Hagerty Insurance, which specializes in covering cars already deemed classics, is out with its annual Hot List predicting this year's ten cars that will be future collectibles. Even though it stays under $100,000, it spans almost $74,000 in MSRPs starting with the $23,700 Ford Focus ST on the affordable end and peaking with the $97,395 SRT Viper.

Other notables include the Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 427, what with 2013 being both the 60th anniversary of the brand and the last year of the C6, the 505-horsepower 427 special edition being a send-off to the sports car that always does well in the last model year of a particular generation. The Tesla Model S collects yet another award for delivering a welcome and overdue shock to the electric-car game and is the only sedan to make the list, and the Subaru BRZ also adds to its trophy chest, the lightweight coupe doing so much with so little that it might be worth a packet after Father Time has waved his staff a few times.

You can check out the rest of Hagerty's picks in the press release below.
Continue reading Hagerty predicts this year's future classics

Hagerty predicts this year's future classics originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 17:59:00 EST.

Everything we said after driving the RS5 coupe still rings true, even after Audi has gone and ripped off its metal roof, replaced it with a big cloth version, and tossed us the keys. The 2014 Audi RS5 Cabriolet is another bold, big-boned airmobile to make open-top lovers swoon. There is absolutely nothing revolutionary to speak of here versus its hardtop counterpart, frankly, but tear-assing through the southern French hills as the brilliant sun warmed us is plenty good reason to talk a lot about it anyway. And hey, it beats frigid January in Detroit, where the RS5 Convertible is shortly to receive its US introduction.

One issue that could corrupt things a bit is the convertible's added weight factor. It's one thing when an Audi TT removes its top and gains 176 pounds, or when a Porsche Cayman morphs into a Boxster and gains 66 pounds; the effect on dynamics will still be acceptable. But when it comes to a huge-roof coupe like the RS5, that gain in mass becomes 400-plus pounds in cabrio form, for a grand curb weight of 4,461 pounds. As a number attached to this size of a car that's also branded with an RS badge promising raciness, we admittedly fretted. Then we drove the Audi RS5 Cabriolet to cheer up.

2014 Audi RS5 Cabriolet [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Jan 2013 11:57:00 EST.
We would never kick a 450-horsepower convertible out of bed, especially one as pretty as the 2013 Audi RS5 Cabriolet. We'll admit, the chrome wheels aren't really doing it for us - we much prefer the standard alloys - but nevertheless, there's a lot to like about this topless Audi.

Most importantly, the RS5 Cabriolet still uses Audi's naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 that's being discontinued elsewhere in the company's lineup. We adore this high-revving, fire-breathing engine, though we'd like it more if it were mated to a six-speed manual transmission rather than the car's standard seven-speed S-tronic gearbox. Still, the all-wheel-drive convertible can sprint to 62 miles per hour in just under five seconds on its way to a top speed of 155 mph (or 174 mph if you ask Audi nicely to remove the limiter).

While speaking with Autoblog at the Paris Motor Show, Scott Koegh, President of Audi's U.S. operations, confirmed the Cabriolet will arrive Stateside in the first quarter of 2013 as the newest member of the RS5 family.

"That car is a no-brainer," Koegh said. "We think our RS strategy fills the brand. We think adding this high-performance attribute is huge. TT RS is a classic example. The car sold out and rock-and-rolled extremely well."

The car goes on sale in Germany next summer, priced from €88,500, or about $111,500 based on current exchange rates. At this point, it's unclear whether the convertible will carry a 2013 or a 2014 model year designation, but we're banking on the latter as the Coupe model is already on sale here as a 2013. We're also guessing it'll be lot cheaper when it comes to America, however - the Coupe, which is already on sale, retails for under $70,000. Scroll down for the full press release.
For ten minutes, from 2:00 pm to 2:10 pm CET (8 am - 8:10 am EST) on September 6, Audi will be live-streaming the event that officially inaugerates the dual-clutched Quattro droptop with 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque.

Audi and Ducati. Two powerhouses in their respective realms, and as of recently the motorcycle brand belongs to Audi AG as part of Lamborghini. Inspired, perhaps, by the freshly forged relationship between he two companies, Audi has decided to examine how much the two share in their pursuit of glory at Pikes Peak by taking it on in tandem.

Of course, cameras were in place to capture the action as the hill-climb-ready RS5 and Ducati Mulitstrada took on all 12.42 miles and 156 tuns of the climb together. The stupendously high production value allows the you to take in the new, fully-paved course in all its glory.

Audi has released a teaser shot of its entrant in the 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb on its Facebook page. The teaser of the menacing coupe is also accompanied by a nice little video of Audi's past dominance. It's a nice refresher going into this weekend's hill climb, which was postponed by wildfires.

The first Audi entrant in the Hill Climb was in 1984, with Michele Mouton piloting an Audi Sport Quattro. Mouton won the even in 1985, and was unseated by Bobby Unser in 1986 in an Audi Sport Quattro S1. The S1 featured a turbocharged five-cylinder making 600 horsepower

From what we can tell from this shadowy shot, this RS5 has the gaping grill and lower valences typical of a vehicle wearing the Four Rings and an RS badge. At this angle, it looks similar to the RS5 that you can get from a dealer. The stock RS5 makes 450 horsepower from the brand's venerable 4.2-liter V8. Chances are this hill-climber will be putting out much more than that, though. We'll know for sure when it competes in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb on August 12, but while you're waiting, you can check out the video by scrolling below.

Continue reading Audi teases RS5 Pikes Peak Hill climb entrant [w/video]

Audi teases RS5 Pikes Peak Hill climb entrant [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Aug 2012 14:30:00 EST.
The highly anticipated Audi RS5 is finally on sale in the United States, and Audi has revealed that the high-performance sport coupe will be priced from $68,900, (*)not including $895 for destination.

Under the hood is Audi's tried and true, high-revving 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8, good for 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque here, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The RS5 also employs a sport rear differential that works with the Quattro all-wheel-drive system to better optimize the four-corner grip to offer rear-drive-like performance when needed. Audi states that the RS5 will sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds.

Don't get us wrong, we adore the free-breathing 4.2-liter mill, but it strikes us as odd that Audi wouldn't employ its new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 here. Under the hood of the A8, S6 and S7, this engine makes 420 hp and 406 lb-ft, and allows those bigger vehicles to run to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. Moreover, Audi offers the S8 with a boosted, 520-hp version of this engine, able to shoot the flagship to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.

Nothing like having your RS5 embarrassed by a luxury barge.

A month after paperwork for the RS5 Cabriolet was delivered into the California Air Resources Board for certification, the genuine item is being driven around the Nürburgring for a different kind of sign-off. The folks at CarPix caught the 450-horsepower Audi droptop at the German landmark.

When it's not being wrung out, we figure the cabriolet is being prepped for a debut at this fall's Paris Motor Show. You'll find its angles, hidden under the obligatory non-standard paint job, in the gallery of high-res photos.
Audi RS5 Cabriolet prototype leaves its lid on originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jul 2012 16:29:00 EST.
It looks as if Audi plans to bring the menacing RS5 Cabriolet to the U.S., according to Car and Driver. The 450-horsepower convertible showed up in an application for certification with the California Air Resources Board. Those filings are necessary to demonstrate that any new model sold in California adheres to the state's emission standards - a must for any vehicle that goes on sale in the States. While it's worth noting that automakers routinely certify models that may never show up on the U.S. market, that the dropehead RS5 is going through the approval process means the high-power convertible is one step closer to showing up in U.S. showrooms.

Audi has already confirmed the RS5 Coupe for the American market. Like the hardtop, the RS5 Cabriolet delivers 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque to the pavement via a dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel drive. Sounds like a party.
Audi RS5 Convertible headed to U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 03 Jun 2012 12:03:00 EST. Most of these national championships are contested by grids limited to just a handful of manufacturers, but like the BTCC, the Superstars series is made up of cars from a seemingly endless array of automakers. BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Jaguar, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are all represented in a grid of some 34 contenders, but while Maserati is the team to beat, the newest entry is coming from Audi.

Just as Audi has replaced its A4-based touring car in the DTM series with a new one modeled after the A5, so has its Superstars series effort switched from the RS4 to a new RS5 that will challenge for wins this season. Considering that the outgoing RS4 seized the drivers' title in 2007 and both titles in 2008, the new RS5 has big shoes to fill, and hopes to fill them with its 450 horsepower V8 and what looks like it will be a suitably aggressive body shell to maximize airflow to the engine and over the car.

Three cars will be entered in the series, including one from Audi Sport Italia driven by 2007 series champion and former grand prix driver Gianni Morbidelli, another fielded by German turner MTM and driven by Thomas Schoeffler, and a third piloted by Swedish driver Johan Kristofferson and fielded by his own team KMS. Follow the jump for the press release, and stay tuned to see how their new touring car shapes up.
Continue reading Audi preparing RS5 touring car for Italy's Superstars series

Audi preparing RS5 touring car for Italy's Superstars series originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 09:01:00 EST.
One privileged Audi fan got to experience the Chicago Auto Show in his own garage recently, according to QuattroWorld. After driving three hours to Chicago and being denied the chance to sit in the 2013 Audi RS5 at the show, Joshua Smith wrote a letter to the company complaining about the way he was treated. Lo and behold, Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen responded, explaining that the pre-production RS5 was off-limits to show-goers because it had to make it through the full auto show season, but promising to arrange a private viewing of the car at Smith's home in Neenah, WI. Audi reps showed up soon after the close of the show, not only with the RS5 but also with S6, S7, and S8 in tow.

If you're thinking of employing the same squeaky-wheel tactic to get a flotilla of Audis parked in your driveway for the day, understand that Smith wasn't just another self-important grumbler. As he indicated in his letter to de Nysschen, he does own an S5, A6 and A3, and is active in both the Chicago Audi Club and the Badger Audi Club in Wisconsin. It probably didn't hurt that in his plea for better customer service this "true Audi enthusiast" happened to mention flirting with the enemy, writing "In the BMW booth at the show I spent over 30 minutes with a BMW representative who showed me the M3 and the all new M5, which was also closed to the majority of the public."

Smith shot video of the cars at his home, which you can see after the jump.
Continue reading Audi goes extra mile to make up for customer's bad auto show experience [w/video]

Audi goes extra mile to make up for customer's bad auto show experience [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Mar 2012 17:58:00 EST.
We've admittedly had our share of issues with the approach Audi takes with its RS cars. In theory, "RS" represents the German tradition of heavy-breathing RennSport driving - essentially for cars that can really race. What we have found most often, however, is that the RS more readily approximates a branding exercise that comes sort of close to smacking us upside the head with thrills, but falls short in key ways - especially when Audi has brought us to a track, eagerly awaiting our feedback.

RS models tend to weigh a lot, and the company's Quattro obsession can harm handling while cornering - and it costs a pretty pickle or two to boot. The RS model that finally got us closest to Renn Sportiness was the TT RS (a car that's finally hitting the U.S., having already been savaging European roads since 2009). Then we waited until Spring 2010 and the RS5 that promised us things - wonderful things. The A5 upon which it is based was possessed of the near-perfect rear-biased sports coupe proportions, and the S5 it spawned was a pretty solid piece of work, too, so we were excited to drive it.

2013 Audi RS5 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Mar 2012 11:57:00 EST.
The menacing Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupe is slowly making its way into dealerships, ready to eat the souls of any driver willing to tame the 451-horsepower super coupe. It's a hardcore two-door with a naturally aspirated V8 powerplant under the hood, and in our recent stint behind the wheel, we fell head-over-heels in love.

But the C63 isn't the only hot super coupe on the block. The Audi RS5 - a model that will soon be available Stateside - offers 444 horsepower but puts that grunt to the ground via all-wheel drive. It's not as outright vicious as the Merc, but it's certainly capable of standing toe-to-toe, particularly on wet tarmac.

That in mind, the folks at Fifth Gear took these two coupes to the Cadwell Park circuit in Lincolnshire, Great Britain to see which German could pull off the quickest lap time. We won't spoil it for you, so follow the jump and watch Tiff Needell and company have a bit of high-horsepower fun.
Continue reading Fifth Gear lines up Audi RS5 vs. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe

Fifth Gear lines up Audi RS5 vs. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 15:00:00 EST.
Audi apparently has a mind to turn out a convertible version of the RS5. A slew of patent drawings depicting the high-performance drop-top have made their way to the internet via our Spanish-speaking sister site.

Judging by the drawings, we can tell that the vehicle will have room for four occupants and use the same power electric folding soft top as both the A5 and S5. The rest of the vehicle wears the same facelifted garb as the new S5 unveiled at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Under the hood, chances are buyers will see the same naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 found in the RS5 coupe. The kicking eight pot is good for 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, and will likely be mated to the company's S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox. As you may have guessed, all-wheel drive will be standard.

Thus far, Audi hasn't made mention of where the vehicle will debut or exactly which markets will get to enjoy the convertible heathen. Stay tuned.
Trademark filings suggests Audi RS5 Convertible imminent originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 15:29:00 EST.
A light nip and tuck is often all that a stylish sports car needs as it gets older. The Audi RS5 isn't even old yet, but's gone in to have some work done anyway. With a refreshed face, the RS5 has emerged on the internet ahead of its global debut at this week's 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The handsome coupe is propelled by way of a 450-horsepower, 4.2-liter V8 engine that revs to over 8,000 rpm. As before, forward momentum is metered out through the Quattro all-wheel-drive system, and helps the RS5 run from 0-62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds.

Updated for the coming model year, the Audi RS5 wears a new face that features restyled headlamps, new daytime running lamps and a revised lower fascia. (Apparently the RS5 shown above will buck conventional fog light trends and go with a singular lamp - that, or perhaps Audi is rocking some sort of special offset radar-based cruise control sensor). Either way, we're finally looking at the RS5 that will be sold in North American Audi dealerships, and we couldn't be more excited. Check it over in our gallery and then look past the jump for all of the official details.
Continue reading Facelifted 2012 Audi RS5 breaks out before Frankfurt debut

Facelifted 2012 Audi RS5 breaks out before Frankfurt debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 19:00:00 EST.
Audi Quattro Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

We've been speculating, applying the magnifying glass to spy shots and just plain wishing that the rumors were true. They are - Audi is set to debut the Quattro concept car at the Paris Motor Show in celebration of its famous all-wheel-drive system's 30th anniversary. Drawing its inspiration from the original 1980 Audi Ur-Quattro and using some underpinnings from the current RS5, the Quattro concept features a shortened wheelbase, lower roofline and a sub-3,000 pound curb weight.

The original Ur-Quattro weighed in under 3,000 pounds and featured a turbocharged five-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual. Keeping in line with that spirit, the Quattro concept ditches the V8 and dual-clutch transmission from the RS5 in favor of a turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine and six-speed manual gearbox. Power output for the Quattro concept is rated at 408 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. All that energy is put to the ground through Audi's famous quattro torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system, which in this case is setup with a 40:60 rear-biased torque split. The weight savings mixed with the power output create a vehicle with a power-weight ratio on par with that of the Audi R8 5.2 FSI.

Since this IS a modern Audi, it features stylish exterior features and a wonderful cabin space. The seats are leather-lined Sparco units that weight in at just 40 pounds apiece. The Quattro concept also makes use of the Audi MMI infotainment system. In this application, MMI includes a slew of screens useful for rally racing like classically-styled round gauges and a page for pace notes. On the outside, the Quattro concept boasts the signature Audi LED treatment, but this time it's in the form of headlamps that adjust their direction both vertically and horizontally, as well as being able to open fully or close to a slit.

This is an exciting concept that pays homage to a true motoring classic. If Audi doesn't find a way to put a version of this into production, we're sure that four-ring fanboys around the world will storm Ingolstadt.

Audi's full-bore RS5 treatment may only be available in coupe form, but that doesn't mean droptop enthusiasts can't join in on some of the fun. Senner AG, a company known for its Audi upgrades, now offers its RS design package for the A5 Cabriolet, and while it doesn't boast the outrageous power numbers of the RS5, it certainly has the look, with a couple of eccentric one-off touches, to boot.

Starting with an A5 2.0T Cabriolet, Senner has bumped engine output from 211 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque up to a more palatable 275 hp and 317 lb-ft through the use of sport air filters and ECU recalibration. An all-new exhaust system has also been fitted, as well, giving the A5 a louder, angrier sound - something even the S5 Cabriolet could benefit from.

Visually, Senner has added larger front air intakes similar to those on the RS5, though the A5's foglamps have been kept intact. Filling out the wheel wells are silver-chrome 20-inch wheels, wrapped in low-profile tires (245/30 in front, 295/25 out back), and a new rear diffuser has been added to round off the host of exterior upgrades. The interior has largely been left alone, save the addition of carbon fiber trim throughout the cabin.

Senner's kit retails for a healthy €19,900 (roughly $25k USD), and when added to the €55,000 cost of a new A5 Cabriolet, that brings the whole package to €74,900, or $95,150 USD based on current exchange rates. Scroll through the gallery below to see the handsome Senner A5 from all angles, and hit the jump for the full details in the press release.
The Cadillac CTS-V Coupe has some serious performance chops. The potent angular coupe is loaded with a blown 6.2-liter V8 capable of 556-horsepower, 15-inch front and 14.7-inch rear Brembo brakes and a Magnetic Ride Control suspension setup. Impressive stats to be sure, but does Cadillac's sleek two-seater have the goods to take on the BMW M3 coupe and Audi RS5?

Both Motor Trend and Car and Driver have obviously been pondering the same question, as the competing buff mags dusted off their camcorders and cut up a pair of comparison videos featuring the three super coupes doing a ménage à trois of the automotive kind.

Make the jump to experience both videos. In the first video, MT goes all-out with its comparison, bringing both Editor-in-Chief Angus McKenzie and the spanking new CTS-V Coupe to Germany to take on the pair of well-established Bavarian competitors. The second video shows the unique C/D approach, with no first, second or third place finishers and not a single word is uttered. C/D just let the hot coupes speak for themselves with beautiful pictures and heavenly exhaust notes.

The clever wrenches at the German tuning powerhouse MTM have gotten a hold of the Audi RS5. Always ones to turn fast faster, the group claims to have squeezed the car's top speed to 188 mph. But instead of focusing on pulling even more horsepower from the already staggering 4.2-liter V8, the company simply upped the factory speed limiter to allow for a more potent v-max. MTM will politely ask for a check for $1,429 (at current conversion rates) for the upgrade, which isn't exactly pocket change. According to MTM, the car still produces 450 horsepower, though the company will be happy to supply you with a new free-breathing exhaust system that just might turn an extra pony or two loose.

In addition to the lofty top speed, MTM has rolled out a hefty selection of wheels just for the RS5. We're guessing a new set of tires will probably be in order if you plan on bumping up against that new 188 mph top end, too. Eventually, the company plans to roll out a complete suspension for the car. And here's hoping they come up with some equally competent brakes in the process.

The on-again/off-again rumors about whether or not Americans will get to sample the hotter-than-hot Audi RS5 Coupe end now - the automaker has officially stated that the coupe will hit the States sometime in 2012. Yes, that's a bit later than what had originally been speculated, but we're still stoked that Audi has decided to include us on the RS5 goodness. No mechanical changes will be made to the coupe before it launches in the U.S., so the high-revving 450-horsepower V8 will still be intact. Awesome.

But in the meantime, we have lots of other Audi hotness hitting the streets, including the sexy R8 Spyder, which goes on sale next month. Audi has officially priced the topless R8 from $161,000 (not including the $1,250 destination charge) for six-speed manual models. If you want the six-speed R-tronic manu-matic (and you don't), be prepared to shell out an additional ... wait for it ... $9,000. Just stick with the manual - trust us on this one.
