Another day, another spate of hopped up Audi A1 photos. This time, shooters nabbed a five-door S1 Sportback prototype out for testing. Boasting the hallmark quad exhaust outlets of the Audi S models, this car is the best indication we've had so far that the automaker is considering an S1 in both three-door and five-door guises in the EU. Word has it the sporterized A1 would bow with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with between 220 and 240 horsepower. That's a tick under the wicked A1 Quattro with its 252 horsepower mill.

As you may recall, that machine was a limited production creation with a wild body kit and prominent rear spoiler. Something tells us the S1 Sportback prototype you see here is likely aimed at a wider audience. Photographers spotted it frolicking about in the snow with an S3. Check out the full gallery above for a closer look.
Audi S1 prototype enflames hot hatch speculation originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 03 Dec 2012 19:28:00 EST.
Bulgarian tuner Prospeed has built a replica of Audi's fabled S1 World Rally Championship mauler out of a garden-variety Audi Coupe, and it's a convincing-looking beast. Helping in its bid for authenticity is genuine Group B horsepower: 800 ponies, to be exact. It won the Bulgarian Hillclimb Championship last year, and it recently ran up an incline at the Kyustendil Hillclimb, part of this year's championship series.

The list of modifications made to the donor car are intense, and so is the sound of the final product, singing like a crazed goldfinch as driver Nikolay Zlatkov races to the top of the hill. You can have a watch - and a listen - in the video below.
Continue reading Watch this Audi S1 Group B racer tear up the Kyustendil Hillclimb

Watch this Audi S1 Group B racer tear up the Kyustendil Hillclimb originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 20:00:00 EST.
The engineers at Audi look to be hard at work on a more potent version of the company's A1 hatchback. Spy photographers spotted this machine out on public streets for testing, and the presence of a set of quad exhaust out back leads us to believe this could be the rumored S1 model. It's unclear whether this machine will slot under the limited-edition 256-horsepower A1 Quattro or be sold as a less extreme version of the hottest of Audi hatches when that car's production slots fill up. Photographers report this is a gasoline-powered model, which means the company's 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine is likely kicking behind the headlights.

If that's true, we can expect between 220 and 250 horsepower shuttled to all four wheels via the German automaker's Quattro all-wheel drive system. If you were wondering why Audi didn't use the S1 name for the A1 Quattro, you may very well be looking at the reason.
Are you the Audi S1? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 14:15:00 EST.
When you seen an Audi prototype with enormous lower air intakes up front, it can only mean one thing: an RS model cometh. Earlier reports stated that Audi might skip the S1 and go right for the hardcore RS1 you see here, and while we've seen spy shots of what appeared to be an S1, the fact that we haven't heard anything since could mean that this RS model will be what launches first.

Fine by us, even though we American's can't drive the hot little Audi.

We could speculate all day about the RS1 getting the same 350-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo-five as the RS3, but the truth is, it'll probably use a turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant producing around 250 horsepower. That's still a potent punch in a car as small as the A1, and with Quattro all-wheel drive on hand, we imagine it'll be one heck of a good steer.
Hotter Audi RS1 caught testing originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 14:29:00 EST.
Though its product range these days is restricted to automobiles and motorcycles, BMW is no stranger to aviation. After all, that's how it got its start. But that was a long time ago.

More recently, however, the Bavarian automaker's design consultancy division has gotten its parent company back into the air, styling the cabins on Embraer and Falcon business jets. So what's the next step? Well, we might not have seen it coming, but the answer is the aviation headset you see here.

DesignWorksUSA designed the S1 headset for Sennheiser, placing an emphasis on safety and quality of sound. Pilots can easily adjust the fit, the ear cushions are designed to accommodate sunglasses (Top Gun-style mirrored aviators or otherwise), it packs active noise cancellation and Bluetooth connectivity, and the whole thing is controlled with an LED interface.

All in all a slick unit with details that pilots will undoubtedly appreciate. And if the performance from BMW's own M cars gets any more astronomic, drivers just might come to appreciate them as well. Details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading BMW takes to the skies with Sennheiser aviation headset

BMW takes to the skies with Sennheiser aviation headset originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 07:57:00 EST. Bentley and Bugatti may be under common ownership these days, but back in the day, they were bitter rivals. That rivalry lead one Ettore Bugatti to deride his English competition as "the world's fastest lorries" (the British term for commercial trucks). He was speaking figuratively, because while the notion of a Bentley sport-ute has been rumored every now and then, the company doesn't actually make trucks. This, then, stands as an exception.

This classic started life in 1956 as a Bentley S1, purchased by the owner of a large retail chain before changing hands to the Earl of Stradbroke who had it converted to a pickup. The work was carried out in New South Wales, Australia, where they've always been bonkers for utes. They painted it yellow and gave it a woody-style pickup bed.

The car was donated by Stradbroke to the Trinity Grammar School, which is now auctioning the vehicle through insurance broker Shannons to raise funds to build a new library. The vehicle will hit the auction block during the Australian Motor Show on July 10, where it's expected to fetch between $22,000 and $32,000 in Australian funds, or about $23,600-$34,400 in equivalent American greenbacks.
Custom 1956 Bentley S1 ute up for charity auction in Australia originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 07:39:00 EST.
Audi and all-wheel drive go together like mothers and apple pie. The German automaker has cultivated its Quattro systems as emblematic of its raison d'etre, incorporating it into its rapidly expanding range... with one exception: the A1. But that's about to change.

After launching the diminutive hatchback in front-wheel-drive only, Audi is working on extending the traction to the rear wheels as well. And to give us an idea of what to expect, the company has launched the A1 Clubsport Quattro concept among the 18 vehicles on display at its annual celebration in Wörthersee.

The little beast is built around an extensively tuned 2.5-liter turbo five with just under 500 horsepower. Optimized by direct injection and channeled to all four wheels through a six-speed manual, Audi claims the concept can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in a scant 3.7 seconds, doubling that speed in 10.9 en route to an electronically limited, Autobahn-crunching top end of 250 km/h (155 mph).

The package is rounded out by an aggressive wide-body aerodynamic kit, decked out in matte white paint with a carbon-fiber roof, with a side-exit exhaust and 19-inch alloys. While the production A1 Quattro and the S1 or RS1 to follow isn't likely to pack the 500 horses of the show car, gamers can check it out in Need for Speed World for a limited time.

Audi has also released a series of visual mods - including decals and aero kits - for the existing A1 at the show. Want to read more? We've got the full press blast after the jump along, with an extensive batch of images in our high-resolution gallery.
Continue reading Audi unveils 500hp A1 Clubsport Quattro show car at Wörthersee

Audi unveils 500hp A1 Clubsport Quattro show car at Wörthersee originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 May 2011 08:56:00 EST. Spy Shots: Audi S1 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Spy photographers have been training their lenses on upcoming Audi models as of late. Earlier, we got a look at the R8 GT Spyder, and now those cameras have captured the S1 hot hatch. Though it may look like a standard Audi A1, this mule is covering up S1 guts. What's the give-away? A set of large exhaust pipes planted in the rear end.

Rumor has it that the mill powering this sporty hatchback will pump out 270 horsepower. That energy will be sent out to all four corners courtesy of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Expect to see more aggressive bits of body work on the real S1 when it finally shows its face.
Audi S1 caught testing, likes wearing A1 clothing originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 May 2011 16:30:00 EST.
Honda has unleashed a new compact sedan on the Chinese market. Called the Li Nian S1, or Everus for those that speak the king's English, the new vehicle is geared toward younger buyers. We're guessing that this little sucker gets its bones from the likes of the Honda City given its proportions and the fact that Honda says that the vehicle is based on existing architecture. Buyers will be able to pick up the Everus with their choice of either a 1.3-liter or a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine when the pint-sized sedan goes on sale in spring 2011.

Honda says that Everus is the company's oldest nameplate in China, and that the new model will help the Japanese automaker expand its line up in one of the quickest-growing automotive markets in the world. The Everus took a bow at the Guangzhou Motor Show. Hit the jump for a look at the full press blast.

If you were surprised Audi chose to forgo the S1 nameplate for the top-spec version of the A1 premium hatch, hold on to your hats, because the rumor mill is spinning up again. This time, reports direct from Germany suggest that Ingolstadt may choose to skip the S1 altogether and go straight to the top with a new RS1.

The move would necessitate the adaption of the A1's chassis to accommodate all-wheel drive as previously reported, with power potentially coming from the same 2.0-liter TFSI engine found in the Volkswagen Golf GTI, and the Mini Cooper JCW in its sites. A series of visual upgrades would undoubtedly distinguish the RS1 from its more pedestrian stablemates, with reports tipping its arrival for early 2012.

Audi A1 TFSI - Click above for high-res image gallery

Audi surprised us all when it took the wraps off its top-of-the-line A1 TFSI hatchback packing everything but the kitchen sink...and the S1 nameplate. The reason, according to reports, was that every S model in the company's history has featured Quattro all-wheel drive, but the PQ25 platform on which the A1 is based can't accommodate it. At least, not yet.

The UK's Autocar now suggests, however, that a business case is being made inside the Volkswagen Group to engineer the platform to accept the extra driveshaft. Doing so would allow for proper Quattro-driven S1, but that's not all. In order to justify the cost, the Volkswagen Polo could get a couple of models driven on all fours, including a Polo R hot hatch to slot in above the Polo GTI and a CrossPolo soft-roader with actual traction to back up its butch styling.

Audi's lineup is expanding so quickly you'd think its cars were spawning new models by mitosis. In a few days at the Paris Motor Show we'll be seeing the newest hot addition to the A1 range: the 185-horsepower 1.4 TSFI with thrust provided by a twin-charged four cylinder. That's not the S1, it just has the S-Line package thrown on for racy looks. Next year, the S1 itself will step forward, with the Golf GTI's turbocharged 220-hp engine sitting up front. It is a sure bet to shave serious time off the TSFI's 6.9-second run from zero to 62 miles per hour.

After that comes the Audi RS3, using the same 340-hp, five-cylinder turbo from the TT RS. Sub five-second runs to 62 mph are in the offing, and its 250 kph (155 mph) top speed can be raised to 280 kph (174 mph) for a nominal fee. Then, at the Frankfurt Auto Show in the fall, the RS7 Sportback takes a bow. Powering the four-door fastback will be the 4.0-liter, 550-hp twin-turbo V8 that'll be shared with the 2011 Bentley Continental GT. That would put it about 100 horses clear of the rumored output in the S7 we should see next week in Paris, and the V8 is said to be 20 percent more fuel efficient than the 5.0-liter V10 in the RS6.

If you're mad about the fact that Audi won't be bringing its new A1 to the United States, you'll want to look away - our spies have captured the hotter S1 version of Audi's pint-sized hatch. This prototype may only look like an A1 in S-Line trim, but our spies point out that the larger tailpipes and heartier exhaust note are a dead giveaway of this car's heightened sporting intentions.

A five-door A1 is reportedly in the works, but the S1 will likely only be available in the three-door body style. Power is expected to come from a turbocharged, 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine which will be tuned to crank out around 180 horsepower, and Audi's seven-speed S-tronic gearbox will send that power to the front two wheels. That's right, folks - no Quattro versions of the A1 (or S1) are planned, so front-wheel drive it is.

This shiny red prototype looks to be nearing the final stages of development, which means we could see the production car as early as this year's Paris Motor Show. The S1 will certainly be a hot little number, and you can see the high-res spy shots for yourself in the gallery below.
Proficiency is a wonderful thing to see in any category - we can even watch a great lawn bowler do his thing for a minute or two. So, when it's something closer to our interests, like Audis and Photoshopping, we can hang in a little longer. What you see here isn't an Audi S1 - just an A1 made to look like one. Highly sped up, it takes a few minutes to make this happen. It will probably take Audi a little longer, but make no mistake, we hope they're watching. Follow the jump to watch the transformation unfold on video.

2011 Audi A1 - Click above for high-res image gallery

It should come as no surprise that Audi will offer a number of different variants of its new A1 compact hatch. What is surprising (kinda) is that the forthcoming S1 will be the first modern, performance-focused Audi to lack all-wheel drive.

According to Autocar, Audi intends to sell 100,000 A1s annually and to pull off those kind of numbers, it will have to diversify. Included in the plan is a five-door version, similar to the A1 Sportback concept seen in Paris, that's likely to ditch the contrast roof rails in favor of a more traditional top. The wagon will likely hit dealers abroad this time next year (production version in Paris?), with the same combination of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines as the three-door model.

A convertible version will likely arrive in 2012 with a fabric roof and 2+2 seating, with the S1 variant landing around the same time. When the S-ified A1 hits the market, it's likely to only be available in three-door form, packing a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-pot boosted to around 180 hp and sending power to the front wheels through Audi's seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. If you're disappointed by the lack of Quattro, don't be - the S1 won't make it to the U.S. anyway.

After watching from the sidelines for years as arch-rival BMW found success with the Mini brand, Audi is finally gearing up to jump into the scrum with the new A1. But unlike the Mini One (which slots below the Cooper in overseas markets), Audi doesn't intend to target the budget market. Instead, the new A1 will take aim directly at the Mini Cooper.

Don't expect to see any engine badges on the back of the four-ringed Polo, however, as Audi reportedly intends on keeping the displacement on the A1 hidden. An S1 is tipped to be in the works, but short of that the only thing onlookers will have to distinguish one engine model from another is the exhaust note. Expect the pre-production A1 - previewed by the Metroproject and A1 Sportback concepts - to debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show with sales beginning later next year.

Click above for a gallery of the Esprit S1 from The Spy Who Loved Me

Hey, if you missed the For Yor Eyes Only Lotus Esprit sale a couple of years ago, your shot to own another Bond-driven Lotus is on the horizon. In December, Bonhams will auction one of the two 1976 Lotus Esprit S1s used in The Spy Who Loved Me. The film is well known for the car/motorcycle/helicopter chase that culminates with the Lotus flying into the drink and turning into a submarine (one of those famous prop cars sold last year); and the Stromberg hench-babe giving chase in a JetRanger turning into a charcoal briquette.

A look at the photos Bonhams includes with its listing make it pretty clear that the interior used in the chase sequence's dialogue scenes between Roger Moore and Barbara Bach did not match the one in the actual car being auctioned. The proud new owner of this one will surely revel in the splendor of its green-and-red plaid motif! Bonham's expects this Esprit to fetch more than £80,000 -- a healthy premium over what less famous S1s go for on the open market.. Still, we'd fork it over in about two seconds if we had that kind of walking around money. For some of us, this car was our first exposure to the Esprit, and it looks as good as ever. (Even better with Barbara Bach riding shotgun...)

Follow the jump to relive The Spy Who Loved Me's chase sequence.

Gallery: 1976 Lotus Esprit S1 - The Spy Who Loved Me

[Sources: BBC, Bonham's]
Continue reading Bond's The Spy Who Loved Me Lotus Esprit hits the auction block

Bond's The Spy Who Loved Me Lotus Esprit hits the auction block originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 09:28:00 EST.
While our crew in Detroit was busy bringing you all the latest from the 2008 North American International Auto Show, across the pond the Belgians were holding the European Motor Show. And with all the major automakers putting on the ritz in Detroit, smaller manufacturers took center stage in Brussels.

One of the vehicles making its debut in Belgium was the Ivicta S1, a British-made GT that recently underwent some revisions. Whereas the previous version was strictly a two-seater, the revised interior on the new S1 now includes rear seats. A range of Ford-sourced V8s are available, with the top-of-the-line version producing 600 horsepower and capable of propelling the S1 600 to 60 mph in under four seconds. Invicta's engineers have moved the engine rearwards in the bay and sandwiched the fuel tank under the rear seats to improve the S1's balance, as well. The car's body is made from carbon-fiber, bonded to a tubular steel spaceframe chassis that optimizes rigidity and crashworthiness while keeping the car's weight down to 1,380kg.

Invicta originally began making cars in 1925 but closed in 1933, before the original S1 resurrected the name in 2002 at the Birmingham auto show. The company only makes one product, and only builds one per month.

Such a vehicle will assuredly be dubbed the A1, slotting below the A3, and aimed squarely at other German luxury offerings, as well as the MINI Cooper.

Andrea Rosati takes several cues from Audi's Shooting Brake concept, but manages to utilize more of the lines from the recently released TT and R8. The corporate gaping maw front clip is present and accounted for, as are the seven-spoke wheels pulled straight from the RS4. From there however, the diversions become more apparent, with a much more upright stance that runs counter to Audi's current low slung offerings, as well as narrower headlamps that are pulled back at a more extreme angle to the outsides of the vehicle, starkly contrasting the lights currently employed by the TT.

Although we have normally dispatch most artist's renderings as pure speculation, there were a few trick elements that we'd like to see utilized on future Audis: namely, the angular central exhaust outlet and the Audi-logo-turned-third-brake-light.

Follow the "Read" link for all the renderings, a few pics of the Shooting Brake Concept and some speculation on possible powertrains.

[Source: Infomotori.co.uk]

Future speculation on the Audi A1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Jan 2007 06:51:00 EST. The sound never gets old, and the 20something-year-old Audi looks as ferocious today as it did back in it's Group B salad days.
