That's one of the reasons we've brought back the Reader Ride, so we can showcase what the majority of us roll on a daily basis. Today's ride is exactly the kind of thing we're into; a rather staid means of transport that is well loved by its owner. Flickr member thefultonhow through up three shots of his '92 Infiniti G20, along with a detailed description of life with his 'G,' and after reading his story, we couldn't help but feature it.

Purchased new by his mother back in 1992, the G20 survived the rigors of daily driving at the hands his mom, and also provided of means of learning for both his brother and Mr. Fultonhow. After 169,000 miles of dutiful service, the stock mill decided to liberate a rod while his brother was behind the wheel, and after a series of attempts at selling the G20, he decided to perform a heart transplant in his grandfather's garage. The only catch: he'd never done anything like it before.

Armed with a factory shop manual, endless patience and nearly a month of his life, he replaced the spent motor with a JDM SR20DE, mated to the stock five-speed manual. After a series of fits and starts, the SR finally came to life and after 4,000 miles everything seems to be going strong.

He's kept the upgrades to a minimum in an effort to stay within the bounds of the H-stock autocross class, with plans to install an aftermarket stereo, some new wheels and some R-compound tires mounted on the stock rollers for competition.

We're love this kind of stuff, so make the jump to see a few more pics and learn how to submit your own ride to our Flickr pool.
Continue reading Reader Ride: 1992 Infiniti G20

Reader Ride: 1992 Infiniti G20 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2007 09:56:00 EST. We've amassed over 30 new members in our Flickr pool, with many accompanying their pics with a detailed explanation of where the car is from, its history and what mods have been performed -- others, not so much. There are several rides floating around the pool that are begging to be chosen (we're talking to the owners of the Audi S2, 911 Targa, and VW Corrado, specifically), but will remain unloved until we get at least one descriptive sentence.

As for the the RR format, we've decided to highlight three vehicles per week, posting one on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with a vote at the end of the month that allows you to pick your favorite from the group. We think it will work, and we've got faith that the submissions will continue to flow in.

That said, if you haven't done so already, follow the directions after the jump to throw your own ride into our Flickr pool. All we need are three photos and a brief description of the car, and you're whip is almost guaranteed its 15-minutes of fame -- or infamy.
Continue reading Reader Ride returns next week

Reader Ride returns next week originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 17:38:00 EST. Flickr pool member sncollins has a nice '88 XR4Ti he's been wheeling around for the last 20,000 miles or so. Powered by the tough-as-nails 2.3 liter turbocharged four that also saw service under the hood of SVO Mustangs and other Fox-platform cars, even a stock XR4Ti is a hoot. Of course, with the owner being an engineering student and car guy, this XR4Ti didn't stay stock for long. The nice thing about the Merkurs is their chassis was far more modern than anything else Ford was offering at the time. The aforementioned Fox-based cars were live-axle deals that would get all crossed up trying to claw out of a bumpy corner. The XR4Ti would spank BMW E30s hard, and with a Garrett T3 bolted to the side of the engine, a quick trip underhood with an open-end wrench would turn up the wick that much more. Sncollins's car is currently huffing out 23 psi from a modified turbo (the stock T3 would be in serious surge territory at 23 psi). The pressurized charge courses through a SAAB intercooler and tweaked intake manifold. The Civics are wary of this car now, due to the past smartings it's dished out. The rorty custom 3" exhaust doesn't help you fly under the radar, either.

More info, pics and a short mod list can be found after the jump, as well as instructions on how to submit your own ride for our RR of the Day.

Continue reading RR Of The Day: Merkur XR4Ti

RR Of The Day: Merkur XR4Ti originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Feb 2007 13:58:00 EST. The car you see here is one of only 180 yellow sedans imported into the U.S. that 1994, but believe us, that's not what makes it special. For us, the fact that this Swedish super sedan generates over 400 wheel horsepower is a much more significant stat than its color. The inline five-cylinder motor features mods too numerous to mention, but at the heart of it all is a Garrett GT3071R turbo pressurized to 18 psi and running on pump gas. Living in the strict state of Cali, the folks at RKAutotechnik even made sure the motor would pass emmissions, which means leaving the catalytic converter in place. In fact, the one princiiple guiding the build was that the car remain a daily driver, although from the videos included after the jump it's clear that you'll hear this daily driver coming from a mile away. In addition to the monster motor, upgrades were also made to Brembo brakes, a fully adjustable suspension, 18-inch Volvo Pegasus wheels, and some more impressive audio pieces from Kenwood and JL Audio.

You can check out the Volvo's full list of mods here, photo galleries here, and be sure to follow the jump to find videos of the car being driven, on the dyno and out having fun doing burnouts.
Continue reading RR of the Day: Volvo 854 T5R - Super Swede

RR of the Day: Volvo 854 T5R - Super Swede originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Dec 2006 18:25:00 EST. Debuting in 1960, the Corvair seemed totally out of left field from GM. It featured an air-cooled, horizontally-opposed powerplant mounted in the rear and a notorious swing-axle suspension (it was no more dangerous than its contemporaries). It was almost an entire line of vehicles, sorta like a subset of GM proper. There were trucks, vans, station wagons, sedans and coupes. Flickr member corsa180 sent in a really pretty 1965 Corvair Corsa turbo convertible. That's right, a turbo from 1965. Who says the American companies weren't/aren't innovative? A scant 64 votes separated the two after a total of 2,429 votes were cast, with as little as three votes separating the contender's rides at one point on Saturday. Both vehicles got considerable amounts of love in the 'comments' section, but in the end, people just seemed to like the Wankel-powered RX a little more.

Congratulations Mr. Blue and for those of you who haven't already, be sure to submit your own ride to our Flickr pool by following the directions after the jump.

Continue reading RR of the Week - Poll results

RR of the Week - Poll results originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Dec 2006 08:34:00 EST. Weighing in at just over 3,000 pounds, it was a quick ride for its time and proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable whip for both this writer and Flickr member longbowmkii.

There seem to be fewer and fewer of these on the road in decent shape, so we thought this particular example deserved a spot in this week's RR of the Day, 80s edition. The winner with some 600 votes under its belt (28%) is the mildly-modded 2001 Audi S4 of Julia Howard. The S4 had some pretty stiff and very interesting competition, which makes this relatively ordinary ride such a surprise victor. The very sharp 1967 Chevy Impala SS made a run at the title gathering 488 votes (22%), while the Euro-only 1984 BMW 745i Turbo also put up a fight earning 482 votes (22%). My personal fave from last week, the Holden GTO conversion, captured a respectable 367 votes (17%), and the Volkswagen Rabbit tugged on some nostalgic heart strings to the tune of 243 votes (11%). The voting was much closer than normal last week and returned the second highest number of total votes yet for a RR of the Week Poll with 2,180 ballots cast.

Total Votes: 2,180

NEXT WEEK'S THEME: Cars of the '80s!
Break out the leg warmers and your old Atari 2600, because we're going back to the '80s for our next RR of the Day theme. Certainly, the two killer photos of Alex Renner's Miata in action made for eye-candy of the highest order, but as soon as we saw the intercooler peering within the Mazda's maw, we knew this had to be Monday's submission.

Alex's '95 Miata is located in Chile and has been perpetually under the wrench since it was purchased in 2002. The aforementioned intercooler provides a steady supply of cool air to the blown 1.8-liter four, as pumped by a Mitsubishi TD04-13T turbo. Naturally, all that additional oxygen needs the appropriate amount of fuel, so Alex enlisted the aid of a Walbro 255 LPH fuel pump that sends the explosive stuff through a JimB fuel rail and feeds 330cc injectors. An Apexi SAFC2 and a Greddy PfofecB boost controller, coupled to a Vortech FPR, handle the computing duties and the whole process has been wideband tuned to create a reliable 12:1 air-to-fuel ratio. Spent air and fuel is sent through a BEGI cast exhaust manifold and out of a custom 2.5-inch turboback exhaust.

According to Alex, the Miata puts 210 HP down to the wheels at 6,500 RPM and 212 ft.-lbs. of twist at 4,500 RPM. On the handling side of things, Mr. Renner went with Tein coilovers that lower the drop-top over a set of 15x7 Rota Slipstreams, wrapped in Pirelli Pzero C tires. Behind the front rolling stock is a set of Wilwood calipers, providing pressure to 11-inch discs via four pistons. The inside gets more race duty details including a HardDog rollbar, Momo seats and steering wheel, and a video camera mount so Alex can relive his weekend excursions (we're waiting for a YouTube link Mr. Renner).

A modded Miata driven in anger is exactly the kind of vehicle (and driver) we're looking for this week, so follow along after the jump to see some of Alex's opposite lock action and get directions on how to submit your own RR of the Day.

NEXT WEEK'S THEME: Cars of the '80s!
Break out the leg warmers and your old Atari 2600, because we're going back to the '80s for our next RR of the Day theme. The twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6, coupled to the automaker's legendary Quattro system made the S4 one of the great sleepers to come out of Germany. Unfortunately, the combination of misplaced weight, a high sticker and a duo of finicky K03 turbos made it a car for only the most dedicated of quad-ring enthusiasts.

However, one enthusiast by the name of Julia Howard, has pined away for the understated Audi since high school and was finally able to buy this example in 2004. It wasn't made clear whether Julia installed her go-fast bits personally or the previous owner added them, but the combination of power and handling mods gives her ride the distinction of being today's RR of the Day.

The turbo'd six's breathing duties have been enhanced with a trifecta of APR tubing, including a bi-pipe, down-pipe and turbo-back exhaust. A MTM Stage 3 chip handles the air and fuel ratios and an RS4 clutch has been fitted for extra bite. The Tanoga short shifter and H&R coilovers are installed to ensure Julia can get every tactile sensation while behind the wheel, and the BFGoodrich T/A KDWs, mounted on the stock rims, keep grip during prolonged G's.

Overall, Ms. Howard has kept her S4 in clean condition, not drawing attention to its high powered potential, insuring less attention from the cops and more attention to bone-heads that challenge her at stop light drags.

All this week we'll feature unrelated rides that catch our eye, but we're returning with a theme next week and that theme is "Best Autocross Car". One of the more popular conversions has been transforming the Nissan 240SX back into the JDM-spec Silvia from which it sprung. Until the SEMA show last week, however, we were unaware one could do this to car other than those that came from the East. A company called JHP Vehicle Enhancements, however, had a Pontiac GTO on display that, besides the incorrect location of the steering wheel, was a dead ringer for the Holden Monaro.

We took a week off from featuring a RR of the Day to focus on SEMA, so imagine our shock when we return to find a privately owned Goat-turned-Monaro in the Autoblog Flickr Pool. Owned by Flickr member Julius C., this late model GTO suffered an unfortunate up-close encounter with a guard rail one rainy day that created the perfect opportunity to practice some Aussie-inspired rhinoplasty. The damaged front end was swapped for a Holden Monaro look-a-like from JHP and a Gravana hood with two scoops was added for good measure. Check out Julius C.'s own Flickr account for a journal of the car's transmogrification.

When the GTO arrived back in the U.S. it was harpooned for being too vanilla in the looks department. While the Holden Monaro isn't exactly the Rocky Road of vehicle design, driving a GTO that looks like one will surely turn the heads of those in the know. To everyone else, the badge re-reengineered Goat will continue to be the same 6.0-liter sleeper it's always been.

We're back with the RR of the Day feature after a week-long hiatus for SEMA. We think we did a good job with this LS6-powered Porsche 914. Taking a tiny car and stuffing a modern-day small-block V8 producing 500+ horsepower into its engine bay is a recipe for mechanical mayhem. This 914, submitted by Flickr member wotan2525 on behalf of his friend, is the result of a seven-year long project with most of the work being performed by its owner save for the paint and some engine work. Aside from the Chevy-sourced V8, many of the parts on the 914 come from other Porsches, particularly the brakes, suspension, LSD and gearing that have been lifted from a 930. Those 18-inch wheels stuffed beneath the low bodywork were donated by a type-993 911 Carrera. The owner reportedly uses it primarily for autocrossing, though it has been clocked doing the quarter mile in 11.44 seconds on street tires and could theoretically reach 200 mph if opened up. Plenty more pictures of LS6-powered 914 can be found after the jump.

We're still willing to continue our Camaro theme this week if more submissions come pouring in, but if not we have no problem dipping deeper into the pool to find something special for you. Follow the jump to find out how to submit your vehicle for our RR of the Day feature.
Continue reading RR of the Day: LS6-powered Porsche 914

RR of the Day: LS6-powered Porsche 914 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Oct 2006 13:31:00 EST. This '67 Camaro SS 396 was purchased for $800 back in 1986 and it's been a personal project of Flickr member BinCali ever since. It was wasting away in a car port that BinCali passed on his way to work every day until that fateful day twenty years ago when he struck up a conversation with the owner that lead to the title transfer. In the 20 years BinCali has owned the Camaro, he's stripped it down to "every last nut bolt," performing all the work on it himself except the paint. The 396 motor actually displaces 402ci now, while BinCali has worked to restore other items of the car, like the interior and the exhaust, to their original factory specs. As if the Camaro weren't enough to impress this crowd, the car in the background is an ultra rare right-hand drive 1971 Holden Monaro GTS, one of about five in the United States. It makes us wonder what else is in BinCali's garage.

Follow the jump for more pics and BinCali's complete list of mods.

This week we're choosing a Camaro each day for the RR of the Day feature, and we need everyone who owns a Camaro to submit his or her ride. We want to make sure all five days are filled with interesting F-bodies, and to do that we need a great group of them from which to choose. It could also be the case that Mitsubishi fans united in support the single EVO, whereas WRX faithful were split between their choices. We'll never know! Regardless, the race was extremely tight with the track tuned EVO attracting 576 votes (30%). The second place finisher in this race, the WRX Wagon, nearly caught the EVO but came up 32 votes short with a total of 544 votes (29%). My favorite, the blacked out Darth Subie, showed up to play with a respectable 360 votes (19%), while the old-school Impreza 2.5 RS was trailing the all-wheel drive Sith transport vehicle by 49 votes with 311 (16%). Last, and certainly not least (unless you go by votes), was the STi-ified bug-eyed WRX with 102 votes (5%).

This week we're going to choose a Camaro each day for the RR of the Day feature, and we need everyone who owns a Camaro to submit his or her ride. Not only does this car exist in the upper echelon of Camaro annals, it also happened to be the subject of the very first piece of automotive journalism I ever penned, so it gets extra points from me for personal nostalgia. Though Kyler has performed many mods beneath the car's skin, the sheetmetal is nearly factory stock, as is the interior. This was a fantastic generation of Camaro design and Chevy was right on to use it as inspiration for the Bow Tie's pony car revival in 2009.

As we said, Kyler's made many mods to up the power and civility of this nearly 40 year old car, including a 385 stroker motor, Flowmaster exhaust, T56 transmission, MSD ignition system, 4.10 gears, four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, and 17-inch wheels. He's been careful, however, to keep every part he's replaced tagged and stored in the garage, including the original engine. But Kyler promises he's not yet finished with his '67 Camaro RS/SS, and the car's suspension is the next on his to-do list.

Check out more pics and Kyler's complete mod list after the jump.

The theme for this week is Camaros! Everyone with a Camaro of note should submit his or her ride to our Flickr pool. From the submissions that poured in we've been forced to conclude that Autoblog has more readers who drive a Subaru than a Mitsubishi, as four out of the five cars we chose to feature were of the Subie kind. Truth be told, however, the one Lancer EVO we featured is killer and comes complete with video of the car and owner tearing up Thunderhill Raceway. But we've also got every manner of WRX gunning for a shot at this week's title. Will the EVO win out? Will Darth Subie summon the Dark Side? Will the WRX Wagon haul away the win with room to spare? Don't forget to vote and we'll find out Monday.

The theme for next week is Camaros! Everyone with a Camaro of note should submit his or her ride to our Flickr pool. We have few Camaros in the pool right now, so we need to fill it up with enough submissions to cover all of next week. Just follow the instructions after the jump to submit.
If you've got an EVO or WRX you haven't submitted yet, follow the jump to learn how. It's easy!

Today's RR of the Day is Flickr member hsubaru's 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX, what he refers to as "the ugly bugeye one." When it comes to the WRX, the uglier the better we always say. Hsubaru has added just a smidge of visual flair by adding Prodrive P7 wheels wearing slightly used STi rubber. He's also lifted the hoodscoop from the manlier STi, as well. Other STi parts include the rear sway bar, struts and springs, which means this normal looking WRX is more than meets the eye. Follow the jump for a short list of other performance mods hsubaru has added, most of which allow the WRX to gulp down more air and expel it out the rear. Also, click here for a full gallery of shots taken by hsubaru himself, which is impressive with a camera in his hands.

Remember, if you've got a Subaru WRX or Mitsubishi EVO Lancer, submit it! Simply upload photos of your ride into our Flickr group. We select one vehicle to highlight each week day, and on the weekend let you vote for the RR of the Week. Detailed instructions can be found after the jump.
Continue reading RR of the Day: the ugly bugeye '02 Subaru WRX

RR of the Day: the ugly bugeye '02 Subaru WRX originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Oct 2006 10:12:00 EST. We'll remedy that omission today by featuring the 2005 Mitsubishi EVO MR of Flickr member eat_more_chicken. He says the MR is tuned for the track but driven daily, which is just what we like to hear. The car's mods are too numerous to list here (check them out after the jump), but rest assured the owner has covered everything including the intake/exhaust, fuel system, cams, turbo system, suspension, brakes and wheels. The car reportedly now makes 301whp/287wtq on 91 octane and 320whp/310wtq on 100 octane when it's being thrashed on the track. We know it gets thrashed because eat_more_chicken left us a video to watch of the car being driven at Thunderhill Raceway near Willows, California. Check out the list of cars that count as nothing more than slow moving traffic when sharing the track with this car and its owner: various SPEC Miatas, a Lotus Elise, C5 Corvette and Viper GTS.

BTW: We'd just like to encourage everyone to submit their ride to our Flickr photo pool if you haven't done so already. We've gotten great submissions so far, but in order to keep coming at you with a ride a day, we need more. Remember, every car is eligible so submit yours and tell us why it's a great ride. Follow the jump for instructions on how to submit your ride.
Continue reading RR of the Day: Daily driven track-tuned EVO MR

RR of the Day: Daily driven track-tuned EVO MR originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Oct 2006 10:02:00 EST.
