It took 24 hours to run the race, but it was the last one was stuffed with the high action as four cars were still trying to figure out how to gain victory on the track and in the pits. Along with the obligatory crashes, spins, mechanical issues and retirements had come numerous penalties, a double-digit number of full-course yellows and two hours of fog that turned early Sunday morning into a stretch of parade laps.

The final hour would make up for the morning - drivers who might have been happy just to get on the podium had a shot at victory as the end of the race approached, and that turned into a few gambles that paid off, and at least one that didn't...

The Rolex 24 at Daytona is still running, and we spent yesterday and a healthy portion of the evening absorbing the agitato thunder of the Daytona Prototypes, the mezzo-soprano howl of the GT cars, the RVs, the bonfires, the numerous full-course yellows, the back-course braking into the Bus Stop and, of course, the ferris wheel.

We'll be back with a race recap after the victors are decided, so for now enjoy some photos of what we've seen so far.

There has never been a four-door diesel sedan in the Grand-Am series, until now: The blunt, bewinged grille of the Mazda6 GX has blown right through that wall. It's said that racing improves the breed, but usually the breed has gone on sale when the racing begins. One of the unusual aspects of the Mazda6 GX, on the other hand, is that while the diesel won't go on sale to the public until later this year, it will already have tasted racing blood by the end of the day. That kind of reversal is more likely found with super coupes like the Lexus LFA and Honda NSX.

Mazda has taken class wins at Daytona's 24-hour race a whopping 23 times since 1975, most recently in 2010 with the RX-8 in the GT class. This year the Hiroshima company decided to show off its SkyActiv technology, then turned things up to eleven by opting for its SkyActiv-D instead of the more conventional SkyActiv-G gas engine to run in the new GX class. It will be joined by competitors like the Lotus Evora and Porsche Cayman in the class, nevertheless, at 2.4 liters, it's the smallest engine on the grid.

Time has not been a friend, either - Mazda said that the first five SkyActiv-D engines off the production line went to Speed Source in Coral Springs, Florida, the company that preps Mazda's race vehicles. Still, race driver Jonathan Baumarito on the #70 car said that although the engine's been on the dyno since February of last year, it's only been in the car for about a month and there have been only a couple of test days.

Speed Source owner, team driver and multiple 24-hour winner Sylvain Tremblay - he drove in the teams that won in 2008 and 2010 in the RX-8 - said the big challenge right now is getting the gearing right. Both Tremblay and Baumarito said that the diesel's torque is a plus through the Bus Stop section at the back of the course, entered after coming off the high-speed banked turn. But Tremblay said that the first infield section of horseshoes is more trying because the SkyActiv-D needs to be on boost to get its power on, and that doesn't happen until after 3,500; maintaining that through slow-speed turns and having enough to get the job done through the high-speed ovals is the test.

There are three Mazda6 GXs competing, Everyone is cautiously optimistic about how things might go during the race, but in fairness this has to be looked at as a 24-hour testing session. We came to Daytona Beach, Florida where you can drive on the beach, gun shops outnumber doughnut shops and you can putt-putt and fish for alligators at the same place. But we're not here for any of that - we've made the trip with Audi in order to experience the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the first race in the 2013 Grand-Am season and the only 24-hour race in America.

Three teams are racing four Audi R8 Grand-Am cars - WeatherTech Racing, Rum Bum Racing and APR, which is running two cars. Shown to the world two years ago, the R8 Grand-Am is part of Audi Sport's R8 LMS customer racing program that was commenced in 2008, and ever since 2009 has been nabbing success all over the world: In four years it has taken 154 victories and 17 series titles. That is with less than 100 cars sold to customers throughout the world, and the trophies - either class wins or overall victories - have been gathered from all of the major endurance races except one: Daytona.

Mazda6 Skyactiv-D Racecar - live at Detroit Auto Show reveal

It may not be quite as radical as some of the company's past rotary racers, but the new Mazda6 Skyactiv-D racecar does have a notable powertrain underhood: the automaker's brand-new clean diesel four-cylinder engine.

Three of these new diesel-powered Mazda6 racers will take to the track in the Grand-Am GX class of the upcoming 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 26, with five drivers on each team. The car you see above, number 70, is sponsored by Mazda's longtime motorsports partner, SpeedSource.

Other than the announcement back in September that the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and the American Le Mans Series were merging, there have been precious few details as to how the newly combined series would shake out. Today, both entities helped clear things up a bit by announcing some of the new classification changes that will go into effect for the 2014 Rolex 24, changes that are confirmed through the 2015 season.

The names for the new classes (or the new series as a whole) have yet to be released, but the breakdown goes like this:
  • The ALMS P1 prototype class (pictured above) has been eliminated
  • Grand-Am Daytona Prototype and ALMS P2 classes will be merged
  • Nissan Deltawing will compete in this merged class
  • ALMS Prototype Challenge will remain a separate class
  • Grand-Am and ALMS GT classes will continue to run separate cars and classes
  • The future of the Grand-Am's new GX class sounds unsure after this year, with it either becoming part of the ALMS GT class or becoming its own separate class
Right off the bat, this suggests we will no longer see LMP1 cars like the Audi R18 TDI or Lola racecars in the US, though we still don't know what sort of rule changes there will be for the Prototype and GT classes (and we wouldn't be surprised to see these competitors end up in a different class). Despite losing the LMP1 cars (which currently runs hybrid and diesel racecars), both organizations look to include more "green technologies." We already know the new ALMS GX class will feature 2014 Mazda6 with a Skyactiv-D diesel engine under the hood.

Brumos Racing at the Daytona 24

At this year's Rolex 24 at Daytona, Brumos Racing driver Leh Keen wore a camera strapped to his chest. But he didn't just wear it for the race, he wore it for the entire event, from the plane ride in to the post-race press conference.

Brumos Racing won last year's GT championship and it started off this year by taking third in the #59 Brumos Porsche 911 GT3 at Daytona. One of Keen's co-drivers was Hurley Haywood, who helped win the same race for the same team in 1973 and 1975. Short of smelling the petrol and wiping the champagne off your face, the ensuing video, produced by Porsche, is a terrific example of what it's like being in the driver's seat for a 24-hour endurance race. Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona at sunset

You'll want to skip the next post if you haven't unwrapped the weekend's Rolex 24 at Daytona awaiting you on your (apparently very capacious) DVR. For the rest of you, the 50th running of the event that commences Speedweeks and the sports car racing season saw David trounce several Goliaths: the Ford/Riley of Michael Shank Racing entry piloted by A.J. John Pew, Oswaldo Negri Jr., A.J. Allmendinger and Justin Wilson crossed the line in first. Not only that, their sister MSR car finished in third a minute down.

A.J. Allmendinger was behind the wheel at the checkered flag, his leg cramps so severe that he had to be helped from the car. MSR has been at the Daytona 24 for nine years and this is the team's first victory, while it was Allmendinger's first win in any series (he also competes in NASCAR with Penske Racing) - in six years.

They beat a bunch of drivers you're more likely to have heard of, with names like McNish, Montoya, Rahal, Franchitti and Tracy. The top five positions were filled out by the Starworks Motorsport Ford/Riley with Ryan Dalziel crossing the line in second, Juan Pablo Montoya driving the Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley across the line in fourth, and the Action Express Racing Chevrolet Corvette - the first year for the Corvette in Prototype Class - in fifth. AJ FoytLegendary driver A.J. Foyt has been hospitalized after suffering complications from knee surgery. The 77-year-old Foyt had the surgery two weeks ago and was slated to serve as the grand marshal for the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Jackie Stewart stepped in to handle those duties in Foyt's place this weekend.

According to a spokeswoman, the driver had been up and walking around after the surgery, but had developed an infection this week. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Foyt expressed his remorse for missing the Rolex, saying, "I feel so bad that I let everyone down."

Meanwhile, Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III said that the track and everyone involved with the race wishes Foyt a quick recovery.

Foyt is a towering figure in racing circles. He remains the only driver in history to win the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We wish him a speedy recovery. Click past the break for a quick statement regarding his hospitalization.

Another year, another Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona champion. Something interesting happened before the prototypes took to the track, though, when a Ford Escape Hybrid took on the 1.5-mile road course. The driver, Mark Anthony Riccobono, didn't break any speed records... but he did successfully maneuver the Escape without the help of a very crucial driving aid - vision.

Riccobono is blind, and with the help of non-visual technology, he completed the Daytona road course. Beyond simply making lefts and rights, Riccobono also had to avoid a variety of obstacles. Some were stationary while others were thrown randomly from the back of a van. Riccobono avoided them all, and then he passed the van before crossing the finish line.

The event marks the first time a blind person has driven a vehicle around a course without the aid of a sighted person. It was a major milestone for the Blind Driver Challenge, which aims to improve blind-interface technology. Check out the press release after the break.

This past weekend the 2010 North American motorsports season kicked off with the 48th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The race started under caution after a two hours of torrential rain before the green flag, but the field of prototypes and GTs weathered the storm to make their way around the 3.56-mile, 12-turn course.

Although the rain eventually let up, track conditions remained treacherous and unpredictable for most of the night. The race featured a record 53 lead changes by 29 drivers, and all but two prototypes led at some time. Even after 24 hours the competition remained close, and the eventual winner took the checkered flag by just over 52 seconds. January 2010 not only kicks off a new year, but also signals the end of the Naughties. The automotive landscape has changed quite a bit since the days of the Y2K scare, but some things remain the same. January still hosts the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) at Cobo Hall in Detroit, the racing season roars to life with the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Barrett-Jackson and the rest of the auction houses will still be propping up their tents in Arizona, and the RetroMobile classic car show and auction will return to the banks of the Seine in Paris.

Classic and collectible car fans will also be treated to the Cavallino Classic, La Jolla Motor Classic, Grand National Roadster Show, and Kruse South Florida Collector Car Auction. Meanwhile, consumers get a chance to kick tires and take notes on the 2010 models at the San Diego Auto Show, Washington Auto Show and Portland International Auto Show domestically, and internationally at the European Motor Show Brussels and Auto Expo India. Besides Daytona, race fans can look forward to events as diverse as the IRC's 78th Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo and the World Drag Expo swapmeet in Schaumburg, Illinois.

It's no surprise when a drag race comes down to tenths of seconds. Endurance races, however, are more often than not decided by laps rather than seconds, with even slightly better lap times creating large gaps over a long period of time. Not so in the 47th running of the 24 Hours at Daytona. Not only did the first place car have the closest margin of victory, .167 seconds, but third place was a mere 5.504 seconds back and fourth place just 10.589 seconds behind. This year's race set records for the most finishers on the lead lap and had an incredible 53 lead changes among 22 drivers and nine cars. Sound like fun?
