be billed as the Saab 93, and that this whole time we've been talking about the new 95X. Time will tell.

The good news for Saab loyalists is that dealerships have been told they may start placing orders for the Saab 9-3X. The bad news for Saab loyalists is that if the deal with Spyker falls through, that brand-new Saab you are dreaming about will never arrive in your driveway. In a nutshell, dealers are allowed to take orders for the cars, but there's no pricing information and nothing will be officially submitted until the Saab/Spyker deal closes (as of now, this is scheduled for February 15).

The announcement isn't completely unexpected. After all, we reported just a few days ago that Spyker had big plans for the Saab lineup, including full range of 9-3 models for 2012. These will follow on the heels of the new 9-5, and the 9-4X, due in the U.S. market during 2010 and 2011, respectively. Whatever the case, if you believe in Saab, now's the time to scoot down to your local dealer, open your checkbook and place an order!

Saab floats along in limbo as General Motors figures out what to do with its Swedish plum, meaning that dealers are stuck with moribund product to try and unload. It's as nasty as it sounds for the automaker, but for buyers, it means deals on Saabs like never before.

Being a premium segment brand, you'll get a lot for your money buying a considerably discounted Saab. If you're like most new car buyers, though, you'll still have to borrow the money. Good luck with that if your institution is Bank of America and you're set on a Crazy Eddie priced 9-5. Right there in its eligibility requirements for auto loans, B of A spells out "no Isuzu or Saab vehicles." Being paired with a dead Japanese brand? Just another indignity for the Trolls in Trollhättan.

Saab 9-X Air BioHybrid Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

The talk has begun: last week the outlines of Koenigsegg's intent for Saab was publicized, now the sports car company is flapping their jibs to back it up. The 9-5 and 9-4X that GM developed will be arriving shortly, and behind those is the 9-5 SportCombi. The gem for Saab fans is the mention of a redesigned 9-3, and perhaps a 9-1 and 9-2.

That 9-3 might even make a return to the days of quirky, since it is "more unlikely than likely" that it will be built on a GM platform. In short, Koenigsegg wants to do a clean-sheet design, and that could mean restoring the aura of the Saab 900 to the brand's smallest car. That, a huge leap in feel and quality, and the ability to sustain a paucity of sales for a few years just might put a Swedish crown back on the old gal. However, we realize that is asking a lot...

But going beyond that, Koenigsegg's plan is that the 9-3 wouldn't remain the brand's smallest car for long. A 9-1 or 9-2 that takes inspiration from the 9-X Air BioHybrid Concept is being considered, which would finally give Saab an entrant in a segment where buyers have proved they are willing to pay a premium for well-done small cars. The test of Koenigsegg's ambition begins now.

Saab really has been changing perspective lately, from the look of its cars to the people who decide on the look of its cars. That kind of thing will happen when you enter bankruptcy and are sold back into the bosom of your homeland. So this Saab 9-3X commercial is a, yes, quirky, look at the the philosophy behind Trollhatten's finest. Who else would make an ad that includes a paper airplane, an ant, a moose and a pine cone to advertise a station wagon?

Click above for high-res gallery of the Saab 9-3X

Saab debuted its 9-3X at the Geneva Motor Show, and while it's a new market for the Swedish brand (we'll try to forget about the body-on-frame 9-7X, thank you), we suspect that the lifted load-lugger will probably outsell the standard SportCombi by a healthy margin Stateside, given America's appetite for such things.

It's quite handsome in person and the inherently less-sharp handling of a sportstilts wagon ought to paper over the 9-3's occasionally soggy dynamics. Said another way, a lack of razor-sharp handling in the 9-3 platform would seem to be more appropriate/acceptable in a softroader than a sporty wagon or sedan.

While basically the same as the 2.0-liter Sportcombi, the 9-3X has a 1.4-inch higher stance and standard Cross-Wheel Drive (XWD), a fantastically grippy system that figures to give the new model sufficient softroading abilities to be a worthwhile alternative to the Subaru Outback or Volvo XC70. Other model-specific cues include contrasting lower cladding and flared fenders, unique 17-inch wheels, and a roof rack for safely displaying all of one's lifestyle accessories.

Given the effort to extract Saab from General Motors' portfolio and its uncertain future, there is a very real possibility that the 9-3X will be the last new Griffin-badged product we see in the States - the badly-needed 9-5 replacement is slated to debut before the year is out, but we expect it will go to European markets first, and there has been some talk of Saab withdrawing from North America entirely even if it continues to exist. While the 9-3X can't be fairly tasked with saving the company, it's a compelling-looking package that would appear to deserve a shot.

Gallery: Geneva 2009: 2010 Saab 9-3X

Geneva 2009: 2010 Saab 9-3X ideal wagon for lingonberry picking originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Mar 2009 12:59:00 EST.
This latest video of the Saab Performance Team is just as depressing as it is cool (additional helpings here and here). The cool part is obvious: when's the last time you saw a guy put a yellow convertible on two wheels across a frozen lake and drive it with one hand on the wheel? Depressing because it reminds you of how cool Saab is, which leads to remembering that Saab is bankrupt. Still, it's well worth the watch, and you even get footage of the coming 9-3X, and proof that the company should be saved, if only for the Performance Team. Follow the jump to check it out.

[Source: TurboNines]
Continue reading VIDEO: Saab Performance Team practicing with new models

VIDEO: Saab Performance Team practicing with new models originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 01 Mar 2009 16:34:00 EST.
Despite an uncertain future, Saab will continue adding more product to its portfolio next month when it debuts the 2010 9-3X at the Geneva Motor Show. The 9-3X is a jacked up version of the 9-3 SportCombi that employs the Swedish brand's Cross Wheel Drive (XWD) system that first debuted on the sporty Turbo X sedan. It sits 1.4 inches higher than the standard SportCombi on new multi-spoke 17-inch wheels and is powered solely by Saab's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The exterior also features new styling elements that reinforce the high-riding wagon's prowess when the road gets gravely, including this segment's obligatory two-tone paint scheme that highlights its flared fenders. The 9-3X also comes with roof rails to carry your surf board and skis, skid panels fore and aft for when the curbs get really high and twin tail pipes. The new 9-3X looks ready to pick up where the late 9-2X - which was actually a rebadged Subaru WRX - left off. The 9-3X, however, is all Saab... err... GM.

[Source: Saab]
Continue reading Geneva Preview: All roads lead to 2010 Saab 9-3X

Geneva Preview: All roads lead to 2010 Saab 9-3X originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 08:58:00 EST. In addition to more generous clearance afforded by the vertically enhanced suspension, the Volvo XC70-fighter will don plenty of cladding, whopping pipes out back, and it will utilize the services of a Haldex all-wheel-drive system to conquer inclement conditions.

Unless Saab decides to create an Aero edition that will use the 2.8-liter V6, the 210 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter might be the only engine on offer in the U.S. initially. No price has been mentioned, either, but with the 9-3 SportCombi XWD running $38,585, that's probably a good place to start working your way up. We'll see the car at next month's Geneva Motor Show, and it is expected on sale later this year.

[Source: Motor Authority]
Spy Shots: Saab 9-3X spotted up close originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 10:28:00 EST. General Motors put the marque up for strategic review last Fall and it was not listed among the company's core brands when it submitted its viability plan to the U.S. Congress in December. With many of its new model introductions being delayed this year, one has to wonder if Saab will just slowly slide off into oblivion. Given the seeming absence of anyone willing to step up and buy the Swedish automaker, that may yet happen.

Before that time, though, Saab dealers in Europe will get at least two additions to their product lineup. The 9-3X and the recently spied 9-5 are listed among new European introductions confirmed for 2009 in a new company press release. That news nugget came buried in a missive about The General's global sales for 2008. As far as we know, the 9-3X is basically a higher riding version of the 9-3 wagon, à la Subaru Outback. It will probably use a variant of the Haldex XWD system seen on the Turbo-X. The 9-5, of course, is an Epsilon II based replacement for the long-lived Saab flagship of the same name. No mention was made of the 9-4X crossover that shares its platform with the new Cadillac SRX. That vehicle has likely been delayed until at least 2010, if it hasn't been canceled altogether. Check out the press release after the jump.

[Source: General Motors]
Continue reading Saab 9-3X and 9-5 officially confirmed for 2009 rollout

Saab 9-3X and 9-5 officially confirmed for 2009 rollout originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Jan 2009 13:58:00 EST. This offroadier 9-3 <strike>wagon</strike> SportCombi derivative has a raised suspension, "skid-plates" and extra cladding, plus jumbo exhaust tips to give it a more butch look. Looks like the Outback craze continues unabated. As we've told you before, the 9-3X will differ a bit from other 9-3s in its focus. Saab's Haldex drivetrain has shown itself to be a hoot to drive, which we noted when we sampled the Turbo X. Unlike the performance-oriented Turbo X, however, the 9-3X will use its Haldex AWD system for tackling trenches rather than twisties, offering its owners the security to tackle snow, potholes and black ice. It looks like it's going to be a busy 2009 for Saab, with the pending 9-4X, tweaks to the 9-5 and now the 9-3X.

[Source: TrollhattanSaab.net]
Spy Shots: Saab 9-3X crossover-thingy caught originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 15:29:00 EST. SportCombi, and word has it that the all-wheel-drive wonders will be making their debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. Unlike the performance-oriented Turbo X, the 9-3X will use its Haldex AWD system for tackling particularly deep potholes, traversing heavily packed snow and otherwise offering its owners the sure footedness that comes with all four wheels turning at once. Based on our previous spy photos, we expect the 9-3X to look the part with fender flares, a lifted suspension and faux skid plates. Seriously though, adding AWD to the 9-3 in a mini-SUV package is a smart move right now and one that's been paying Subaru dividends for some time.

Also on the docket for a Paris debut is a new 9-3 concept that should preview what the next iteration of the sedan and wagon will look like. Our flights are booked, hotel rooms reserved and appetite for pasta at a fever pitch, so we'll bring you live coverage of these two reveals as they happen from Italy in early October.

[Source: Channel4]
Saab 9-3X, 9-3 concept coming to Paris? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Aug 2008 09:26:00 EST. That hardware will also be available on the 9-3 Aero, and Saab's got another trick up its sleeve in the form of the 9-3X. Rather than go the lowered, Vaderized route of the Turbo X, the 9-3X is angling for the table scraps left over by the Audi Allroad, Volvo XC70, and even the luxed-up versions of the Subaru Outback. Raised suspension and skid-platey accents butch it up, along with extra cladding and exhaust tips big enough to flank some bumper nutz. The official unveiling will most likely be in Paris in October. With the pending 9-4 and tweaks to the 9-5, it's going to be a busy few months for Saab. Thanks for the tip, Swade!

[Source: Trollhattan Saab]

Spy Shots: Saab 9-3x in the works originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 09:03:00 EST.
