The all-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, designated W222, is one of the most highly anticipated debuts of its model year. Every generation of the flagship sedan has broken new ground in technology and innovation for the entire industry, and the German automaker appears determined to raise the bar much further with its latest arrival as it promises to deliver "the best automobile in the world." Mercedes-Benz has just released nearly two dozen interior images of the new sedan, showing off style in design, craftsmanship in execution and pioneering advancements in technology.

Unlike all previous generations - the first S-Class officially arrived in 1972 - the 2014 model completely discards a traditional instrument cluster and replaces it with two high-resolution color displays in 8:3 format with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches (the outgoing model's gauges were a mix of digital and analog). The left unit displays traditional analog gauges (digitally, of course) while the right unit is reserved for infotainment and comfort settings with the automaker's all-new mBrace2 - a cloud-based entertainment and information delivery system that is rolling out this year.

Passengers will be pampered with "energizing" massage, active seat ventilation with reversing fans, heated seats, heated steering wheel and heated armrests (door and center). A total of 14 separately actuated air bladders in the backrest of the seats will provide six different massage programs. There are also "beltbags" (airbags in the seatbelt webbing - not unlike the Ford Explorer) and the limousine models feature a reclining rear seat that moves the front passenger seat completely out of the way for additional room.

Mercedes calls its newly developed climate control "thermotronic," as it features completely autonomous adjustment options for driver and passenger. It also includes improved filtering utilizing ionization, and an "active perfuming system," as part of its "air-balance" package, to individually customize the smell of the vehicle interior - finally making those pine tree car fresheners obsolete.

Continue reading Mercedes-Benz releases stunning first images of 2014 S-Class

Mercedes-Benz releases stunning first images of 2014 S-Class originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Mar 2013 13:01:00 EST.
Based on the lightly camouflaged spy shots of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class we've seen lately, it hasn't taken a vivid imagination to picture what the next iteration of this big luxury sedan will look like. Even so, we now we have our first unobstructed views of the redesigned S-Class, codenamed W222, as it has just been caught out flaunting for some promo shots.

The first thing we notice about the new S-Class design is the disappearance of the last generation's flared wheel arches. Yet the new design adds even more character with bodyside creases similar to the CLS-Class and some elements reminiscent of 2007's F700 Concept, including the massive grille and vertical LED taillights. Other key details include a large panoramic roof and the narrow exhaust outlets, but the large LED-trimmed headlights and the aggressive front fascia are probably the biggest departure from the current design. With these spy shots, we also catch a blurry shot of the interior, but we've seen a practically uncovered look at the new S-Class' cabin back in January.

Overall, the next S-Class sports an expressive and premium new look, but as far as all-new designs go, it's quite conservative - a move no doubt fitting for these lean financial times.
2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class caught totally undisguised originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Mar 2013 09:28:00 EST.
To the concern of nobody in particular, Mercedes-Benz will not be re-upping its Maybach line of ultra-luxury limousines. No, instead the German automaker will be stretching its already roomy S-Class, to make this upcoming 600 Pullman version of the decked-out beast.

The car in our new gallery of spy shots is sporting beefy B-pillars and a massive set of rear doors that should allow perfectly graceful ingress and egress from what is likely to be a palatial rear space. (In one photo we can even see a long-wheelbase S-Class in line with the new Pullman, handily exhibiting the size of the new variant.) The exterior modifications are otherwise obscured, though we can guess at revised front and rear fascia and lighting elements, based on both end being heavily taped for these test runs.

It's a good bet that the Pullman will make use of M-B's twin-turbocharged V12 engine, though sources indicate that a hybrid version might eventually be in the offing, as well.
Next Mercedes S-Class stretching into this 600 Pullman limo originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Mar 2013 14:16:00 EST. WorldCarFans was reportedly sent what looks like a dealer presentation on the coming V222 series 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. There have been hints for years as to the kinds of technology the world's best-selling large luxury sedan will contain, and it appears those hints had some foundation. To be shown in Germany on May 15 before a launch window that runs from September to November this year, the evolutionary design will be built of aluminum and steel, using that lighter material for the front end, roof and "detached body parts."

Among the new options buyers will be able to choose are the Rear Seat Package with rear seatbelt airbags and active buckles that extend, a Warmth and Comfort Package with heated seats front and back, heated armrests and side panels, and power rear seats with active ventilation and memory function. There's a chauffeur seating option that comes with 10-way adjustable rear seats, an extendable footrest and folding tables in the front seatbacks.

Blatant technology will be on display via two 12.3-inch screens, one for the dash cluster and one for the COMAND infotainment screen on the instrument panel. The third generation of Nightview Assist Plus will be able to detect animals as well as humans, and the next generation of Surround View will provide high-res views all around the car. A touchpad and a color head-up display will arrive in 2015. It will be the first Mercedes-Benz to utilize LED lighting everywhere, inside and outside the car.

Other premium touches will be available Hot Stone Massage seats with seven massaging programs, a Burmester Reference sound system and an Air Balance Package that filters, and ionizes cabin air and can emit a fragrance through the HVAC system. The S550 will come first, in September, followed by the S550 4Matic and S63 AMG over the next two months. Have a look at the slides in the gallery, it looks like the coming S is going to be a lot of car.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class presentation leaked, debuting in May originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Feb 2013 16:58:00 EST.
During a product briefing earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz told us that 2013 would be the "year of the S-Class." Makes sense, too, since the flagship Mercedes is so very close to finally showing its production-ready face. But the high-tech saloon isn't the only S-Class to talk about this year - quite the contrary. Seen here in decidedly revealing camouflage, the new S-Class Coupe will be joining its four-door compadre in the not-too-distant future, as well.

When it launches, the S-Class Coupe will officially do away with the CL-Class nomenclature. This doesn't come as a huge shock. After all, when the new E-Class coupe and convertible were launched, it officially marked the end of the long-running CLK-Class designation.

Thanks to the interesting camouflage seen here, we have a very good glimpse at how the S-Class Coupe will look when all of the molding and swirly paper are peeled off. Rakish body lines pulled from the CLS-Class meet a much more dynamic front fascia. Out back, there are horizontal taillamps rather than the vertical units used on the current car, and the whole package seems very svelte. Our spy photographer even posits that this will be "the best-looking car from Mercedes-Benz in ages."

But while 2013 may be the year of the S-Class, that could just be limited to spy shots of the new coupe. The production car may not be shown until sometime in 2014, likely in Geneva.
New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe spied in revealing state of dress originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Feb 2013 14:01:00 EST.
As evidenced by how little camouflage the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been caught wearing lately, it can't be too much longer until the car will get its official debut. In our newest shots of the yacht-sized luxo sedan, the cladding still covers up the headlights, front fascia and most of the rear end, but we finally have an almost undisguised look at the rest of the car's lines.

Considering previous spy shots had more camo that better (or fully) concealed the S-Class' body, some of the more obvious things we see in these images include the prominent grille, the CLS-Class-inspired bodyside creases, the pointed trunk opening and, most interestingly, a lack of fancy exhaust outlets. Unlike other S-Class prototypes we've seen, this car does not have integrated outlets, but it does have two pipes on the left side of the car. All current S-Class models in the US and Europe feature a dual exhaust layout on each side of the car, so while some of our questions about the car get answered, it would appear that more are just arising.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class spied once again originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Feb 2013 17:44:00 EST.
Generally speaking, when you illegally park your car, you're likely to get ticketed and towed, but there is probably at least one motorist in Scotland who wishes that was the case. After workers had blocked off a portion of the parking lot for the Edinburgh Waverley railway station, the driver of this Mercedes-Benz S-Class reportedly moved some of the barriers to park in one of the empty spots.

Rather than having the vehicle towed, the work crew simply tore up the asphalt around the leaving just the one parking spot intact, and as you can see in the image above (posted to the Twitter account of Harold Norstad), the crew even built a small asphalt ramp so the car could get off its blacktop pedestal. Since this happened last week, there's no word as to whether the car was eventually moved or towed for the resurfacing work to continue.

Let this be a warning...
UK workers strand car on island of asphalt to keep working originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 08:30:00 EST.
With the redesigned 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class getting closer to production, the camera-wielding crew over at Autospies somehow managed to get inside of the car to snap some detailed spy shots. As the prototypes continue to shed camouflage, it would appear that Mercedes-Benz is getting closer to unveiling the car, and with the Geneva and New York auto shows coming up, it could be sooner rather than later.

From what we can see of this car's interior, the overall look of the S-Class' cabin isn't a ground-breaking departure from the current car, but it has been completely redesigned with more advanced technology. The styling is now even more upscale with larger swaths of wood, more shapely door panels (without the built-in armrest cubbies) and the concept-like two-spoke steering wheel. The highlight of this car though is probably the two massive digital screens with one being used for driver information and the other used for navigation, audio and infotainment systems. One other detail we noticed about this car is that it was equipped with the new 360-degree camera that debuted on the new GL-Class and will also be used on the 2014 E-Class. We also know that the next-gen S-Class will be getting the new cloud-based MBrace2 infotainment system.

As for the exterior design, it looks like the next S-Class will carry a similar profile as the current car, but we can see through the camouflage that the new styling will fit in better with current Mercedes-Benz products. Up front, the grille is much larger is flanked by aggressive LED-trimmed headlights, while the rear view of the car shows us the LED brake light now at the top of the rear window, a more pointed trunk opening and a more squared-off rear fascia with exhaust outlets pushed to the corners.
2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class interior caught in spy shots originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 15:31:00 EST.
It turns out Ford isn't the only automaker worried about car fire recalls these days. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today issuing a recall for potential fires on various 2011 and 2012 model year Mercedes-Benz vehicles, occurring from a fault with a fuel filter flange. The problem stems from an issue in the molding process that can allow the flange to crack, leak gasoline and possibly cause a fire.

Only a small number (5,800) of vehicles are affected by the recall, but it includes a total of eight different models (C300, CL550, CL63 AMG, E350, GLK350, S400 Hybrid, S550 and S63 AMG) across five vehicle lines (C-Class, CL-Class, E-Class, GLK-Class and S-Class). To fix the potentially hazardous problem, dealers will replace the fuel filter as a part of the recall, which goes into effect next month.

For the full list of affected models, check out the official NHTSA recall notice posted after the jump.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz recalling 5,800 vehicles over potential fires

Mercedes-Benz recalling 5,800 vehicles over potential fires originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Dec 2012 18:31:00 EST.
Mercedes-Benz took a moment at the Paris Motor Show to display its Aesthetics S Concept. Built as a combination static, physical sculpture and audio-visual presentation, the design exercise lends a glimpse at what we can expect to see from the next-generation S-Class. Mercedes-Benz projected a number of scenes onto the relief to highlight the design's lines and lineage, including images of W189, W108 and W126 S-Class models. Aligning the images of the S-Class ancestors with the new designs is a clever way to draw parallels between new and old.

Gordon Wagener, head of design for Mercedes-Benz, says the Aesthetics S Concept does more than point toward what's coming down the pike for the S-Class. The display also outlines what's in store for the rest of the company's products. Take a look at the Aesthetics S Concept in the video below for a better idea of what the next-generation of Mercedes-Benz products may look like.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz previews next S-Class with Aesthetics S Concept

Mercedes-Benz previews next S-Class with Aesthetics S Concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 17:44:00 EST.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is no ordinary car, so it gets no ordinary teasers. Instead of a single photo with a couple of artistic graphical strokes to whet appetites for the redesigned 2013 S-Class, we get the Aesthetics S sculpture and notice of a vernissage at the Paris Motor Show.

Called "an artistic glimpse of the design of the luxury saloon of the foreseeable future," the Aesthetics S will be our preview into the look of the defining premium luxury sedan.

The preview will come in the form of the debut of this "relief-like sculpture" alongside light projections as the shape is revealed in three acts "using a modern means of design and implementation." And to make sure everyone there knows their history, the <strike>Pink Floyd laser-light show</strike> projection event will involve the W189, W108 and W126 S-Classes as well.

Not to be considered a concept-only one-off, Mercedes' head of design said that whatever we see will "put a face to our design philosophy over the coming years." Scroll down for a press release that thinks very highly of itself, and we'll be bringing the Aesthetics S to life for you from the floor of the Paris show later this month.
Continue reading Mercedes bringing Aesthetics S Concept to Paris, hints at 2013 S-Class

Mercedes bringing Aesthetics S Concept to Paris, hints at 2013 S-Class originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 11:26:00 EST.
If you have the means, we highly recommend picking one up.

Sure, Ferris may have spoken those words in reference to a classic Ferrari California - well, actually, a replica of a classic Ferrari - but he could just as easily have been speaking of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class AMG. As we realized the last time we found ourselves ensconced behind the wheel of one, in that case a 2012 S63 model, we compared it to a spacecraft bound for Mars... meaning it ought to handle anything us mere terrestrial beings can throw its way with aplomb.

Naturally, though, Mercedes-Benz can't sit back and rest on its laurels, and since the current model, known internally as the W221, has been on the market since 2006, its no surprise that its replacement has been spotted running around the streets of the Nürburgring.

As you can see above, this AMG-fettled S-Class features a slightly lowered chassis along with side sill extensions, a rear diffuser and a modified front fascia. We also note predictably massive wheels wrapped in wide, sticky rubber. Though this model is missing them, our spy shooters tell us that, by the time this beast makes its way into production, it will sport quad exhaust tips that will exhale the spent gasses emitted by what we presume will be a turbocharged V8 of 5.5 liters.
Next Mercedes-Benz S-Class spotted with AMG trimmings originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 19:28:00 EST.
We've seen some rather unfortunately garish chrome-jobs in our day, and yes, some have even ladled on the shiny stuff in gold. Many of those have also been Mercedes-Benz vehicles. But while we've come to expect that kind of bling from owners with cash coming out of their Ferragamo shoes, we didn't expect the same treatment to be carried out by Mercedes-Benz itself on its own vehicles.

We were wrong. Because that's precisely what the German automaker had in store for this year's Cannes International Film Festival. For the awarding of the prestigious 65th Palme d'Or, Benz rolled out a fleet of vehicles wrapped in gold in which it shuttled around movie stars and other celebrities. Among the attendees were the CLS four-door coupe, ML sport-ute and S-Class limousine.

The AMG division was also on hand to show off the new SL65 and offer celebrities a chance to drive their latest offerings. Hopefully those convinced on the Cote d'Azur to place an order will have the good sense to forgo the gilded treatment, though.
We've seen weirder camouflage. But despite the fact that this next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class prototype looks like it drove through a garbage bag warehouse, we now have a very clear glimpse at some of the new car's details - namely, the shapely front fascia.

Merc's new flagship takes many of its new design cues from the F700 concept that debuted back in 2007, specifically the larger, more upright grille and the redesigned headlamps that now incorporate LED running lights (just like what we've seen on the new SL and GL models). The big sedan's overall shape doesn't change too much from the car that's currently on sale, though things seem to be a little swoopier for this new generation.

Under the hood, we can expect Mercedes' latest engines to be on tap, including the 4.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8 as well as some V6 options. Naturally, an AMG model will follow suit, likely using the new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 in the S63 AMG.

Look for the redesigned S-Class to officially bow later this year.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class ain't no bag lady originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 May 2012 15:59:00 EST.
When Daimler let slip that Maybach was on the chopping block, the German automaker reportedly insisted that ultra-luxury editions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class would replace the doomed marque. We're all for a smattering of low volume, seriously pricey S-Class variants, but will the richest and most influential Maybach buyers feel the same way?

Automotive News reports that Bentley is betting that stars like Jay-Z and Samuel L. Jackson will want more than a gussied-up Benz, and the luxury car make is sending out olive branches in the form of a letter campaign. The premium Volkswagen brand is asking the high-rollers to step into a Bentley Mulsanne or perhaps a top-shelf Continental GT. To help persuade VIPs to switch to Bentley, the automaker is inviting select Maybach owners to tour its Crewe, England home.

Given the fact that many typical soccer moms and dads can afford an ML-Class, we can see why some movie stars and sultans would want to steer clear of the Three-Pointed Star. But is Bentley really going to gain much by wooing the 200 annual Maybach buyers? If a few more rap stars roll in a Bentley in their next music video, then the answer would appear to be yes.
Bentley courting Maybach celebs with letter-writing campaign originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 13:59:00 EST.
Sometime before the end of this century, humans will travel to Mars. The longest manned journey ever attempted will take the explorers at least 34 million miles over the course of many months, at best. The vehicle necessary to support such an odyssey will need to be spacious, comfortable, technically advanced, incredibly safe and very powerful.

Before plotting the future spacecraft's design, we suggest the engineers take a close look at the 2012 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG for ideas.

Of course, we don't think the S63 is fit for interplanetary travel - micrometeorites and ultraviolet radiation would likely wreak havoc on its expensive and vogue matte finish Magno Platinum paint - but we do feel it is one of the most spacious and luxurious rocket ships that someone outside of a space agency can put in their personal hangar.

During our week with the AMG-tuned S-Class, its four wheels never left the surface of planet Earth, but we did load it up and make a long weekend trek to Palm Springs. How did this twin-turbocharged sedan handle the long outing and subsequent run into the mountains? Does it drive ponderously, or is the big Benz agile and athletic? Most importantly, what's not to like with this two-and-one-half ton almighty giant?

2012 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Mercedes-Benz is making a big splash at CES this year, finally bringing a booth to the party and trotting out Daimler head Dr. Dieter Zetsche to keynote Tuesday morning's festivities.

The big news is the introduction of mBrace2, Mercedes' new cloud-based entertainment and information delivery system that debuts on the all-new SL roadster and proliferating through the Benz lineup in 2013.

We just wrapped up a hands-on with the prototype system (coming soon), but if you're looking for a thoroughly updated COMAND interface, you're in for disappointment.

The same beige and black user interface carries over with mBrace2, but there's attractive news on the horizon. Mercedes tells us that an all-new and completely redesigned interface is due to debut on the 2014 S-Class, which will drop the 90s-era graphics for a more modern, intuitive design. And if it's anything like the system Mercedes showed off with the Concept A-Class, things are finally looking up for Benz infotainment.
2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class to feature all-new infotainment system originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 13:31:00 EST.
At the end of the day, every mass-market automaker is nothing more than a company looking for profits. And while you can have a great-looking vehicle that performs well and draws critical acclaim, but if it doesn't sell and it doesn't have decent margins, it doesn't do the company much good. So when it comes down to pure profit, what automobiles are the biggest cash cows?

That's what analyst Max Warbuton aimed to find out. With the help of his team at Bernstein Research, Warbuton looked at the automotive population and created this list of the twelve best money-makers since 1990. According to Automotive News, Warbuton said the top twelve cars and trucks all combine "high prices, huge volume and long periods of production that spread development costs over a long period." While we might quibble that not all of the entries are high in price, the volume side of Warburton's equation makes a lot of sense, especially considering that the Number One most profitable vehicle of all time is - glance back up at the lead image once more - the Ford F-Series.
F-150 aside, all of the American full-size pickups did particularly well in this study, with the Ram 1500 and General Motors twins (Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra) filling out the second and third place spots. (No surprise, given that body-on-frame vehicles like pickups and SUVs are known to be cash cows). German and Japanese automakers round out the top twelve, and we urge you to click through our attached image gallery to see exactly which vehicles have been raking in the most cash for their companies over the past 21 years.
These are the industry's most profitable cars and trucks originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 Nov 2011 19:59:00 EST.
Nearly 7,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles are being recalled for potentially leaky fuel filters. Included under the recall are diesel (read: Bluetec) versions of the 2011 E-Class, GL-Class, M-Class, and R-Class, as well as the 2012 S-Class.

The 2011 model year vehicles being recalled were built between January 2010 and April 2011. NHTSA says fuel filters on affected vehicles "may develop leaks from the area around the heating component."
Mercedes-Benz USA will be contacting owners for free inspection and replacement, beginning in November.
