<br />
Adding fuel to the rumormill fire, <em>Autocar </em>reports that a pure electric version of the Rolls-Royce Phantom could hit the streets within 12 months. Rolls' parent company, BMW, has been getting heavily involved in EVs and the Phantom would be an obvious choice to launch its new drivetrain considering the price premium already tacked onto the brand's offerings.<br />
<br />
Since Phantom owners tend to be driven rather than drive and rarely use their luxo-barges for long road trips (that's what the jet is for), the decision to offer an EV Phantom makes sense on many levels. Given the size and mass of the Phantom, the bulk of the batteries wouldn't affect performance or comfort, and cost... well, that's not an issue when you're dealing with $300,000+ vehicles. In spite of that, Rolls-Royce may end up only leasing the initial batch of electric Phantoms in small numbers just as BMW has done with the MINI E. <br />

<br />
Why on earth would you deliberately shoot a Rolls-Royce and try your darnedest to blow it off the road? Well, because it looks like fun, that's why. But at a third of a million dollars, you should have a better reason than an appetite for destruction and a wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket like so many rounds from an assault rifle. <br />
<br />
Fortunately, Mutec has such a reason. The German firm armors up luxury sedans and vehicles of all kinds for customers around the world. In this case, they've worked an undisclosed amount of bulletproofing and bomb-resistant armor into an extended-wheelbase Phantom, and then went to work on it with more fire power than Donald Trump commanding a marine batallion. And since we're not likely to do the same in this lifetime, we might as well enjoy the video <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/20/video-german-armor-company-blows-the-crap-out-of-a-rolls-royce/#continued">after the jump</a>, with our thanks to Patrick and Julio for sending in the tip.<br />

<div align="center"><em><strong><small>Rolls-Royce Phantom 'Hybrid' - click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />If there is any car that seems to be well suited to either hybridization or outright electrification, the Rolls-Royce Phantom would seem to be logical candidate. Many of them are used transporting the wealthy around the world's great cities like Paris, London and Manhattan in trips that are not necessarily that long. It's also not unheard for a manufacturer to provide vehicles to customers for field testing, just as BMW is doing right now with the electric Mini E. However, aside from the highly publicized Mini E project, these sorts of initiatives are typically done on the down-low. <br /><br />So when we heard that someone had spotted an extended-wheelbase Phantom prowling the streets of New York <a href="http://manonthemove.com/2009/07/14/rolls-royce-phantom-hybrid-east-65th-street-nyc/">with an extra badge on each of its fenders</a>, we were naturally a bit suspect. The car that was photographed wears hybrid badges of the same type used on all of General Motors' gas-electric vehicles. The driver claims that car was loaned to a VIP client for evaluation by Rolls-Royce. Remember, friends, that Rolls-Royce is owned by BMW - a company that has a partnership with GM, Daimler and Chrysler to develop a two-mode hybrid system. It is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that BMW might want to evaluate or even build a two-mode hybrid Phantom. However, it is almost inconceivable that any such vehicle would be clad in GM badges. <br /><br />Adding further cold water to this story is<a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/07/20/two-mode-hybrid-may-be-a-one-hit-wonder-for-daimler-bmw/"> the report earlier this week that BMW and Daimler are looking at dissolving the two-mode partnership</a> and going in a different direction with their hybrid efforts. Our guess is that the owner of this particular Roller simply had a guilty environmental conscience (or a sense of humor) but couldn't bring himself to be seen in anything as pedestrian as a Toyota Prius. We're still waiting for a comment from Rolls-Royce.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Rolls-Royce spokesman Wayne Kung confirmed our suspicions that this is not a Rolls prototype. The company does not currently have any prototypes running in the New York area.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-phantom-hybrid/low/">Rolls-Royce Phantom Hybrid?</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-phantom-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/phantom-hybrid-14_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-phantom-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/phantom-hybrid-32_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-phantom-hybrid/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/phantom-hybrid-22_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://manonthemove.com/2009/07/14/rolls-royce-phantom-hybrid-east-65th-street-nyc/">Man on the Move</a>; images used with permission]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/24/badge-engineering-at-its-finest-rolls-royce-phantom-spotted-in/">Badge-engineering at its finest? Online car configurators are one of our favorites. You can sit for an hour or more playing with different color combinations and options on a car you're never going to buy, and have absolutely nothing to show for it when you're done. The most alluring are the configurators for the most exclusive European exotica, but typically automakers don't launch these until the car's on the market, or at least has been unveiled in production form. Rolls-Royce, however, has evidently decided to jump the (nickel-plated, mother-of-pearl-handled) gun in putting online a configurator for the 200EX, the concept car that previewed the upcoming Ghost model at the Geneva show this past March.<br /> <br /> Labeled the "visualizer", the utility is available for all your distracting, time-wasting needs on the 200EX mini-site. There you can play around with different color and trim choices inside and out, right down to the "silver satin bonnet". Enjoy, but don't come complaining to us when you haven't gotten any work done.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/">Rolls-Royce 200EX concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/01-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/02-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/03-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/04-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/05-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/">Geneva 2009: Rolls-Royce 200EX concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/01-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/02-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/03-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/04-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/05-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: <a href="http://www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com/200EX/main.html">Rolls-Royce</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/25/rolls-royce-launches-configurator-for-200ex-ghost/">Rolls-Royce launches configurator for 200EX/Ghost</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 08:27:00 EST. <br />Historically, Rolls-Royce has somewhat smugly declined to quote horsepower numbers, utilizing amusingly evasive language like "entirely sufficient" to describe its engines' power outputs. Perhaps a sign of the times, Rolls is now being a bit more forthcoming about details for its upcoming "baby" RR4 model, including approximate horsepower numbers.<br /><br />The company has disclosed that the RR4 will be powered by a new, 6.6-liter turbocharged V12 engine that gives "upwards of 500bhp." Further, it will route that prodigious output through a ZF transmission with no less than eight forward ratios. Despite its ability to generate big power figures, Rolls says that one important drivetrain figure will be smaller than any other Rolls on the market: C02 output.<br /><br />The news came from CEO Tom Purves himself at a New York press event for the 200EX, where the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-proves-that-downsizing-is-relativ/">Geneva concept car</a> is making its first stop on a world tour designed to get prospective clients in the car and booking orders for the production RR4 version. <br /><br />The BMW-owned British automaker has long been famous for its peerless interiors and isolated ride, but Purves promises that the RR4 will bring with it a new emphasis on driving entertainment: "... we have consciously engineered this car to be more involving and dynamic for those owners around the world that will wish to drive it themselves."<br /><br />While we don't expect Porsche Cayman-baiting dynamics, we look forward to seeing what the company views as more involved driving dynamics when the car starts rolling out the front doors of its Goodwood production facility. Official press release after the jump.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/">Geneva 2009: Rolls-Royce 200EX concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/01-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/02-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/03-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/04-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/05-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Rolls-Royce]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/23/confirmed-rolls-royce-rr4-getting-500-hp-turbo-v12-8-speed-gea/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CONFIRMED: Rolls-Royce RR4 getting 500+HP turbo V12, 8-speed gearbox</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/23/confirmed-rolls-royce-rr4-getting-500-hp-turbo-v12-8-speed-gea/">CONFIRMED: Rolls-Royce RR4 getting 500+HP turbo V12, 8-speed gearbox</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 13:30:00 EST. <br />In this economic climate, nobody is immune. But everything is relative. Rolls-Royce may continue to set sales records, but even they're downsizing... sorta. Rolls' answer to a shrinking economy is a smaller model, but at 212.6 inches long, it's the 200EX is still bigger than most luxury sedans roaming the roads. And it still looks every bit as deserving of the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament adorning its streamlined, brushed aluminum nose as the larger Phantom range. When the 200EX enters production, it'll lose the traditional Rolls showcar nameplate in favor of something like Silver Cloud, and it'll still command a prime spot in the valet lot at the yacht club, but don't take our word for it: check out the live shots for yourself in the gallery below, and the factory images below that, and the full details in the press release after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/">Geneva 2009: Rolls-Royce 200EX concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/01-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/02-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/03-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/04-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/05-rolls-royce-200ex-live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/">Rolls-Royce 200EX concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/01-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/02-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/03-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/04-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-200ex-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/05-rolls-royce-200ex-official_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /> <em><strong><small>Photos Copyright (C)2009 Noah Joseph / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-proves-that-downsizing-is-relativ/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Geneva 2009: Rolls-Royce 200EX proves that downsizing is relative</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-rolls-royce-200ex-proves-that-downsizing-is-relativ/">Geneva 2009: Rolls-Royce 200EX proves that downsizing is relative</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 04:45:00 EST. The 200EX will be a new, smaller model to slot in below the current Phantom sedan and coupe, riding on a new platform and with an all-new engine. The underpinnings are believed to be derived from the just launched <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/19/la-2008-2009-bmw-7-series-and-concept-7-series-activehybrid-unv/">7 Series</a> and may be powered by a newly designed V12 engine. If 12 cylinders are employed, the engine will not be a variant of the motor used in the Phantom, but an all-new design.<br /><br />Judging from the teaser, Rolls-Royce is sticking with the lower wider grille look that debuted on the 100EX and then the Phantom coupes and lighting is likely to come from a full LED array rather than the usual xenons. Steel is believed to replace much of the aluminum used in the Phantom for improved durability and a power closing "coach" doors will carry over from the Phantom. We should be seeing more complete photographs and other details of the 200EX in the coming days.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.worldcarfans.com/9090218.040/rolls-royce-200ex-concept-aka-rr4-image-surfaces-before-geneva-debut">World Car Fans</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/19/geneva-preview-rolls-royce-200ex-concept-teaser-surfaces/">Geneva Preview: Rolls-Royce 200EX Concept teaser surfaces</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 10:25:00 EST. The RR4 won't be coming to market for another two years, but its design is complete and vehicle development and testing is well underway. The marque's Goodwood factory is undergoing renovations that will allow its production lines to accommodate the full Phantom range as well as the new RR4. <br /><br />Based on the sketches, it looks like the RR4 will be retaining the same long-hood, high-beltline proportions as the Phantom series cars. Although rumors have had the RR4 being built on a derivative of the new 7-series platform, Rolls isn't saying anything about that right now. The car will apparently have a unique new engine not shared with any other models. You can read Rolls-Royce's official press release is after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-rr4-sketches/low/">Rolls-Royce RR4 sketches</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-rr4-sketches/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/p0045982-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-rr4-sketches/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/p0045981-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-rr4-sketches/826152/">Rolls-Royce</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/27/rolls-royce-releases-official-sketches-of-new-rr4/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rolls-Royce releases official sketches of new RR4</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/27/rolls-royce-releases-official-sketches-of-new-rr4/">Rolls-Royce releases official sketches of new RR4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 27 May 2008 09:54:00 EST. Its model line-up, recently expanded to include the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/30/officially-official-2008-rolls-royce-phantom-drophead-coupe/">Drophead Coupe</a>, consists solely of two derivatives of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/01/in-the-autoblog-garage-2007-rolls-royce-phantom/">Phantom</a>. For the first time in the company's history, production in 2007 capped the 1,000 mark. So when Rolls-Royce confirms a new model, it's a big deal.
<p>Earlier this week at the Detroit show, Rolls-Royce chief Ian Robertson confirmed that the anticipated "baby Rolls", which we saw in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/15/spy-shots-baby-rolls-nabbed/">spy shots</a> as recently as yesterday, is slated for unveiling in 2010. Code-named RR4, Robertson also announced that the car would receive a brand new engine, presumably because the Phantom's 450-hp V12 doesn't fit. The car is expected to be based on the BMW 7-Series, which explains why the mule seen in yesterday's spy shots was accompanied by BMW's big sedan, slotting in between the Bavarian sedan and the Phantom limo.</p>
<p>While he was at it, Robertson also confirmed that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/12/spy-shots-rolls-royce-fixed-head-coupe/">fixed-roof Phantom coupe</a> previewed by the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/03/02/geneva-motor-show-rolls-royce-pulls-the-tarp-off-the-101-ex-con/">101EX concept</a> would begin delivery by this coming summer.</p>

An upright test mule has been spotted running around at BMW's facility in the frozen hinterlands. There have been rumors of a smaller Roller swirling about, and these shots seem to support the conjecture. BMW's 7-series will reportedly serve as the basis for the new luxury whip, and the car in the photos appears identical to the surrounding 7's from the A-pillar back. The stiff upper lip has likely been grafted on to facilitate cooling and airflow for the engine room. Plus, you could do worse than an E65 with a better schnoz and an old-world interior. Check out all five spy shots in the gallery below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/baby-rolls-royce-spy-shots/low/">Rolls Royce RR4 - spy shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/baby-rolls-royce-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/00_babyrollsroycea_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/baby-rolls-royce-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/01_babyrollsroycea_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/baby-rolls-royce-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/02_babyrollsroycea_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/baby-rolls-royce-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/03_babyrollsroycea_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/baby-rolls-royce-spy-shots/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/04_babyrollsroycea_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/15/spy-shots-baby-rolls-nabbed/">Spy Shots: Baby Rolls nabbed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 17:47:00 EST. <p>The Range Rover has long held the high ground in the luxury off-road segment, holding its own quite honorably against the constant onslaught of latecoming rivals from mainstream luxury carmakers.</p>
<p>It might have a more difficult time of it, though, if the other Double-R of British luxury automobiles were to join the fight. This jacked-up Silver Shadow shouldn't leave Land Rover's range-topper with much to worry about, though.</p>

That's what Rolls Royce would have you believe, but EVO is certain this is the Spirit of Ecstasy's upcoming hard-top two-door, previewed by the 101EX concept and recently <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/28/rolls-royce-officially-announces-phantom-coupe/">confirmed for production</a>. These shots follow similar ones from last month, indicating that BMW's best engineers are hard at work.<br /><br />What's the big difference, you ask? Word on the street is that, while the DHC is built for leisurely cruising from the yacht club to the golf course, the new model will be more driver-focused. A driver's Rolls? Interesting...We'll just have to sit tight until March when the new mega-coupe is scheduled to debut at the Geneva show, two years after the concept's unveiling at the same event, to find out more. In the meantime, follow the link to check out the shots in depth. <br /><br />[Source: EVO via <a href="http://automobilesdeluxe.blogspot.com/2007/10/aaa-rolls-royce-tests-next-coup.html">Automobiles De Luxe</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/12/spy-shots-rolls-royce-fixed-head-coupe/">Spy Shots: Rolls Royce fixed-head coupe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 12 Oct 2007 11:33:00 EST. <p>BMW is expected to release its new corporate strategy later this year, and when it does, it might include expanding to swallow up some more brands. What those brands might be has not been revealed, although reports indicate that the Bavarian automaker could be looking to take over Volvo cars from Ford's rapidly disintegrating Premium Auto Group, which has also <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/12/its-done-aston-martin-sold-for-925-million/">recently shed Aston Martin</a> and may be <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/jaguar">prepared to offload Jaguar and Land Rover</a>, as well.</p>
<p>Munich has had varied success with expanding its family tree. It's had seven years to recuperate from the Rover Group fiasco, and would evidently be hoping for more success along the lines of its MINI and Rolls Royce ventures. </p>

This Silver Shad-amino (Shadero?) has just undergone a two-year restoration by Florida's Foreman Motors. It'd be just the thing out on the Estate, cruising the grounds surrounded by sumptuous leather and wool with the Spirit of Ecstasy up on the prow. We think it's great; it's not like these particular Rollers are rare cars, anyway. The duPont Registry, want ads for those with excess filthy lucre, has it listed at $49,000, or a dollar per accrued mile. It could be worse, at least the Silver Shadow has handsome, stately lines and the conversion appears to be high-quality. Imagine what a <a href="http://www.channel4.com/4car/gl/gallery/gallery/574/4">Camargue's</a> blockier profile would do without its fast C-pillar. Although, that rakish rear window may make a nice Cam-a-Lanche. <p>Think a Rolls-Royce Phantom is expensive? Well, yeah...it is. One of the most expensive on the market, as a matter of fact. (Hey, it's a Rolls-Royce. What did you expect?) But if you think the Phantom is expensive on the American market, you should take a look at what it costs elsewhere in the world.</p>
<p>Our new friends over at Automobiles De Luxe have compiled what they're calling "the Phantom Index", taking the example of "the Big Mac Index" from The Economist and carrying the formula through to the most bling-tastic of motor saloons.</p>
<p>You might be surprised that the Phantom is cheapest to buy in the United States, undercutting the equivalent price of the same automobile in the United Kingdom and in the European Union by over a hundred thousand dollars. Not that such concerns would factor into the equation for most buyers of a new Rolls-Royce, mind you... perish the thought.</p>

<p class="pull_quote">When supersonic wasn't enough, we got "hypersonic." When luxury wasn't enough, we got "ultra-luxury." If we aren't there yet, we will soon come to a time when "bling" is not enough. The first candidate for what we will call "superbling" is STRUT's line of automotive jewelry.</p>
<p class="pull_quote">With offerings aimed at the Unique Whip and 300C-to-Bentley set, STRUT creates a high-end line of accessories. Triple-chromed stainless steel, crimped mesh, polished surrounds, engraved shields, and the requisite enormous wheels mix and mingle with the most expensive car bodies in the world. Its new Knightsbridge Collection has been created for the Phantom, with a delicate, polished link grill, chrome-tipped exhaust, side vents, and STRUT badges everywhere. What will it cost you to strut like that? Twenty-five thousand British pounds sterling. They don't call it strutting for nothing. If you'd like to shuffle for a bit longer instead, we will understand.</p>

<p>In most countries around the world, if you've got the cash and the chutzpah to be rolling in a Roller, you're an instant target for theft, carjacking, kidnapping and various forms of armed extortion. No wonder, then, that Rolls-Royce is finally launching a fully armored version of the Phantom luxury limousine. </p>
<p>The beefed-up Phantom starts its life as any other does at the factory in Goodwood, but is then sent to an undisclosed independent contractor for fortification. There, specialists install sheets of the latest fiber composites, steel plating, bullet-proof glass and an additional polycarbonate laminate inside the cabin. All the extra protection gives the armored Rolls-Royce the highest VR7 security rating. To cope with the extra weight, the suspension and chassis have been beefed up, but the 453-hp V12 engine carries over unchanged to pull the extra mass.</p>
<p>From the outside the armored Phantom is indistinguishable from its unprotected counterpart. Inside, Rolls-Royce redesigned parts of the cabin to maintain the same standard of comfort and luxury despite the thicker door panels, and customers can still customize their rides to the same degree as any other. The "Phantom Armoured" is going on sale first in Europe and the Middle East, but we doubt it'll be long before Rolls-Royce would respond if American buyers demanded the armored VIP carrier.<br /><br />[Source: Rolls-Royce]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-phantom-armoured/low/">Rolls-Royce Phantom Armoured</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-phantom-armoured/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/rr-armored1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rolls-royce-phantom-armoured/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/rr-armored2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/05/rolls-royce-steel-plates-the-phantom/">Rolls-Royce steel-plates the Phantom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 05 Apr 2007 16:16:00 EST. While a Viper may be used to promote the brand, Dodge isn't trying to sell one to the same customer considering a Caliber, for instance. A handful, meanwhile, only market to the &uuml;ber-rich. Brands like Ferrari and Bentley may come to mind, but compared to the cr&egrave;me-de-la-cr&egrave;me marques like Bugatti and Rolls Royce, they're a dime a dozen. </p>
<p>Rolls Royce, as was recently revealed in the <em>Los Angeles Times</em>, only targets potential customers who have liquid assets in excess of $30 million. That segment wouldn't be considered a mass market, and so the way Rolls Royce sells a car is markedly different from how, say, Dodge would.</p>

<p>Is that a Grey Goose flying into a Silver Cloud? Not far off, actually. In a bit of brand synergy we can really get behind, Grey Goose, the veritable Rolls Royce of vodkas, has teamed up with Rolls Royce itself on a joint marketing and public awareness campaign.</p>
<p>The promotion centers around two specially-made Grey Goose edition Extended Wheelbase Phantoms. The limos got a specially-mixed French racing blue finish outside and unique upholstery inside. Naturally, the flying Grey Goose icon is embroidered and discretely emblazoned on different parts of the car.</p>
<p>The two special Phantoms will be used to generate publicity, raise money for charity and for a public awareness campaign that will bring them to different cities promoting responsible drinking and, of course, Grey Goose. At the end of their run, so to speak, both Phantoms will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to charitable causes.</p>

Gatti in London on April 24th. From there the 1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, Chassis No. 1574 was sold several times, including to Millard Newman in Florida, who had it meticulously restored and added to his collection. After Newman's death, the car's new owner put it through another extensive restoration, won several Concours awards, then brought it to Arizona where it was auctioned for $725,000, Friday. It was by far the best-preserved and most beautiful of three super rare Silver Ghosts auctioned at RM.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Make the jump to check out the two other Rollers that left the auction block.</span><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2007-rm-auction-scottsdale-3-rolls-royce-40-50hp-silver-ghosts/low/">2007 RM Auction, Scottsdale: 3 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghosts</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2007-rm-auction-scottsdale-3-rolls-royce-40-50hp-silver-ghosts/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/lot264_rr_silver_ghost_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2007-rm-auction-scottsdale-3-rolls-royce-40-50hp-silver-ghosts/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/lot264_rr_silver_ghost_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2007-rm-auction-scottsdale-3-rolls-royce-40-50hp-silver-ghosts/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/lot264_rr_silver_ghost_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2007-rm-auction-scottsdale-3-rolls-royce-40-50hp-silver-ghosts/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/lot264_rr_silver_ghost_6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2007-rm-auction-scottsdale-3-rolls-royce-40-50hp-silver-ghosts/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/lot264_rr_silver_ghost_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/20/2007-rm-auction-scottsdale-3-rolls-royce-40-50hp-silver-ghosts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>2007 RM Auction, Scottsdale: 3 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghosts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/20/2007-rm-auction-scottsdale-3-rolls-royce-40-50hp-silver-ghosts/">2007 RM Auction, Scottsdale: 3 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghosts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 20 Jan 2007 12:24:00 EST.
