Rutledge Wood took home the checkered flag at this year's Toyota Pro/Celebrity race at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. The Top Gear USA presenter, Fox Sports commentator and Honda Wagovan owner managed to take pole position in qualifying, but lost his lead early in the race to Mark Steines. Steines has competed in the Pro/Celebrity race four times so far, but the Hallmark channel host of Home and Family couldn't quite hold on to the lead. Wood eventually made up the ground he had lost for the win. This year, all the participants went fender to fender in identically prepared Scion FR-S racers.

Meanwhile, Adam Carolla took first in the Pro category, and Toyota donated $5,000 on behalf of each participant to Racing for Kids. The charity benefits children's hospitals in the Long Beach area, and this year Toyota donated a total of $90,000. Check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading Rutledge Wood wins Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach

Rutledge Wood wins Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 21 Apr 2013 11:59:00 EST.
The Stig makes his return to Top Gear USA on the History Channel tonight, though it looks like the circumstances could be better. The upside is that Rutledge Wood, Adam Ferrara and Tanner Foust appear to have built themselves a Road-Warrior-iffic late-1990s Toyota Camry complete with an electric fence. The Stig chases down his prey with, naturally, a Panther. Seems appropriate.

Looking more closely, it almost seems like a Camry body was bolted atop a truck frame, and you'd expect something like a Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor to be the most menacing Panther, but the Stig does a good job being scary in a Lincoln Town Car. The only way to know for sure what went down is to watch tonight. Scroll down to check out a clip, and hit the gallery for some shots you'll only find on Autoblog.
Continue reading Watch Top Gear USA try to outrun The Stig in an apocalyptic Camry

Watch Top Gear USA try to outrun The Stig in an apocalyptic Camry originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Mar 2013 16:58:00 EST. Episode #319 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week, Dan Roth, Chris Paukert and Jeff Ross talk about the Chicago Auto Show, the new Holden VF Commodore and Paukert's trip to the Arctic Circle with The List. Dan and Zach took time to have a chat with Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood from Top Gear, as well, and that's included in this week's action-packed podcast. We wrap with a couple of your questions, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time. Keep reading for our Q&A module for you to scroll through and follow along, too. Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood are set to return to our television screens. The trio are back in action for the third season of Top Gear USA, and this time around, they'll be exploring even farther flung destinations. From testing the best college car for a road trip to Mexico to building a machine capable of taking on the apocalypse, the guys have plenty of entertaining stunts planned for the new season. You can check out the first episode of the season tonight at 9:00 PM EST on the History Channel.

Can't wait that long? We've got a teaser from the crew's jaunt to Mexico below. You can watch the guys play an automotive cross between pin the tail on the donkey, pinata and tag in a massive mud pit with a trio of hoopties. Our money was on Foust and his Eagle Talon, but we've been wrong before. As always, it's not any fun unless someone's life is in danger.
Continue reading Top Gear USA returns tonight [w/video]

Top Gear USA returns tonight [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST.
While it still hasn't earned the cult-like following of the original Top Gear (currently aired on the BBC), our own Top Gear USA is getting better and better with each subsequent episode. Rutledge Wood, Adam Ferrara and Tanner Foust are developing much-needed chemistry and the show is entertaining (even if you aren't a car guy).

That said, Top Gear USA has earned enough kudos (aka advertising dollars) to warrant a third season, complete with sixteen new episodes (six will be aired before the holiday break, followed by another ten early next year). Add those to the 26 episodes already shot during the first two seasons, and trio have hosted enough shows for a solid DVD collection. Catch the trio near the end of summer, as the first episode is scheduled to air on August 14 on the History Channel.
Top Gear USA returns Aug. 14 for 16-episode season originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jul 2012 08:28:00 EST.

The first season of Top Gear USA was a little rough, and the statistical proof of this came in the form of lukewarm ratings. But instead of dumping the show in favor of more Pawn Stars re-runs, The History Channel decided to give the auto-focused program another chance at success. Good thing, too, as the second season of Top Gear USA was more refined, more entertaining and, we're guessing, it brought in more ad dollars. That's because the show's ratings jumped by 30 percent, with the much-sought 25-54 demographic jumping by 35 percent.

Thanks to those 1.9 million average viewers, History decided to extend season two by eight more episodes. Hosts Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood and the crew are already in production, and History tells us the new episodes will feature "more exciting challenges, crazy antics and legendary vehicles."

The extended season will include Adam and Rutledge coming up with dangerous ways to charge an electric vehicle while driving and Tanner heading to England to drive the Noble M600. The show hosts will even whip up some homemade limos out of some funky rides, and use the stretch monstrosities to chauffeur celebrities to the Emmy Awards.

Like we said, the first season was pretty average (and sometimes unwatchable), but the second run of shows were far more entertaining. We're thinking that a larger audience can only lead to more investment in the show, which should be a good thing. Hit the jump to read The History Channel press release.

Continue reading Top Gear USA extends second season

Top Gear USA extends second season originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 18:01:00 EST.
America's very own version of Top Gear is set to hit airwaves for its second season. A new round of hijinks on the History Channel begins July 24. Seeing as the Top Gear Test Track sits just 15 minutes from your author's house, we thought it might be nice to pop in and pay the guys a visit. We wound up getting more than we bargained for, however, because The Stig was also on set... armed with the keys to a Lotus Evora S.

"Shotgun!"

The hosts could wait, because we had a date with a man/woman/robot known as The Stig. The Top Gear Test Track was clear, our butts were belted into the passenger seat and a solitary thumbs up from the man in white was our clue that this was go time.

Keep reading to learn more about our lap, and the upcoming season of Top Gear.
Continue reading Top Gear USA Season 2 Preview, with bonus Stig lap [w/video]

Top Gear USA Season 2 Preview, with bonus Stig lap [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 19:57:00 EST.
The Fourth of July is right around the corner, which means fireworks, alcohol-fueled patriotism and dogs hiding under beds. July also holds another day on the calender that's cause for celebration, at least for fans of U.S. Top Gear. Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood are back for season two, which premieres July 24 at 10pm EST on the History Channel.

We fully expect the comment section below to be filled with folks on both sides of the fence. Some of you are ready to support the show, others wrote it off before episode one even aired, and many are caught somewhere in the middle.

We're already hearing rumblings that the hosts are feeling much more comfortable with their chemistry this season and that the entire TG USA team is feeling more confident about the shows they are about to deliver, but the proof will be in this season's pudding.
U.S. Top Gear returns July 24 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 11:01:00 EST.
Rutledge Wood, part of the Top Gear trio here in the States that went out to find the best car from GM's recent past, (wisely) picked a Buick Roadmaster as his steed. He then used the wagon to wind up victorious over the choices of his co-hosts. Now, Rutledge has shown that he truly cares about the LT1-powered five-door, as he just purchased a 1996 example to put in his own driveway.

Regardless of your stance on the U.S.-version of Top Gear, you have to admire a man who understands the timeless appeal of a good station wagon. Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon owners should look upon the Buick Roadmaster with a fond gaze, because the Roadmaster is part of your hot-rod wagon's DNA.

This may not be the 2011 Buick Roadmaster that Rutledge was hoping for, but we're pretty sure he's still smitten with his new ride.
Top Gear USA host Rutledge Wood picks up a Buick Roadmaster wagon originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 May 2011 11:30:00 EST.
In an effort to gain some viewership, Top Gear America has teamed up with NASCAR to rename the May 28 Nationwide Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway the Top Gear 300. To tease season two of the American spinoff of the so-far superior English car show, clips from Top Gear America will be broadcast during the race.

Top Gear America clips will also air on Charlotte Motor Speedway's 200-foot high-definition jumbotron, the biggest high-def TV in the world. That's gonna make Rutledge's head look extra big, no? (Just kidding, Mr. Wood, your head's just fine.)

Details are scant as to what TGUSA paid for all this, but we can't imagine it came cheap. The green flag waves on the Top Gear 300 at 2:30 EST on May 28. Only time will tell if this move ends up boosting TGUSA's ratings for season two.
Before you Top Gear USA haters get too excited at that last sentence, let us explain further. James May hates the Top Gear USA presenters... because he believes they are destined for greatness.

Why exactly does he feel this way? Because of their names. May believes he's "lumbered with a single-syllable surname evoking a popular bank holiday," while Foust's name suggests he can do things with a car that others only dream about - and he really can.

Rutledge Wood, meanwhile, has a name that leads May to believe he should be the next great American novelist, and Adam Ferrara is one letter away from being a child of Enzo.

Whatever May thinks, his discussion of America's Top Gear and its hosts is a great read. We're not saying his insight will cause you to give Tanner, Rutledge and Adam a bit of a break for the first few years... but it might have you questioning your hate, just for a moment.
Jay Leno will play host to Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood and Adam Ferrara tonight at 11:35 pm on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. While cars will no doubt be a central point of the discussion, we're curious to see what Jay has to say about the show.
The logo. The exotic car-filled studio. The engine block coffee table. The Stig. The Star in a Reasonably Priced Car. It all seemed so familiar. The inaugural episode of Top Gear USA aired Sunday night at 10pm EST/9C on the History Channel with a lot of what made the original British show an international hit, but without those three dynamic blokes that have made the UK version so great. Or the amazing producers who put that show together each week. Instead, we get new producers, a new set, and new promise in hosts Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood.

The first episode of Top Gear USA started off with a bang by transitioning from an original Shelby Cobra to the best modern interpretation of the big engine on wheels: the Dodge Viper. The American-made missile was driven by Tanner Foust who was charged with outrunning a Cobra attack helicopter. The Viper was fitted with a missile detection simulator that showed when the supercar was being missile-locked and "hit" by the chopper. To win this competition, Foust and his navigator/co-host Rutledge Wood needed to blast across town and back before being hit by the chopper three times. We won't tell you how it ends, but we will say this first stunt showed that while the camera work and editing isn't yet up to Top Gear UK levels of excellence, the content is still engaging and fun to watch.

Top Gear is something of an institution among the car-obsessive types who come to Autoblog to keep up with the comings and goings of the automotive world. So it seems fitting that we should all take time out of our busy schedules to talk about the upcoming American version of the hit British show that debuts on the History Channel next Sunday, November 21st, don't you think?

We had an impromptu phone call with the three hosts of the show, comedian Adam Ferrara, racing analyst Rutledge Wood and professional racer Tanner Foust, and managed to record the entire half-hour-long conversation. You'll have to wait until tomorrow when we release the next episode of the Autoblog Podcast (subscribe in iTunes so you don't miss it) to listen to the whole exchange, but in the meantime we've gone ahead and typed up some of the more interesting tidbits and nuggets of knowledge from our time with the Top Gear USA hosts.

Autoblog: What are your current dream cars?

Adam Ferrara: A current dream car for me... uh, a '57 Starfire Olds.

Tanner Foust: I've been lucky because I did another show where I got to drive exotics around... I drove a [Pagani] Zonda. And, ya know, it seemed a little gaudy over the top, but meeting Pagani, who's just completely an eccentric, brilliant, rich car fanatic and completely anal retentive, it all came together with the planets aligned and made this amazing Zonda.

Rutledge Wood: I'm gonna say a little bit combo dream garage... it would be the A Team van, obviously. The '86 Countach that I had a poster of when I was growing up... it was white.

AF: Yeah, Okay. Well, first of all, I didn't know we got more than one.

RW: The A Team van... I'm just saying, the three of us could just cruise around.

AF: But you didn't say you were going to share and now you're picking another one...

RW: Okay, I'm just sayin' that would be fine. And another one. Don't tell anyone else from the South I said it, but a Ferrari Enzo would be great.

AF: But if you want more than one, be honest. You want an '83 Civic wagon because I'm sure you need some more parts.

RW: [Laughs] When I'm done with it, it will be my daily driven dream car. So yes.

AF: I want a Grand National. Put the Grand National down.

And so we did. Buick Grand National for Adam, a Pagani Zonda for Tanner and, um, a 1983 Honda Civic wagon for Rutledge... or maybe a Ferrari Enzo. Or the A Team van.

On Monday, October 18th 2010, Michael Harley and I had the opportunity to attend a taping of an episode of the upcoming Top Gear USA series. As we all know by now, the show is a new version of the BBC original and as a huge fan of that show, my expectations were set to "neutral" for the American spin-off. Harley and I entered an old airplane hangar located on the former El Toro Marine Base in Irvine, California and were immediately impressed by what we saw.

Top Gear is here in the United States. No, not the Top Gear USA team of Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood but the blokes from the BBC. Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond have been spotted driving a trio of excellent exotics in the Blue Ridge section of North Carolina.

If you happen to live in the area, be on the lookout for a Ferrari 458 Italia, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS. We imagine they'll be running three wide, engines roaring and cameras rolling.

UPDATE: Autoblog reader Jim spotted the Top Gear crew at VIR and snapped a few shots. We're guessing Hammond in the GT3 RS, Clarkson in the SLS and Captain Slow in the 458.

You all know that the long-awaited U.S. version of Top Gear is headed to The History Channel, and now it's time to get your first taste of the show. The first trailer for the show is online, and if it's any indication, Tanner Foust, Rutledge Wood and Adam Ferrara are going to win over viewers, and the program will not stray from the BBC original's successful formula of cool tests and zany challenges.

In fact, one of the new show's challenges is the trailer's centerpiece. In involves the hosts determining the best $1,000 car by putting a trio of them through a punishing "moonshine run" dirt course. The ride selected for the teaser is Ferrara's, the airborne 1976 Cadillac Deville Calais seen above (it could be a '75, but we're pretty certain that's the '76 grille pattern). How does a malaise-era Caddy handle a landing after catching that much air? About as well as you'd imagine - this isn't the make-believe world of '70s cop shows, after all. It's hilarious.

Bottom line: The hosts exude great chemistry and the motoring action is pretty much everything you'd want and expect from a program calling itself Top Gear. Still under wraps, however, is the Stig. The suspense is killing us. This looks like a completely fun show. Hit the jump to see for yourselves. Thanks to Chris for the tip!

And by Cobra, we mean the attack helicopter, not the FoMoCo-powered roadster. Sightings of the new cast of Top Gear America have been coming out of the wood work ever since the crew was spotted filming on Mulholland. From what we can tell, Tanner Foust and Rutledge Wood hopped on down to Georgia to film a segment involving none other than the mighty Dodge Viper and the mightier Cobra Attack Helicopter. If that sounds like a brawnier interpretation of the same bit the OG Top Gear pulled with a Lotus just a few short years back, you'd be right. Somehow, that doesn't make it any less awesome.

Luckily for the rest of the interwebs, a member of MX5 Atlanta was on hand to catch some of the action. User d.dutton9512 was not only able to see the Viper give besting the Cobra the old college try, but he also got to catch some of the dialogue between Foust and Wood. His verdict? Not half bad.

While we would love to be hearing that TGA is laying down its own mind-bending stunts instead of pulling from the Top Gear UK playbook, we're still happy to see the show actually filming instead of languishing in an NBC grave somewhere. We'll still reserve final judgment until the show actually airs, but for now, we're optimistic. Hop the jump to see some of the videos for yourself.
