Yamaha is having fun with the introduction of the 2013 TMAX, asking various motorcycle personalities tune its innovative new scooter, which has its engine mounted in the frame, motorcycle style, as opposed to the swingarm.

Roland Sands, an ex-AMA racer and champion, went with inspiration from his racing days, whereas French motorcycle maven Ludovic Lazareth went with a stealth chopper theme. You can watch Sands' take on the TMAX in the video below.
Continue reading Roland Sands builds stretched Yamaha scooter

Roland Sands builds stretched Yamaha scooter originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 17 Nov 2012 14:02:00 EST.
We won't be strolling the aisles of this year's EICMA show in Milan, and that's nothing short of a crying shame. There's going to be a wide selection of fantastic machines on display, including a very interesting project built on the bones of the Yamaha Vmax. Yamaha Europe has released a teaser for the custom bike, and as it turns out, the project has called upon some of the most renowned builders in the world. Roland Sands, Marcus Walz and Ludovic Lazareth have all thrown in a bit of expertise on the project, and the result should be nothing short of stunning.

The crew calls the project the Vmax Hyper Modified, but details are scarce beyond that. We don't even know if each of the guys on the crew is responsible for an individual bike of their own or whether they've pooled their talents for a final concept. Either way, we can't wait to see the final product. Hit the jump to take a look at the teaser video.
Continue reading Yamaha calls on big-name talent for Vmax Hyper Modified project

Yamaha calls on big-name talent for Vmax Hyper Modified project originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 18:59:00 EST.
By almost all accounts, we've got a pretty sweet gig here. We drive new cars, write up a few words, snap a few pictures and share the whole shindig with you in what is truly one of the finest slices of fried employment around. But that doesn't mean we don't get jealous of other occupations or the gents that work them. Take Roland Sands, for example. The man designs and builds some of the most beautiful custom bikes, helmets and cars around, and recently, he partnered up with Jamie Robinson for a full photo shoot.

How'd it go? Let's just say that while we've had some pretty good days at the office, none of them have ever compared to the day Sands had while strutting some of his hardware. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself, though do be warned; some of the scenes may not be safe for cubical-viewing.
Continue reading A day in the office with Roland Sands is better than yours

A day in the office with Roland Sands is better than yours originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 May 2011 14:57:00 EST.
Roland Sands, champion motorcycle racer and founder of Roland Sands Design, is turning his wrenches and sketchpad loose on the Ducati Desmosedici RR - the very rare and expensive street version of the MotoGP racer.

At $72,500 apiece, Ducati's entire North American run of 500 bikes sold out in five hours. One of Sands' customers has three in his collection, and one of those is getting a flat-track makeover.

The bike in question has zero miles on it, so performing this transformation is an act of sacrilege in the eyes of the Ducati faithful. The tear-down and fabrication process on the Desmo is only just underway. The final product will be either an amazing machine gone nuclear-hot or a trashed masterpiece. We can't wait to see how things turn out.

It looks like even Hollywood Superstars are not immune to the lure of well-crafted American Iron. The paparazzi recently caught Brad Pitt out for a cruise aboard the one-off steed pictured above. Mr Pitt is no stranger to the health benefits of a good right-wrist exercise regiment - he's been spotted cruising the left coast on several different cycles, including a full range of Ducatis as well as customs from Confederate.

So what exactly is Brad's latest mount? If you notice the matching 21-inch Roland Sands Design wheels front and rear, this setup has become a trademark of designer Jesse Rooke. The California-based custom builder has been churning out some truly unique creations since his debut in 2002, as well as lending his designs to other manufactures like Swift Motorcycles.

One look at a Rooke Ride and it becomes apparent that his inspirations come from far beyond the traditional boundaries of an ever-struggling custom scene. This goes to show that cool is cool, no matter what package it's served in. Now, if we could just get a leg over one of "the other Jesse's" bikes in the near future... We hear they really do carve. Imagine that, a custom that corners. Who says choppers are dead?

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads. Only parking lots... plus a few small jumps and a high-banked turn. Oh, and we'll also need a bit of gravity, which is all that's powering Roland Sands Design's soap box derby racer. Built in the shape of a certain famous DeLorean time machine, Sands' version eschews Mr. Fusion in favor of a giant can of Red Bull, which just so happens to be the title sponsor of the event the car was competing in.

From the looks of things, this DeLorean-shaped racer performed just about flawlessly with ex-motorcycle racer Sands at the helm. See for yourself in the video after the break. If you're interested, part one can be found here. Oh, and just wait to see what happens when this baby hits 88 miles per hour!

Amateur motorcycle racers are about to get a low-cost and highly competitive new class to consider using race-spec motorcycles built from 450cc motocross bikes. In past years, the 250cc 2-stroke was the most desirable and fastest off-road bike to have, but recently the class has been overtaken by 450cc 4-stroke machines, which are reliable, lightweight and extremely fast. It turns out that they also make an excellent foundation for a road-racer, and Roland Sands, past AMA 250GP champion himself, is ready to begin selling 450 Super Single bikes to kick-off the new racing class specifically designed for these $15,000 bikes. Sands' bike is based on Yamaha's WR450F, but kits are expected to be available for the Honda CRF450X and Kawasaki KX450F. What's more, manufacturers such as KTM, Suzuki, Husqvarna, Husaberg and even ATK also offer similar machines that could likely also be used for this racing class. This is truly exciting, and if the racing class proves successful, a slew of street-legal bikes could be introduced using the same set of components. Win on Sunday, ride to work on Monday... has a nice ring to it, wouldn't you say?

Roland Sands is no stranger to fast bikes, nor is it outside his normal realm to modify a V-Twin-based machine. Usually, though, those V-Twins are from Harley Davidson. Sands goes a bit outside the box with his latest custom creation, the Ultramotard, based upon a stock Ducati Hypermotard platform. We have no details on what exactly Sands has done to this beast, but a look at the photos definitely shows that not much went untouched. The Ducati "L-Twin" engine has certainly been modified, as you can see - but what changes, if any, were made inside the cases are as yet unknown. The snazzy paint job looks great, as do the custom dual exhaust pipes exiting off to the side. Performance Machine parts were used liberally, and those wheels are likely PM items that you'll be able to buy. Expect to see much more of this bike as it begins making the show circuit shortly.
