2014 Audi RS7 is a 189-mph terror

If you have a burning desire to take yourself and four friends to 189 miles per hour, the 2014 Audi RS7 Sportback can help you out. The luxury hatchback bowed at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show today, complete with a 560-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine thrashing under the hood. Getting to 62 mph takes a shave under 3.9 seconds thanks in part to the 553 pound-feet of torque on hand from just 1,750 rpm. While the base car comes with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, customers can request the governor be removed by purchasing the dynamic package plus, upping the V-max to 189 mph.

Ludicrous? Sure, but Audi says the RS7 can also yield up to 25 mpg on the US scale. With a cylinder-on-demand system, the V8 can deactivate up to four cylinders by closing their valves. Once the driver gets frisky with the throttle, the engine automatically kicks from four-cylinder to eight-cylinder mode in a few hundredths of a second. The engine is bolted to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which pushes power to all four wheels. Rendered Speculation: Audi RS7 looks sinfully sweet

We haven't really heard much about the proposed Audi RS7 since we saw some potential spy shots early last year, but the crew over at Fourtitude.com has given us a whole new reason to lust after a high-strung version of Audi's four-door coupe. Using a mix of spy shots and traditional Audi RS cues, the site was able to get a good enough idea about the car to create some impressive renderings of RS7 from just about every angle.

Obvious RS cues include the oversized front air vents and mesh grille, but the site also did a great job in imagining what the rest of the car would look like including the rear diffuser with oval dual exhaust outlets and the big V-spoke large enough to accommodate the carbon ceramic brakes. Speculating about engines, the site seems to think that the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 from the S7 will stay under the hood, but power should take a significant jump from the current 414 horsepower up to well above the 500-hp mark.

Normally, any spy shots having to do with Audi's RS series involve large wheels, huge fender flares and low-profile tires. This potential prototype for the Audi RS7 Sportback, however, appears to be going incognito under standard A7 skin.

The dead giveaway that this A7 is more than meets the eye? The brakes. Specifically, our spy photographers tell us that they've seen prototypes of the standard S7 Sportback plenty of times, and none of those cars we fitted with brakes this large. Even so, the quad exhaust pipes out back are similar to what all of Audi's S models use, though we're told that when it hits production, the RS7 will use a large, dual-exhaust setup.

As for what's underhood, the latest speculation suggests that a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine will be in use, producing somewhere around 550 or 600 horsepower. This power will be managed by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and sent to all four wheels via Quattro all-wheel drive. Expect the production car - with the normal aggressive RS fittings - to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

Spy Shots: First look at Audi S7

Even though we won't see the production version of the standard Audi A7 until this year's Paris Motor Show, the men and women in Ingolstadt are already prepping a hotted-up version of the swoopy four-door coupe (we still aren't used to typing that), as seen here in this latest set of spy shots. Rumors have stated that a RS7 Sportback might debut alongside the A7 in Paris, complete with a 580-horsepower V10, and it would certainly be show-stopping if Audi could pull off having all three variants of the A7 range on hand.

As for the car spied here, we spot larger air intakes, a more robust wheel/tire package, bigger brakes and quad exhaust pipes, seemingly proving that this A7 will definitely arrive wearing an S badge. However, the camouflaged beast isn't as muscular as Audi's RS models, which leads us to believe that the mid-range S7 is what's under all of the swirly paper. As for what's housed beneath the hood, your guess is as good as ours, but something along the lines of Audi's new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 or the free-breathing 4.2-liter V8 could be in order.
